My mom's office has Dell Latitudes with 1440x768 in 14" - going from my desk's 20" 1680x1050 and lappy's 14" 1280x800 I was so jealous...
-
I have my doubts....I hope I am wrong as I have 2 day shipping and need it by the weekend.. it is an 'estimate' after all. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah got a bad feeling we're gonna feel the envy 17 delay.
-
Did the expected build date on the 17 change to reflect the delay?
-
Polymer batteries of that kind with buttons and leds indicating the charge state (like on macs) cost at least 50$ of production quality check and transportation fees imo.
-
Nobody has more power than 2.0... he rules the NBR universe!!!

I don't know what's worse: the answers she gave you or the fact that you believe the nonsense she gave you.
-
Is the HD5650 GDDR3 or DDR3? Can someone please post a picture of GPU-z?
-
What makes you say that? What was the reason for the delays on the 17?

Many People need the extra Encryption, and security features for business. Nothing is worse than finding out all of your customers credit card data is stolen, and you are responsible. -
I think it'll ship from Mississippi. I live in Jersey.
I'm gonna assume the worst: 7 business days to arrive from there.
Ahhh ships tomorrow :] -
Seems to be the common consensus that the screen is quite nice.
-
I thought that our Envy's are being produced in Shanghai???
-
they are the same thing. 'g' means graphics
-
The problem is, the 520m doesn't exclusively support encryption. It supports an instruction set that speeds up encryption. If we're talking an excel spreadsheet with a few hundred, maybe even a thousand or two credit card numbers, names, addresses etc I'd still think very hard before spending the extra money because we're likely talking fractions of a second difference still.
-
Yea, agreed. Almost 100% sure that the laptops will ship from Shanghai.
-
From a quick google search:
IIRC ggdr and ddr are different in a few ways that optimize performance for their intended tasks. I'd imagine that the graphics card uses gddr. -
Isn't there 270 MHz difference in top speed as well? Not a lot, but it's not nothing either. Has anyone benchmarked the two processors?
-
yes, ddr and gddr aren't exactly the same thing, but if a graphics card is listed with ddr3, it usually means that it is using gddr3.
gddr = graphics cards
ddr = ram
i felt that a layman's answer would suffice
-
You think they work over weekends? I feel like a total a-hole right now...but I really hope they do because that means that we might be able to get it shipped a couple days earlier!!
God...i feel like a saying that xD Damn Americans...we are too spoiled. -
Just did the first Battery Eater test:
- "reader modus"
- WLAN = ON
- Display ca. 60%
- standby at 10%: disabled
result: 4:10 hours
I don't know if there is optimisation potential with the energy settings.
now recharging -
Nope... GDDR3 has a different architecture compared to DDR3. I'm pretty sure GDDR3 is faster but more expensive than DDR3.
-
Wrong.
To quote Wikipedia (among other resources):
"Graphics Double Data Rate 3 is a graphics card-specific memory technology, designed by ATI Technologies with the collaboration of JEDEC.
It has much the same technological base as DDR2, but the power and heat dispersal requirements have been reduced somewhat, allowing for higher performance memory modules, and simplified cooling systems. GDDR3 is not related to the JEDEC DDR3 specification." -
i think you missed my last post
-
A while back in the thread we had a graph - the difference was more or less irrelevant...well <5% iirc except on the encryption-oriented tasks.
-
Right, it also depends on whether your software even supports AES-NI. If it doesn't, you won't see any benefit.
On the other hand, the i5-520m does have TXT, which means you're guaranteed to get a TPM (which you certainly want for BitLocker and many other FDE solutions). That's not to say that the Envy 14 with the i3 or i5-450m doesn't have a TPM (it very well could), but it's possible that it could be disabled in the BIOS or some BS like that, unless HP explicitly specifies that you'll get a TPM on i3/i5-450m models. -
Did you run it with seven on "Normal usage" battery profile ? Or "High performance" profile ? Or "Energy saving" profile ?
-
You're wrong on this count, as well. Lots of graphics cards are shipped with regular DDR memory to save on costs. Laptop manufacturers that use GDDR memory usually have more expensive machines with higher-end graphics subsystems. GDDR does not simply mean "regular memory, but for graphics".
-
ahh thanks alot for that .... i find that to be great in fact and seeing that the screen was at 60% and the WLAN was on ... it suggests more battery life wen just using the laptop for office programs
-
thanks, i bow down to the 5 people who corrected my ignorance
now back to the envy.... -
About 50% short of HP claim. What CPU do you have?
-
I used the "HP recommended" profile and just modified it that there is no shutdown at 10%.
Perhaps I try the standard Win7 "energy saving" with WLAN OFF next time. -
I think the HP claim can safely be attributed to a test performed with the Slice.
While I'm a bit disappointed by the misinformation, I'm at the same time satisfied with a ~4 hour battery life. -
Word. 'specially with 60% bright and WLAN - beats the 30 minutes my asus gets
-
Can you run the Final Fantasy XIV benchmark using the "low resolution" test?
-
Also with regards to the battery life test, isnt 60% quite high? I mean this screen is over 300nits, so at 60% would be like having most laptops on full brightness!
-
hahah....this, definitely.
-
No specific benchmarks, only extrapolation based on i5-430m. I would also like to see an actual benchmark comparison.
-
UUh. Radiance at 60% ? 4h10 battery. That's actually much better than I thought. You could easily stretch it to 5 hours.
-
solid 4 hours, I am hopeful yet.
-
I got one from Amazon and it works perfectly up to Full HD resolution..
LogiLink Mini DisplayPort Male to VGA Female Converter
Havent used it for long, but tests worked well! -
Wow! 4 hours with wi-fi and a pretty high brightness on the Radiance. It definitely ain't the 7 hours they said, but it's a nice time for me.
-
...the 450m is faster than the 430m which means that there's even less a difference between the 450 and the 520 than the 430 and the 520......its really a negligible difference unless you're encrypting your entire hard drive...
-
I also downloaded the Battery Eater, will test on maximum energy saving when I go to sleep later..
-
Excuse me, but I would appreciate it if you kept your snide comments to yourself thanks.
-
Still an improvement over my Asus's 2:30 with brightness toned down to the same level. I'll probably have to set it to sleep every time I close the lid to use the restrooms.
-
any new discounts ??
-
You posted the same question on youtube, and I answered. It's GDDR3. This isn't an integrated card, so HP is not having the 5650 siphon memory away from your RAM.
-
Much appreciated ... let us know how it goes in the morning ... thanks
-
Barry Ferris YouTube - HP Envy 14 says 7 hours with base system, up to 14 hours with the slice, so no, that's false
