Well the ES version should be fine right? Seems cheap enough on ebay for around $60-$80.

I'VE GOT IT!! With all this talk of problems with the fresh install, the answer should be simple. Someone make a video of themselves doing a fresh install on a Envy 14. This will be the guide and will definitely make it to page 1. But who will step up??

Our temps aren't to high. 40-50 idle temps are good. Plus idle temps dont even matter, its temps under load that do, and mine stay in the low 70's while gaming. thats pretty damn good.

Dunno engineer samples should work fine if they are 'late samples' with most of the production issues fixed. But according to wikipedia most engineer samples are even finer than the finished product since they have been more extensively stress tested. Rarely however engineer samples may have flaws that are corrected in the final version.

Now... does saving 1/4 of TPD worth losing 1/4 of power ? dunno

    http://cgi.ebay.com/USED-INTEL-CORE...em&pt=CPUs&hash=item4aa2fea813#ht_3527wt_1137

Someone reported 640LM is booting (quid of working flawlessly ?)

11 hours left for tha cheap 640LM who's wanting to try it ? lol http://cgi.ebay.com/USED-INTEL-CORE...em&pt=CPUs&hash=item4aa2fea813#ht_3527wt_1137

    I'd rather go for a 620m ES http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Core-i7-6...em&pt=CPUs&hash=item19bd93349b#ht_4287wt_1137
At least this ebay seller teaches us that "BGA processor pins" in PGA sockets are less stable and may damage the laptop, I think that's the reason BGA sockets are soldered so that the pins never screw up ?

Is the US version of the E14 a beats model?

Im thinking about buying one in the states and swap the keyboard to my localization but when I check the E14 maintenance and service guide it lists two types of keyboards, one for beats models and the other for standard models. Any idea what the US model is?

Well, the TDP on the i5-450M and i5-520M is 35W, while the i7-620LM and i7-640LM have a TDP of 25W. A 10W difference is rather significant.

Plus, I think a more fair comparison would be the i7-640LM (2.13GHz, 25W TDP) to the i5-520M (2.4GHz, 35W TDP).

I'd pick the i7-640LM any day. You could sell off the i5-450M for $100-$150, I'd think. Sure, it's a little more costly, but it should be a noticeable difference in battery life.

After considering the i7-660UM (1.33GHz, 18W TDP), I'm not sure it's worth it in a laptop like this, as 1.33GHz will bottleneck the 5650M, I'd think.

The 620LM or 640LM don't offer any real world improvement for battery life since they idle at the same 5.24W as the normal M series and the also have slower IGP clock speeds. Yes they do have slightly higher clocks but thats only when your doing heavy loads. Under normal use and when on battery their is really no advantage. This is why almost no laptops are offering these versions (Including Apple), To get significant power savings you have to look at the ULM versions but they will have a performance reduction across the board.

370m wins with constant 2,4ghz then if you want battery life on load. Turbo boost was already reported to be eating a lot of battery time by overclocking constantly for things that didnt need any overclock. Like flash banners.

Did anyone report 370m envy14 battery life yet ?
Or can someone with a 450m or 520m compare battery time with turbo boost disabled in the bios ? (if hp bios didn't crap hide it)

Go to Walgreens and spend $4 on a small screwdriver set. Came across the one I have by accident while I was there to pick up a compressed air can. The screwdrivers look like they're cheaply made, but they do the job. Used them to open up my G50VT and reapply paste and blow out the fans.

Not really the best idea since most of these things are subjective. In fact, listing them in a manner which makes one look for these things, makes one more keen to these things which they may not have noticed or cared about before being told to look for them.

For instance, how does one define "fan noise?"

In any event, some potential fixes are listed on the first post. Have to read the whole thing.

Is anyone else having trouble getting their wifi to connect? Every other device in my home will connect to my router with no problem. But my new Envy, while it sees the connection fine, just won't connect. Any suggestions?

(by the way, I tried to search for this issue, but I must be doing something wrong, because I couldn't find anything)

Oh god this really sounds like a disaster. So many people having so many problems. And I got mine from ebay. Damn! I'm going to be sooooooo angry if there are any big problems with mine like CPU whine or dead pixels. If it has any problems I'm going to send it back, hope I get all my money back! And I'm just going to keep my dell studio until I find a better laptop.

Also, will my envy even connect to the internet in Australia with the intel wireless card? Or do I need the Broadcom card?

I am by no means sure on this one, but I would think wifi is wifi, isn't it? So, my guess is that it should connect fine.... Assuming you're not having some other connection type issue like I'm experiencing this morning. <sigh>

I really don't know, but if I was planning to use that option the last place I would get advice on finacial terms is a public forum. I would read all the terms and conditions from HP's website or have them email them to me.

Does anyone else have a slight color uniformity issue in the display? Its hardly noticeable but on some sites (this forum being the best example) some areas of white look slightly brighter or dimmer then others (it looks like an are to the left of center might be brighter). It also could just be my eyes because I don't see anything when I open paint and set the entire work surface as white.

I believe it is no interest for 6 months as long as u pay it in full. Even if there is $1 left to pay after 6 months they charge interest on EVERYTHING (the entire original price of the laptop).

I'm not sure if anyone has seen this yet, but someone put up another Envy 14 unboxing video on YouTube, and this one is 720p.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmKTLrFoo20&fmt=22

On another related note, I'm hoping I can order fairly soon. I think I've got the cash together. I'm thinking I'll go with the i5-450M... That was my biggest decision to make. I'll skip the slice battery for now, but HP seriously better sell it at a later date on their website like they've done with the Envy 13 and 15 slice batteries.

Edit: Linked the wrong video, sorry. It's fixed now.

For the folks with the CPU whine, record it and post it here or it didn't happen! I hear no whine whatsoever and barely hear the fan even though it's set to always on. Is this whine like 30 kHz or something, since only some special people seem to hear it. What are you doing when you hear the whine?

    Hi guys,

i'm new here and i don't even have my E14 yet. But i was reading all 890 pages of this thread just to get an idea about this piece of hardware. Some few pages ago someone wrote that the lid isn't metal but plastic. Is that confirmed ? I thought the E14 is completely metal. That would be quite some drawback for the stability.

I'm from Germany so i'm gonna get the model with the i520 i guess. But no one of the other Germans here complained about the CPU whine right ? Could it be that due to the fact that we can't customize our machines we get some preselected models ?

As far as I know, none of the Germans have complained of CPU whine. I'm not sure how much of a problem it really is.

I think you're mistaken about the lid being plastic-- it's definitely metal. Now, I have heard that the "glass" that covers the LCD might be plastic and not glass, but I don't know if anyone has confirmed this.

Just got my E14 yesterday. Love the build quality, screen, and much easier to carry around than my dell e1505.

The bottom does get pretty dang hot and the touchpad is not my favorite, but then again I've hated laptop touchpads in general.

Thank u ... for a moment i had a plastic-scare ( just because my Asus A6J starts to fall apart, especially the plastic lid around the hinges) ...

Anyways there is a easy way to determine whether the screen is plastic or metal. Knock with your incisor teeth against the screen (softly). I know sounds stupid and maybe look ridiculous but glass is harder than teeth and plastic is softer and u will immediately get the difference.
But i guess no one is really willing to attempt that.

I"m crossing my fingers for the whine.

    Hey,

I received my envy 14 yesterday and love the machine. After downloading a few of the recommended programs on the opening post, I realized that CPU ID said my machine is only running one core with two threads. Not only does this program recognize just a single core, but also System Information for Windows does too. In an earlier post someone advised running msconfig, going into boot options, advanced, and changing number of processors to 2. I did this, restarted my computer multiple times, yet all of the programs mentioned above continue to render my machine with only one core. Can anyone help?

    Thanks.

The intel 6200 will be fine in Aus or any other country. You do not want the broadcom.

Have you had any update on your envy 14 yet?

I had an email from Opal_cadet yesterday saying my E14 is on its way to her and I should get it Monday ish :)

The missing PCI Communication.. in the device manager is the driver for the Intel Management Engine Interface and its driver is located in the HP Driver folder SwSetup\Drivers\MISC1.

After clean install just have windows search this folder and the driver installs correctly. I did not install the Intel Management Software using the setup.exe, just the manual driver search/install.

Did you check the bios for an option enable multi core and reinstalled the thing named " turbo boost driver " on HP's driver page ? Those were the two other advices given for this problem.

A disaster? That's being just a tad melodramatic. All the people who had perfect envys have stopped reading/posting and are getting on with their lives. Everyone who has found a problem, no matter how small, has come back to post about it.

If you go on to Apple's support forums or youtube and search for issues, you'd think Macbook Pros are the worst computers in the world. Screen issues, heat issues, startup issues, build issues, keyboard issues (including flex).... The posters here characterize Apple as the go-to for reliability- a safe haven from the problems Envy users have faced. Not the case.

Bottom line is, you machine will come as it is, and fretting about it will get you nowhere.

Can anyone test overclocking the GPU and then sleep the computer and then resume right after, is the screen just black or is it working fine?

Dv6t SE just shows black screen when coming back from sleep or hibernate with an overclocked ATI-card (even if you switch to default clock or the Intel card).
