$1,183.49 with SD through direct HP with same specs
tax should be same for both, both have free shipping. Basically just like 10 bucks

Unless you meant in the US... (which still has HP in the lead)

    Just sayin'

And these "lies" you are talking about aren't really "lies." A lot of what you thought was fact was speculation or proposed information.

Amazon wouldn't charge me tax, so it's almost $100 cheaper than the student discount - probably true for most of us, really.

    I wrote a pretty straightforward walk-through yesterday. Here's how I did it:

    1. Call HP at 1-888-650-1544 (this is their CTO PC cancellation line)
    2. Tell them you ordered the 520m processor option, but would like to know if you can change that to the 450m processor option.
    3. They will tell you that once you place an order, it is final, however you can attempt to request a cancellation, otherwise you will have to return it.
    4. Tell them you understand and this is okay.
    5. They will ask for your order number, give this information to them (can be found by clicking on order status at hp.com and logging in). You will also need to verify billing/shipping address info
    6. Right before they process the cancellation, they will first ask how important making the change to your processor is.
    7. Ask them what they had in mind instead.
    8. They will offer the $100 credit for not cancelling your order
    9. Accept the offer.
    10. Enjoy your $100 credit!!

[Sneaky, evil MOD EDIT] Forgot to add YMMV. :D

well maybe recently they have caught up, but the only thing that was speculation was the battery life, the slice battery is stated when you click help me choose when upgrading. An hp director even said i5 at 999 base. YouTube - New HP Envy Notebooks

Meh, they gave a lot of transparency to their early planning stages to create the hype machine, and then they cut off the transparency as it came closer to release time, knowing the hype machine would keep on feeding. If they're smart, they even have a savvy marketing department that knew exactly when to drop the different spec sheets that we have seen popping up on different HP sites - spec sheets like the Australian one feed the hype, while including some specs low enough to introduce a small amount of disappointment while still keeping the hype level up. Once they released with some unwelcome deviations from the original statements, we were all ready to be a little disappointed, but we were prepared by the slight disappointments of the previous information 'leaks' to keep riding the wagon.

If you ask me, it's brilliant marketing, at least for hooking the enthusiast crowd - now whether or not Joe-on-the-Street knows anything about the Envy 14 is another question... Maybe they don't want him to know, though - keep the aura of exclusivity to keep hooking people like us into future iterations of the line.

    1. Unconfirmed that it's NOT a slice battery. Disinformation/misinformation by HP phone reps does not equal "lie."

    2. A video taken more than a month before launch? Consider that as preliminary expectations.

It was $100 more with the Radiance screen as standard at launch.

    Those tricksy HP hobbitses.

Anyway, everyone loves a proper rant. So you know, rant proper. ;)

Definition of lying: to create a false or misleading impression
pretty sure thats what misinformation means.

I agree that the radience screen is worth it. Just the principal of them misleading consumers over and over.

Ordered :) Thanks for all the info in this thread.

Hopefully this will work out better than the 3 dell studio's I've been through in as many months.

Had some trouble ordering. Identity protection kicked in on my card. Apparently amex thought I shouldn't be buying a laptop... I'm glad that happened though, HP CSR gave me a $75 credit when I called them to clear things up.

Got a build date of July 12th. Now I just need to keep myself from looking at SSDs...

Lying denotes intent to deceive. Now they may have intentionally distorted information, but more than likely, those demoing the product a month before release did not have full information about some of these details.

Oh I'm pretty sure they had intent to deceive. The only thing that keeps this from being criminally liable is the fact that a product had not officially been released yet. Its just a sneaky loophole that allows manufacturers to false advertise products.

I don't know about that. Though this incident probably isn't a rare one, I think it'd be best to give it a rest and use some common sense by looking at launch specs instead of reminiscing over pre-launch ads. A lot does change over time during the pre and post-production phases. Ask any car company or Boeing. Their initial design schematics are almost always much better-looking and different from what you see at the dealership one year later.

There's that to consider. Amazon.com's return policy's kind of stringent. Even if Envy 17like flaws found on the Envy 14 might make my purchase eligible for a return for Amazon, there's a sense of peace of mind from HP's 21-day no questions asked return policy. I've argued with CSRs before, so I'd rather not have to do so again.

I talked to an HP sales rep - the $200 battery option is the slice. Also it weights an enormous 3 pounds so with slice weight is 8.25 pounds approx.

Called about the battery concerns - rep didn't know anything about it, had no clue even when I compared the Envy 14's (theoretical) slice to the slice on the 13 and 15. Ended up giving me $100 off to prevent cancellation and reorder. If it's not the slice, I'll still be a bit peeved, but at least I'll have a secondary battery of some kind or another.

I decided not to mention the Amazon config - double-dipping seems somewhat risky and tactless, especially when you're calling from Skype and getting rather poor call quality so the rep feels like she's speaking to the Burger King drive through.

I'm liking how peeps is getting money back from HP just from calling with "concerns" or the "threat of cancellation." There's a part of me that wants to put that on the first post but well, you know...

It's not exactly ethical all things considered.

Does anyone know if the Envy 14 will be able to accomodate 2 1.8" SSDs like the envy 15? Maybe with a bracket swap?
Or will the mobo for sure have no way of connecting 2 hard drives?

    Thanks. Educated guesses are appreciated.

To be fair, if a well-informed rep told me it definitely wasn't the slice (instead of not having a clue, and even being incapable of pronouncing 'polymer' correctly), I would probably have reordered without it, and if they had told me it was the slice, I would have kept it, though I probably would have wanted to get some money back on the order anyway as a sort of price match to the Amazon model, which I would have gone for had I known I could get better specs for the same price minus tax, assuming the top part that says Radiance is correct and not the bottom which claims 1366x768.

As it is, I consider it a $100 bet that I'm right and she's either inept or just very poorly-informed.

I would have to disagree with the ethicalness (or lack thereof) of HP offering someone a credit when they call to cancel their order. If you legitimately want to change/cancel your order and it's worth the cash to HP to not cancel it, then what makes it unethical to accept their credit?

It probably costs HP a lot more than the credit they are offering you in lost time if you cancel an order. Then they have to unbuild whatever they've already built, or if the cancellation doesn't go through, then they will have to RMA your first build and build you another one. Honestly, you are probably doing them a favor by just taking the money and not cancelling your order.

I do agree that if you were just looking for another $100 off and didn't actually have any legitimate concerns about the configuration you ordered, then using it like a coupon is probably on the side of abuse and therefore a bit unethical. Then again, it's HPs prerogative to offer you the credit in the first place, so those people who were just trying to use it as a coupon or whatever might just wind up with no credit and a cancelled order instead :p

don't want to be pessimistic, but the rep may have done a search, yielded no results, so he decided to do a search using fewer digits. he then came to the envy 14 which he assumed was what you were referring to. (but u were actually referring to amazon's special envy 14 model)

Regardless of the HP sales reps and their apparent ineptness, I would be willing to bet anyone that the $200 option is absolutely, unquestionably the slice. Evidence? Just look at how HP has worded their laptop battery options on other models - they never mention "slice."

This is from the ENVY 17 configuration options, which we can all definitively confirm is the "slice" option:

"One 6 Cell (standard) and One 9 Cell (over-sized) Lithium Ion Battery"

On the other hand, this is the phrasing of the $200 option for the ENVY 14:

    "One 8 Cell Lithium Ion (standard) +One 6-Cell Extended-Life Lithium-Ion Polymer Battery (over-sized)"

In both cases, they are Li-On batteries (although the E14 is listed as polymer), and both are listed as "(over-sized)," not "slim-fit" as in the E15 listing. My guess as to why the E14 is a 6 cell and the E17 a 9 cell are simply due to the capacity given the dimensions of each battery (the base of the E17 has a greater surface area than the base of the E14).

In any case, I wouldn't think twice about this battery not being the slice - its going to be the slice, it is the slice, I don't care what the HP reps say. :D

...Just my 2 cents though - There's the chance I could be wrong, but I don't see how, haha.

Oh no, I'm not having a problem with that. Hey, not for nothing mate, I've been the beneficiary of HP's "bribes" to keep me as a customer on a number of occasions.

LOL. That would be a trip. But this is what I mean by not exactly ethical. The potential for abuse and the prescription outlined in "how to's" which facilitates.

HP will probably stop doing it if it becomes an issue. Or change it up so that they start offering coupons or store credits for subsequent purchases.

Anyway, I realize "times is tight" and there was an expectation that this unit was going to be more affordable. That's why I like that HP is refunding consumers.

I really hope that this unit doesn't have the quality control and heat issues the 15 and 17 have.

    From the Envy 13 and 15 CTO's:

The "additional optional slice battery..." parts are in smaller font directly beneath the main option.

I wasn't even aware the 17 had a slice - I only looked at its CTO page and it's so different from the 13 and 15 pages that I assumed the 9-cell was a typical oversized battery.
