GTA IV will never win awards for good coding. It is possible. What kind of framerates do you get when you benchmark it. There is a benchmark tool in the game....look in the setup menu. Just checked my settings on my desktop card GTX580...try shadows on medium...

I'm very happy for you guys that they finally made a fix, and I really envy (no pun intended) the looks on your sexy laptops, but I have no regrets going to the dark side :)

Been awesome troubleshooting with you all though, there's some great people in here :)

I still have minor throttle as I did before. But only when things get too hot. So I don't mind. BIOS didn't seem to do much here, except coolsense 2.0 works on auto now. :D

You nailed it, again! Despite closing Realtemp, there were 2 instances of Realtemp still running in task manager. I'll have to be more careful to double check and make sure the program is really stopped even though I already closed the interface.

    Thanks.

Thats some great news to hear for you HP owners, hopefully Asus will roll out a new bios soon as well, I haven't really been in good contact with anyone at Asus, but after seeing how quick HP solved it, maybe its time I try harder to get/keep in contact with someone about it.

I just played Dirt 2 for a while in 3d with Bios F.15.

With coolsense on there was a couple of stutters that made it a little hard to play. With coolsense off there was only one, very brief, and it doesn't even show up in the logs (almost felt as though something in the background just took resources for a fraction of a second or something).

Temps with coolsense on stayed around 70-71* for both. With coolsense off, both peaked in mid-80s (higher than they were before the update). So the new bios is definitely allowing my computer to run a little hotter than before, but it's definitely not throttling. I need to watch more, but it looked like it did throttle some in the logs with coolsense turned on.

Of course, I didn't even start Throttlestop during this test.

Looks like HP really did it. I'm a very satisfied Envy 17 3d customer. I was happy before, but now that this is fixed, I think this is the best overall (appearance, raw performance, gaming, design, etc) computer available.

That might be your issue. A few posted here that Coolsense 2.0 is horrible and will make your throttle even worse!!! You will need to delete 2.0 and get the 1.0...verions. That should help. :)

Is it just me or does the new BIOS update seem to help cut down the start-up time by several seconds. My machine now feels like it starts up way faster.

Oh ouch I hope it isn't a problem, but it's the same BIOS on all Envy 17's right? It's not specific for which model it is it can't be, right?

    Hello Everyone !

First off, thank you for the wonderful ENVY information on this forum. I'm a new member.... been lurking for a while, but just started posting, so please go easy on me :)

I've wanted to purchase an ENVY for about 2 months, but was concerned about the throttling issue, and the lack of 7200rpm hard drives. Now that both issues are resolved, I'm ready to make a purchase.

I've recently read about $400 off deals, and I think there were some 33% off deals (I could be wrong about that one). Can you share with me if anything is currently available, and where is the best place to keep checking for coupon codes.

Thanks very much in advance !

Thanks Mirre OKay now there are two up dates on the site one is F.08 and the other one is F.15, F.15 is the new one but do I have to up date F.08 before I up date F.15? Just downloading it and running it like a normal up date will up date my BIOS right?

Finally got my envy today! :)
I'm wondering, what software do you use for measuring GPU temperature? I tried downloading the latest GPU-Z but it didn't show any information under sensor tab. Tried HWmonitor and it didn't show GPU temp at all. Thx guys

Hi, welcome, officialy, to the forum! As far as deals for the envy are concerned, I think the envy 14 is the only one that has a coupon code right now. You can always call in and see what kind of deal HP might be able to give you. If your interested, I'm selling an envy 17 that's been used for a max of 3 hours. Its also listed in the market place.

Nothing, my laptop would be on idle and it would just receive a BSOD and automatically reboot. It seemed to happen more often when I gamed on it. It would usually happen during the night.

KJ. I also started in November, received first unit in Dec and am having what I hope to be a final unit coming next Thursday. Lots of whacky things happened in-between. Where is cool sense one online? I Was the first to post yesterday about the bios 15 update for 3 diff versions of envy 17. When looking at bios updates I could only see cool sense 2 on hp site for one or two of the model numbers. The other one or two didn't have any cool sense version associated at all on their driver update pages. Can you give me the scoop. For light use I was diggin' the major improvement in reduced heat compared to first unit from last Dec timeframe. Sounds like the new bios/cool sense don't bring all the heat back but might as well download it now for back pocket in case it can't be found later.

Do you have link to cool sense 1? I figured original install version might not be available online since it's not an "update", being the first version.

BTW. I have 3 sets of recovery discs from 2 or 3 diff versions of Envy with SSD,maxed out options all around. Not sure any will be entirely useful for use with newest unit coming.

Look under model 17t-2000 and you will find a version of HP Support Assistant that was released in April 2011. Coolsense 1 is part of Support Assistant...Look under Utility-Tools

hey im thinking of buying this laptop, but i need to know a couple things:

one, how hard would it be to get the drivers and beats audio software for the Envy 17 if you were to clean install windows

two, how would linux operating systems (ubuntu, opensuse) work on it (and if there are any problems, how hard would it be to fix them?)

three, how does the heat and battery life on the sandy bridge envy compare to the heat and battery of the last gen envy 17 (both the 6 and 9 cell)

four, is the screen really that much different between the envy 17 3d and the envy 17 non-3d?

and last, is SATA 3 supported? and can you fit the larger of the 2.5" hard drives in it like the 1tb Western Digital one?

Okay I think I have a question, I do believe I have now twice seen small white stripes flashed like really fast on my screen, both times in firefox once I think yesterday and now today. What can that be? I never saw it before, it goes so fast but I swear it was white thin lines flashing super fast on the screen.

it might just be firefox trying to load its gui. it happens to me too on linux sometimes. its probably because it uses a different gui toolkit than most other windows apps and it is just loading the gui toolkit and such. does it happen in thunderbird too (both firefox and thunderbird use the same gui toolkit)

I only use Firefox, and I haven't seen those lines in any game, or movie, or just on the desktop, just twice in Firefox, once when I was typing here and now today when I was checking a site on Sims info. I hope it's just firefox I really don't want anything to be bad with the screen!

Do you also get small white lines? It goes so fast that I had to ask myself did I just see those, so it's a really fast process so to say.

Yea but the hole sending it to them, getting it replaced really cuts me off, I hate doing that cos mostly the things you get back are more damaged then fixed, that's my experience (not with HP maybe) But everything else.

Hey guys, which screen is better: the envy 17 3D 1080p, or the Dell XPS 17 1080p? I've heard they're one and the same (same part number). Is that true? The screen is the selling point for me in deciding which laptop to buy.
