I want to measure the DVD drive, may upgrade to a blu ray drive if its standard size, like the M15X (can be had for under $100 nowadays)

I think Johnobots has probably mix and matched Envy components the most. He might as well have built his Envy 15 himself, lolz.

To use eyefinity, you have to 'group' them in the catalyst control centre, unless you group them, they will just be duplicate monitors. When they are grouped, they are treated as one big monitor and then you can set your games to use the huge res. And you're right, about the monitors.

Yep, I'm very familiar with the Envy 15 innards. I've fully dissassembled and reassembled several times. Did a speaker bar replacement, LCD Panel replacement, LCD backplate replacement, CPU swap, memory swap, dual micro-sata ssd/hdd swap, GPU thermal paste upgrades...

I really, really love my Envy 15 Limited Edition, never spent so much time upgrading and also meticulously cleaning (and even waxing) a computer. The 17 will really, really have to blow me away for me to be willing to sell it. And i guess it will be nice not having to buff away fingerprints after using it everytime (feel like Golem petting 'my precious' sometimes).

Word of advice to fellow HP Envy thrillseekers: Keep all your original parts so if you have problems later, you can reinstall them and still be able to make use of your HP Warranty. Hard drives and memory don't apply of course. I will be selling my 2x320GB drives, or put one in my PS3 or something. Who knows.

Curious whether any of the Envy 17s that are shipping have the SSD in their config. That may be the one thing that is common with the rest of us who ordered on Day 1 but whose orders have not shipped.

You say we need to group menitors but we cant use the laptop's, but can we make the laptop's screen part of that group?

    NO.
The only display configurations that include the laptop screen is:
    1. laptop by itself.
    2. laptop with one monitor.

    That's it I'm afraid.

Hmm....on many laptops that have both HDMI and VGA ports, you can connect two external monitors and display on them(not using EyeInfinity). However, the laptop display is not enabled. Can you confirm if this is not possible with the ENVY 17?

    Really?
I ordered at 6am EST on 5/19, the exact same thing but without the extra 9-cell, and with 2 day FedEx... and I'm still in production. Are you serious, HP? I'm PCSing in about 2 weeks, so this laptop needs to arrive.

We ordered within minutes of each other early a.m. on the 19th, very similar configs. I'm now wondering if our delay has to do with the 4GB memory chip. Can't think of anything else.

Well my memory was an hour off. When I looked up my email trail, I see the Bing cashback email came in at 9:20am 5/19. I think that one was only 5-10 minutes after the actual order. BTY, I also got the 1080p (of course) and the single 4GB chip option. However, I see my FedEx track still does not show an actual departure, so I doubt it will make it here by Friday. Who knows, maybe HP just generated a FedEx label ahead of time just to make it look like they made the June 1st delivery estimate. I'll update next when I see an actual shipment track started.

I just got off the phone with a rep, and she said there was no reported delay for my order. She told me that if I don't get a change in my shipping status and get a tracking number my midnight, I'll need to call again tomorrow. She hinted that a delay in the phase could get my shipping upgraded. I'm not gonna hold my breath on that one, but it'd be nice if it were true.

Btw, my customer service rep (S***h) sounded so high- chuckling and trying to flirt. I doubt she was on something as she was very thorough on checking my status, but it was no doubt the most unexpected and funniest cs talk I ever had :D

    OK - I have my HP 17-1002TX

I was playing BF BC2 for a couple of hours last night - I have to say that the front left gets way too hot for comfort. I swear my hand was near to burning.

Anyone else suffering the same issues?

The left edge does get hot, but I don't place my hand there, my wrist just rests next to the trackpad. Were you using it in your lap? I'd imagine it would get much hotter in your lap due to some vent getting blocked.

So if I found an interesting post on another forum that is related to getting three monitors with eyefinity (not specifically for our setup).

Drool: AMD's EyeFinity, 6 Monitors, and 24 million pixels

Search for the word "extend" and read daydream and glynor's posts. Watching the link that glynor posted is neat as well.

From what they're saying, using a monitor that supports displayport is crucial to getting 3 monitors to work. How that might affect what I want (two external monitors while keeping the laptop display) I don't know, but It might be possible. If anyone has one displayport monitor (passive adapters will not work apparently) and one other monitor (VGA or HDMI) please let me know if you can use both externals and the laptop display at the same time. I'm not holding out for success but I still have a glimmer of hope.

    Thoughts? Frustrations from displayportlessness??

edit: Thanks for the screenshots jaxxy!

I was playing with mi wrist just tothe left of the trackpad - using WSAD for the gameplay. The laptop was on my desk & I use the 9-cell battery so the airflow was ok. I may just have a gpu that runs a bit hotter than normal. was getting 85c mid-game.

I looked at the maintinance guide & couldn't see any specific chip that looked like it was the source of the heat - I wonder if the metal case is acting like a heatsink from the gpu / cpu

    I ordered my Envy 17 on May 27 w/no ssd, with i7-820qm, one stick of 4gb, 1080p, blu ray, twin 500gb hard drives and a standard battery. I will let ya'll (i am from texas) know when my status changes from;

    Order in production
(Estimated to ship on June 8, 2010)

Maybe this will help some of you wondering about production delays due to particular configurations or help later envy purchasers set a time frame for their builds.

Thanks, can't wait and enjoy yours!

Can anyone help me understand what my ram upgrade choices are? I ordered 1 dimm of 4GB with mine, and I would like to upgrade it to 6 or 8GB. I saw on newegg that I can get a 2GB stick for a little over $50 and a 4GB stick for less than $200. I would prefer to just upgrade to 6GB but I thought that would conflict with this info from the HP site:

    Code:
DISCLAIMER: Dual Channel is supported only when the system is configured with DDR3 symmetric memory (e. g., 2x1024MB).
Does this mean that putting in an additional 2GB stick would still only give me 4GB to work with as opposed to 6?

Nope... you'll get 6gb, no problem. Dual channel occurs when you have two of a same size memory modules.. which gives SLIGHT performance gains in memory or something obscure. Not an issue to be without it

I believe you may need to turn off the display of the laptop first in order to display to dual external monitor setup. There is an internal switch which turns off the laptop display when the lid is closed according to the manual.

Oh yeah - this is a note of advice to anyone reimaging their 17-1002TX laptop with the non HP image.

Make sure you make a copy of the c:\swsetup folder before you rebuild. I tried it without doing that & found HP have yet to upload any drivers for this laptop.

ALSO - I had issues getting the ATI video driver from the internet to detect the card. I got around that by installing the one that is in the c:\swsetup folder - that seems to detect & install the right driver. You can then upgrade to the latest ATI driver from the web & it will actually work.

11000 in 3DMark 06? That's not overclocked or anything? Strips the best overclocked 5830 gen 2 envy 15's by 1500 odd points... beats most by 2000-2500.

That's quite nice... how is heat on this thing?

Thanks for trying the different combos out Jaxxy. I would really be surprised if this laptop could not output to two external monitors, with the laptop display turned off.

I mean it's great that it can display to 3 external monitors using the ATI infinity drivers, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that someone can find a way to get the dual external monitor set up to work.

Not a deal breaker, but would be nice to use my current dual external monitor setup that I have right now with my dell laptop without the need to use the ATI infinity stretch display of the ENVY 17 as I want my two external displays to have independent resolutions.

Guess I will have muck around with my ENVY when it arrives.

Hang on, I have been trying to get 2 external monitors PLUS the laptop display at the same time.

It CAN do 2 external monitors with the laptop display off, they can be duplicates or extended with a different resolution on each.

    Sorry for the confusion.
