Yea, I was expecting amazing boot times with my ssd, but it's just eh. I think I timed it last startup as about 38 seconds to the login screen (I disabled to stupid quicksmart thing so it doesn't go to that screen either)

My boot with the intel SSD is 33 seconds to the desktop. Hopefully new ATI drivers with switchable graphics come out soon (for possibly better boot, and overclocking)

I got my HDD to boot in one minute to desktop and on the internet 5 seconds later. Just go to msconfig, and basically disable ( Startup and Services-hide the Microsoft stuff) all the HP stuff like WebAssist and other stuff that look unnecessary. The HP crap slows you down big time, I am on a "dirty install". Even if you have SSD you could try it to and see how fast you can get it to boot.

With and SSD and a clean install you shoul be able to boot in less than 35sec, that's what I saw in another thread.

Does anyone know if you have to ship it back in the original box? It'll be a big hassle if I have to use the same box

I think it has to be inside the black Envy box, they shouldn't care about the brown cardboard box.

You know that customs hold items over $1000 until you pay exta duty and GST right? I believe theres some paperwork involved as well.

It left HP on the 16th and arrived with her yesterday, she then sent it fedex to me and it is on route with an estimated date as tomorrow. I guess I have to pray that customs doesnt slow it up...

    But yes, incredibly fast shipping!

You're kidding right?!?! God I hate Australia. It sucks. Just plain sucks.

Oh and by the way, the ebay lady put the declared value of the laptop at $500 for customs. Do I still pay tax on it? Or is it just for items over $1000?

If they stop the laptop it will be slugged based on its value. But the likely-hood of it being stopped if she has lied about the value (ie bellow $1000) drops significantly.

I'll repeat this for the last time : WIFI DISCONNECT ISSUES
    1) Go in control pannel, device manager, find the wifi card, properties, go to the last tab on the right, disable the option "ALLOW WINDOWS TO SHUT DOWN THIS DEVICE TO SAVE POWER"

If that still doesn't fix it:

    2) Uninstall wifi drivers
    3) Reboot
    4) Reinstall lastest wifi drivers from intel website
    5) Reboot

Can someone put that on first page ? especially the 1) part that no one ever mentions.

(well I did mention it maybe 25 pages ago but it drowned)

When people say reinstall drivers, do you have to download them? Are they on the recovery disks or do you need that SW_setup folder?

When I sent it back, they said that I have to send it back with everything which it came with, including the original box. They just told me to cover up the original shipping labels.

Just a question, why would it be a hassle? I thought that it was much easier since I didnt have to go out to find a cardboard box to put it in.

Okay, in order to fix the fan cycling problem some people are experiencing. Can every person with the fan cycling problem go to their bios and post it's version and release date here.
I am worried the april bios is the one bios with fan threshold issues.
So, do you fan cycling people have a bios dated from april this year ?

Which drivers do you mean, new ones or something? I did a clean install and then ran the drivers from the swsetup folder. Boot time is 45 seconds to the desktop (w 500 GB HD).

I have the April (4/22) BIOS and have no fan cycling issues during regular web surfing, music listening etc. I can't even hear the fan unless I put my ear to it. When I was running wprime the fans got faster and louder but still not very loud and didn't cycle.

Go through all the items in the device manager and update the drivers with the ones in the SWSetup folder... assuming you saved it. That worked for me.

No matter what, they will not open the laptop up. They may open the packaging, but i would imagine they are very careful about it.

If its damaged, i would say its postage fault not customs. If you have to pay extra when you try to pick it up ;) then thats customs.

the one that you download and the one on the envy 14 (intel) page is the same as the april 22nd 2010 bios. check the .cva. the one on the thread on these forums says it's from april 22nd 2010

FYIY, expect several BIOS updates from HP, sometimes weekly. They mainly seem to alter the fan temp curves. Surprisingly they E 14 uses the same BIOS as the other envy's. F 02A is actually something like the 26th BIOS update for the envy 15 since the original F 04 BIOS on the original release in Sept '09.

Also they don't always give any reason (or all reasons) for what the new ones will change, it's always fun to see what happens, lol. For example the F 02A that the E 14 gets was listed as an uptdate for the E 15 to fix an issue with the touchpad enable/disable feature. Yep did that :) , but also changed fan startup RPM, fan turn on temp points for the GPU and sped up the POST by 5 seconds. This was a 'good' update, sometimes they are not so good.....

Its really whether you wanna take the chance on getting another i5. I dont have an i5 as i went with the i7 and i can tell you that you wont be disappointed with it. Battery life sucks (2hours) but the performance is amazing. And it doesnt get hot at all!

Yep, one surprised me with turning my computer into a brick :( . No way to recover and had to send it back for reflashing. The InSyde BIOS recovery options do not work with the format HP falshes the BIOS while in windows. This issue only happened once to a specific CPU version and was (fairly) quickly resolved....

BTW if they follow their screwy numbering system the next one will most likely be F 29. Every few updates goes with a Hexi format then back to sequencial numbering, so they don't always make sense.

My main concern that a i7 upgrade from a i5 450m is going to be at least $200. Do you guys think if i threaten to return the laptop for good they will give me some kind of discount?

(Clean Install of Windows 7 Ultimate, Sw folder drivers were installed, Updated Intel WiFi Drivers, Updated BIOS & HP Quick Launch drivers installed )

My problem is not the functionality of the wireless button. My problem is the LED under the F10 wireless key. The LED does not change to orange when the WiFi is toggled off. It remains white. Now, the only time that the wireless key is orange is during boot up.
