i wonder how long the Envy battery last when only running HP Quick Web (i think thats what the HP lite OS is called on board - the one that saves you having to boot up windows if you only want to use the web or listen to music etc).

Wow, if the Envy 14 can pull a solid 4 hours web browsing over WiFi, then I'm a little more hopeful. I figured it would start dropping into the 3-hours-and-some-change area.

That means with the slice we should be getting over 8 hours, as the slice is actually a slightly higher capacity battery than the internal battery.

His is a legitimate concern. Regular DDR memory can be paired up with a discrete video card - and not shared with main memory. It's not a simple matter of integrated vs. discrete. It's a matter of what memory the video adapter maker decided to pair with said adapter. DDR = cheaper, GDDR = more expensive. Wanting to see the GPU-z serves to prove which memory is is use for the adapter itself.

A little over 4 hours on 60% brightness? Not as high as I had hoped but then again, there always tweaks to lengthen the battery life like disabling the turboboost and going into energy saver mode that should help. 5 hours shouldn't be a problem while doing light web browsing and office tasks. Now all I need to do is gather up some finances. As of late I'm hitting some hard circumstances. Ugh. Just my luck.

Also, someone said the build quality of the Envy series is greater than that of the new pavilion dv lineup and dm4t. That's really not true. They are about the same. Actually one could argue that the build quality of the new Dv's and the dm4t are better than the Envy lineup because of the lackluster build quality of the Envy 17. The new dv's are super sturdy as well as the dm4t. I got to toy around with the new dm4t, it's rock solid.

My Envy 14 order is dropped off at factory, yeh! Does anyone know how long it usually takes from this point on for the laptop to be built? I'm hoping before July 15th.

This seems appropriate for a PC considering the specs. The 2740P gets about this much.

The seven hour claim had to be with the slice. the 2740P can do almost 9 hours with slice.

Actually if you put it in max powersaving mode, lowest brightness, and just let it idle there with no screen savers, I think 7 hours would be possible. But that's totally helpful. ;)

Well, I just called to get my price adjustment, and the lady tried to tell me that not only was I NOT owed an adjustment, but that the cost of the configuration I had chosen had actually gone UP! Unbelievable!!

So, I argued with her and ending up getting a $25 credit. But, it really took me by surprise. I also took the opportunity to complain about the fact that I ordered on the 27th (5am on the 27th!), its now the 6th, and still no shipping notice. Especially since I spoke with HP about a half hour after placing my order, and the rep told me that the date of the 7th is a "worst case scenario", and that they quote these long assembly times to allow them to "under-promise and over-deliver."

So, i asked if there had been some sort of delay with my unit, and she stated unequivocally "No." And stated that if there had been any type of manufacturing or other delay anywhere along the process, that they would have notified me of the situation via email.

So, make of it what you will. <sigh>

    My turn.

    1. We don't insult members in this manner. (I'm looking @ you msweeney. Letting you off with a public warning.)

    2. Ummm... I forgot.

    3. Right, I remember. The bit about the warranty is generally incorrect. In as much as it being per part. There's enough experience on this site that demonstrates that even as little as sending in a notebook with an OS other than the one HP installed can void a warranty. Moreover (<---I just love that word), any do it yourself projects outside of RAM and HDD have been grounds for warranty void.

Now I say generally incorrect because, not every HP script tech primate(c) discovers what you did and therefore your warranty remains in force. In fact the grand majority do not. It's when one calls up asking for help and unwittingly admits to what they have done to a tech support agent, that is when the warranty gets voided.

    4. I remember what #2 was. I have to set my DVR to record Dexter on Showtime on Sunday. Comes on at the same time as True Blood on HBO.

So, I'm going to be buying this E14 but it sounds like customer service is mostly a nightmare. If I ever have to call them about an issue, what's a sound strategy to avoid the bad reps?

I'm thinking simply hanging up, calling again and speaking to a different person is the best way to do it. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? It's kinda ridiculous that I'd have to plan on poor service in advance...

maybe. the difference between no brightness and full brightness is only 2 watts.

so this is my original calculation: 57/15 = 3.8 hrs

    with no brightness: 57/13 = 4.4 hrs

0.6 hrs difference is approximately 30 minutes ---> add that to the 4:10 and u get around 4:40 hrs with no brightness

Since radiance is 60% brighter than screens used for that 2watt assumption and higher pixel density requires higher backlighting to reach the same luminosity level 4 watts is a more realistic draw for such a screen imo.
Im not sure but back in 2007, 4w was the difference between max and min brightness on most screens, having the screen turning off automatically after x minutes saves an additional 2 watts.

Makes sense. I don't really think you'd need the high level of brightness on the 14, as it's probably already bright as it is.

I hope that when people get their laptops in the next few days, that there will be some coordinated and uniform benchmarking done, using the same benchmarking tests and settings.

An important question that needs to be answered by benchmarks: How much CPU power is needed to get the 5650 to reach its full potential?

Yea the extra 60% over normal displays is only useful in very bright rooms or outside as it will outshine reflections.

Yeah aswell, good point on the warranty 2.0. If you do a good and proper job of replacing a cpu for example, no tech will go and check the cpu if all you've got is a screen related problem... However with the the odd, if your laptop has a problem just make sure to put back the odd in before RMA... (technicians love to use bootable diagnostic cds lol)

No, actually its a contemporary expose of historic folklore born out of Eastern Europe during the 18th century. Wrapped deliciously in the inter relationships of the eccentric, yet sultry lives of Louisianans in portrays. All in all, a rather rapacious romp in the Bayou...

2.0 is the best mod outside of Moot, in existence on any forum.

I read something about 200pgs back that thbe batter life was tested with Win Vista, Wireless off, brighness at 0%, and at idle. I could be hallucinating, but im too lazy to go back and
