Sadly, it's impossible to toggle between the integrated on an i7 because an i7 (apart from the i7-620-i7-640M series) has no integrated graphics.

Hmmm....I tried to use the fatwallet discount with the student discount, and no dice. Exactly which fatwallet discount are you talking about? Have a link or code?

I believe the issue is there is no integrated graphics to switch to when the i7 is used. When you have an i5 or i3 you have both integrated and discreet graphics that you switch between.

    Alright guys.

1). The lab is available for full uses for 1st and 2nd year students, only if the prof allow it. (So much for explicit personal research)
2). With all the math, science, mechanics and stuff I have computer and communication theory, so computer information theory, computing is needed there.
3). License, well I might just have to rar those programs for myself ;)
4). Yeah its a touch decision.
5). Is there any laptop with nvidia Geforce 480M or any variants? (i hear its the best single GPU card)

I'll believe it when I see it. Who knows, they could have found a whole crate of G1's in the back room. It happens... trust me, I'm an engineer and have seen worse.

Pretty much what I got except for Win 7 Pro. I didn't go 840QM because I was afraid of too much heat although I have a feeling the 720QM may have some issues. I hope I'm wrong.

The one that says hp 3% cashback on the left. It won't show the discount at hp, it'll show in your fatwallet account 2-3 days after your purchase.. just like bing.

haha nice, I was told the reps are allowed to give up to $100 back without asking for permission, anything more and it goes through a whole bunch of mess.

On a related note, the i7-620m through i7-640m series of CPUs might as well be i5-620m through i5-640m because spec-wise, an i7-6x0m series is just a very powerful i5.

    Yup, their all dual cores.

You either get dual cores w/ integrated graphics, or you get quad cores and no graphics.

Wow if you get all those discounts-you will definitely be a lucky man. I ordered the same config but with 320 GB HDD; price came down to about $1134 (can't remember exact), I still have to call HP up and ask them to make a price match (I ordered on June 28)....but wow, if I knew about those other coupons/cash back sites, I would have definitely got your setup. Only ~$40 more.....

The GTX 480M is the most powerful card for gaming, but it won't be the best for professional applications. The Quadro FX series has optimized drivers for pro apps, so they will perform better in pro apps than a more powerful gaming card. But they won't be as good for gaming.

Be sure to get a good CPU. Most of the engineering programs you'll be using are more CPU dependent than GPU.

Not that I know of, there are dual core i7s with integrated that can be switched, but I'm pretty sure all quad core chips currently do not have integrated graphics, so can only use discreet GPUs.

Click on Order Status at the top middle of the HP website and log in your account. then you click on the order number in the box, looks something like H#########, then scroll down a bit then you will see the estimated build date and in the box below you will see the estimated ship date.

Think you get an estimated ship date once your laptop has been built. Mine is estimated to be built on the 14 and the other box says
    "Estimated ship date:
Your customized HP ENVY 14 customizable Notebook PC will be
    built by July 14, 2010"
So i presume once that date come i will see a ship date in that box

I am unsure why it's giving you an estimated shipping date which differs from your build date. I ordered on June 27th somewhere in the middle of the day. Mine says:

"Estimated build date: July 7, 2010
    No tracking number available"

and then below that (which is the box I'm assuming you're referring to):

    "Estimated ship date:
Your customized HP ENVY 14 customizable Notebook PC will be
    built by July 7, 2010"

I have no other information on the page regarding build or ship dates. In my experience with HP notebooks in the past, the build and ship dates are the same thing.

I loved that review posted in the OP from tech report. Looks like it just came out a couple days ago. It does a really good job of showing the value of SSD's today.

The Intel 160gb G2 which is in the Envy 14 made it into the top 3 SSD's (4th overall including HDD's) for "Performance per dollar (system) per GB - Overall". The Crucial C300 made top spot, but i think reliability and dependability is a measurable metric not listed on that graph that vaults the Intel SSD to top spot for SSD's.

I think if it says "built by July xx, 2010" then it can be safe to assume that it will be shipped the same day.
But don't take my word for it.

I have experienced something similar...after leaving the ENVY 14 CTO page open for a looooooooooooooooooooooong while. When I finally came back to it and changed a feature I noticed in the updated total price had the base price as $999 and it had an instant rebate too...I didn't believe my eyes so I quickly refreshed the page but it took me back to the HP products home page. I selected the ENVY 14 again but alas :( it was just a glitch the base price was back to $1099

P.S., On the ENVY 14 CTO page I was using the "LIST-VIEW" as opposed to the default "WIZARD-VIEW" when this occurred

Found some answers regarding shipping dates.

Build date and shipping date are absolutely the same thing. According to HP's shipping and delivery page:

HP Home & Home Office Store - Shipping and delivery

"Custom-built laptop PCs ship as soon as they're built"

And in navigating further, one gleans the information, "Shipping time frames for customized PCs are determined by the components you choose. To find out when your system will be shipped, look for the "Estimated build date" as you customize the PC.

Our estimated build dates factor in the number of business days (Monday through Friday, excluding New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day) it will take to build your system. Your delivery date will also vary with the shipping method you select during checkout. In addition, for customized notebook PCs, please factor in a minimum of one shipping day for customs clearance. "

Sounds like we should expect that even though the webpage still says "In Production," those who ordered on June 27th may still have on-time deliveries after all. As someone else already mentioned, wait a day for customs clearance and we'll know for sure on Friday.

Yes! hibernation has nothing to do with the battery. The contents of your RAM at the time of hibernation is written to the hard disk while the computer shuts down as usual. I believe if you hibernate your PC(7, Vista, XP...) take out the battery, take out the RAM, take out the hard disk, take out the DVD drive, take the video card, take the wireless card  ...basically even if you disassemble the laptop as long as you're able to assemble it back successively (without changing the state of the hard disk) your computer when booted will return to exactly what you're doing before you hibernated ;)

I don't think they let you buy one separately, even through a sales rep or resolutions department. If it's not on the site, you'll probably have to go through to the parts department, and they probably don't allow for haggling as easily
