4GB is heaps unless you plan on running a Virtual machine / Run more then 2 or 3 demanding programs at once.
6GB even on a desktop machine is very difficult to use just with games and normal programs, i wouldn't bother really.
-
and windows 8 comes out in like 2013, right?
unless itunes or chorme becomes twice as bloated...
hm, i guess my question is really how many more years until 6gb is the standard -
Wow...really? I wouldn't worry about Windows 8 if I were you.
-
Agreed, I have 6GB on a desktop machine and even with virtual machines and IDEs I don't use anywhere near that much. But I'm still glad I got it because I bought the extra 4GB when prices were at their lowest, and now DDR2 prices have doubled since then. 4GB is very likely going to be more than enough for most users for some time.
-
curiosity more than anything, i dont see myself holding on to the 14 for more than 2 years tops
-
Windows 8 comes out at the end of next year.
-
google says 2012...i'm guessing before the world ends.
-
Is there any advantage at all to getting 6 or 8 gigabytes over 4?
-
haha didn't you kind of already answer your own question? at least in terms of what's different about the 2 laptops. envy 14 has the better screen, (supposedly) better build quality and materials, is smaller/thinner. better is probably subjective though so people who don't care about that stuff (thin/light, all metal, nice screen) would obviously go for the dv6t. i mean part of the reason i haven't bought thedv6t se is because it looks so clunky and thick and i don't really want to haul it around. it sounds kind of dumb but there you have it :/.
-
Ok I played with the envy 15 and noticed it has little cut out rubber bumpers on the edge of the screen to stop it from htting the keyboard.
I played with the envy 17 and noticed it has an ALL around rubber bumper on the screen to stop it from hitting the keyboard, however, they stick out A LOT.
Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be or not, but is the envy 14 coming out the same way? It's really ugly and annoying. -
2012 the new windows server comes out, 8 should follow...
-
You must be earning a lot of money.
-
Even if windows 8 comes out in 2012, you wont wanna get it til 2013, once the first service pack comes out and fixes the bugs. I'm still using vista and I am loving it.
My new Envy will be my first windows 7 machine, and I'm looking forward to it. -
Hey everyone. I figured that after following the last 200 pages of this thread, it'd be a little weird to continue without an account, so here it is.
I'm currently waiting on my Envy 14 with the i5-520m, 4gb ram, and 256gb ssd drive. I returned my Envy 13 to get this. The Envy 13 was a great laptop, but was way overpriced compared to what the Envy 14 offers.
The Envy 14 and 17 have a similar screen bumper design to the MBPs, but yes, they are a bit bulkier. I actually like the bumpers being on the screen itself rather than on the palm rests. My Envy 13 would always get gross marks on it's glorious/precious glass screen from the bumpers whenever I closed it. -
You may be using vista and loving it but loads have moved on to Win 7 ages ago and are loving it even more.
-
I'm sure there are a few goodies to be found in Win7 that can't be found with Vista. But I personally couldn't find anything significant enough to warrant an upgrade. I'm on a Vista machine and have experienced no problems whatsoever.
-
IMO, vista suckss. this will be my first win 7 and it says ship date july 7th, i really hope that doesnt changee
-
really? as someone who liked vista and never really complained about it (i found it a welcomed upgrade from xp, despite the resources it needed), 7 is w world of change for the better and i wouldn't go back for a second
its my favorite OS since '98 -
$500ish/yr is a lot of money for a notebook? people spend more on gym memberships, nevermind cellphone contracts
and subtract the resale value on ebay in couple years when i want to get whats new...we aren't talking big money here -
Good news, everyone! I just recieved my UPS tracking number for my E14. According to the UPS tracking, the package is supposed to be delivered by today!
Unfortunally, nobody's home until 3pm. So I hope they arrive late. Otherwise I will pick it up directly at the UPS base when it returns from an unsuccessful delivery.
If everything goes well, you guys have a few first impressions in about 12 hours (it's 9:30am local time) and a more detailed review by tomorrow. -
nice!!! be critical!
-
Are you really only getting the Envy 14 for $1,000? Also, just how much do you expect to sell it for?
Also, you're making a complete apples and oranges comparison. Cellphone contracts are a different animal from premium notebooks. They're virtually a necessity if you're over 18 and live in civilization. The minimum for a 2-year contract in America is probably around $35/month. Of course, if you're like me, you can just go off of prepaid minutes and pay a lot less. Either way, you don't compromise on cellphone contracts. The exception may be smartphone plans, but even then, smartphones are also supplanting the role of regular cellphones as a necessity. You get a built-in GPS which some studies show cuts gas by 20%. You get an internet productivity device that allows you to do so much more while away from home and your laptop.
Arguing that because people pay a premium for phone plans it's fine to spend the equivalent on a diamond ring to celebrate a 10 year alcohol sobriety anniversary is kind of what you're doing. The same goes with car gas. Only problem is car gas and phone bills are (again) stuff Californians as a group can't skimp on. We bundle them with our electric and water bills. Spending $5,000 on a diamond ring for some of us middle class folks probably isn't the most prudent way to spend what should be retirement savings.
With laptops, the cheapest can go to as low as $300, and in the case with the 14, there's a lot of room for price fluctuation. Maybe I'm just being too serious. But I'm planning to keep my rig for at least 3-4 years if not even more.
Oh, and I don't pay more than $300 for gym membership. I've jumped on Costco's $300/2 year deals on and off. Anyone who pays more than $500/month on membership in America is doing it wrong. -
I liked vista too, on every machine that had at least 3,2 gig of ram, mainly because I never had a BSOD or anything equivalent on it.
-
Windows Vista was great... AFTER SP1 came out...and AFTER hardware makers finally got some real drivers for the OS out to consumers. And Vista became nearly as good as Windows 7 after SP2 dropped.
-
Toshiba supplied at least one model of HDD, you can clearly see it in the slashgear youtube video @ 3:58, and based on the way he is tossing the laptop around so carelessly with it turned on I can deduce that its an SSD.

???Questions???
Can anyone who had a previous envy tell me how the BIOS was? Are there going to be any options at all for overclocking the CPU?
In pictures of the e14 on the front of it right between the beats speakers you can see a rectangular shaped cutout that could be a button, anybody know what it is?
Flickr Photo Download: HP Envy 14, front open on white
I don't think it is a latch to open the screen, because i think they just have magnets holding the lid down, so what can it be hmmmm -
I'm not arguing that one's better than another--in fact, I agree that 7 offers slightly better value over Vista in terms of features all other things equal.
I just couldn't convince myself to pay the upgrade price for my Asus. When you apply a few tweaks and disable UAC, Vista runs snappily on any modern machine. Software incompatibilities are few and far between. But beyond all that, I just never bought into the hype. Win7, like it or not, is just a retweaked, revised, and thus slightly warmed over version of Vista. I've heard on several occasions that Win7 actually incorporates most of Vista's code and adds a few of its own in the form of features such as snap, shake, and dock. It's essentially at its core just an improved derivative. -
I'm dying to know what the super secret button does on the front, plz tell me! Does it dispense a cold beer when you push it or what?
-
It calls a magical unicorn that delivers your favourite Pizza right to your doorstep.
*it's magic*
( stolen from Mr Mosspuppet) -
its a card reader i believe
-
The card reader is also visible in the photo.
It's the slot on the right side of the front.
But what may that thing in the middle of the front be?
( other than a unicorncaller
)
-
ah yes, missed that lol. Well i WISH it were a button to change the color of the backlit keyboard. i would loooove to have a blue backlit keyboard on this thing!
-
We will^^
I just got of the phone with HP Shipping Center and they confirmed that the Envy 14 are now in stock and are being prepared for shipment.
I should be able to find out my UPS tracking number through HP Store later today.
Who will get it first then? -
Question: Will the envy14 be able to use two external monitors, as well as the laptops display all at the same time?
-
When can we see Envy 14 in stock at Amazon ? Anyone ? I really want to preorder it from amazon, but I don't want to wait till like august.
-
The more reviews, the better.
I've done my fill of apartment research for now. *Yawn*
Bedtime. -
We're not Amazon employees. Only they know at this point.
-
I actually have heard a rumor that there might be a way to run more monitors from the USB ports, that would give you the possibility to do eyefinity like the e17.
-
It seems so! I read a review of an display port to DVI adapter on amazon, where the author wrote he used it to connect 2 monitors to his HP laptop: one via hdmi and the other one via DVI. Should apply to the E14, too, shouldn't it?
-
I don't see why not. Arg...2:07am. Need to wake up for appointment with doc.
-
You can run lots of monitors even off of a basic laptop. My mom runs 2 externals off of her cheap dell laptop, so that she has 3 displays total. the key is a usb to vga adapter. I could always get one of those for my envy, but I was just wondering if I could use the hdmi + display port at the same time, and still be able to use the laptops display
-
That's what ati eyeinfinity is for.
-
yea except the e14 doesnt have eyeinfinity, its only one th 17, right?
-
I'm surprised by the number of people going to the gym. I didn't practice any sport besides bedroom sports since I was out of highschool. I just watch what I'm eating and It seems fine so far. Been 10 years I'm stuck at 60kgs
Sorry for the out of topic ^^
Erm, yea only 17 is branded as eye infinity with 3 monitors.
But since ATI catalysts from years and years ago you could already hook up two screens and put your laptop's one between them provided you had enough vga/dvi outputs. So at least you can have 3 desktop space on the envy 14, up to 4 on the envy 17. That said I don't know if we will be able to play games on multiple screens (eye infinity supported games). Someone will have to go take a peek at the ATI driver config to see if theres anywhere an eye infinity tab or such thing on the envy 14.
The only thing that will suck for sure is that you'll need to be on discrete graphics to use the hdmi port, it was this way on my old amilo xi 3650 which had a similar total on / off switching graphic setup (it was nvidia tho dunno about the ati one) -
It has Eyefinity, just the dedicated ports are limited to two external monitors at the same time...!
-
I believe the graphics card is limited to 6 monitors (including the radiance screen) meaning the mini displayport, hdmi, and all three usb ports can be used at once with one monitor each.
-
Fitness isn't just about the way yo look and/or what you weigh but about what your body can do. Furthermore, people are all built differently.
Now about that Envy 14. I don't want one but am certainly looking forward to the reports/reviews. -
Hoooray
I just recieved my Envy 14. Its still in the package and black shrinkwrap and looks all nice and intact! Interestingly the label quotes a 640GB HDD, not the 500GB I ordered, but I will find out soon... -
REVIEW please ! Heat, noise, and battery life !!!!!!
Other things can wait
Thank you ! -
Mine arrived at home, too. Unfortunally, I am still at work but I will post my review in a couple of hours (~7h).
-
Finally people are receiving their Envy's. This is great. Hope we get some willing reviewers.
