    1st one posted earlier
Just called Hp and mentioned that I could get a better configuration (not mentioning if it has a lower resolution screen because cdw.com HP NV14-1010NR I5-450M 500GB 6GB W7P and other Notebook Computers at CDW.com does not specify) for less than what i payed and they said they would do a price match if you customized to the same configuration, so they might give you with 450 i5, 6GB Ram and 500GB HDD for $1170. But since i didnt have the same configuration they offered me $50 and i just took that because its less of a hassle. So if you bought an envy here is a chance to knock of $50 or get a cheap configuration.

I did use my student discount so they will still give $50 if you used one

and the other would be that they dropped the price of the i5 450m by $25 so i called about that.

How many fans does that acer use?

As to screen size/brightness, for competing 14 inch models, these are 14.1, not 14.5 no? Extra screen area would seem to draw slightly more power, that coupled with a 350 nit brightness level vs a ~200 nit brightness level on most displays. As to screen draw in general vs screen size/resolution... wouldn't screen power draw be more a function of screen area + brightness vs screen resolution? the sony vaio z may have high res displays, but what about the backlights? 13" screen areas ought to need less backlight than 14.5" screen areas.

mx11 battery comparisons = useless, they use low voltage chips.

What is to stop some third party, or hp in the future from releasing a slim fit battery that fits the envy 14 with a higher watt/hour rating?

Just trying to get more apples to apples analysis here guys, some of the arguments and comparisons are sloppily constructed.

M645 has core i5 and 14 inch screen. Also has 7200 rpm HD.

Is the whole point of a 14 inch laptop to be mobile when needed and cut the cord so to speak. With 3.5 to 4 hrs mobility is going to kind of hard. And to get goo battery life requires a 200 dollar 1.5 pound add on battery bumping total weight to nearly 7 pounds. Not very mobile. The battery life is the deal breaker for me. I was actually going to return my M645 to BB and get the Envy 14 but not now with the 4 hrs battery life - unless there is a huge price break and that makes adding on the slice more pocket book friendly.

uh, yes I read what you wrote. I suggested that people were waiting for the sale tomorrow (thus no reason to post yet) and that as the only 2 owners are not posting right now, and no one else will get an Envy for a while, there is little interest in posting.

    Agreed completely.
    900p or higher res. (I'm fine with 100% text on a tiny 1080p :D )
And replying to the n82/asus comments; I love asus products, but the only 900p+ screens they have are on large, bulky plastic laptops. They need to make an Envy/MBP competitor.

So if their built in China or Shanghai, do they have the same 5-day work week?

Let me put it another way-if my estimated build date is July 8th, I would receive my Envy by (or before?) July 15th, 16th, or 19th?

ugh now that everyones posting up these 3.5 hour battery lives im thinking about getting the vaio z instead.
im mainly getting the envy for its uniform thickness, aluminum body, and improved graphics card as it was going to be a 2100 dollar laptop regardless due to the custom upgrade of an ocz vertex 2 240gb ssd and 8gb corsair ram and the i5 520m

do you guys think i should get a z instead if money isnt a factor?
i really just want the best overall thin and light laptop money can buy and i do participate in some gaming.

    laptops for college btw.

Just ordered mine, base except for i5-450 and an Intel x25M 160 GB. So looking forward to it. My last (now dead) laptop was a hp dv6223 with an AMD Turion 2 GHz single core, 1 GB RAM and a geforce go 6150 GPU, in the end about 20 minutes of battery life. Even if battery life is about 3.5 hours, that's still going to be great for me. Should be even snappier than my desktop, now, for anything but gaming :D

Do anyone of you know if there's any way to use bundled software on a different PC, or sell it? The Norton subscription, etc.?

To some extent it is true. Although I wouldn't give too much credit to a reading of wattage on the first battery draw, with a battery meter still adjusting.

Yes, that should be possible. My 4820TG can idle for around 9 hours at 30 percent brightness and max battery mode (meaning the screen will automatically shutdown too). The Envy 14 isn't too different from the 4820TG in terms of spec.

To everyone complaining about battery life and trying to understand why HP would opt for styling over a enlarged battery , can you blame them? a better looking machine is clearly going to outsell one with somewhat improved battery life every time. How many apple customers do you think weigh their machine's battery life over its aesthetics? And also I have to ask how often you push your laptop battery until it's dead. I know I rarely do. I have battery anxiety with my HP tx2 and even my netbook but they rarely actually run out of charge.

Also will CPU stop using ddr3 feature as most apps require less than 4gb of memory thus CPU tends to use just one stick of ram if it was 4gbX2?? Or am I completely wrong and ddr3 allows for usage of both sticks of 4gb for simple apps?

    Ditto, brutha.

HP's design and engineering departments most definitely had to draw that crucial compromise between form factor and function. People rage at Macbooks just because they can't swap out batteries, so they opt for a PC that's 2-3 pounds heavier and gets far fewer hours of total life. 90%+ probably never order a new batteries since they're expensive!

Bottom line: People will never be satisfied. I have to give HP props for accommodating the mobile road warriors with a battery slice though where I'm going, I'm probably going to find an outlet and a coffeeshop with a hotspot every few blocks.

Crappy battery life cause while surfing = intel turbo boost (because it overclocks like mad for stupid flash banners), disable it in bios and enjoy 5 hours+
... seriously try it, also customize the energy saving profile to disable unused usb, maximum saving on pci e link and maximum saving on everything (including wifi & cooling system) except cpu power (keep it at 100% max). Since hp didnt built in a custom profile including those savings like asus for example, do it yourself.

If it works you can thanks me by benching with cinebench r10 a 450m and give me some numbers :p

May use less power, reason being it won't need to spin up the HDD as much because more data will be cached.

I ordered on the 27th at 11. My ship date is July 7 with 5-7 days of shipping. Given how this is the week end (and assuming they work on the 5th in China) that gives them 3 days to finish up the first batch. I am doubting the ability of the product to arrive on time...

Why hasn't anyone configured their envy with an i7? I ordered mine last week with a i7-740, 4gig ram 1 dimm, and a 500gb hard drive. Are i7's really that unreliable and suck that much battery? I sure hope not...

DDR3 is the type of RAM and you can't turn it off. You get a slight performance advantage using two sticks of DDR/DDR2/DDR3 called dual channel. Think of it as RAID for memory chips.

Mainly battery life. With i5's integrated GPU you can get 4-5 hours general use. With quad core i7's they have no integrated GPU so its using the dedicated GPU, which means probably 2 hours of battery life with general use.

It helps to realize that many factories work through the weekend in China. I work at a school that's owned by a factory in Wuhan, China, and our factory definitely doesn't shut down for the weekend, even though the two-day weekend has become pretty standard here.

This a funny thread. First you guys went on for hundreds of posts about how the build quality will be crappy and the unit will overheat like the 15 and how the display can't be any good. Now that it looks like HP has built a nearly perfect notebook, it seems as people are looking for things to complain about. $25 on the proessor . Battery duration. This looks like a great notebook and HP is going to sell the crap out of it. :) Celebrate. :D

I get over 3 hours(barely) with my envy 15 with 16gb ram, 320gb ssd, and 820-i7. I would have to think that the envy 14 with a smaller screen, smaller gpu would get at least as much as my box.

::EDIT:: whoops, forgot to mention it was an envy 15.

15, as 17 only has two DIMMs.

My 15 with a 720 and mechanical storage got about an hour and a half on average. I'm not saying anyone is lying if they got twice that...just that it probably isn't the norm.

Haha. My two sources of concern were the misinformation on Amazon.com's website and youtube interviews and the back to school shopping season. Battery life is meh. I wasn't expecting HP to get too many hours from an i5-xxxM processor without any special software to pull off the kind of 8 hour battery life Apple gets on their Macs.
