I'm probably doing that. With the recession slowly waning, I'm won't be surprised of RAM prices drop again. A few DRAM makers are finished with their cost-cutting and it helps somewhat that Samsung is purposely cutting DRAM investment so it doesn't get antitrust authorities breathing down their neck for being too big and dominant. Within a year or so, we should see prices stabilizing and dropping.

I'm going to order the base configuration. I will be doing school work, programming, and play Aion. The CPU and GPU should be more than enough to max Aion, I think. Can anyone recommend an upgrade for my purposes? My budget is about $1200~ but less spent is better.

No just visit Student discount - HP Academic Purchase Program and then create an account. If you have already created an account, just make a new one with a different email address, that is what I did.

The items you order should show an "HPA" tag indicating you are receiving the 10% discount.

That's the joy of living in China - my friend's laptop had the same issue, so I took it into a repair shop I trust. 30 minutes and 200 RMB (~$30) later, the fried screen controller had been tested and replaced. My GPU was a bit more troublesome - overnight for 200 RMB, not a hiccup since.

I'm just hoping my shop will be as capable with a higher-end machine like the Envy 14 - I'll probably be the only person out of the 8 million in Wuhan who has one when I come back in August, so they're not likely to have previous experience with the model like they did with the Inspiron 1420...

Alternately, you could log out of your account, open a customer service chat, and get them to sign your account up for academy - that way your account stays tied to your primary email address (assuming it was in the first place). If you ever want to take advantage of coupons or BCB, you can reverse the process via a chat or phone call as well.

On their returns site it says from the day it is shipped
"The HP Home & Home Office Store will accept product returns and exchanges for most products up to 21 days after delivery. No return items include opened boxed software, oversized products such as Designjet Z2100 series printers, the HP Color LaserJet CP6015dn printer, and Gift Cards (except where required by law)."

Sooooo...to the people out there who have school or other commitments starting around August and are waiting for a coupon or BCB promotion, when do you plan to buy the Envy? School for me starts around the 18th, so I plan to move in around late July/early August. Assuming HP uses UPS, I may have to have it shipped to a customer location. I'm a little wary of carrying a big box to my apartment if I'm living in some of the bad areas...

I don't have school in September, and I live in CA. I go to Montana every year in August, so I'll ship there to dodge taxes, unless a different and incredible coupon comes up before then.

I honestly think HP went cheap on the E14. The base price should be somewhere around 1200. They could have skipped the ODD and made the laptop a bit thinner and lighter. Damn thing weighs like a brick. At least it's a power brick... If the trackpad is to follow suit from the other Envy's then I'd be sorely disappointed to say the least.

I had been following all of the threads and news articles leading up to the release of this laptop, but I am quite frankly underwhelmed... Not due to the laptop itself, but 1) timing and 2) HP's extremely good deals on its other laptops. College starts in August and I'm not going down to wire just to get this thing on time with a coupon or BCB. Because of this, I just ordered a dv6t SE for $950 with i5-450, 6GB RAM, 5650 graphics, Blu-Ray, high cap battery, and a bigger screen. I couldn't pass that up, especially for college.

I really wanted the Envy but I'm not one to dive into the unknown (at a premium price.)

gonna guesstimate 2 to 3 weeks.

if there's a backlog/a ton of orders and you're farther down the line 3-5 weeks to 5-7 weeks if we take the envy 17's as an example.

7 weeks only if you're really unlucky.

Depends, from what I'm gathering its 2-3 weeks if I read the info right, about 10 days to build, 5-7 to ship. That's considering no delays though, I'll probably order mine by the 11th so it has plenty of time to get here before August 19.

does the Envy 14 have any plans on going retail B&M like the 13/15 with Best Buy? That'd be nice since I won't be purchasing til late next month probably. I'm guessing 17 is not in B&M?

Well, I'm waiting to see what exactly the Envy 14-1050ca is for 1500 CDN. I'm looking to spend more like 1000 CDN though, so a 25% cashback is nice. The specs I'm looking at come to 1299... 1 dimm 4GB and the 520 for the advance AES + . And I plan on putting another 4GB stick in there. I barely survive on 6GB RAM on my desktop, so 8 will be nice.

Don't be sad :O There probably were just too many posts and it was overlooked.

It seems most people recommend either not upgrading the CPU at all, or upgrade to the i5 450m. For ram, if you don't feel like upgrading anytime soon, don't bother with anything. If you think you might upgrade soon, get the 1dimm 4 gb option. There's no point in upgrading through HP, given their prices (I think)

a solid state drive is probably out of your budget, as is the slice battery. If you absolutely need more battery life, get another 8 cell :]

    Hope this helps

Well, if you don't need more hard drive space than 320GB, and the 160GB SSD is too much, then the most worthwhile upgrade I think would be to get the i5-450. Turbo boost is a pretty good feature to have i believe.

    It got lost.

For your stuff eh. If you want you can upgrade to the 450m.

as for gpu, there's only one, the 5650, and that'll be fine for any mmo that's out right now (so yeah should be fine for aion).

4 gigs of ram is ok.

320 gig or 500gig if you need space. or SSD if you wanna spend for it.

with respect to processors the i3 370m is equivalent to the i5 450m except it lacks the turbo boost that the i5 has.

both are 2.4ghz base speed. There may be a little bit else here and there in the i5, we dunno. Neither of 'em have been out for long.

i3 may last a bit longer. Also it has a weaker integrated graphics card than the i5. But you're using the radeon 5650 for games so *shrugs* that's a wash.

^ I was just checking out the Envy 15... it's only an inch bigger than the E14 and very well priced for what it has, 5830 and i7. I assume battery life is rather poor but aside from size, no ODD, what are the issues with this? It seems like a really nice build. Same weight as an E14.. two HDD slots > ODD. Is there backlit keyboard? Heat problems? I'm gonna go look up reviews =)

I think the base config will suit your needs. I played Aion during release with my 2+ year old desktop with an E8400 3GHz CPU, Nvidia 9800 GTS, and 2GB RAM on max settings so I'm guessing Aion will run just fine on the base config Envy 14. I'd personally go for the 450m since ive been hearing such good things about it from following the forums for the past week if you can afford to drop another $75. Hope that helps :)

No backlit, plastic edge around the screen, 1.5 hr max battery, has a high frequency noise but some old folks won't be able to hear it.. Those are the reasons I returned my dual ssd envy 15 =/

Otherwise, its a really nice laptop. I really liked it.

nice find TK. Just wonder what screen it has. If it's all ready to ship it could be one of those pre-built models with a 1366x768 like on amazon.

*edit* "HD BrightView Infinity LED Display (1366 x 768)" how is HP's brightview infinity displays?

question.. say this low res screen is for real. Do you guys think it'll still be nice, like the color gamut, brightness, "radiance" etc? Just in the lower resolution.

the E15 has had some real horrible issues and they offered full refunds to the affected owners at one point, purple tinted webcams, lockups and freezes or where the screen blanks out, the screwy touchpad, the overheating issues, the battery life, and also they were priced really high at the base config, didn't even come with a free dvd drive you had to pay extra for the external one. I'm not sure how many of those problems were even fixed, last I heard the screen blanking problem was unsolved by the bios updates that were meant to fix it. right now theres lots of coupon deals on the e15, it would take a really good one though to convince me to buy.

there arent many pre built models. I contacted amazon and they said their models arent even built yet. I already said that in this thread.
