    What's wrong with flowers?

You should just watch this video:

    YouTube - HP ENVY 17

It shows case detail quite well, though it looks computer generated.

Thankyou, the Beta version indeed works. I now have a cert and product key, now to test a restore.

I believe the design is technically called Paisley. It is a droplet-shaped vegetable motif of Indian and Persian origin, similar to half of the Yin yang symbol.

    The more you know...

EDIT: It used to be a popular design for men's ties. So I would call it gender neutral.

Its Paisley. I like it ok, I wish they would offer a limited edition version of the 17 though. If they ever do I will buy the chasis parts and swap them out later.

Here's an update on my situation:

So I took the laptop down to the service centre last wednesday to get the unbalanced issue sorted.
I call back today (it's Tuesday 12.30pm) to find out what's going on and they tell me they ordered the part and it has an ETA of June 16! That would mean it would take two weeks to fix this wobbly issue - unacceptable in my view.
So at that point I lost the plot and in a rage asked what they were gona do, when I have exams next week and I need a computer right now!
The guy gave me the number for HP escalations and I'm dealing with them currently, pushing for a replacement.

For all those desperatley trying to work out what's causing production delays -all the pre-built ENVY 17's shipped to New Zealand on May 3 were of the same configuration:

    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-820QM Quad Core processor (1.73GHz, 8MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.06 GHz
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (1 Dimm)
    • 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5850 Graphics
    • 17.3" diagonal HD+ HP BrightView Infinity LED Display (1600 x 900)
    • SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam
    • Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    • Full-size island-style backlit keyboard
    • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)
    • No Productivity Software

So as you can see, no Blu-ray ROM or higher resolution screen.

It looks to me like it's the same pattern as on the Envy15. From my experience, the pattern (on the 15) vaguely resembles four-leaf clovers- a little bit tripped out but nonetheless gender neutral. The semi-polish finish of the design elements on the lid will make it appear as if the pattern morphs about from different viewing angles. I think you'll interpret from it what you want to see, but you can rest assure that your manliness will not be questioned. Afterall, you have a 17" Envy...

Haha yea I have to say the pattern and design of the laptop in no way makes me feel emasculated. It's fairly pleasant on the eye and attractive if anything, although like someone else said earlier - Apple products just has THAT mystique about them.

Ordered my laptop on May 24th. Supposed o ship out June 4th. Delayed ship to June 8th and the drama continues. I'm definitely returning it.

First, HP did not send me a ship delay email till tonight. Second, the Amazon deal is loads better.

    And so I wait.

Well, I am also betting on the Amazon deal. It's an unbelievably fantastic deal, even better than the 25% BCB. I seriously hope it comes true. Working out spec for spec, even after factoring the low $100+ 4G RAM price(just purchasing a configured HP with only 4GB RAM and purchasing additional $100+ RAM elsewhere) and purchasing a retail version of the 160GB SSD(for the Amazon version), it still comes out about $152 cheaper for the Amazon version...

I ordered my envy 17 on 5/22 with 10% student discount (no bing), then got some credit the day of the $300 coupon.

It had a predicted delivery date of 6/4, it 'shipped' on 6/1, but only went into transit on 6/3. On 6/4 (Friday) around 2am Fedex delivered it to Newark, NJ which is only an hour away from where I live, and sat on it until today (6/7).

    I got the following upgrades: i7-720qm, 4gb of ram (1 stick), 160gb SSD + 500gb 7200rpm, and 1920x1080 display.

I've had it for about 6 hours now, no problems with the rubber stops, no slowdowns. The left palm rest is slightly warm but completely tolerable. I do have the same high pitched 'morse code' problem that jaxxy has, and lovelaptops' suggestion worked for me as well. I haven't encountered any other hardware-related problems.

Also, imo the keyboard backlight is perfect. When it's dark enough for me to make use of it, I turn it on and the keyboard is lit at the perfect brightness.

Darkchaos - thanks for the reivew. Although I'm now officially addicted to this forum, it's getting old hearing about shipping delays. Nice to hear some actual feedback about the computer from fellow addicts...

Amazon deal is also great, cuz no tax (which is near 10% in NV)

So I am going down to the service centre to retrieve my 17. She's still a bit wobbly, but I'll use it until they get the part in :p They HP manager I spoke to in Wellington said that he's chasing up this bottom enclosure (which will come with five rubber feet) part, god knows where it is, but not in NZ apparently!
BTW for those who care, I have a 3000 word essay due tomorrow, so I'll have to pump that out tonight, as well as exams next week! I needed a laptop days ago!

But I've said this heaps now, in all honesty, I was happy with it, it runs smoothly and performs like it should.

Just ordered it from HP Direct with the 25% BCB. Standard shipping, no upgrades or extras besides the Core i5-520M processor. Total, $90 tax included: ~$1200.

That topic was briefly discussed somewhere between pp50-80, but yeah, I'm pretty sure it had some amount of influence to everything going on with our orders. How could it not? It's still an ongoing issue with the proposed salary raise, and another one pending "performance evaluations" (source: Engadget).

    Give em hell!

I will. I really am happy with my Envy 15 limited. Don't have to buy this new one at all, especially if its such an inconvenience. Will have to sell my newly purchased 160GB SSD and 1TB HD though. But this way I can buy a new iphone or maybe a Dell Streak next month.

I am in love with you for hearing that!! What is the windows index experience? How do you like the sound? I am strongly considering this or a lenovo.. but I need some more informative reviews to really make my decision. Also what was the final price you paid for the laptop? Thanks.

Thanks for your post. Are you going to live with the 'microphone fix' for the noise issue or are you going to try to get a replacement unit?

I'm happy that it's not just me (but not happy that you have the issue) as up till now, I am the only one who can actually hear this noise!

So just to be clear Bing Cash Back works with the HP envy 17 if you go through the bing cash back website? How do you know for sure you are going to get money back and if so how much? I've never used this before but it seems almost too good to be true :D

Yes. Just follow the instructions posted on the slickdeals thread to enter the HP online store WITH the BCB activated. You should be seeing a login process into HP's site via BCB. You'll also see a "25% cashback" indicator during that login process. Once you're in, go configure your Envy 17, add to cart, and finish your checkout process. Throughout the process, you will not be seeing anything related to Bing or BCB, but don't panic. Once you finished processing your order, you'll receive an email from Bing within a few minutes, confirming that you've made a purchase using cashback. You can then proceed to log in to your Bing account to verify the amount you're eligible to receive (should be 25% of your notebook cost BEFORE taxes+shipping). Please take note that your cashback won't automatically be available- you need to wait 90 days for them to clear that amount for you. So, BCB is great, but you need to wait a few months for the cash to get back into your hands. If you're not comfortable with your potential money floating around the internet, then...

like mobilezila has been stating, you can go for the Amazon deal if that configuration fits your needs. You don't need to deal with floating money and you'll actually save a couple hundred bucks. Choose whichever method works best for you.

    Btw, are you a snowboarder?

In my opinion, the windows experience index doesn't mean much, but here are the scores:

    Processor: 7.1
    RAM: 5.9
    Graphics: 7.0
    Gaming Graphics: 7.0
    Primary Hard Disk: 7.6

The speakers are great. They're the best laptop speakers that I've personally heard - similar volume but more detail than my MBP 17" from 2007, which in turn is far better than 15" MBPs (including unibodies). However, I haven't had the chance to hear what a typical gaming laptop with a subwoofer sounds like, so I can't make that comparison. Also, it seems the subwoofer is on the right side, so it was a little unbalanced at first, but I got used to that.

I paid about $2100 including around 7% tax.

I haven't had the chance to read up on the Sony F series issue, on whether or not replacements worked, on whether or not it's a manufacturing defect - I'd like to ascertain the chances of a replacement actually working. If a lot of people start experiencing it here and it's a manufacturing defect, I think I'd want to wait a while for hp to sort it out.

If after a lot of people get their orders and no one else besides us has a problem, I'd go for a replacement, hoping that it's a rare problem and replacements will work.

But right now, there just aren't enough reports for me to tell, and I can definitely live with the microphone fix for now (right now I have the mic unmuted, with listen on to Virtual Audio Cable, so the mic still works). I wish you the best of luck in getting a perfect replacement though! Hopefully that doesn't take long for you, since you have a prebuilt configuration. I'm guessing replacing mine would take 2 weeks, and if HP wanted to fix it, it would come back with some scruff marks at minimum, so I'm kind of reluctant to just ask for a replacement now.

Is anyone familiar with how long HP takes to replace a new custom order laptop?

Yesterday I called HP Customer Support in an attempt to discover why others who ordered an identical config after I did have received shipment notifications but I had not. It was a comical call. Read from script. Me patiently explain situation in detail. Place on hold. Read from script. Me explain again. Place on hold again. Then read from the delay email we all received last week. Me explain again. Recite several times that others have problem also. Repeat same sequence several times. I finally say "You don't have any more information than I do." Answer, "Well yes. But give HP 24 hours."

Perhaps the best part was my explaining that due to HPs repeated delays it now appears likely that the machine will be delivered next week while I am out of the country and there is no one to receive it. The answer was that I needn't worry, after three delivery attempts FedEx will return it to HP and I will get full credit.

Of course this morning I now get the "your machine has shipped" email and when I check the FedEx link it says simply that shipping info has been sent to FedEx. Hasn't even left the factory. And it says it will be delivered to my house by Fri at 4:30.

I am now expecting the follow-on email that offers to sell me a (lightly refurbed) bridge at a promo price.

Today is my est. build by/ship date, expecting a delay email any minute now....

Not that big of a deal really to have a few days delay, i just have nothing else to do this week but constantly check my status and you know what they say about idle hands.

Just wondering though if anyone has had multiple stacked delays, I will let ya'll know if my build gets delayed today.

Yeah I saw the Amazon deals but was looking at the Bing. Ill probably just end up going with Amazon but we'll see. If it takes 90 days for them to process and the program ends in July does that mean I could possibly loose all of the money if they don't process it by July? It seems risky. Thanks.

Oh and how did people get a $300 coupon?

And yeah I snowboard. How come?

Actually it's only 60 days until you recieve your money in your account. If you read this article: Microsoft to Shut Down Bing Cashback - CIO.com - Business Technology Leadership it will tell you that you have a year past July 30th to collect your money from your account. It's Microsoft they will keep support for that year, I wouldn't worry about it.

Just to let you know, I called HP and made it all the way up too a Manager. Seems they will give you up too 200 dollars back if you mention the Amazon pricing (but they will keep telling you they cant "match" Amazons' prices, but can give you as much as 200 to compromise. Which if you ask me added into the fact that some of us got the 25% BCB makes it a rather worthwhile purchase. That and a military discount comes out to a cool 1470 (including tax). Good luck

This is exciting. My Amazon "estimated arrival date" says between the 17th-24th of June.

Does anyone believe this to be true? Or will I be SoL when that date comes by?

Thanks a bunch, I will definitely use this tonight.

My order finally moved to "shipped" status. I ordered the 19th, fairly basic unit, estimated to ship on the 1st, delayed to the 5th, "shipped" email in the last minutes of the 7th, and today (the 8th) tracking info simply says "shipping information sent to fedex." Just updated, it now estimates delivery on the 15th (last night it showed the 11th).

I feel obligated now to complain to someone at HP. Will work for the above deal, and honestly, if I can't get it, this thing is getting returned. If I like it, returned for the amazon deal, if not, for something else.

I'm curious though, does anyone know:

    a) If returns through HP incur a fee (restocking fee, etc.)? Reading through the return policy I haven't seen anything yet, so it looks like it would be essentially a free return (since shipping was free), but I could very easily have missed something or not looked in depth enough.

    b) How BCB works with "bill me later"? The bill me later feature says you can pay off up to 6 months past the purchase date without interest AFAIK, but BCB demands confirmation of payment from HP after 60 days, correct? I've heard on this forum in general that BCB works with Bill me later, which so far seems to be the case, but what happens if I haven't made the full payment to Bill me later by the time BCB does their check? Anyone have experience or thoughts on this? I'm planning to pay in the 4th-5th month, not the 2nd to satiate BCB.

Great! Thanks for your reply. I would be very interested to find out if you finally did receive the laptop with the specs as listed; 8GB RAM, Blue Ray, Dual 320HDDs, Ultra bright 1920x1080 screen, and dual batts.

If you did, than that's going to be one super awesome deal.

Was this site down today? Having troubles getting on this site late morning and afternoon?

Read the posts saying Amazon had a better deal. I saw one preorder that was not my preffered options. I assume that was the great deal. The other items on Amazon directed you to HP direct site and appeared to be the usual pricing.

I opted for the 25% bcb discount instead. I think I use the bing corrrectly. Signed in and was directed to hp site by Bing. However I did not get any bing confirmation within a few hours. The bing site said it could take a few days or something to that effect.

Yep, I was having troubles with the forum too. Seems like I still can't access parts of it.

I got my BCB confirmation email within a few minutes of ordering. Did you create a Bing account and everything?

Yes, I set up one a while back. I logged into it and it had my name said HI neil and directed me to hp site. It said it would take a minute or so and there I went?

Can I call Bing on the phone?

Yes, you could try calling them if you don't get the email soon. Did you take screenshots of the logging-in screen with 25% CB message, order confirmation, etc.?

I used the $300 dollar coupon off of logicbuy.com, it was only good from May 26-28. The coupon from there is now only $50 off but keep checking because one hour before I made my first order on the 26th it popped up!

for anyone enterested in the $50 coupon, you can find it here:

Exclusive $50 Coupon for HP ENVY 17 Core i5 or Core i7 Laptop - LogicBUY

I went on Bing couldn't find info for my accout so I had to "google" bing my account to access my account info. It said wait 48 hours before filling out form. So I will wait I guess. I checked my @live.com email account [which I never use] for an email, thinking maybe it went there. I didn't get a message there.

I guess I will have to wait 48 hours. This bing shopping isn't so simple no wonder they are discountinuing it.

NO, I didn't take a screen shot. I do have all the confirmations from hp. Not worth being paranoid about it. Either bing honors it when I send them the info or I cancel with HP. My philosophy is there is always another deal in the future especially with pcs which go out of date evry 6 months..
