yay thats a good one bobmitch. FYI the HP spec for stuck pixels (for the FHD panels) is as follows:
1. the display is unacceptable if there are two or more pixels within 25mm of each other that are stuck "on" (in any color)
2. the display is unacceptable if there are eight or more pixels anywhere on the panel, in any combination or color, stuck on or off.
HP uses the term "dot" to refer the individual R/G/B component of a picture element (pixel), i.e. when we use the term "pixel is stuck red" HP would say that the red dot is stuck on.
-
That makes it a 17t-2100 CTO
-
A couple of different apps could help cure the problem, too:
Pixel Exerciser - Identify and Fix stuck pixels on your LCD screen
Imaging Associates | The Quick 'n' Easy Online Stuck Pixel Exerciser - LCD, Dead Pixels, Stuck Pixels, CRT screen burn, Java Applets, Onine Utilities -
Of course if its within the 21 days of ownership you can still send it back even with half a dead pixel, lol.
KJ
-
Did you get the correct SDD / HDD combo?
-
indeed! just to make light of HP's distinction of "dot" versus "pixel" I guess a stuck red pixel, for example would be a third of a pixel, lol
BTW congratulations KJ on the new Envy and also professional changes! -
I would imagine so. I'm going by what Andy told me and by the Shippment sheet specs. I'll know for sure Tomorrow night. Can't wait.
Also dlleno, thanks for the kind words.

Awesome! I'll try this out on my machine! -
Who wants to be the first one to try a 8gb sodimm in their 2xxx envy and see if it works? I was going to try to but all of my searches turned up out of stock ones and this laughable find on hp's site.
-
Just received 2100 LQ621AV's, mine being LQ and jgt fz6's being a LM. Mine also configuration to orders: 8gb, 2820, ssd/hdd combo.
-
Killa Joe and jgt_fz6. Did your 2100 model replacements come without the sd card previously included on the black envelope by the silica pack when you first open box? I had 2 units shipped and neither included. Either deleted or mistakenly left out. Not sure.
-
My first unit (2000 series) had the SD Card (with manual on it). The replacement unit (2100) did not have the SD Card.
-
About the 9 cell battery life; I'm getting about 5.5 hours out of mine with the wifi on and screen brightness at 30%.
I would hope others are getting something near this; oh yes and I have the SSD 160G drive. -
Holy batman, $1999. !!!!
-
If you guys can confirm, but I think mine is the 2000.... my product is: XW930AV.... so I think if its the 2000 and I just got it yesterday, they must have had it built a while ago before the 2100 came out and just sat in the wharehouse....
I'm sure once I boot her up tomorrow we will know for sure, but by the spec sheet, looks like the previous model...
I have the SD card, so it must be the 2000 series...you guys with the 2100 probably have the manual already installed in the laptop, or HP just cut the SD out and will have you download from their site...

I thought you were kidding, WTH>>@>$2$>@> I just clicked and its true!!!! What exactely will this 2 grand ram to that our 8GB ram will not?

One thing I'd love to see a ClickPad be able to do: imitate a 3-button touchpad. Sure, you can press left+right to get middle, with "HasBothButtonFeature"... But how do you give a game the left and right at the same time? Or better yet, middle and right?
I'm still "window-shopping" between this (once the ClickPad is upgraded), the 8560w/8760w, or simply waiting another year for Ivy Bridge (since I have no true NEED for anything new now). If only I could get a hybrid that combines them...
EDIT: by "imitate", I mean it'd have three marked button regions. Left, middle, right. -
XW930AV is a 17t-2000CTO. You should have Windows 7 Home Premium w/o SP1 and Coolsense 1
-
There you go...$1600 for the laptop and $2000 for the memory...WOW!
-
yeah, mine is 2100 CTO LM model...don't get any SD card either.
-
Actually, i'm pretty sure that was just one dimm they were selling for 2k lol -- i found a 16gb pack for macbooks that is 2 8gb sticks for 1650, still crazy expensive.
-
$2K is funny. At least they included a footnote about pricing errors
As much as the 8GB sticks themseves are notconsidered newsworthy (every one knows they are emerging) I still think the good news is that HP intends to support them in the Envy 17, even on the 21xx models for after market upgrades. Kingston even confirmed HP is testing.
and we should see pricing come down (and errors go away lol) -
yea well $2k is crazy lol... and 16 gb just seems like overkill... does anyone really need that much....
-
Actually.. i Probably would go for it if it was a reasonable price --> I have been using vmware for a while now on my desktop because i could cheaply load it with ram, Now i have been using vmware workstation on my envy alot lately to isolate my development environments and it would be nice to replicate a production environment on my laptop (4x servers), the only real limit in that case would be ram consumption, and i could pull it off easily with 16gb -- i suppose you could say i am not the typical case however
-
yea I'm waiting too. This is just my opinion of course, but I think Apple already stole the show and now the world wants an Apple touchpad -like experience. For better or for worse, thats the market demand. I suspect that there are a pile of patents in this space owned by Apple, and that the reason Synaptics is behind is that they've been tripping over patents, all the while trying to innovate in this space.
Anyway I suspect for a flagship consumer laptop I think we'll continue to see Apple-like things with some Synaptics innovations thrown in where possible. So I don't think we'll see three marked button regions, but I do expect to see multiple-finger gestures taken to the next level. For example, even with the present hardware, folks are liking the new Synaptics Scrybe capability. Additionaly, Synaptics themselves is pushing the envelope, in spite of the Apple legal machine (remember this is the company that tried to patent the mouse concept that they stole from Xerox).
I'm not close to the gaming scene or industry trends there, but it seems natural to me that touchpad gaming will also imitate Apple as well. Im not seeing alot of industry leadership there, or any standards emerging as regards building an acceptable experience in touchpad game control. Are there any? I suspect this may be due to market demand -- there isn't much.
Im keeping an eye on the Envy 14 refresh, announced for June 15, and the new "HP imagepad" there. To me, "imagepad" is an oblique reference to Synaptics Image Sensing (IS) technology (which by the way has nothing to do with optical sensors). I'm also assuming here that HP is sticking with Synaptics. Anyway, looking over the IS options from Synaptics I see "IS 3.0", but that is a complete solution which for some reason I don't see HP using. Synaptics IS 1.5 (click on "how to design-in a clickpad") seems more in line with what HP would do, giving them the flexibility to give it a name, and to own more of the mechanical design. -
true enough, and by the time I purchase (targeting the fall release if the clickpad is updated and pending the success of the Envy 14 imagepad) I'll probably opt for 8GB as well, avoiding 16GB because of the price.
16 GB would probably benefit serious gaming (witness the Alienware), but even here I suspect that an SSD solution may mitigate the need for that much RAM. Serious video editing might be another use case for lots of RAM, along with some other amusing corner cases like running mulitple virtual machines.
I have a fairely large photo collection (about 15,000 photos)
in a single Adobe Lightroom catalog, which contains all of the editing calcuations as well. Just the lightroom process by itself takes over 1GB, without working on new photos, and my 2GB system already pages 2GB to the disk as it is. So I will make fairly good use of 8GB. my dilemma will be the fact that there are only two slots and I can't just add 8 more GB.
I'm anxious to see some reports from the SSD guys here -- to max out RAM utilization and start paging to the SSD. thats gotta be a whole lot faster than paging to a piece of spinning aluminum! -
whats weird to me is that HP hasn't posted the right manual out there yet for the 21xxx. They still have the 20xx manual associated with the 21xx product.
-
It almost seems like the manual may not have been quite ready when they shipped these new units (which would also help explain why the SD Card may have been omitted from these early 21XX units).
The recovery disk set was also not available with my 21XX replacement unit (it was part of my initial order). -
So I ordere my laptop on 6-1. Build date was 6-10. Now two days later build date is all the way till like 6-25 on a new computer. That's a huge jump 10 days to 23 days. Hopefully I won't get delayed. I wonder what's causing the increase in delays? Maybe with new e14 coming out they are using parts for that??
-
My march 11 reordered sb 17's that were shipped late April were Xw930av 2000 series. Replacements from this week are 2100 series Lq621av. Haven't turned either on from this order on yet. Picked up from fed ex end of day wednesday One is for another family member.
-
If you install reil's touchpad app, you can three finger click to send a middle mouse button.
Virtualization is the primary reason I bought the Envy - and then stuffed it with the worlds fastest portable IO subsystem.
It's awfully nice simulating a distributed production environment - on my lap. If the 2000 series ends up supporting 16GB (I'd bet it does) I'm probably at some point going to shove that in too. -
This is my first post and I would just like to say that HP's customer support is completely worthless. They only follow sheets and know nothing about their products. That being said, I received my ENVY 17 3D a week ago after returning my DV7 because of the chipset issue.
I will start by saying that this computer is wonderful. The screen is amazing. But I am having a few issues. First is that I cannot download the newest video drivers. 8.800.8.2000. I have 8.800.8.1000 and anytime i try to download from HPs website it freezes at 66%. I can update through device manager but that gives me some strange version. 8.820.5.1000
I also would like to get a SSD as now I only have the 5400 RPM that came with the ENVY. I see that my laptop is only SATA II. Does anybody have advice on a good SSD. I see from older posts that Intel SSDs have trouble in the ENVY.
And I also have an issue for any Flight Sim players. The 3D will not work. When I try to make a flight it says "3D is disabled. Go to full screen mode." But alt-enter does not work and if I load a flight it is just a black screen. -
I ordered my Envy 17 3DTuesday afternoon and received it the following day. I bought it from BuyDig.com, first time I used them.
The Envy is great, I haven't had any issues with fit and finish. Everything works well, updated the bios and installed latest drivers. All good so far. I've played the 3D demo videos, now I'll have to buy some 3d bluray movies.
As for games, I don't play too often. I downloaded the Wolfenstein demo and it runs smoothly. I need to give it a try with the Tridef 3D Ignition program to see how it works with 3D. -
The version of the drivers through device manager might be the ones from Microsoft Update...avoid if you will....they have caused issues for others. Not sure why your download would freeze...I download with Internet Explorer and have no issues. What browser are you using?
As far as the SSD. SATA 0 and SATA 1, are the SSD / HDD ports on the board and both are capable of SATA III. I believe a few people here have purchased SATA III SSD's and are running hella fast. Intel SSD 320 series is the only problem...for they have data encryption built in, that the bios doesn't recognize. Try the Intel 510 series...should work for you, or look into OCZ Vertex 3 or Crucial SATA III lines. Those are the ones that people are installing with NO issues.
Not being able to run Flight Sim in 3D mode tells me that you are either running the Intel GPU OR...your AMD drivers are corrupt. Now, let me further say...are you saying that regular 3D, or Tri Def 3D. If the game is not supported...with Tri Def...try running the "generic" profile. Please clarify that one...
If the 3D issue is the former, where you cannot run games in 3D at all...then you really need to get the AMD drivers off the HP site, or look for AMD Mobility Radeon drivers 11.4 or 11.5 and install, without removing the ability to do switchable graphics... -
Guys, I'm wondering how much heat the CPU and GPU can withstand? I've been looking for this but getting varied answers, some state 80C, some 100C, and some state 120C.
I tried playing GTA IV the other day and the highest temp reading was 97C for both CPU and GPU, is it still in the safe area?
Oh and how would you know if your laptop is 20xx or 21xx series? Thx before
-
Hi everyone. I just bought a new 2090nr envy, and I have a couple questions. Within the first day of getting it, I was getting freezes. I would have to do a reset as nothing would be responsive. The only thing I had installed was Steam app, and minecraft, and would be getting freezes from both.
Being the first day I was a little perplexed, but I realized I didnt do any windows updates once I did the initial setup. I decided to just do a factory reset and start over. Im currently typing here after doing updates so ill just see how things go.
Lastly, This is my first Hp. The HP support assistant says my comp is up to date, but looking at the HP website, there are a lot of updates for BIOS and such. My question is, should I install these updates from the website, or are they already on my laptop??
Thanks much -
Freezes were attributed to the wifi card being a bit bad. Switch off the wireless card... rj45 to see if the freezing still occurs. A solution is to use a specific older driver or to swap the card out.
You should update the BIOS since it fixes a major throtteling issue that becomes apparent in CPU+GPU intensive tasks. -
Yeah i just had a freeze again. I'll try switching off the wireless and see how that goes. Is there a specific driver that's more stable? Is the wireless card bad in general? Or is just bad luck on some machines? I got a 14 day window to return this baby, hope I can get all the kinks out.
I just did the F.15 update, seeing a lot of people talking about after i was browsing some posts.
Ok,I just found a post about the older wireless drivers, installing now -
To anyone with 2100 series recently received, or a 2000 series envy 17 SB 3d who has updated audio driver..... I currently have 2100 series in my posession to replace a 2000 series. The new unit has newer audio driver and beats interface. The older one from April has former version. Pairing phone to both units and playing identical source music, the new version of beats and related drivers sound notably inferior to the prior version. Tried to load old driver on new machine. No success. Tried replacing dll and related files manually. no success. Just get error along the lines of lack of digital signiture, etc.
Anyone else compare old driver to new? Anyone try putting old driver on new unit. I can't "roll back driver" as new unit did not have former driver and having issue just uninstalling and successfully installing older one. Tips? -
Keep us updated! )
-
Try and use the SRS Audio Sandbox (Not the new one Audiohub). On the setting, "laptop speakers" and correct equilizer setting, the sound from built-in speakers is much better IMO. It has probably a bit more distortions, but the overall sound is more real.
This is the program I'm talking about: SRS Audio Sandbox - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Downloads -
Thank you Bob for the info on SSDs. I will probably go for the 510 since it is on sale. I plan on cloning to it and putting it in slot 0 and move the factory hard drive to slot 1. Is there anything I need to do or change when I do this?
I used my restore disks to factory settings and still could not download the graphic driver from HP.com with explorer. So I tried Firefox and it worked the first time. I don't know what the problem was.
Flight Sim still does not work in 3D. In normal mode it is fine but alt+enter does not make it full screen. All my other games work with tridef in 3D and it recognizes FSX but it says "3D is disabled. Go to full screen mode" on the create flight screen.
And about Tridef software. I downloaded the newest version from their website and installed it in my tridef folder but tridef ignition says it is still version 3.1.34.6597. Did I do something wrong? Do I need all the other stuff that is included such as Experience and Media Player? -
Ok,its been a few hours, no freezing. Keeping the fingers crossed, knocking on wood, and praying it wont freeze! So far everything is good. Only other thing Im realizing, is this will be great as a hand warmer in the winter lol.
-
Thanks for the help with the freezing issue guys.
Next question, Can I use more than one shutter glasses at the same time for myself and a lady friend? or is it limited to one? -
You need to install the new version 4.5.1 on top of the existing version. The newest version of TriDef Ignition is 3.2.32. With that version will come the media player, etc.
-
Would you please explain how I install TriDef on top. Also, what have you done as far as performance modifications. What paging size for virtual memory? I have 8GB memory.
-
To install TriDef on top...you already have the version that shipped with your machine. Just download the new one and install, while the other is installed. This way, you keep your activation and update the software. As far as paging file...I never mess with it. Let windows decide...with 8 GB...it will know what to do
-
I did download and install the new version of TriDef but Ignition still says it is version 3.1.34.6597
