I am stuck between choosing the Envy 14 , Asus UL80JT, or Asus U43JC... but I'll wait a few weeks for the reviews to come out since I am not in too much of a rush for a laptop yet.
Does anybody know how many megapixels the webcam has? I tried searching it up but I can't.
-
What about navigating around with your middle finger and clicking with your pointer. Thats what i've always done.
-
so far it looks like the envy is turning out to be what we expected.
-
So battery life seems to be around 4 hrs with wifi/web/email type usage. This is about half of what HP had stated.
Will it go up as the battery gets charged a few more times? Has anyone in Germany ordered the slice?
Be interesting to see what real world battery life is with the slice attached and how much it deviates from HP's stated 14 hrs. And the weight too - if it really is 3 pounds. -
I don't have an envy even ordered yet
but from experience with synaptics touchpads and from hearing about the envy's clickpad: it should be fine as long as you don't slide your pointer finger around. (Though if you do, it sounds like you can turn the buttons into a areas where the touchpad doesn't register movements) -
the hp envy 14 looks good so far though i am still a bit worried about the battery life, noise and heat, as well as the slice battery (if that even is the slice battery available) allegedly weighing 3 pounds.
-
the slice weighs 1.5 lbs not 3
-
I emailed one of the head honchos at HP today and told him how everyone was ticked off because the envy14 isnt on the July 4th sale, with no good coupons for it, and everything else. I took him to task because they are marketing this laptop as "sanely priced luxury" but a core i3 is not luxury, and $200 for a slice battery is not sane, and because they lowered the base spec at the same time as raising the price... still waiting to hear back from him.
-
Where did you get this number? When i asked HP sales dude he said it weighed 3 pounds. Did you or someone else find out differently?
-
This is so sad. I don't care about battery life even, just heat and noise.
So far the heat looks like its going to make the envy 14 not a good buy :/
Noise, I've never even considered... crap...
Could somebody please & thank you post laptop thermals from some where where it isn't super hot? -
Give the device some time to breakin before complaining about heat guys. The thermal paste needs to set.
-
Ok so its 45 to 50C for idle, and under load the temps are only going to go up 25 to 30C, so its well within the specifications and your components are not going to overheat. Why do you think its a problem?
-
This is not the same switchable graphics technology as NVIDIA Optimus (switching graphics automatically depending on the application).
This is simple switchable graphics technology. It will use the HD 5650 when plugged in, Intel GMA with battery, and you can switch graphics manually (plugged in/battery). -
That will drop only a few degrees at best. Maybe they use crappy thermal paste though. I'm sure someone will take it apart and put some IC Diamond or AS5 and see if there's a difference. I might if it shows a decent improvement.
Even if it's 85F / 30C where this guy lives if your temp is 75F / 24C, it might only drop 2-3C. Of course every 1C helps! -
The problem is people expecting 30°C idle when the ambient temperature is 30-35°C
:/ Seriously guys, stop expecting it to be a fridge on cpu+gpu load with a dual core and sub high end graphic card... all into a tiny 14"
If you're waiting for such a laptop before buying, other than ultra low voltage processor versions (also cuts cpu perf by two) or sandy bridge, that's just plain delusional. -
My warranty arrived in the mail today
yay ^.^ ill umm, post a review soon...
-
QFT..honestly these temps arent even bad lol..I feel better actually seeing them. I was worried it would be like the envy 17, definitely not the case at all. btw <3 germans
-
In b4 i7 based envy 14 are at 60°C iddle.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah I mean my computer idles around 50 in florida.
if this thing idles at 40, that is one nice improvement. -
I am not sure what incentive HP would have to put the Envy 14 on sale considering the current demand.
As for the Amazon orders, I would expect to wait an extra couple of weeks versus a direct order from HP. They will submit in batches to HP production as the orders roll in. I think it was taking about that timeframe versus direct orders for the Envy 17. There was too much uncertainty with the Amazon deal with regard to the screen size and fulfillment which is why I canceled and placed a direct order.
All of the news so far looks good. It is way too early for results on battery life, but everything else looks great. Now, the hard part is waiting for the dang thing to be delivered.
I do have one open question, are there two physical SODIMMs for the 6 GB configuration? Or, is the first 4 GB a soldered in item? I bought two of these with 6 GB and it would be nice to up one to 8 GB and the other to 4 GB. I assume they are both loose since you can order a 4 GB version with two DIMMs or one, but it is nice to have validation
-
those temps arent bad guys. I do wanna see the temps of the 5650, at idle and while gaming, when one of you super awesome owners get a chance =)
-
All I want to know is if the laptop has the potential to burn you or make having it in your lap uncomfortable at times. (à la Macbook Pro 13.3" Unibody)
-
would the i5-450 be cooler than the i5-520? i still cant decide between the two...
-
How do the palm rests feel after an hour or so of surfing the web and other things?
-
OK, I can't stand it. The unboxing pictures have done me in, I'm ordering tonight, rebate or not.
-
lol
must...hold...out...just...a little...longer -
I feel like I'm one of the only people who has been waiting since the start of the Availabilty thread and hasn't given in yet. Wow
-
I've been following since the beginning as well. I just don't post. My decision is easily influenced. I've been following laptops on this website for over a year, waiting for the right one haha. -
I am watching a video on full brightness on my dads dv5t with an i3-350M and it is completely cool to the touch not warm at all.
Core #0- 37 C max
Core #2- 38 C max -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
The screen looks fantastic, even in the pictures. I wonder what is up with HWMonitor and the big difference in core temps, though? My dm4t had the same problem.
Pics look great, btw. +rep -
At idle in a 75 F room the i3-350m dv5t is 30 C..so I would say that the E14 cooling system is pretty nice..
-
I am still waiting and was lurking during the availability thread, zeth is still waiting too. I want to see how good the battery life is with a 720qm compared to a 450M or 520M before I order, among other things. And I might just keep waiting until they fix the prices to fall into line with "sanely priced luxury".
-
yeah seriously idle 40C does not look like theres a heating problems, where did this noise thing come from? the dude who has the laptop said the fans are barely audible..like most laptops probably better than most considering it has 2 FANS to help with heat. Honestly out of the 3 listed recently the only problem is the supposed 7 hour battery life even on integrated graphics. Hopefully the thing isnt calibrated yet and its at least 5 hours.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
hell even if it's 4 hours I'll be happy. (hello 1.5 to now 1 hour asus G1. you and your battery that's got 60+% wear)
-
erathostenes - Can you run 2 tests on the Envy 14? I would like to see the difference in temperatures between the Envy 14 and my TimelineX 4820TG.
Here are the temperatures I got for the 4820TG.
Ran Prime95 with torture settings (In-place large FFTs (maximum heat, power consumption, some RAM tested) with 4 threads) for about 15 minutes to stress the Core i3.
Ran the entire 3DMark06 benchmark to stress the HD 5650.
Check the maximum temperature values.

This is the internet, people like to blow things way out of proportion. Everyone needs to keep in mind we've only heard things from two people who've only had their laptops for less than a day. Lets give it some time before we all start spreading rumors.
-
4 hours would be pretty good if they didn't say it was going to get 8
-
a sales agent told me it could go up to 20 with just the 8 cell
hell, they are worse than dell -
and apple says theyre going to get 8-9 when you can squeeze out 5 or 6. all manufacturers exaggerate battery and yes i know it sucks lol what i do is when i see advertised battery life i take off 3-4 hours and thats usually more on par with real world battery haha. ill bet you at like 25-30% brightness and the integrated gpu with all wireless except wifi off you can get a good 5 hours out of a full charge, as long as you dont have i7.
edit: and bucknasty, thats just inexcusable haha 20... thats like getting slapped in the face what do they think were that stupid? why cant companies hire sales reps who actually know what theyre talking about.
wed all make much better sales reps haha -
you may not be able to acurrately compare cause you have an i3 and I dont think he does, I remember him getting a i5 -
its like car shopping after you've done all the research you can. you often know more than the salesman.
sure you can get a supercharged v8 in a prius... -
Which sounds about right, as I'm sure they measured in max power savings mode (wifi, Bluetooth, and other devices all off, screen brightness minimized). It's actually useful info: plenty of times when I'm on battery, all I need open is a simple text editor to write or take notes with.
-
I know. I was just curious on how hot his Core i5 gets in the Envy 14. There is no Core i5 model of the 4820TG in the US for me to buy. So, I went with the Core i3 model. I'm still happy with it.
-
Has it been confirmed that the 160GB SSD is indeed an Intel drive?
-
OK heres a recap since nobody has been paying attention...
battery: its already been stated more than once, the battery meter is not yet calibrated, ignore the readings you saw. it will be a day or 2 until he can test the battery properly.
temps: the temperature readings are fine, these temps are fine for a 30c ambient room. if you were an overclocker you would know how this works and what is good and what is bad and how much is too much...
noise: its got 2 exhaust fans, this means they can run at a lower RPM than a single fan would so it will be quieter. he already stated that he could barely hear the machine as it idled, he did not stress test it or anything yet to see how loud the fan gets at load. -
Haha, u you are not alone. I just replaced the backlight lamp and inverter on my aging dell inspiron 6000 to let it last a bit longer. But I somehow damaged the board and it's stuck on 100% brightness.
-
hahahah soo true, sometimes i feel like reprimanding these salesman...
-
The temperatures I saw before was when he was using the battery and the integrated Intel GMA.
I want to see how hot the Envy 14 gets with the tests, while it is plugged in and using the HD 5650.
Even my 4820TG is cool when it is on battery. It's known to be hot under stress. -
Wow I didnt even know he was in a 30C room..those readings are great then lol. I get 40C average playing a movie on youtube max brightness on a i3-350M in a 75F room. His room is 10 degrees warmer than mine with an i5. Palm rests are still not even warm.
-
ok and one more question guys,
id feel really comfortable getting the nice 160gb intel ssd cause we all know theyre about as reliable an ssd as they come. but i consistently have around 200gigs of space used up in my computers and id really like the 256gb ssd.
price isnt a factor but i just wish i could know that the 256gb is reliable.
i mean i could just drop the ball and get the crucial real c300 $700 (i have a 128gb in my desktop and its been great) but i dont wanna just waste the 150 bucks for no reason if they are in fact supplying me with a quality ssd like the new sammys or the crucial itself.
