What's this I keep hearing about a second round? Is there a new envy 14 that fixes the whine issue?

No, just there are regular refreshes to every laptop. It could be three months or six months or never. Nobody knows when or what will be added or addressed.

Orders I believe from the 9th or 10th thru the 14th.

So pretty soon well see if QC stepped up after the first batch.

so the bcb banner when you search up HP isn't even showing up anymore.

it looks likes bcb is dead. my hope for that 160gb ssd is pretty much dead (although i'll still wake up early just in case T.T)

so i looked at the momentus XT you all talked about....

it has 4gb of flash memory, so there's 495gb of hard drive memory?

how much faster is it than an hdd, and how much slower than an ssd?

how does the tech. work? if there's only 4gb of "adaptive memory" or whatever they call it, then won't only certain things be faster and certain things normal speed?

Yeah that's true, Also if i upgrade to windows professional (student discount) I can just do a clean install when I upgrade from win7 home? I think they give you an option to completely install windows again or just upgrade.

so my question is, will completely installing windows professional be the same as a clean install?

    yeah.

you'd boot it from the disc, eventually pick custom when that options is available and go from there

Ok so 2fingerscroll program works great, only problem is that when it's running it's impossible to highlight stuff (one finger click the left button and the other drag the mouse to highlight). The cursor just gets stuck. This is not because of any of the tapping mechanisms in the program (One + one finger, two finger, two + one finger, or three finger) as I disabled them all and the problem was still there. However, if you go to the scrolling tab and turn 'scroll type' to off, you are able to highlight things again. I notice no difference in scrolling or anything with this off, so I definitely recommend turning it off as I don't even know what it did, besides conflict with synaptics

could someone please answer the question of did you guys purchase the extended warranty?

Is it worth it to get it for the envy 14 or just stick with the 1 year warranty out of the box?

I am not sure if it is worth spending extra 275 bucks...Thanks!

I did not, nor do I ever, purchase an extended warranty. Warranties, in general, only cover defects in craftsmanship. Defects are most likely going to manifest themselves within the first year anyway, so why bother with paying so much extra?

Accidental coverage is something that may warrant your money, depending on how you take care of your stuff and what sort of environment the machine is likely to be in.

One reason I do not purchase either is that my rental insurance policy will cover (with full replacement) anything that happens to my computers minus a $100 deductible. That, to me, is much more effective for a few reasons:
    • No upfront costs
    • Deductible is lower than the cost of an accidental warranty
    • A brand new machine of my choosing (that falls in the same cost bracket as the original machine)

Extended warranties, in my opinion, are just a way to pay more for your machine instead of less.

    IMHO, NO.

I really do believe I you take good care of your things you won't need a warrant (lojack is different)

I've owned multiple lappys and never nce needed a warranty. Same goes for my led tvs .

But it's really up to you and where you will be bringing your lappy.

More info on this please... can you actually disable the button areas as "touchpad" areas for the most part? People claimed you could do that with the last set of drivers, but you really can't. Also, how new are these drivers? I updated my touchpad drivers as soon as I got my Envy and you couldn't disable any areas of the touchpad with those...

Would it be possible to get a screenshot of the setting adjustment that does this?

If I knew I could fix this, I might reorder down the line with the next big coupon... assuming the QC has improved...

No. there's no difference in setting.

it just behind the scenes doesn't recognize your finger on the edge anymore if you've also got a finger somewhere else.

edit: actually. my touchpad doesn't recognize the buttons as a part of the mouse moving thing at all now.

that's different. I mean it's a bit iffy. The hard-coded deadzone doesn't start where the line is..but a bit below it.

it also extends to the edge of the touchpad.

this also my be happening since my palmcheck is on max. and my touch sensitivity is like 70ish%

Your renter's insurance covers craftsmanship defects and accidental damage? My renter's insurance would cover things like theft, fire, water heater exploding, and other hazards that my other property is protected from. But an overheating GPU or an SSD failure is not the kind of thing covered by most insurance plans, at least to my knowledge. Awesome if your carrier does cover that. I could add accidental damage to my insurance policy, but the increase in the premium was very high. In the end, I found the manufacturer's warranty with accidental damage protection to actually be a better deal.

Yep, I'm covered. I had a laptop a couple years back that fell off a table and landed right on the corner. It completed cracked the case and busted the screen. Called up insurance, faxed them an invoice for the original machine, and they sent me a check (minus $100 deductible) towards a new machine in the same price range - no hassle whatsoever.

My brother-in-law recently damaged his laptop when my nephew spilled milk on it. Same insurance company, same no-hassle replacement.

USAA is pretty great that way, among other reasons.

so i figured i would plug my computer directly into my modem and use a wired internet connection to download this since i simply cant do it on wifi, but when i do that it tries to identify the connection for about a minute and then it finally cant do it so it comes up that there is no internet connection.

edit-nvm the wired one is working now. and extremely fast too :).. ne ways i'll try and download it now... i wonder why it took 3 tries for the wired connection to work

So im making me E14 right now, would 6 gigs of ram and the i5-520M have a noticeable speed increase in general computing gaming? or is it bottlenecked by something else. Also, are there any differences in the whining between 450's and 520's?

Well, I just called HP resolutions to go through with returning my envy, but then she asked if I had talked to HP technical support, and I said no, and I figured I'd give it a shot. I could barely hear him even with the volume turned all the way up on the phone, but he did seem fairly knowledgeable. It's hard to describe the details of the "whine" to him as I really don't know when and why it happens, but it just does. He told me to uninstall and reinstall my sound drivers as he thought that could be the problem, but that didn't work, no surprise. Then I went into the BIOS and he asked if I could hear the noise while in the BIOS, because if I couldn't, that would mean it wasn't a hardware problem, and honestly I couldn't hear the noise but that doesn't mean anything...idk when that crap happens lol. So now I'm restoring my laptop to factory settings, and if it's still there, then it's an issue.

NOTE: He said he had never heard of this issue before, and I said that there were many people online who are having the same whine issue as I am. He asked if they had called HP about it. He urged us to call because then they can make a record of the problem and if it's widespread enough they will see if there's a manufacturing problem and such, so I recommend you guys call HP and tell them about the whine.
I also told him about my hp logo issue lol. I really don't wanna send mine in for repair or some sht, just wanna get a new one.

people barely ever use 4 gigs, so unless you do ALOT of multi tasking, 4 is fine.

And the 450 and the 520 are pretty much the same card with the same performance, especially for an average user/gamer.

BDF92, your biggest bottleneck will probably be the underclocked graphics card =_=

go for an SSD if you want improved general speeds (not all games will benefit from this though, only things that load frequently (like, if they load levels as you go etc))
