Just thought it is good to report that the Envy 17 has just become available to purchase direct from HP UK for £ 1299.
HP Envy 17-1000 Notebook PC series overview - HP Home & Home Office products
-
I'm also coming from a MBP 17 and I found the off-center keyboard strange at first. After a few days I got used to it.
-
I'm just about to pull the trigger and buy the HP ENVY 17 with the FHD screen and 9 cell battery, but people are already talking about the Gen2?
Well, I have a month or two to wait, would you advise me to hold off and wait for the Gen2 or go ahead and Get the Gen1.
Fan noise is not really an issue for me but over heating is a slightly bigger problem
So what do you think? -
I don't think Gen2 has been confirmed.
I believe someone in NZ said they were told they're getting a "Gen2" to replace their wobbly E17.
Is is possible that "Gen2" refers to a software/bios upgrade rather than a hardware/structural change?
I doubt HP would put out a product with a life cycle of just a few months.
The E17 was supposed to build on what they've learned from the E15. The E15 gen1 was around for much longer before it received a refresh... no? -
Agree. I think the folks in Oz/NZ are getting a different pre-built config as their replacement. CTO is not available there.
-
What does CTO mean?
-
Customized to order or configured to order.
-
I highly doubt that the Gen2 has any hardware changes. If you compare the Envy 17 configuration, software bundle, and pricing scheme, it is very different from what was offered before. Furthermore, I think Gen2 is merely referring to a different prebuilt configuration for non-U.S. customers.
@Kiwi_style
Did HP offer you the SSD/mounting kit or did you ask for it? They've given me a lot of trouble too. I canceled my replacement and reordered because the prices were about $350 lower than what I had with my $300 off coupon. If this Envy 17 has any problems, I am going to be seriously pissed. Oh well, we shall see.
The irony is that my reorder is supposed to ship 3 days sooner than my replacement. Shows how much they care about exchanges. Shame on you HP. -
hey guys. I have a friend I'm trying to steer towards the Envy 17.
what kind of battery life are you guys getting in real-world scenarios (not advertised BS)?
the difference in speed between i5 and i7 is insignificant in all but a handful of usages (transcoding, encoding video or audio to be specific).
your comparison of an i5 to a single core processor is not only wrong, it's hyperbole. do us all a favor and take your own advice: keep bad opinions to yourself. -
i5 does not equal a Core 2 Duo. You obviously can't understand English. And I ask you, what's wrong with 4:2 = 2:1? You are admitting that the i7 is faster than the i5, and there are some of us who need the extra power in "transcoding, encoding video or audio."
-
Yes this bothers me as I like to be ergonomic and I am always aware of my body position/posture. But since I have now got a laptop cooler/stand it's no longer an issue
BTW, like Kiwi_Style I am also waiting for my 3rd Envy17, it's ETA is tomorrow but I have not received anything from HP to say that it's shipped so who knows when I will get it. -
Check the reviews on the first page, I'm pretty sure some people have reported some battery life numbers.
-
i ordered my envy last Sunday and i was supposed to receive a tracking number today and still nothing in my email...is this an all too familiar situation with everyone's orders? I dont understand why it takes this long to build and ship....you can configure a dell (not that id want one because their quality has plummeted through the years) but the point is say you order one Monday, you'll have it by like Thursday or Friday... sometimes sooner! Are these things built in china or something lol?
-
My Envy 17 is finally here waiting at the FedEx facility for pick up tomorrow. For those interested it took 33 days from order to delivery. For some reason my Envy went straight from Shanghai to Memphis instead of Alaska and only took 4 1/2 hours to get Intl' Ship release and ship out of Memphis, maybe because of my location on the Texas-Louisiana border, just thought it worth mentioning. oh wow so this is built and shipped from china! thanks for the shipment/tracking information. thats definitely useful! but wow it took a month to get this unit!? that's insane...i wonder why it takes that long lol.. i just hope its as premium as they advertise! lol
-
dang, did you get any sort of compensation after the 10%?? i've had mine for about a week.

Hello Envy 17 owners, I am facing some trouble here that maybe you guys can give me some opinion? Based on what you guys currently experience from the Envy 17.
So here's the thing, I had been trying to get my hands on one of these Envy 17 since the day it was out, but since I live in Canada I can't customize the Envy 17 directly from HP (they don't ship to Canada) eBay resellers are just rip-offs and so the only option I am left with are retailers.
First off, I am going to use the Envy 17 for some intensive work, such as video decoding/encoding/conversions, play some intensive games and I would like it to be able to multitask intensely while enjoying a 1080p movie smoothly.
With the Canadian model of the Envy 17 (1090ca), it features:
Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/ Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz
8GB DDR3 RAM
1TB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (500GB x 2)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 w/1GB GDDR5 VRAM
17.3" HD+ HP BrightView Infinity LED Display (1600 x 900)
Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
For this model, it costs around $1718.23USD (before 13% tax) I don't really like the fact that it comes with a 900p screen but contradictorily with a Blu-ray drive. How can you watch Full HD 1080p Blu-ray movie with the 900p screen? (except for connecting it to the tv that is...)
I am also not sure if the i7-720QM is powerful enough? as I was looking more for the i7-840QM...
I can also get my friend to get me the Hong Kong model (1018tx), which has every spec max. out with Windows 7 Professional, the 1080p screen and i7-840QM that the Canadian model doesn't have. It costs around $2439.12USD, but I am not sure about all the custom and import stuff so yeah...
Which one would you suggest me to purchase? How much more, in terms of performance does the 840QM outperforms the 720QM? Are there any owners of these processors that can give me some comment on how they actually perform? (start up speed, how much webpage they can open without lagging, multitasking, etc)
Thanks in advance, and I hope that I too can become a proud owner of Envy 17 soon!
-
I don't think i5s will be back on the 17. Think about it. If they did that, they would have to drop the starting price below 1399, which would make it similar in price to the 15, which doesn't even have an onboard optical drive. I just don't see that happening...
-
okay, so 2-3 hours sound about right?
-
Not even when Intel refreshes their i5/i7 lineup this fall with 560 and 580's?
I ordered my i5-540 with the 25% BCB just days before the i5's were pulled and BCB was lifted to 10%. I'm still not sure what I want to do here. I guess I'll wait for my scheduled to ship on Jul 9th unit.
If the heat is as bad as everyone says it is, then I'm paying a premium to own a slower, cooler unit with more battery life. If however, the heat is under control, which I won't know because I didn't order am i7 spec, then I just overpaid for the unit.
First I had to make decisions over what turned out to be a dim Vaio F12 and now I'm agonizing over heat and pricing.
Sigh.
I just want to be watching The Bourne Identity in blueray already, filing some weekend photos in Lightroom during the slow parts. -
I don't own an ENVY17, but from all the comments I read, this seems very unlikely (at least with the 6 cell), I think 1.5-2 hours would be more realistic (under very low to no load).
Btw., how do you like your MBP? And why did you opt for it instead of the ENVY? -
No I demanded it. They are still confirming the ship date for the 1019tx. It will be nearly 7 weeks since I got the first one.
-
Sounds about right.
-
Where in Hong Kong is your friend going to get the Envy 17 do you have a link?
-
why don't you just order it from Amazon?
-
Amazon orders are taking a while to get fulfilled based on when you ordered.
-
This is addresssed to those who ordered with 25% Bing CB before the recent price drop and are concerned that having HP adjust your order will cause the BCB to be cancelled. Here is an excerpt of the email I sent to Bing support.
Here is the salient portion of their reply.
As I read this, they are saying the the BCB 25% is still valid but it will be applied to the adjusted price instead o f the original rice. This is more than fair and essentially means that we get the 25% off the *new* prices. Screamin' deal! -
Although I am getting some more info about the 1019tx specs, and it appears as though it has dual 640GB drives so no need for the hard drive kit now. But HP will still provide me with the 160GB SSD.

Gonna whine for just a few seconds: why are people so concerned about the battery life? This is a premium machine designed to be a desktop replacement, aka have the power of a desktop with the "option" for mobility. It was not designed to be taken to the classroom or lugged around the world to be be used for hours on end.
The beauty of a desktop replacement is, whenever you NEED to move it, you can. I for one would never want to lug this thing around anywhere, let alone have it sit in my lap. I know my machine will almost never leave the desk, as I have a second laptop that I use for work/travel.
Just seems strange to care about battery life in a desktop replacement.
Sidenote: If the MBP used a quad-core processor and an equivalent g-card, it would not have great battery life either. -
It's just nice to have the option for more battery life, like the envy 15 has for example. Maybe we don't "need" it but it's definitely nice to have all of that-power, performance, slim form factor, and long battery life.
I hear what you are saying, but
I remember when cell phones couldn't play mp3's, and people were saying 'i don't understand why you need that/whine about it' if you want to play mp3's just by an mp3 player. Then they said you don't 'need' a camera on you phone, just buy a camera... Do you see where I'm going here? Now I have a phone that does all that, and even takes good video and browses the web and a lot more.. Maybe I don't "Need" it, but it sure is nice.
Maybe you think asking for light weight long battery life in a powerful desktop replacement is too much to ask for, but i don't, and if HP isn't the company to do it, someone else will eventually. They already did it pretty well with the envy 15, so it doesn't make sense that they didn't do it with the 17. Even if the envy 17 had a 3lb slice, it would still weight less than an alienware, and barely more than some of the sagers, and have almost the same amount of power but 5x the battery life. Maybe you are a small person and that is too heavy for you, but it would be fine for me. I was carrying around bags of books heavier than that in gradeschool... -
Just get the 9-cell battery, it'll help you with less heat (more air flow), and will give you a much longer battery life. We're looking at maybe 2-3 hours of battery life, although I'm not quite sure. But pviola01's point is legit.
-
It was announced last week that the Envy 17 is coming out in Hong Kong. But it is out right now, two models, Envy 17-1013tx, and Envy 17-1018tx along with the Envy 14-1006tx. The 1018tx model cost $18,980HKD, which is around $2436USD.
I have a link to the website, it's from a HK forum and in traditional chinese though, not sure if you can comprehend... Anyway I will provide you with a translated link as well
Translated Link: http://www.microsofttranslator.com/...w.eprice.com.hk/nb/talk/?prod_id=905&tid=1172
Original Link: http://www.eprice.com.hk/nb/talk/?prod_id=905&tid=1172
If you scroll down, you should be able to see a chart with the spec of both models of the Envy 17s
Because Amazon.com doesn't ship to Canada and the local Amazon, Amazon.ca only have the Canadian version of the Envy 17, which features spec I dislike. -
Just Picked up my Envy 17 today from FedEx, currently burning my recovery disks and so far I am impressed. Very sharp build no noticable gaps a slight wobble but I am going to shim up the rear left foot myself by removing the rubber foot and inserting a thin metal washer in between and re-adhere it with a heat resistant adhesive (not going to wait for a replacement for such a small and easily fixed defect). During the first half of burning recovery disks I had the Envy 17 flat on a glass top desk and yes it did put out some high heat, but then I put it on the VIZO Ninja HS Notebook Cooler I purchased with the variable adjustment fans to ram air directly into the notebooks fan intake vent and man, it cooled it down immensly!!! Before the Envy's output vent put out a lot of heat and the back left corner of the laptop was getting quite hot, but after I put it on the Vizo cooler it is only warm to the touch on the vent output and barely warm on the back left corner!!! DO NOT return your envy if heat is your main concern. Get you one of these coolers, I HIGHLY recomend it. I have found only one distributer online that carries it, they sell it on amazon and Ebay. They told me on the phone that they have ~35 in stock so you may want to jump on this before they sell out after this post. Palm rest is still noticably warm but not hot and after placement on cooler palm rest over 500GB hhd is now warmer than vent output if that tells you how much cooler this notebook cooler made it. I will be swapping the 500GB hdd primary with 160GB ssd now and I will report back how much of a heat difference that made. Oh almost forgot, here are the two links:
VIZO Ninja HS Notebook Cooler w/ USB 2.0 Hub - eBay (item 260422324214 end time Jul-28-10 11:25:52 PDT)
Amazon.com: Used and New: VIZO Ninja HS (NCL-251-BK) Black Aluminum Notebook Cooler w/ Built-in 3 Port USB Hub - For 7 inches ~ 15.4 inches Widescreen Notebook
They are the same distributor on Amazon and Ebay ( dont pay attention to the notebook dimension on the amazon discription, it is good for up to a 17 inch notebook as on the actual box listed on ebay) -
Make sure you pick up the new BIOS update from the DRIVERS link on the OP. Also improves the cooling by upping fan thresholds.
-
@Itarmstrong3
Can you post some pictures of your Envy 17 on the Ninja HS cooler?
Thanks! -
The US Amazon doesn't have many options either but I am using it to send overseas thro a US mail forwarding co. The HP service support sucks in US when dealing with outsiders and the HP prices and choices offshore are extortionate. I don't care for the Amazon spec, but it will still be cheaper to receive it and reconfig to my liking (buy SSD etc) than using HP direct.

hi
i understand the mini display port on the HP Envy 17" supports 2560x1600 ?
what about the HDMI 1.3c port next to it? does it also support 2560x1600 ?
what i'm trying to find out is whether this model can drive two 30" monitors at super high resolution -
Ok so now HP are going to offer me a 1007-TX replacement which is an Australian model. The best thing is it's nearly totally maxed out and costs NZ$2000 more (that's US$1300) than what I paid for my 1006-TX. And nothing like this is avaliable in NZ. It's brand-new from factory.
It's configured as follows:
Core i7 820QM
2TB hard drive
8GB ram
1920x1080 display
BD ROM
And they will also give me a 160GB SSD as part of the offer.
Jaxxy you should ask for one of these! I spoke to the guy in Australia just now and he said there are only 3 of them in the warehouse, so I am going to get my resolutions case manager to order it quick-smart tomorrow before they change their minds! -
I am glad that HP is trying its best to make amends for their poor manufacturing. Can you also get me one???
-
Hello, I don't have an envy17, but can someone please tell me if it has options for manually overclocking the CPU and RAM in the BIOS? Such as upping the vcore, uncore, and all that. -- Who makes the BIOS, phoenix, award, etc?
Have any real severe problems or design issues come up that affect a large number of envy17 units?
Thanks -
w00t!

I ordered on June 5... but hopefully you'll get yours soon too.
-
You will be perhaps one of the first to receive their Envy from Amazon.
Could you please write a review. If it does come with the Blue Ray and Extra Battery slice.
Keeping my fingers crossed that we won't have the same issues that others have posted. Since it has been over a month now since the release. Hopefully the plant in China has improved on the quality control. -
Mine is i guess final phase of shipping. hopefully will be shipped by end of today.
my order was updated by Amazon as shown below.

Hi, I am hoping to order my envy some time next week. I spoke with George at Amazon (very helpful) to confirm whether or not the blu-ray drive and the extras come with the PC (17-1011NR). He assured me that they do. I pointed out that I had read the one review on there talking about the pricing and how when on the hp website customizing the same pc without adding the blu ray, it came out to the price on the amazon site.
I told him that they should look into that because it could be confusing at first and the guy had a valid point. Rest assured that what you see on that Datasheet pdf is what you are getting.
I am wondering if there is any huge differences in the 720 - 820 qm. Im on the fence right now because I need something that can handle 3D and the Creative suites with no problem. Tax here is crazy so im really trying to find justification in customizing it from hp and paying the 10%
. Hopefully they come out with another coupon that wipes that out. Onto the research..........
-
That is great news!
-
I received a similar email today. "Expected delivery date July 6, 2010" I ordered on June 6.
Original arrival date was July 15-22 -
Has anyone heard anything about whether or not there will ever be a matte screen option for the envy 17?
