Hey Jaxxy,
I just finished chatting with HP tech support and they seem to think that two externals plus the laptop screen should work. Who knows if they really know. When I asked for documentation they sent me to this page:
Using Two or More Displays in Windows 7 HP Envy 17-1001tx Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
It is not specific to the Envy 17 but it uses the windows 7 screen resolution thing (as shown in the link) to deal with extending the displays. You have probably already tried this, but if not, it's worth a shot.

Just checked my order status and still in production. Since it's already past close of business in shanghai, guess it won't ship today. Must be the early bird penalty as I ordered at 6:30 am on may 19.

-
^It's 5am here in LA and my status is still unchanged. I ordered at 12pm on the 19th. I just don't get it... why the arbitrary delay?

Judging from the engadget photo gallery, there are 4 intake grills on the bottom in intercardinal directions? If that's so, what's a good cooling solution for this?
-

My shipment initially said June 1 and estimated delivery date June 4 by 10:30 am. It just shipped June 2 and now it says estimated delivery date June 7 by 10:30 am. And I paid for 2-day shipping. I hope they know I will be seeking a refund.

I'm beginning to have queasy feelings about HP's lack of info.....
I ordered a ThinkPad W510 with the FHD screen, in January, and when the promised ship date arrived (and passed) Lenovo was very slow in admitting they couldn't meet their deadlines -- then they began moving the ship dates out and finally (for the FHD models) pushed them several months into the future -- many (most?) of us cancelled our orders. In fact, it was that decision that prompted me to seriously consider HP -- hope I'm not seeing a repeat. -
However, I'm not taking sides with HP either as they should have anticipated a good amount of sales for the Envy 17 in the first few weeks at least (the customer rep called it their "flagship notebook"). They should have tried their best to at least meet their own estimated dates if they couldn't exceed it. I just got off the phone with the CS and they are indeed blaming the holiday weekend and FedEx for not being able to meet their projected dates. That excuse doesn't fly since some people here already got their orders in shipping now. If they don't get the 5/19 shipped by today, it's going to cause orders made on the following days to become delayed as well.
Bah, I'm not at the point of being angry, but it irritates me when companies get lazy like this. In a world economy dictated by deadlines and efficiency, some entities just think it's ok to fudge around while others are made to strictly follow them... -

sorry to hear you guys on the front lines of the Envy 17 experience are having trouble. hope they work out for you all in the end. I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase, for what it's worth.
best of luck! -
AJREYNOL,
Can you elaborate on the pluses and minuses of your Envy 17? What kind of battery life are you getting? I am thinking the 17 is a little too big to move around but am worried the 14 is too small. -

Hi Everyone,
I am new to this board and am thinking about getting the Envy 17. Can anyone provide an opinion about the i7 720QM versus the i5? It is my understanding that the i7 in the Envy 17 only has discrete graphics. Does the i5 have the integrated graphics and the discrete and the ability to have the discrete graphics turned off automatically or is it a manual process? I'm assuming the battery life will be better using the i5. Can anyone confirm this? Any opinions between the two processors are appreciated. Will not be doing heavy gaming or using applications that really require lots of CPU power.
Thanks -

Hi,
My name is Fabrizio and I'm Italian.
I am interested 's envy 17.
In Italy will be available in late June.
Can you tell me if you can install mac osx in vmware? Someone tried?
Or a Hackintosh OS (think not)?
Thank you very much.
Fabrizio. -
Guys,
Just got a notification of shipment delay email:
Due to product constraints we will be unable to ship your order on the original estimated ship date. The revised estimated ship date for your order is 6/5/2010 or no later than 7 business days from the original estimated ship date
Original ship date was yesterday. I had placed my order around 2pm on 5/19. I assume its because I ordered with an SSD since its not available in the config now. Not suprised it was delayed. No reason to get mad, it's just a laptop =) Waiting just sucks though! -
To bixiosun:
Discussion of Hackintosh and trying to get Mac OS installed on non-Apple hardware is against the rules of this forum. -
Envy Delay--Me too:
Ordered on 5/19.
No SSD
8gig RAM
i7-720QM
9 cell batt
Full HD HP Ultra BrightView Infinity LED Display (1920x1080)
So it's anyone's guess as to the cause for the delay.
"Due to product constraints we will be unable to ship your order on the original estimated ship date. The revised estimated ship date for your order is 6/5/2010 or no later than 7 business days from the original estimated ship date."
Update 30 min later ($25 coupon for a new purchase):
"Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for your order. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced with your custom computer. To thank you for your patience, please accept this coupon for $25 off one item purchased at HP Home Store. Coupon expires 7/31/10." -
Just got the same. Interesting that they offer to cancel the order. My paranoid side wonders if this is because we used bing cash back 25%.
Edit: they just sent a $25 coupon due to the delay. My paranoid self is back under control. -
i5, 1 stick 4GB, SSD+HDD, 1080p lcd -
I guess most of us who ordered when it was released on the 19th had our shipments delayed by a working week. I assume that everyone else who ordered this laptop after that will similarly get a week's delay.

cancelled - double post

What I don't understand is why HP said there was no problem on their end and blamed FedEx for not picking up the shipment on time. I called twice on two separate days, and they both said the assembly was finished and there is no noted delay on their end. The second rep, after speaking with their supervisor, even said it was ready to ship, but FedEx didn't come pick it up; she even said that I should be getting tracking info by tonight if not tomorrow. Now it turns out that "due to product constraints..." HP can't ship before the 5th? What a load of bs. I wouldn't mind so much if they told the truth from the beginning, but saying one thing, blaming others, then saying something that contradicts everything else said before just doesn't sit well with me.
I'm going to have to wait like the rest of you who ordered on the 19th, but this is definitely going to have a lasting negative impression of HP for me- not because of the delay, but because of their mismanagement with customer service.
P.S. $25 consolation for an extra week of wait isn't a good bargain. I'm going to try and get another incentive from them... -
-
Btw, what is there to get with a $25 gift certificate? There are no good sleeves/cases for a 17" laptop (I don't need a backpack), there aren't any good mice, there aren't any reasonably priced storage solutions... there doesn't seem to be anything worth buying.
Since it expires at the end of July, I wonder if I can use it to buy a gift card that doesn't expire, lol. -
I think that every single delayed computer had the 1080p screen; maybe its the reason, like last time with the dreamcolor2 display.
-
It isn't completely tied to the FHD screen if it is at all. That was part of my order and I haven't been notified of any delays related to my order. Status is shipped on the HP website and my fedex status is being updated with movement information.
-
I had the standard shipping and my original estimated delivery date said June 4th, and now it's 8th. -
Mine has been marked as June 3rd since it updated to shipped status on Monday and I found the tracking number online. I had been refreshing the status on the HP website often and got the shipping information there at least half a day before I got the 'shipped' email from HP.

experience".... 3-5 month delays when their supply of FHD screens got interrupted (if you look on their site you'll see they don't offer anything better than HD+ even now). I ended up canceling and ordering an Envy 15.
BTW I see that my order still shows June 1st even tho I got same delayed email as others - curious. -
ok, i did NOT get an email indicating a delay but i did notice that my estimated delivery date/time has changed.
previously, i was supposed to receive my shipment on 6/4 by 430pm
now it reads estimated date/time of arrival is same day 6/4 by 1200pm
4.5 hours ahead of schedule? i'll take it.
i also ordered 5/19 -
Hello everyone. I too have ordered an Envy 17 on the 19th of May. I just received the delayed shipment email that moves the ship date from the 1st of June to the 5th. I called to cancel and they offered me a $100 refund to not cancel. So if you want an extra discount, you know what to do.
-
I think the rest of you 5/19ers should think about your options as well. -
-
Place my order on the afternoon of 5/19. 1080p screen, i5, no SSD. Got the same shipping delayed email and cheapo $25 coupon. I'm not in a huge rush for the machine, but i'm also not going to let them string me out either.
-
-
It doesn't void your cashback. I specifically asked them if it would and they said no since it is not a coupon. -
Any news on battery life yet? I've been refreshing like crazy and I am not seeing anything.
-
Just out of curiosity...assuming that you'd run windows 7 on both, why choose the Envy 17 over the MacBook pro 17"?
-
Macbooks are overrated. Macbook pro is too expensive for what it gives you. Nvidia Optimus is having issues on the Macbook.
The Envy 17 is much better for the price if configured correctly. You get the 5850 which hands down beats the 330m in the Macbook pro. You get USB 3.0. You get Eyefinity. You don't have to buy adapters to hook up external monitors. You are not tied to Apple.
Sure it may seem like I hate Apple. Yes, I hate Apple. I would not buy their products, but if given something for free, I'll take it. I did consider a Macbook for college, but it just doesn't justify the cost. -
...Not to mention poor driver support on the Windows side.
-
I know it seems like a small detail, but I couldn't do without the number pad. I could do with one of those gorgeous screens though, those things are nice. I hope the 1080p Envy 17 screen is comparable to it. If the length of the name of the screen* is any indicator of quality and longer is better, it should be pretty damn good!

Really? I didn't realise the 5850 had that much of a significant edge over the 5830...
