lmao my heart sunk.

After seeing Anand's MBP tests, my boyfriend ran some scripts both on his i5 MBP and on my i5 Envy 15. Firefox, with 3 tabs just going through the websites. Settings were default, screen brightness was around 30%.
MBP got over 8 hours, my Envy 15 barely got 3 hours.
The reason any battery comparisons or disappointments about potential lack of battery life on the Envy 14 only stems from HP., as HP stated the Envy 14 would get 7 hours battery life, so its only normal to potentially feel disappointed/scammed by HP. There will be a review that compares the i520 MBP to an i520 Envy 14. Apple claims 8 hours > HP claims 7 hours. The question is which company is more honest with this assessment? I'd be willing to make a nice wager that the MBP will trounce the Envy on battery life (and yes the Nvidia GPU in the MBP eats more battery than the Envy 14's ATI). Considering we've only got preliminary battery reports from 2 users, I hope we will see better battery life reviews, but as stated here over and over again, 3 additional hours dont just come from the nowhere.
Exactly. Rather than throwing arbitrary numbers around that all depend on particular use, its easier and possibly more thorough to reference Anandtech's post. MBP's do get 3 hours on some tasks, while getting 8 on others.
True, but it shows Apple is doing lots of things right. And since we're speaking of laptops, there is a reason HP chose to make a computer with a small form factor with nice materials just like Apple has been doing for years. One more thing, Mac's are the number 2 money earners for Apple.
Sure HP created a Premium brand out of nowhere, but its self evident that products that are designed and made in top form can easily be used as profit generators. HP would probably sell its left ... for margins like that!
There is a reason why HP tried to make a better brand/image for itself, but it makes me wonder if the Envy 13 and Envy 15 were successful considering the very short life, and more importantly the price reductions for the subsequent generation of Envy's.... the 17 and 14. Successful product lines dont generally need discounting to grow, they continue with high prices and high profit margins so that more advanced design/technology/fabrication may be used in future products. HP does things that make you go hmmmm.
Quite the truth. Im hoping the Envy 14 will get over 5 hours battery life and still be made properly like the first 2 users have shown. If so, Im negotiating to trade my i5 Envy 15 for an i7 Envy 15 that will stay on plug (where its designed to be), while the Envy 14 gets me through my daily nomadic use.

Just saw this:
HP Envy 14T QUAD i7-720 14.5 ATI 5650, 4GB Mem on eBay.ca (item 140422372953 end time 30-Jul-10 02:21:02 EDT)
Says can make your own config and he will order for you. Not sure how solid it is, but the seller has 100% positive feedback. Seems like it could be an option for those out of the US who want to order one. -
yep thats the person i bought from. great that he/she ships worldwide.
-
So, no issues? You're happy with the purchase?
-
from the person? i would say yes. Seems cheaper then what HP charges. I wonder how they are making money.
-
I'm interested in the post I quoted because he was saying that he's getting several hours shy of what Apple quotes for the April 2010 13" MBP ("Up to 10 hours", which is backed up by Anandtech's review here), and I'm getting about what Apple quoted for the June 2009 15" MBP (something like 7-8 hours, iirc, also backed up on the graph in the above link) with what is presumably similar usage. I find that curious, that's all.
-
Cool.
Considering this as an option, now. -
What a beast! I wanted to get that processor with SSD but I can't afford it
-
Yeah, seems like he probably orders with a student discount, selling it at a regular price to the ebayer sans tax... not a bad service, I may do it myself...
-
I just configured the same laptop on HP and he's charging $30 more for the exact same configuration. You can say that he's losing money on tax, but more than likely, he's ordering from a tax exempt state, ie Montana? And in terms of shipping, he just has to pass on that fee to you, the buyer.

this looks like a gleat laptop

From looking around online, it seems viable. The Canadian prices already suck, and I don't expect them to get any better.
-
Yes. I am going to order from him my e14. Hope its going to be ok because theres no other way of me getting a customized envy in Australia cause aust is such a hole. And the envy 15 costs $2800 AUD which is ridiculous.
Going to get i5-450M, 4GB RAM, 160GB SSD. Which will come out to a total of $1800AUD for me
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
GL people ordering from that guy.
-
still no BCB.
... I hope they come out with a good coupon or BCB comes back soon!!!
-
I want to buy it from him. I live in Australia. Do you still get warranty on it if anything goes wrong or do you loose that?
-
1 year limited warranty. so idk what that covers.
-
Though I've bought and sold items on eBay, I'm personally a little more cautious when ordering that's $200 or more.
That 21-day return policy brings peace of mind that's difficult to quantify. -
If you still want to buy a configured e14, go here: HP Envy 14T QUAD i7-720 14.5 ATI 5650, 4GB Mem - eBay (item 140422372953 end time Jul-29-10 23:21:02 PDT) The guy that is selling the laptops said he can order any configured laptop you want from HP.com -
Your post made me wonder how HP is making money from the Envy line.
Pure speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if the whole entire Envy Brand was a loss leader for HP. Obviously they want to capitalize on consumers who value and will pay for truly Premium designed and built products, so its a no-brainer for HP to take a loss for a while in the attempt to do something they have never done before.
The bigger question is how long will HP take a loss in the name of attempting to make better products that consumers with more discretion appeal to?
Another question is how long does it take for HP to make a laptop that can truly rival Apple in design, materials, fabrication methodology, and honest advertisement?
Will the Envy 14 get it all right? -
Oh damn. It seems as though you can combine cashbacks. If you combine all the cashbacks listed here, you can get up to 15%, which is better than student discount alone!
-
I mentioned this earlier
-
Has anyone who has the e14 had any problems with it? I'm still not sure if I should get it or not because I don't really need it that bad
-
Wow! How much did that run ya?
Does it come with an extra long cord LOL?
-
blizard.wizard Notebook Consultant
What cashbacks are there? I would really like to get that discount! -
Exactly...plus he might be a HP employee (assuming employees get discounts) or he might have just staked up some coupons
-
Both MBPs are used by my daughters for their middle school and high school work. In addition to running Apple's mail client, Safari and iTunes, both MPBs are running Windows (one is running Win7 and one Vista) under Fusion 3 and both run proprietary edu software that has to be connected to the cloud so disabling wireless is not an option. Granted, Fusion may not fall under the "typical" category with regards to power management but this is a very common usage scenario.
-
I ordered the base configuration from him for exactly $1099.99 (same as the HP website). He isn't be charging more.
If you don't mind what configuration did you order and what did he charge you? -
Still not clear where your estimates come from. Are you stating that the battery life estimates are when using Fusion 3 only? If so, sure 4-5 hours might be normal. If not, I can tell you personally that using iTunes, Safari, and a mail client should not drain a 10 hour battery in half unless your daughters are hunkered down on some truly extensive Flash and HTML5 sites! Maybe that can happen...
-
So you bought from him and paid him already correct. Have you received it yet?
-
How did you get 15% Off?
Can anyone verify if fatwallet cashback works with student discount? -
i didnt even bother checking prices, the i5 450m and 500gb HD was still a steal for 1.2k, and i would have gladly paid at least 1.4k to get this laptop with the same specs (mainly because theres no other way i can get it!)
i paid 1.3k overall (100$ shipping to Bermuda)
@sonny ; No, i havent received it yet. My guess is that it has to arrive there, then he/she sends it anywhere in the world really fast (i read the reviews) -
Yes - at pretty much any given time, Fusion 3 will be running - along with iTunes and Safari. Don't get me started on Flash. Both of them (and my wife) are big Farmville fans on Facebook. Kill me now.
-
Less than 2 days for hopeful shipping date !
-
Youtube... deezer... pretty much any entertainment website actually... even facebook is full of flash videos now, which is what youngsters are all about.
-
I ordered the following:
windows 7 home premium
i5-450m
4GB RAM
160GB SSD
And no extra battery
he charged the exact same price as hp so it sounds all good as long as it comes! -
No idea, but I used fatwallet when I ordered mine with the student discount. It's gonna be a long time before I see if it works
-
Just put in my order. Now the waiting begins.

Hi,
I have been reading this thread since it was around 200ish, i'm seriously considering getting the Ebay.ca since this is my only option to get the laptop here.
but I have a little request to erathostenes.
@erathostenes
I would like to test FFXIV benchmark with the Envy 14 if it's possible, because I'm planning to buy this laptop and play the game once its out.
and I would love to know the Benchmark that you would be getting;
Official Final Fantasy XIV Benchmark Website
Really appreciate it.
Thank you,
Xman -
Ahh, that makes more sense. What would we do without Farmville??? LOL.
Your getting them younins' on VM's quick! If used in a mobile fashion, do those VM's provide any benefits for they're daily uses, or do you have extremely tech savvy kiddo's?
Those whipper snappers... I grew up on a farm. No Farmville for me! They get to click enter and pause, I had to milk the cows at a.m.!
-
So do you email him with the specs u want or how do you do it?
-
Same here...I didn't even find it online any where else apart from the ebayer: opal cadet items - Get great deals on PC Laptops Netbooks, Laptop Notebook items on eBay.com!
-
My boyfriend just got home and I asked him to show me the battery life scripts he made, so I might test later for my own curiosities.
I wonder if the 2 Envy 14 owners have the capability to run battery tests?
Im also very curious about the effects of blocking the 3 air intake vents on the bottom in regard to battery life and heat issues?
The streets are empty out there, going long boarding now! -
Just reposting a coupon that may stack with the logic50 (50$) coupon for those who didn't see it.
Discount: $25 off your online order of $125 or more at the HP Home & Home Office Store.
Coupon Code: SVMB39487
Expires: 07/31/2010
Would make it a 75$ saving for those without academic discount. -
good then 'cause I'm sure he didn't charge higher
-
I give up. I can't keep up with this thread any more. I leave for a few hours and there's like 100 posts. My money for this beast will be available July 14... I just hope there's no major discount before then otherwise I'll have to pawn one of my kids for a week...
-
Hey folks,
I'm hoping to hear any comments from Envy owners on the quality of the keyboard. Squishy? Hard? Good? Fantastic? I'm 'this close' to pulling the trigger and ordering it, but not having great experiences with the island keyboards in the past, I'd like to know HP got it right.
Thanks!
JGE
P.S. Apologies in advance if I missed the post already. I'm trying to keep up, but dang if the job doesn't get tough at 300+ posts! -

Do you guys think it's stupid to order the 840QM in this thing? I'm kinda tempted to go fully loaded on everything. SSD and 750GB HDD.
