I haven't run into any problems after redoing the system. I've done everything to push it to the limit and no problems. I bought Dragon Age: Orgins and runs beautifully with everything maxed out at 1920x1080. No skips or anything.
After considering all my changes, this is what I can trace my problem back too. I downloaded the latest Catalyst Drivers and installed those. I haven't attempted to do so after my fresh install. And I haven't had any problems.
Hope this adds some clarity. Sorry, if I left you guys with the wrong impression. I was just reporting what I was experiencing. The laptop is great. Extremely fast, with 8 gigs of memeory, I must've had 1000 tabs open between firefox, chorme and ie, with Dragon Age running in the background and no hiccups.
Oh by the way. Watch revo installer, it was removing stuff from the C:\swsetup folder. You kind of would like to keep that. As far as the guy saying removing registry entires is bad. He is right but who wants orphan registry entires for a brand new laptop. I don't. -

@Koshinn & PhatCat
I too am part of the "returned Envy15, purchased on 5/19 w/ BCB" crowd. I used my AmEx cc for the purchase. I just checked my tracking and it's headed to AK right now (est. delivery on 6/10). I still can't see a pattern w/ why they delayed shipping. Koshinn, have you been credited ur express shipping costs?
@pedromartinez
Thanks for coming back to clairify your mysterious identity, and also posting your troubleshoot results on what might have caused you the problems. It would have been funny as hell if you really WERE an old typewriting hag, but I guess the myth had to die at some point... -
Thanks for the update pedromartinez, it's reassuring.

lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Wow, pretty disappointing battery performance, actually, dismal! True, it's right in league with other large screen, Core i7, ultra powerful non-switching GPUs. I do agree that if wifi is on, it is likely seeking signals all the time, even if you have ethernet plugged in - computer doesn't know that you can get on the Net via the cable, might just be an internal lan and you still need net access via wifi.
But let's go back to: wow, that sucks (better translation!). Forgive my laziness in not checking, does this machine take a slice battery or have a higher capacity alternative? I guess I thought that perhaps newest technology ATI would have some intelligence to throttle down when nothing challenging is going on. Also, hard to believe there aren't other efficiencies you can design in today that weren't available even a year ago. And what is the problem with switchable graphics with a Core i7 quad? I know it's the chipset, but I am almost certain you can use the HM-55 or -57 with a Core i7 quad, just that the OEM, HP in this case, has some firmware/software to enable that to happen or, alternatively, to enable switching with the PM-55 chip set. Even primitive switching, such as a manual switch, would seem doable, though I think the OEMs know that we all want better battery life and the over powered GPUs are battery killers even when not needed for any of the programs running at a given time.
It seems more and more obvious that, for now, the cpu of choice is the Core i5-540 or Core i7-620 - ie, the very fast, turbo boosted, dual core (plus two more logical cores) cpus, which are fairly easy to use in a switchable graphics configuration for what exact reason I do not know, due to their ability to use the HM chipsets vs the PM that the i7 Quads use. The additional upside to these cpus is that even the on-die integrated Intel GPU is far, far better than previous generations, and it overclocks along with the cpu because it is on the same chip. And yet, and yet, even with the Core i5's in the Envy 17, switchable graphics are not provided!
So, once again, we have a powerhouse machine with a virtually useless battery. Kind of, no deal breaker if it had no battery at all; if you could opt out of the HP battery and save some real money, then just go to a third party, like Replica, and get one on the cheap for those rare times when an hour of battery life provides utility of some sort.
Sorry, beat this subject to death - many times over! It's a pet peeve and never ceases to amaze/disappoint. Bear in mind, we're also talking inefficient use of power off the electrical grid - may not see the diff. in your elec. bill, but it's there, pushing peak capacity beyond it's limits on really hot days. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Thanks again, Jaxxy. -
How many days after "in production" did people see their orders actually ship? My order is now being made in factory with an estimated build date of the 15th, does this sound legit? Sure hopeing not to have my order pushed back!
-
Shipped! Just received my email that it shipped today and should be here by 4:30 pm on 6/11. Original ship date was 6/2 so about a week behind schedule. I hope it actually makes it Friday. I don't want to go another weekend waiting
-
Did anyone who ordered between 5/26 - 5/28 with the $300 coupon get their marching orders yet?
Thanks. -
Ok I'm reaching my limit on this. With an estimated shipping date of the first, and then a delay to the 5th with a promise of shipment no later than 7 days of the original date, and here I am on the 7th with nary a word of communication regarding my forgotten laptop. If I don't hear something by end of work, I think it's time for a nasty phone call and maybe a cancellation.
The main reason I chose the 17 over the 14 was that I didn't want to wait. Well there goes that... I hear Alienware may be coming out with something new as well, HP may have stalled themselves out of a sale. Worst thing is that I can't even check my status online, as their system is grossly fail. Apparently I'm still due to ship on the 1st according to HP.com.
SIGH. -
A few of you folks have speculated that the use of BCB (Bing money?) might be related to the delays.
I spent ordinary, real money and am still delayed.
I intend to call HP this afternoon--limbering up my vocal cords now to be ready to use my angry customer voice.
Congrats to pedromartinez for the resolved diagnosis.
Shiboe-my order status reads like yours (Jun 1). The customer support person claims these will not be updated for delays; instead, emails will be sent. The status page, said she, will be updated upon shipment. Shipment, said she, was to be via FeDex today, even though, she acknowledged, today is tonight in China.

Yeah !!! So, if not touched from the beginning the item is a near perfect (up and down arrows...) super laptop ?
Just some more questions please.
Can you post some temperatures screens after a long session of games with many graphics (example continuos Heaven..or fps) ?
How much is annoing the noise of the only fan inside the note ?
How much is the heat (warm, hot, burst, fire, plasma ...) on the surface/under of the note after the session ?
Some bench numbers (3dmark06, Vantage, Heaven, ecc.) ?
In two words, now that you are using the monster without problems, which are for you the only disadvantages/flows of it vs others (G73JH, MBP,M17X,Sager)??
Many many many Thanks from all of us, future and present owner of the beast. -
ltarmstrong3,
I ordered on 5/27 with the $300 coupon, and my order has actually made it to fedex in China. It was supposedly "shipped" on saturday, but it didn't get into fedex's hands until this morning. But, it is coming! -

5-7 BUSINESS days. does not include Sat or Sun and they have clearance delay which i'm not sure isn included in the 5-7 business days. -
My delivery has been delayed to the 11th. And the drama continues...
-edit-
It's weird. I received an email this morning about the shipment heading out to AK. Then, when I got home around 12 and checked the tracking again, I'm slapped with a shipping exception that states my package is still in Shanghai because it was received by FedEx after their cutoff. I don't think FedEx had anything to do with this. What the frak is up with these games, HP? -
well if mine doesn't ship today (no change in status as of yet) I will call and complain and expect a $100 from hp.

I ordered my Envy 17 on May 28th at approx 1:30pm Phoenix time. I was on the fence trying to decide between the Envy 17 or a Macbook Pro 15" i5. I found the $300 off coupon which pushed me over the edge and I ordered the HP: It originally had, and currently has, an estimated Ship date of Wednesday, June 9th.

Given some of the posts about delivery delays, I'm hopeful but pessimistic about it's arrive 5-7 days later (June 16th). Also, I was hoping that, given the cash outlay, there would be minimal bloat-ware. However, having purchased several HP computers in the past, I knew the possibility of bloat-ware was pretty high. -
ltarmstrong3,
My specs are actually very different from yours! I have the exact same setup as MaybeMac except I got an additional 9-cell battery. -
-
Man that 4GB ram deal on eWiz is so tempting! From what I've read, getting it will not help my type of computing all that much. It's odd how much I want 8GB of ram just so that I can say that I have 8GB of ram. I think I will put that money towards a 3rd monitor instead if I can't find a way to use the laptop monitor as the 3rd monitor. Thoughts?

Thanks. -

25% BCB? Awesome, that definitely seals the deal for the 17.
Any idea how long it will last? And is the cash back calculated from the final price (including taxes)? -
-
Chevalier_du_Roi Notebook Enthusiast
Yeah, I'm on a pretty limited budget so I'll be sticking with the i5. 520 probably.
-
Thanks for listening to my two cents! -
ltarmstrong3,
Whoops, i missed a detail. I actually did get the 1080p screen, so that can't be the hold up. -
Now just need to eliminate i7 820qm and blu-ray as possible holdups but just could be slow production line too.
Thanks. -
If anyone knows of (or can find a) better deal on a 24-25" 1080p monitor than this:
Hannspree HF255HPB 25" Widescreen LCD Monitor | Staples®
Please let me know! It's $200 dollars right now, and it is in stock at my local store. -
like the 2ms response time (and the price for a 24", but the contrast ratio at 800:1 seems pretty low to me. I'd look for one that's at least 1000, don't want muddled blacks and greys in your picture. My 2 cents.
Dell has had some great deals on monitors lately. I almost bought 3x20" monitors for $130 a piece last week. Keep sniffing out discounts. -
-
This is what you need. Tiny bezels. -
thin bezels are nice if you are wanting to do multi-monitor w/ eyefinity
-
@Itarmstrong3
I could have sworn I read a post of someone who received their copy, which included i7 820qm + blu-ray... maybe it was an Australia-only model?
@the people getting anxious to buy an extra 4gb RAM...
Is it necessary? I do quite a bit of graphic/video rendering and multitasking between resource hog apps, and I've yet to reach a limit with 4gb of RAM. Gaming (MW2/C&C4/CrysisWH) doesn't phase it at all (GTA4 is a poorly ported, memory leech, so it makes for a bad example here). Having 25+ tabs of multimedia streaming pages open in my Chrome browser among other open apps (like two CS4 apps and a 720p video playing in background) doesn't eat up too much either (and besides, this would be a rare usage habit anyway). I think you guys should reallocate your resources and save up for a hard drive upgrade, cooling mat, or monitor like someone mentioned.
FYI, there are threads here, Tom's Hardware, and multiple Overclocker forumboards that cover this topic. The general consensus from my observation was that 8gb over 4gb is good, but not necessary for the average computer experience. An extra $100 in your pocket could be better spent.
@Koshinn
Haha, I read an article on Engadget about this. Would be pretty sweet for eyefinity. Actually, screw eyefinity- I want whatever is running this display setup! -
Koshinn,
I saw that yesterday, it's pretty exciting! I want to know why they didn't run a game that would be able to use each and everyone one of those pixels. Maybe it would have been a fire hazard. -
Thanks for the perspective nohm, I think that's a good idea for me.
-
Anyone here want to buy 2GB sticks of RAM? Samsung, same part# as used in the Envy line. Got them for my i7 Envy15, but the 17 only has 2 slots so I don't need them anymore.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/com...32-fs-2x2gb-ddr3-ram-laptops.html#post6329879
Btw, a nice use of RAM is ramdisks. It's fun and useful having transfer rates at nearly a gigabyte/second, or 4x faster than a SATA SSD.. -
For those that purchased this memory to fill out that final dimm from Newegg, take notice that the modules themselves are PC3 10666 not PC3 10600 which is listed in the information.
Patriot Signature 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Laptop Memory Model PSD34G13332S -
The reason is because PC3-10600 has a peak transfer rate of 10667 MB/s, which leads to confusion. -
(Quoted for truth, explanation point.) -
Hi guys, I tried to install a clean copy of Win7 but I had problems backing up the current product key/certificate with ABR. I asked the question here but have not had a response. Does anyone know why ABR is not saving the certificate?
-
Hi,
Is the design of the HP Envy 17 (the flower-like pattern etched into the metal case) more or less the same as the pattern found on the HP Envy 15? Thus, if I go and look at the HP Envy 15 at my local Best Buy, it will be the same pattern as on the HP Envy 17.
In addition, does anyone think that the pattern on these laptops looks a bit too feminine (i.e. flowers)?
Could someone post some close up pictures of just the case?
Thanks! -
Or try this. See "ABR Beta With Windows 7 Support" -
Didn't mean to spark off a big ram debate, just wanted to zero everyone in on a good deal. I only assumed that most people I saw here on this forum that paid an extra $25 to order their envy 17 with only one dimm of 4gb instead of two dimm of 2gb were going to upgrade on their own. I am however very excited about the benifits I am hearing of the boost in performance people here are getting with a hdd swap to ssd. I will definately be ordering one of these. What is the best deal people are seeing on an intel 160gb ssd?
Thanks for your help.
