I can be very convincing lol. I guess we will have to wait and see. I'll let you guys know what happens as soon as i call. I specifically asked if they would discount and ship it separately, and she assured me yes. I know sales reps are, for the most part, dumb. but i dont mind keeping my hopes up.

Who else is getting a SSD in the e14? I got one because the way I see it, there's no point having a fast processor if you have to wait for the hard drive. I just hope 160GB is enough for me

I don't know if this was mentioned yet, but there is a listing for the ENVY 14 now on Amazon, and it is listed as having only 3.75 hours of battery life. Hah!

    Link to it here.

Also, it says that the 5650 has DDR 3, not GDDR3?

My current plan is to get an 80 gig SSD and replace the optical drive with a 500 gig hard drive. I haven't confirmed that this is possible yet though.

Lol, well there's been I'd say 50 pages of talk about the amazon model concerning battery life, which screen it really has, and people calling up amazon and hp and asking to straighten it out.

Why only 500? Might as well get a 750 or 1TB western digital.

word!!! but isn't the battery life bad, that would be a crazy card to use. Hmm are there any equivalent workstation cards?

yeah I see that, thats why I was wondering with that. Will GPGPU help? if it helps then maybe i need a good GPU?

I was able to generate that ENVY 14 CTO price glitch again (see the attached files...I printed the entire web page to the PDF files)

I really don't know what is going on  but I doubt HP is cutting the prices for that low

Did you configure any other models, I remember there being a glitch where the info for one model gets mixed with another if you CTO both models, weird since the i7 620M is an option.

No, because Quad Cores do not have a dedicated Intel onboard GPU (either built into the CPU or onto the motherboard).

The only way this is possible is if Nvidia or ATI decided to implement their own integrated GPU onto the motherboard, but this is likely not easy or possible due to compatability with the Intel Chipsets.

    Hi,
I'm new with the envy line...and thinking of purchasing one. However i have several questions :

1)I heard that envy line have heat issue, does it applies to envy 14?
    2)How was the screen quality?
    3)Which one faster?The ATI radeon 5650 or nvidia GT330M?
    4)Any known defects/complaints?
5)I'm having a hard time finding envy 14 outside hp.com..how so?

i would appreciate any input. thank you.

Its in the i7-620m, but that option isn't offered by HP.

What does make me wonder is what is different between the motherboards they offer for i3/i5 vs i7s...

Ordered on the 27th. Well, it's now the 8th. And it still says "in production" estimated shipping on the 7th."

Someone had mentioned an HP rep saying the status site is sometimes slightly behind actual events. I'm still hopeful. It has to be manually updated by some1 at UPS scanning your box or whatever, right?

yayyy just called to see if I could get a discount somewhere, so I said I wanted to downgrade to an i3 so that I could save some money. Then the lady just said it would be easier if they gave me a $50 credit. SO I have $50 off for that, $24 off for calling in earlier in the week because of the i5 price drop, and %10 student discount. Pretty nice if I say so myself =]

So my total spent is now around $1,074, for the base config with the upgrade to the i5 450. Now I just have to wait for it to ship on the 13th =\

    1. look at posts from erathostenes who posted some temp benchmarks. so far temps seem reasonable.
    2. the screen is one of this laptop's selling points
    3. look on notebookcheck and you'll find out easily (ATI Mobility Radeon 5650)
    4. some people were disappointed by the ~4 hour battery life as opposed to the 7 hour advertised by HP, but we still don't know the possibilities from a clean installation, underclocking, etc.
    5. as someone previously addressed, it's only been 1 1/2 weeks since release. you can find the envy 14 on amazon, costco, and probably a few other places.

Anyone have their order shipped yet? We're approaching the time to start figuring out if these are going to show up on time or if we're going to have to wait like the early adopters of the Envy 17.

According to the maintennce manual to remove the optical drive caddy you have to remove the whole front pannel (keyboard + whatever that is around it). It's feasable but It will be hard to find a matching caddy... and painful to swap.

    Hey folks,

A screen question: I'm used to smaller (14" and under) laptops with resolutions that are much lower (~1280 x ~1000 or ~1080 x ~800) than the Envy's 1600 x 900. How the heck are we not going to be busting out a magnifying glass to read the screen? Yes, I know text and icons are crisp and clean but aren't they just going to be phenomenally small and tough to read on a 14"?

    Thanks -
    JGE

We'll either A: Have good enough eye sight

or B: Break out the OS "increase the size of stuff" thing where the OS makes everything X% bigger.

or..uh, just run at a lower resolution

Just curious, anyone managed to get more than $100 by calling hp? It doesn't have to be just 1 call, I mean like.. calling to get money back for cpu price drop, then calling to get 3% cashback from fatwallet, then call again to get a cheaper cpu, etc

Having a more powerful GPU won't increase the computing speed of programs that are CPU dependent. But I would still get a laptop with a reasonably powerful GPU for the times when you will use a GPU dependent program. More often than not, though, the CPU will be more important.

A: The eye sight is good, but I'd like to keep it that way!

B: Is this doable on Windows 7? Got any more details?

C: Yeah, not so much, as the images then look crappy.

So hopefully B is where it's at. Got any more details?

I just tried this, and it sorta works. I tracked by reference - put in my zip and my HP order number - but the only items that came up were my cable lock and my sleeve, which I've already gotten. The computer itself doesn't show up. Then again, mine isn't supposed to ship until sometime later today.

So for those of us who are supposed to get our computers shipped soon, this might be the best way to find out if it has shipped, and if it has, where it is at the moment. If you guys are anything like me, you'll be checking back every 5 minutes!

Man, went to work, and this thread advanced ~50pages. I read about 10 of the new pages (42x - 43x), and saw that Jonathan confirmed that the CPU has the ability to max with and without E14 being plugged in, which is great. Getting sleepy now, so I cant read the next ~40pages.. Anything else important to share? Did the prices come down for the slice yet? Is it even confirmed to be a true slice?

Thanks to those who are patient with me and allowing me to skip the 50 pages :p
