I got the DM4t last week and it's pretty good except some fan noise, if Envy 14 is only $200 more I will return the DM4t and get the Envy. Better screen, graphic card and premium line. I feel Envy 14 is like Acura and DM4t is like Honda~

Oooh thanks much, if this is true, not just the 2 exhausts but if the side one has been moved to the right, this could be HUGE for dealing with left palmrest heat.

Planning to call in for the return RMA on my e17 tonight, very likely to order an e14 in it's place and give it a test, though going from a nice large screen to a small one will be kinda sad. Don't know if I want to sit without a laptop for 2 weeks waiting for reviews though.

Thanks for the confirmation. Happy to hear and frustrated immensely as such a similar design on the e17 would have made it perfect IMO. As is, e17 isn't usable for me due to heat. Putting all that under the numpad that I never use would have done wonders for my experience.

Yep E14 has an exhaust on the right side and the slot load on the left..I never noticed that the slot load was on the right for the E17. Hopefully this means the E14 won't have the same heat issues as the E17 (knock on wood). My Swissgear Lancer backpack arrived today, definitley looks nice and it has tons and tons of pockets..it will be great for college and it has a padded pocket for my Envy =) Recommend it for anyone that needs to buy a backpack for school. I got it for $35 when BCB was 25% (original price is 70). I have been looking for a sleeve too, am looking at this one atm ( The Cache: laptop protection with minimal bulk: TOM BIHN) a little pricey but it seems like good material.

No its not... Lvivkse, where do you see cheaper 256 GB SSD's?

    Amazon.com: 256 gb ssd

The $600-1000 range 256gb ssd's on that site not including shipping & tax say otherwise

the cheapest 256 GB SSD on newegg is $550 or so, which makes HP's price of $565 decently close. 256 GB SSDs can cost up to about $750, so depending on what model it is, it might be a good deal, like with the 160 gb SSD

Ya, just FYI, if you get an i7 and a platter drive, there will still be heat issues, it will just be questionably noticeable if it's localized to the right side of the laptop. I strongly urge anyone who will actually be using theirs as a laptop to go with an i5 or less, and an ssd to avoid heat. I definitely learned my lesson from the e17.

And ya, the swissgear bags are awesome, I love mine in the 17 inch flavor. If I do end up going with an e14, I'll return/replace with with a 14 inch version.

For a secondary storage hdd (in hdd caddy) would you rather have:

    a) 500GB Momentus XT Hybrid or
    b) 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD7500BPVT

My Os/App drive will be 160gb SSD.

I'm under the impression that the momentus won't do much if it's not an OS/app drive. (it caches stuff that's used a lot in the 4gig ssd spot, but if that's not the os booting up/apps being used..well..*shrugs*)

I'd go with the 750 gig one

Well...just got an email back from HP
I told them I was disappointed with the CPU options and asked if they were going to offer the i5-540 or i7-620 in the future, asked about the specs of the 2 different SSDs, and asked to confirm if the $200 battery upgrade is in fact the slice battery, because while people here have said it is, the wording still made me doubt it.

    "Dear ******,

Thank you for contacting the HP Home & Home Office Sales Center

I understand that you are considering purchasing the new HP ENVY 14 series Notebook PC at the HP Home & Home Office Store, but you have some concerns on its components.

We don't any information if the processor options will change any time soon. I am sorry for the inconvenience. Also, I regret to inform you that as of the moment we still don't have any detailed information on its entire specifications. Please check with us again for more updates.

With regard to the battery of the HP ENVY 14 series Notebook PC, it is not a slice battery."

    Hmmm...

I think it's been proved before that the people taking orders and responding to emails are pretty clueless. With that said, I ordered the 'extended battery' and if it's not the slice, it's all going back.

Amazon has updated the Technical Details on their Pre-Order model:
14.5" diagonal HD+ HP Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900); ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 switchable graphics with 1024MB DDR3 with up to 3738MB total graphics memory; SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support; Beats Audio

The Product Description & Datasheet still say it is 1366 x 768. And the battery estimates are also off, so... yeah, still conflicting information.

Still catching up to this thread, sorry if this info is a repost.

If the screen truly is the Radiance display, isn't that a decent deal for Californians at $1,199 with no taxes? $500gb, Radiance, i5-450M, 6gb...I might have to consider!

I'm still planning to purchase this, but I want all the facts straight before I order from Amazon. I could spend the additional $140.00 on HP Website to get the display I want, but I'd rather use that money to swap out the Harddrive for a Seagate Momentus XT.

If I had to guess though it probably will be a bit before these units will be released. HP will most likely fulfill all their orders first before completing the ones for Amazon. The ENVY 17 has been sitting on the site in pre-order status over a month... just a guess though, I have no affiliation with Amazon or their order process.

In my experience with HP CTO notebooks (I got a dv5000z, a tx2000z, and a tx2500z, and it seems like they drop ship huge batches of them at a time from China, and in each case I got my laptop in 2-3 business days, even though I took the free 5-7 business days shipping every time. I hope things are still running as smoothly now as they were a couple summers ago.

Hah. If you want to talk about funny e-mails, check out some of the ones Woot.com sends out. They once sent out a mass e-mail to customers concerning a redundancy in a cable promotion. They told buyers that if they ever dared to try double-dipping by using their other coupon code, they said "We'll do more than just deliver the cables. And I'll give you a hint. It doesn't involve TVs."

I have been looking too..I found this one it seems really nice a little high of a price point but still cheaper than HPs. The Cache: laptop protection with minimal bulk: TOM BIHN. Looks sleek and it has nice material. The size 2S-Horizontal seems to be perfect for the E14 it has interior dimensions of 14.5 × 10.8 × 1.7 inches and it isnt bulky at all. Costs $30 looks like a good buy.

Lets not forget that the official marketing materials specify it as a slice. I'll trust that over a sales person who, for the most part, has the same information that's given on the order page which just specifies an 'extended' battery.

High Performance Laptops w/ Free Audio Software | HP Envy Features

In other news, I took the advice of someone else, and tried to downgrade from a 520m to a 450m....they ended up giving me $50 off my whole order, (not 100 as someone else had received) but it's better than nothing...I was planning on getting the 520 anyway :p....

Also, it is still "6GB DDR3 System Memory (3 DIMM)". 3 DIMM ? Maybe Amazon is just copying information from the HP website.

Anyway, the same config on HP cost $1315 now. Add tax then subtract 10% student/BCB discount, the difference is around $100 (using 8.75% sales tax for CA). I might order this instead if they can confirm the screen resolution and release date.

wow Hp is soooo sneaky. Its like they dont care about customers at all and just want to seep the money from everyone. Even dell is better which is why they have a much bigger market share. Lied about slice battery, which they stated was a slice with regards to the envy line when you clicked the help me choose button when upgrading. Lied multiple times about the battery life. Lied about the start price, lied about the base specs. Seriously not just sales reps or what not. IT WAS DIRECTORS of hp. check youtube videos. I have a feeling this is going to be a let down. Might as well all boycott their cheating sale tactics. I have a feeling im going to return my envy 14.

That Amazon pre-order looks pretty good now @ $1,199 with 1600x900 screen.

So if you compare this to CTO version,

    Base MSRP $1,099
    i5 450 (+$75)
    6GB DDR3 (+$100)
    500GB HDD (+$40)
    Total $1,314
    w/ ~8% tax -> ~$1419
    w/ 10% EPP -> ~$1277

So it is actually cheaper to buy the model from Amazon if you like the configuration as-is, assuming you don't have any other coupons. Also one other advantage is if Amazon gets it, you can opt for 1 day shipping and have ENVY 14 sitting on your lap the very next day :D

A - we know that the Envy 14 has a slice

B - a regular replacement battery costs $75, the 6-cell extended battery is $200, indicating that it's superior to the 8-cell replacement.

C - some reps have confirmed that it is a slice, some haven't, but most of us should have learned not to trust HP's reps by now - they're not well-informed, but they often answer questions anyway.

If it's not the slice, what would it be? Why would they make and market a weaker extra battery than the basic one? If it's not the slice, then where is the slice that's always mentioned alongside the Envy 14 itself?

Finally, if it's not the slice, they're giving a whole lot of us at least $150 back or taking a whole ton of returns in the first few days they start arriving in customers' hands.

soo how did you guys get like 50-100$ off for trying to downgrade components. Did you have to do that like right after you ordered? I tried but my order was already being produced.

Agreed. There's no way it can be just another smaller battery for $200. Still, it would be nice if the configurator stated that it was a slice.

Btw buying the amazon config direct through hp with student discount is still cheaper than the amazon price. Cause you dont get student discounts with that. Amazon is cheaper for all others as BCB is now only 5%.

Hmm, actually, this conflicting information on the "extended battery" and the Amazon config might be a good opportunity to finagle a discount - not counting the "extended battery", I paid about the same for my setup with less RAM and less hard drive space than the Amazon model. Those upgrades combine for about $100 more on HP's CTO. Then, if the rep is convinced it's not the slice battery, then I definitely won't stand for $200 for it...

Best case scenario, $200 off... Worst case, probably cancelling my order, rebuying from Amazon (or pricematching through HP) and figuring out what to do about the slice later. Not sure if I like the worst-case there, since I can't be sure that Amazon would deliver it before I head back to China...

...waffling on the call - I'll definitely update you guys if I ring them up.
