    Pedromartinez, have you checked the Event Viewer for any info. Filter it for the specific times and dates that it is crashing and see if it says anything. If it is blue screening there should be a dump file that can be of help to some tech support personnel. Often times blue screens are caused by faulty hardware. Your configuration also seems like one that could suffer heat problems. Are you monitoring your temperatures?

    Well as a person who has had this laptop for a couple of weeks, I can say that apart from one or two quirks - this is one hell of a nice laptop.
    My 3DMark08 got a score of 11340. I am having issues getting my Vantage to run - when I do I'll post that.

    I have access to a digital temp sensor & plan to get a reading for the front left of my laptop. I'm curuious to see how hot it gets after an hour of BC2 ;)

    All I can say about my 'possible' overheating concerns, is that I am in Australia & we are currently in winter. I am just concerned at how the laptop will behave in the middle of summer.

    I hope that by that time, HP will allow us some method to control how far the i7 automatically overclocks. Else I'll put my money on a custom firmware that allows me to do that myself ;) ( come on any crazy russian that knows how to do this - lol )

    & for anyone who is suffering by the delays - hang in there. It seems that we lucky few in Australia got them a bit pre-release.

    UPDATE - Oh yeah - I ended up replacing one of my HDD's with an SSD & imaged my laptop with a clean version of Win7. The SSD makes a huge difference.

    I find it ironic that I was the first person on this forum to order an Envy 17 CTO (before 6:00 am on the day of introduction) and I have not received a notice of shipment.

    For me, that's actually encouraging since I placed my order very early that same morning and have not yet rec'd a shipping notice either -- was beginning to wonder if there's something wrong with my order..... in fact, I'm seriously considering cancelling -- not so sure I really NEED the Envy 17 and this continuing delay is forcing me to re-evaluate my priorities.... nothing against the machine as I'm sure it's every bit as good as those who have one are saying, just questioning whether I need a 3rd pc right now.

    Awesome, I am going to do this myself and was wondering what brand and capacity did you get and does everyone think 160gb is plenty-o-room (i will have a 500gb secondary drive) or should i wait till the 256gb prices come down, also is there any decrease of performance with having a larger ssd?

    160GB is plenty. Just put your OS and most used apps on it. Put your games on the 2nd drive since games don't really benefit from an SSD other than faster level load times.

    Ok, having dicided to get the 160gb ssd, would the Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH160G2R5 be the correct model to get if I were going Intel? I just want to make sure I get the current ssd technology having heard in this forum that there are more than one type.

    Thanks 2.0!

    Yup, I will pull the trigger and get that RAM than.

    Agreed. Much cheaper than the $375 upgrade for the HP site. I wanted to get a more 'well-known' brand like cosair or G.skill at newegg but I think getting the same exact matching samsung RAM found in our ENVY's is much better and ALOT cheaper . :cool:

    Btw, can any current owners confirm the Mfr Part number and Part # of the Samsung RAM in their laptops?

    Crucial.com shows the same specs as your #1 here though their memory matching app;

    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=AD861428A5CA7304

    Your #2 looks like it may possibly be the same but doesn't show all the specs.

    I am by no means an expert so if anyone else has more information please let us know. I have already purchased #1 fearing stock will run out. Crucials memory matching tool is pretty usefull, you can find it here;

    For those of you who ordered on Amazon, it seems that Amazon may have the Envy 17 in stock soon. I checked today and it seems that some new seller store popped up by the name of Claude's Computer Place with 1 Envy 17 in stock. It seems to be the same specs as Amazon's version. Maybe this is a sign that Amazon will have stock soon?

    Im sure this was answered before, but why is the amazon model so much cheaper? The amazon model seems to have everything i would want if i was to order from hp online (1920 x 1080 screen, 8 gigs of ram, and an i7 processor). Does the amazon version have the same build quality, just as good as a screen, etc if i was to order from them instead of HP? Does amazon save money on not taking your money on the processor upgrade?

    Odds are the Amazon version is subsidized. Kind of like how when you find a Dell or a HP at Best Buy and they're cheaper than specs indicate.

    Yeah, Claudes Marketplace has no transactions so far. While tempting, as they say they have stock, I can't in my right mind order from them... I did, however, just pull the trigger on the Amazon deal. Who knows maybe they'll come in tomorrow and I could have it by Tuesday. A man has to have hope, doesn't he?

    I decided to order the Amazon model - at the rate hp.com is delivering it might actually beat them - and I had to be one of the earliest direct orders on May 19th but I'm beginning to suspect HP is dragging their feet with those 25% BCB orders.

    I suspect he meant that Amazon has negotiated a VERY favorable cost from HP to resell this configuration - the negotiated cost being low enough to offer at such a good price to the consumer. Amazon merely takes orders and HP ships them.

    Amazon probably made an agreement to get X amounts of a fixed configuration model from HP for Y wholesale cost. This X amount needs to be high enough for them to get cheaper Y wholesale cost from HP. With this cheaper cost, Amazon is able to keep their sales prices low, yet make enough for a comfortable net profit. Even though Amazon must have pre-ordered A LOT of their own config models, their competitive price will ultimately bring in enough demand to sell most of their stock. Whatever is left over can be repurchased by other vendors (or back to HP) and be sold for the normal price anyhow, so it wouldn't make for bad business.

    This particular business deal is only made possible because of Amazon's extensive market.

    Let's see...

    So it takes one day to get to Alaska, and then another day to reach the west coast? I live in SoCal, and it usually takes them 1.5 days to receive, process, and deliver. If Shanghai ships today, then those of us on the wc should get it on the 9th... ONLY IF FedEx pushes their mules.

    The machines have to clear customs in AK. Judging by the Envy 15 experience, this can take a day or two.

    The Econ 101 answer is economy of scale. When HP can build enough of a single configuration, it costs much less. More simply, this points out that HP has a big honkin' profit margin on the Envys, since economy of scale can't account for the entire $850 difference between the Amazon model and the equivalent CTO.

    Before we get too indignant, let's remember that Apple sells their machines for more and delivers less, apart from their somewhat better build quality and the priceless mystique.

    It's really $850?

    Edit: Oh it is, but part of that is the ridiculous price for RAM at HP.

    If I saw the Amazon specs, I would've bought that I think.

    The amazon deal doesn't make sense, because it looks like they are selling the base model for the full $1399 price, so why would they be offering such a deep discount on the higher end config? It doesn't make sense. It says it has 8gb ram and a quadcore i7 for $1650. Thats an even better deal than the BCB, considering you don't have to wait 2 months for it, and you avoid tax buying on Amazon. It is very likely an error on the info listed on amazon.com. Amazon has been known to make mistakes like this before, on pages where they have an item listed that they are not actually selling/shipping yet. For example, I saw a picture of the envy 17 on amazon.com before it's 'official' debut by hp, and it was saying that is was 5.1 lbs... The page just said coming soon, and the pictures were the real envy 17 pictures, but the specs were all goofy, and seems like they were mostly copied from the envy 15. I mean if the deal is real, it's great, but it just seems too good to be true.

    Sorry to double post from the regular HP forum thread, but it seems pretty solid about the Amazon specs based on their "specs from manufacturer" description and PDF datasheet attachment. Dunno though, I pre-ordered the Amazon one. Great deal!

    I like how Amazon is advertising 5.75 hours of battery life. I think it's misleading to count the life of both batteries as if it were just one battery, unless that thing is hot swappable. Amazon has a great deal going though, especially if that blu-ray is accurate. Considering the fact that they've made a legit looking spec sheet (the pdf), it looks safe to assume that the laptop they will be selling is expected have those great specs. I got the $300 off coupon through HP and the Amazon deal is making that discount look bad, especially after paying over $100 in tax!

    I ordered my Envy 17 from HP with the $300 discount. I spoke with an Amazon rep last week and was told that Amazon usually has a pdf with the computer details when they know exactly what they are going to sell. Lo and behold, a week later they released the pdf. So, it seems like Amazon will be selling the Envy 17 as listed. It doesn't make sense because similarly configured will cost over $2300 from HP. I couldn't even get HP to match the ram and harddrive for my current order. They keep giving me bs saying that they can only issue 1 discount per order and that they have chosen to give me the bigger discount (especially when I told them that I used my EPP discount and then later told them that I was going to cancel and reorder because I could save more with the $300 coupon, thus they matched the price with the coupon).

    I might receive my HP order this week, but I'm really considering sending it back after a week, unless of course HP is willing to send me another 4GB stick of ram and another harddrive.

    yea, holy crap I didn't even realize they are throwing in blu-ray and the extra battery in the amazon deal. I hope this can be verified legit soon. I am temped to order one right now, but it doesn't say anywhere when amazon will actually be shipping the unit, since it's pre-order only, and I would like to have some idea when I will receive the machine, and I don't want to pay for it today and still not have it a month from now.

    -and also, if this deal is legit, I can't see it lasting that long, because it's going to screw w/ hp's direct sales when people like metril start calling hp wondering why they can't get a deal from hp direct anywhere close to what amazon is offering.

    I would expect something this week or the following. I'm surprised as well, but it looks like HP put a delay on nearly everyone. There's no way big reviewers will pass on the Envy 17 considering the notoriety of the Envy series.

    Ok, though I purchased the ENVY 17 with the 25% BCB a few weeks ago, and seeing how Amazon seems to have updated their site with a pdf of the specs of the ENVY 17-1011NR that give a impossibly better deal, I also made the decision to go ahead and place an order through Amazon. This way, if the Amazon deal turns out too good to be true, I will still have the BCB deal I had with HP. I mean, the fact that they throw in the 2nd batt, blue ray, upgraded screen and full 8GB RAM just makes it a no brainer! Plus, even with the additonal purchase price of $200, I will get an additional year of warranty(3 year total), compared to the 2 yr I have right now....and the fact that if the square trade guys cant rectify my issues within 5 days, I will receive the full price I paid for the laptop even 3 years down the road.....

    I know, it does seem incredulous, the Amazon deal. Could it be specced wrong? Possibly, but with the official HP pdf that can be downloaded with the exact same model number as the one being sold with full documentation of all the goodies being provided, very hard not to believe. If they send a laptop with the wrong specs , I will just return it with no need to pay the 15% charge because the specs sold were documented wrongly. Could it be priced wrong? Possible, but Amazon will have to honor the deal.

    So, for me, it may be a win-win situation with the 2 deals I have on hand, and I guess its just a waiting game again for me.

    @koshinn

    Have you received notification of shipment yet? AFAIK we were the first two here to order CTO. What we have in common is that we both returned Envy 15s and used BCB for the 17. Wouldn't be that hard for HP to know this.

    Ain't the Amazon deal is finalized as the PDF spec sheet is already released? Someone on the Amazon forum said he/she talked to the Amazon rep and confirmed it.

    I received an email from HP notifying me of "shipment" along with a fedex tracking # on saturday morning. The tracking number still shows, 2 days later, that the shipment was initiated and info sent to fedex, but not actually shipped yet.

    So essentially, my computer is still in china.

    Did you use billmelater? I did.

    Checked fedex just now, package "in transit"... which actually means, still in Shanghai. My estimated delivery date is now Thursday. It was supposed to be a week earlier than that... so much for fedex 2nd day.
