im going away and need the envy 14 in my hands by july 30th, im waiting for some deal that beats the 10% student discount though.
Whats the latest i can order the envy with standard shipping and get it before the end of july?
-
Haha, I looked at it there too! (Then I spent too much money at Trader Joes).
I thought it was a pretty solid computer overall (especially for the price), but I was very unimpressed with the build quality in the screen. It felt very flimsy. I carry my computer back and forth from home to lab to classes, and I need something that can stand up to daily use. -
Hello,
Can I stack coupons?
Is the i520 better than the 450?
Is the battery life 7 hours? -
Just freakin' order it. You'll have to order within the next 2 weeks and if you think you're getting 20%+ off in that span you're lying to yourself.
-
Anyway, what's 25% over 10% ? 150 $ ? 200$ ? Thats a week worth of food & drinks... There's not that much to save.
-
hahaha...man...hilarious
-
I thought it was funny too, but kingcow was obviously joking around
-
Anyone got any recommendations for a pouch for the envy 14 ?
-
i know the chance of a good discount in the next week is next to none but my budget is 1000(without tax) and before release day i was convinced i was gonna make that. With an upgrade to the 450m and 4gb 1 DIMM ram, my total comes to $1057 with the student discount. i guess its close enough.
-
Good lord....HP! Just let the people release REVIEWS!
What's that for a kind of policy?! -
Just got back from camping for 3 days...and 102 new pages
I can NOT believe I just read them all xD
I'm wayyy to anxious about this computer
-
Eh I think it's good some points get reiterated throughout the thread simply because people aren't willing to spend the time searching for a needle in the haystack.
On the other hand, not repeating these very points will keep the size of the haystack smaller.
Anyway let's stop posting about posting and start talkin about this chill machine. The haystack is only growing
Does anyone know the manufacturers of the hard drives placed in these? Would love to check benchmarks to see if it's worth upgrading on the spot or simply buy one separately after market. -
There is a 'Search this thread' option.
-
Don't forget the pathetic 1280x800 resolution of the MBP 13". There are netbooks now with higher res screens.
-
Issues that concern me...
How are the graphics switched?
How well does multitouch scrolling work?
Any major design flaws? (heat)
Battery life with i3 and standard 8-cell? -
software; ai catalyst
depends on the synaptics driver; not as good as the MBP for sure.
none stated yet
unknown for now. -
Thank you for the prompt and thorough answer.
Just bought a MBP 13" for school....
I haven't touched it yet so I'm wondering if I should return it for an E14.
HMMMMMMMMMMMM........ -
So..I just gave in and ordered one. I told myself I was gonna wait but I just feel like no deals are going to come up, and if they do I can complain to HP on the phone and get some money back anyway.

I was debating between the 450 and 520 a lot, but decided to just go with the 520...I'm going to have this thing for a while and I feel like I should just go with the best dual core they offer. Plus there are no real benchmarks on the 450 so we don't really know how they compare.
Also just went with 2 2GB sticks because I don't know if I would really upgrade the ram in the future and it's faster in dual channel than 1 stick, and if I were to upgrade getting the same exact stick of ram might not be possible.
Estimated ship date:
July 14, 2010
Now for the wait

You'd get more power with the envy 14
but you'd get more portability with the MBP 13
also if you prefer windows 7, then the envy is the best choice -
i was looking into the MBP 13" too for college, until my friend, who got the MBP 13 a couple weeks back, told me to get the envy 14. (it's not like he didn't like his MBP) as lazy as i am, i didn't want to learn osx, and pirating windows (shhh don't tell haha) for dual boot would've been a real hassle.
so if you're a loyal windows kid the envy 14 might be a good idea.
but then again, you need to worry about a number of things....
search it up in this thread. someone covered the pros and cons of the mbp vs the e14 already. -
Yeah but that just makes too much sense.
... I completely forgot about that function. -
There, fixed it for ya'.
See here for the differences between copyrights, trademarks and patents.
Apologies for the thread hijack.... -
No way...you just ordered today (July 5th) and you have a ship date of the 14th???? I ordered on July 1, and my ship date is July 13th LAME HP!!
-
I know this has already been discussed but I keep going back and forth between 4GB and 6GB of RAM. On the one hand that $75 could go towards something more useful like a pair of headphones but the idea of not getting the 6GBs doesn't agree with my brain.
-
.____.
I ordered on the 2nd and have a build date of the 14th
sighhh -
lol well it said if you get one of the non SSD hard drives, it adds 1 day to the build date. That could be some of it. And who knows how accurate these things are anyway.
-
i check my order every hour on hp.com, and as of now i have no life until summer school starts (wooot! go anteaters!!)
BTW, Fedex is closed today..because of something called "post independence day" ive never head of that in my life, and i was born in the US. -
Well I ordered with the i5-520 and after finding this forum and reading about the different processors I realize i don't need to be spending the extra $100 dollars on that when i could be getting the 450. I figure i can spend that $100 on something like books or a sleeve for the laptop itself. Do you guys think i should just keep my order?
-
dont get six gigs they either solder the ram or use 4gb and 2gb and 2 and 2 or 4 and 4 is better for optimal dual channel speeds
-
As someone stated to me a while ago, it only makes 0%-5% difference if its in 1 dimension compared to 2 dimensions. Personally I went with 1 dimension because I know in about a year or so 4 GB RAM sticks will be a lot cheaper (as all things). Even though it won't make too much of a performance difference (considering 4 GB is already pretty darn fast), its just one of those things that makes you feel good. ~A fully upgraded product...although, I better get a SSD first.
-
Not exactly. We have two 13" MBPs in the house - a June '09 unit and May '10 unit. Neither one of them will last much longer than 5-6 hours when doing "typical" work and even less once you start playing DVDs or doing anything with Photoshop or content creation. And this is despite the larger battery in the May '10 MBP release.
I'm not an HP apologist (and in fact, have never been very happy with their consumer products) but making comparisons to Apple's market capitalization proves nothing. Apple's market cap is being driven by the iPhone and to some extent, the iPad. In actual unit numbers, Apple's laptop sales are a fraction of HP's.
I hope the Envy 14 does prove to be a serious challenger to the MacBook. However, HP is not executing very crisply on this release. For example, clueless CSRs, misinformation during prerelease and on the website, no trade mag reviews yet, etc.
I hope I'm wrong - I'm planning on taking the plunge and buying a 14 for my daughter - and possibly one for myself after we start seeing some professional reviews and more user experiences here on NBR. -
Yea, the performance increase in dual channel isn't that much, but it's best for dual channel if the RAM is the same exact model, and idk if I would be able to buy the same exact 4 GB stick that hp put in there. When I upgrade I'll just get 8GB of dual channel ram off newegg and know that the 2 sticks are going to be good together
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
It's a new holiday as of ..uh..this year.
everyone decided to take monday off since independence day was on a sunday -
hahahahahah ^^
-
Yeah that works too, compatibility will be a possible dilemma for us 1-dimension guys/gals
. Oh well, if I do have a problem like that, I'll do the same as you. Hopefully by then 8 GB will cost around $150-actually I think thats a little too ambitious?
-
SO...
Has the slice been confirmed to be a slice? Need to update the 1st post.
Also, any new coupon codes?
PM me of any changes.
Hope every one had a nice weekend. -
It's really a sad thing that you can't configure the device here in Germany.
Not even that, there is only this one pre configured notebook as offer...
I mean, come on. Atleast offer some bit more options!
I don't need the i5 520.
The i3 370 would be enough. The device wouldn't cost 1300€ and it would have a bit more battery life.
... -
I heard you get more performance with 2 identical sticks of ram...would this mean you would get a better performance from 4GB over 6GB?
-
Thank you erathostenes! I am curious about the Envy 14's ventilation system. I believe we understand that the 2 vents on back and right side are exhaust vents, and the bottom 3 perforations are for air intake. Are there any other obvious air intake spaces, or do we assume that air seeps in through the keyboard, construction seams and gaps, and beats speaker vents?
As discussed earlier, there was some confusion how the Envy 14 would perform on a lap or another type of softer surface. Just like its predecessor, the very 1st bit of information provided about the Envy 14 from the User Manual is contradictory to its function and stated name (See page 5.)!
Safety warning notice
WARNING! To reduce the possibility of heat-related injuries or of overheating the computer, do not
place the computer directly on your lap or obstruct the computer air vents. Use the computer only on a
hard, flat surface. Do not allow another hard surface, such as an adjoining optional printer, or a soft
surface, such as pillows or rugs or clothing, to block airflow. Also, do not allow the AC adapter to contact
the skin or a soft surface, such as pillows or rugs or clothing, during operation. The computer and the
AC adapter comply with the user-accessible surface temperature limits defined by the International
Standard for Safety of Information Technology Equipment (IEC 60950).
HP's own Envy website states "ENVY Laptops", so can you tell us if you can use this on your lap, bed, couch, or soft surface without the machine overheating and providing a safety risk?
What types of Temps can we expect while using this machine in a normal way? What are the temps when the bottom 3 intake vents are blocked, say like when you lay the laptop on a bed or couch?

I wonder if "typical" work is really so typical. For me, I'm getting a little north of 7:00 doing the usual light browsing, Office usage, PDF work, etc. on a June '09 15".
-
13'' != 15''
-
What does this mean?
I was about to delete this post but I was too intrigued. -
13" battery life isn't equal to 15" ? lol
-
13" is not equal to 15". In other words the poster responded to a post about 13" Macbook Pros with experience that relate to his 15" Macbook Pro. But obviously the experiences with two different laptops would differ.
-
Oh... derp.

:O POWER ABUSER!! lol

Agreed. Folks need to learn to lurk quietly and only post helpful or educational information.
I think we either need to start a new thread or do a quick rehash so folks stop cluttering up the thread with redundancies. But that's just my two cents. Still, regardless general shenanigans and all that, NBR is an awesome place to learn about laptops. I've gotten a lot out of just reading threads around here. There's so much to learn... -
Very true.
Tell your friends.
(Oh wait, how will he tell his friends if he's banned? Hmm...)
Kidding. -
Hope to see the config below shipping on 7th. A bit different from what others seem to be ordering. Work is buying this for me, so I am not hunting deals on this one(probably should be, but I'm not) and I am not too concerned about battery life. I will use the unit for shorter periods, jumping between a number of locations, but I need quite a bit of punch when I do use it. Will get a slice later if required.
Any thoughts are welcome, particularly on the processor choice.
