yea, so envy 13 is eligible
guess they're trying to unload them before they discontinue it

the ATI 5650 will probably be the bottleneck when it comes to gaming. By "bottleneck" I mean this is what will be limiting most games. The 820qm CPU by all means will be able to handle most any games on the market right now and paired with the 5650, it will be terrific but if you want the MAX of your system, then the GPU will be limiting factor. But either way gaming a quad + the 5650 will perform very well. Of course a 5850/70 would be even sweeter with the best i7 option.
yeah with running tons of programs you'll want the ram for it, which I feel 4gb is just right, hopefully you got the 1dimm option for future cheap/easy upgrading. But yeah that 820qm will multitask like a mofo. 8 threads of smooth buttery processing. But like I said, battery life will take a hit, especially with the discrete graphics on all the time. -
Yea, when your computer is sluggish and you see that HDD led blinking like mad and the hard drive making noise, there are the "every times" a SSD will render silent and instant.
Also for those still wondering the i7 frequencies on 4 3 2 1 core here's a picture I found.

Link fixed.
And there... a sheet for the i5 , 450 and 370 are missing but they are respectively 2.4ghz (2.66 + turbo be it with one or two cores) and 2.4 ghz no turbo. Now is the 75$ upgrade cost worth the 266mhz turbo and little extra integrated graphic power ? That's up to you.

Screen shot and repost please!
I hear you can only write on an SSD so many times.
Thats sketchy.
Mind you I replace my laptop every ~2-3 years (well this is my first replacement and it took me 3 years to feel outdated) -
Link doesn't work.
-
^ don't mind that about the "so many write times" on SSD's. I think it's overblown. I mean you don't always want to be writing over large amounts of data on and off of it such as a means of transferring data from one device to another. But just normal use, installing games etc, uninstalling and using it, it will last for a long time.
I've heard of more regular HDD failing from simple drops and mechanical errors than I've heard of someone using too many writes that their ssd got slow and unusable. -
Can someone please explain to me why I should get the Envy 14 over the dv6t at this point? Because the dv6t is really tempting me.
-
Better screen, bigger battery, lack of plastic, better looks, and "premium support" whatever that means.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
dost thou desire a 1600x900 resolution and a 14.5 incher?
if no. get the damn dv6t:se -
isn't the graphics in the dv6t a 5450 or something like that? A lot weaker than 5650.. that's one reason I won't consider it.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
dv6t:se (and probably non se) can upgrade to the 5650
-
yeah the dv6t is a 5450, but the dv6tse is 5650.
-
Yea, I meant to say the dv6tse. I might just go for that and get a better monitor for my dorm room, that's the only place I'll really care about the resolution anyways...
-
^ well damn that's nice. too bad it's a 15.6", thanks for that info magus, I hadn't gone all the way through CTO.
-
Idk about the 6t but in the 6t:se you can up it to the 5650...comes out about 150 less than the Envy with HPA
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah. dv6t:se has a acouple nice things hiding in the cto.
5650.
backlit keyboard + fingerprint reader. -
If u guys want an FAQ, I can link to your post. Just message me when you have it ready
-
Thank you very much.

+1. Reminds of the whole Plasma TV only has a 60,000 hour life span etc etc. Sure that scares some people but by the time you even reached that point it would have been way past the time to upgrade to a new TV anyways. Plus it's hard to reach that number unless you watched 8-10 hours of TV a day, which isn't good for anyone anyways. Same with SSD's, you won't likely reach the limit unless you're actively writing data all the time.

I know this has been debated over and over, but I can't seem to decide on the i5-450 or the i5-520. I plan on majoring in college in computer science, as well as playing games like WoW, sc2, and bfbc2. Anyone have any idea which would be the better choice for those uses?
-
zioep - is money an issue? If so save the $100 and stick to the 450m. If not the 520m may see some better results when you are at max turbo boost for single threaded apps. But even if I had the money, I'd get the 450m without a doubt.
-
dude, if 1st gen m11x with it's 1.3Ghz can handle any game just fine, base envy 14 will do even better.
-
OP, or one of the first posters in this thread: can we get a continually edited running list of coupon codes, BCB availability, and third-party reviews of this thing so that people don't have to dig through hundreds and hundreds of posts to find what they're after?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
one of the first posters'll pull that off but at the moment there's: 0 coupon codes, 10% BCB or 10% student discount, 0 third party reviews.
kinda annoyed that HP doesn't let endgadget or something review the thing beforehand but oh well. we'll see come july 15th or so -
Yeah, a SSD should outlast by several years a HDD provided you always download consumable big files (movies/Itune) straight into an external drive, that's an advice if you're downloading 24/7.
-
No way everyone who is getting theirs on the June 7th better tell me whats up right from the get go!
Hm. So aznguy, if you had the money would you get the quad core?
I am in disbelief of the alienware 1.3 ghz little laptop that can do that I've seen gameplay vids its pretty smooth!
Also,
Whats the name of that thing that uses both HDD and SSD, it was like Terminus X or something? -
Ok guys, I'm having some serioius second thoughts...thoughts so serious that I pick up my phone to cancel the order.
Here is the story.
I configured an hp dm4 for $1,198.99 with
* Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
* Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-540M Dual Core processor (2.53GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz
* 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
* FREE Upgrade to 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
* 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5450 switchable graphics
* 14.0" diagonal High-Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366 x 768)
* SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
* HP TrueVision Webcam + Fingerprint Reader + Digital Microphone
* Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
* Full-size island-style keyboard
* 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)
* Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
* FREE Upgrade to Computrace LoJack for Laptops, Four Years from One Year
* HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
I ordered an envy 14 for $1358.09 with only 4 GB ram (1dimm) and an i5-520m processor. Do you honestly think that the extra money is worth it? I also got an external monitor to use in my dorm room, so I don't know if the screen is that important or not... -
The Envy 14 should have a better battery and a much better chassis. If neither of those things matter to you (if it's always plugged in and you don't care how flashy or durable it is), than the DM4 is probably the way to go.
4GB vs. 8GB makes little difference at this point unless you do photo editing with a lot of layers and effects, run a lot of VMs, etc. If it's just for school work and games, it shouldn't make any difference. -
Yes, I personally played with it for 3 month and it handled any game I threw in beautifully, on top of occasional Photoshop editing and even some video editing.
-
I do care about durability b/c I will be taking it to classes and the library in my backpack.
Ugh, why does this have to be such a tough decision??? -
make it and i will gladly link to you
-
Cheme. Pay the extra one fifty, come on its worth it to not have to upgrade sooner! I know money doesn't grow on trees, but push the little extra!
-
Alright let me start with some simple FAQ answers:
CPU - that's the toughest because it all depends on what you want to do with your PC but here's my summary:
i3 - dual core, multithreaded, integrated GPU, no Turbo Boost. Ok for basic desktop tasks like web browsing, flash, MS Office, and some gaming.
i5 - dual core, multithreaded, integrated GPU, Turbo Boost. i5-430 and 450 are just same CPU but slightly faster clock speeds. Performance between the two in general is probably less than 10%. i5-520m offers some additional instructions for hardware virtualization and AES encryption which just aid in processing more quickly with a few other benefits
i7 - quad core, multithreaded, no integrated GPU, Turbo Boost - Quad core is powerful, capable of processing eight threads simultaneously, clock speeds generally slower than an i5, but have advantage of processing more threads. No integrated GPU means less battery life because it will be using the dedicated GPU all the time. Most likely 50% less battery life.
Screen - 1600x900 Radiance standard and only option, so not much to say, just it's supposed to be the absolute best
Hard Drive / SSD - Hard Drives = cheap, effective storage while adding noise, vibration, and heat. SSD = expensive, fast storage, with no vibration or noise with minimal heat and power consumption. Current gen SSD's have a long life, probably much longer than you'd ever keep your laptop unless you do constant read/writes to it 24/7.
Memory = 4GB recommended. Two sticks is fine. You can get a 5-10% performance benefit running dual channel, or two sticks of the same size and speed. But a single chip gives the benefit of just popping in a new chip later. It's not a big deal really. The $25 you'd pay now, you can always pop out a 2GB chip, sell it probably for $25, and put in a 4GB module giving you 6GB RAM. Otherwise, if you know you'll want 8GB then maybe go with single 4GB.
Battery - The slice battery is apparently the "6 cell" battery they offer for $200 at the moment. It basically form fits the entire bottom of the laptop and is thin and gives an extra 50% or more battery life. No need to swap batteries as it works "smartly" with the built in 8 cell battery. Do a search at images.google.com for "envy slice battery" to see what it looks like.
Ok, thats all I have time for now. Welcome any updates. Will update later. That was all just basic typing regurgitation, so forgive formatting and basic info. I'll volunteer to start a separate "Envy 14 FAQ's" section if 2.0 will be so gracious as to allow me to do such a thing. -
I'll copy it to the first post and give you proper credit. It's well done.
-
Do the differences between the hd5450 and hd5650 not matter at all to you? They're like two completely different graphics options...
-
one can game, one can't.
-
The unknown hd5450
Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450
The well known hd5650
Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
Also, since the HD5450 doesn't have bench marking, to figure out how different they may be, check this out which is between them:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4570.13885.0.html
spoiler alert, It has half the capability of the 5650 and is ABOVE the 5450... so... -
But see, I configured the dm4t with twice the ram and one up on the processor. For all intensive purposes, I use my 360 to game..
-
I think I'm going to go with the dv6tse, with that $300 off coupon I get all this for $1138. Too good to pass up on.
-
Bleh never mind, it was too good to be true. Can't combine an instant rebate with a coupon.
-
I like how HP doesn't have option for 5xx series i5 and 250GB SSD, because thats what I would get if I was going to get dvt6se for $300 off, so they are forcing you to spend money somewhere else. I can't put i7 regardless of price because of battery life (or lack there of) and non switchable graphics.
I do like free upgrade to 6 GB though. -
*Throws up hands*
What the hell. I'm keeping the Envy 14. This forum has made me crazy. I'm going to not come back for a while...that is until people start getting them in and post reviews. Thanks for the help, everyone. -
I think I'm just going to order one right now and forget about all this. This is driving me nuts. I can always return the laptop if I don't like it. Whatever.
-
Well i just called HP sales to ask if they would take off the Office 2010 starter ed and the PSP software and thus take some money off the price of the Envy 14. I really wanted to see it they would bite. Anyway he obviously said no. Also asked about coupons and the response i received was that the 200-300 coupons only come out when they want to get rid of something quickly and that not to expect coupons on the envy 14 for 4-6 mos.
-
Crap, that would suck if it's true. I have to have a laptop before august 20th-ish, so can't wait for that to happen. Might hold out a little longer to see if the options get shuffled up a little and then just use my 10% student discount and bite the bullet, because I really want this thing
-
4-6 months? Ok then I think I'll just order today or tomorrow. I'm getting the idea that the Envy 14 is pretty much HP's most popular item right now and they're going to milk it by not giving out coupons or extra discounts. Darn your business greed HP
-
that's great but has one flaw. There is no need to mislead people on i3 capabilities. i3 & i5 both will offer similar performance during most tasks, unless you are doing some heavy video editing. Performance difference of i5 will go unnoticed, but the price paid will
-
Thats exactly what the sales rep said - well not in those words but thats the idea.
Edit - asked about 25% BCB and he didnt know. -
obviously
i dont get where people get these crazy ideas that they are going to immediately discount something that is brand new
or those maniacs who think even though BCB is being discontinued in a month, they will give a whopping 25% off for no reason
my guess is that when the back to school sales go on, maybe we get this down to the $999 pricepoint again, or they do some throw ins or discount the upgrades a bit
