Oh okay thank you, i did check on the screen res and it showed the radeon but why does support assistant show the intel? I can't remember it did that before. Could you test on can you run it website and see if it shows the intel? Cos when I tried that site before my full restore it showed the radeon.

It shows the Intel, because Intel is integrated into your CPU. 3DMark 11 does it as well as other programs. I am not sure how we can overcome this...too bad HP doesn't put a setting in the bios where you can disable the Intel GPU. Desktop boards have a setting to disable onboard graphics and then you install another card in pcie, but that is when the Intel chip was on the motherboard. Intel is really becoming more and more intrusive...

Urgh okay "/ But it's not possible to deactivate the Intel card in the what is it called, unit manager?

But does your Support assistant look like mine does, there's no way to check the Radeon in there, it should at least be click able so you could see the graphic memory etc. And that is really bad that HP's own program doesn't show it the correct way...

    HWiNFO32 Download

Hwinfo32 will give you the info you are looking for, and you can look in Catalys Control Center as well. Just remember, like all new video systems, they clock down until you use them, so if the Core and memory speeds look low on the Radeon, it is because it isn't running full blast. Even my GTX580 on my desktop runs at lower clocks to do normal 2D programs...

    Also look for GPU-Z

Thanks, but where do I see the Radeon speeds in the HWinfo? Or do I need GPU-Z for that. And those programs they are just to check things right? They don't change or mess with anything right?

And one more thing, how much is the turbo boost really? And why did one person a bit back in the thread say it wasn't good to install it on an i7 if it came on ours? Or he wasn't referring to the same thing?

In Hwinfo32, click on the GPU1 tab (dropdown) and choose AMD. You will get the info

Hi chaps, does anyone have any problems recording 'what they hear' with the Envy 17 and Windows 7 x64?

I can see the stereomix option under the recording devices, it has a volume meter next to it. However even if I set it as default device and play some sound on youtube or an mp3 through windows media player I get no green bars on the meter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

Smacking my lips in anticipation of a sandy bridge 3d envy - I think I'm gonna plump for a ocz vertex 3 240gb sad. Does anyone know if the machine can make use of the prodigious data rates of such an add (c. 500 mb/s) which seems to be pretty much amingst the fastest ssds at the moment, or is it pointless ? Or would a "slow" Sara 3 drive give identical performance ?

Ok guys. Now I have a question about doing a fresh install of Win7. I am practicing on my old hard drive so I don't make any mistakes on my new SSD when it gets here. Doing Tridef is simple, but how do I get Photoshop to transfer over. And why do I need to include the SWSetup folder? Can't I just download all the drivers from HP, Adobe, etc?

For Photoshop --> look at my signature!

For SwSetup it's always better to have the provided drivers just in case. Plus Photoshop is in there actually.

Wow. I am really starting to dislike HP. My DV-7 that was recalled because of the Intel chipset issue just arrived back into my arms on my base in Afghanistan after being refused by HP console returns in Tennesse. That was a completely wasted month. The HP representative said she mailed my refund checks already so if I receive those soon I will just keep this laptop. I'm not paying $50 for shipping again. But on a good note I now have a second laptop to test my OCZ Solid 3 drive in. Does the DV-7 also accept SataIII speeds?

    Hey guys,

Anyone have a wobble with their Envy 17 3D? I just acquired a Envy 17-2090nr and wow, the screen looks nice and there are no gap or raised keyboard/touchpad issues. However, the notebook doesn't sit on its left bottom corner leg. It's raised off of it by like 3-4 mm. Take out the battery and it sits on the left leg, but the right top corner leg then lifts off 3-4 mm. The thing rocks like a ship on storm seas. I tought HP had this issue fixed, but I guess not. That's horrible quality control. I can fix the issue by putting thick pieces of ducktape on the legs, but that just ruins the whole premium notebook thing. Oh, if I open the screen, then the rocking causes the screen to shake way too much and just ruins the whole 3D viewing experience.

I honestly thinking about going to Dell Hell or learning to cope with the fruit masters.

Ok. So installing the OCZ Solid 3 in my DV-7 doesn't clear up anything. When I first installed a fresh copy of Windows the boot time was 10 seconds. That was before any drivers or anything. After installing the HP drivers from the website it has increased to about 20 seconds. The audio driver added 4 seconds itself. Crystal Disk benchmark has the same speeds as on my Envy. 190MB/s read and 100MB/s write. And again ATTO benchmark shows over 500MB/s read. I don't know what is right or good. I guess I will still have to wait for my Crucial M4 to find out.

Yep I had a recent 2000CTO 173d RMA unit with other issues that went back that also had a left corner that did not touch table. I checked it on a flat glass top stove. Yep. Did not sit flat. Not the reason it was returned. Functional issues were the cause of return but it did have a non-flat condition as well. You could out something between foot and body of notebook but should not have to, I agree. Mine was not as crooked as you indicated yours was. Disappointing I know. Have been thru a few myself with different unresolvable issues. Kind of a drag to deal with and should expect more for the fat loot you drop down. Some of the quality stuff we've experience is easily remedied with simple process controls during manufacturing and assembly. Controls may add time or cost to process but don't necessarily have to. Oh well I feel you.......

I have been having many issues with the display not working, and the laptop even freezing when switching to AMD GPU. It is intermittent though, and only seems to be affecting mine? Please let me know if you have had any issues or I might have to RMA it.

I have tried all updates, including latest HP and AMD drivers. It does work most of the time but is very bug ridden....

Phisherman, I'd suggest to call Envy special tech and see if they can do a diagnostic walk through with you and figure out what the deal is. Good luck, and keep us posted. Oh, and have a kick 4th of July! :D

P.S. This goes for everyone on NBR, have a healthy, safe, but most of all, a fun holiday!

Thanks for the reply! Do you think they will tell me anything I don't know? I haven't tried a full restore, which will probably fix the problem. I will try soon though. I am also contemplating contacting the case manager who helped me replace my old laptop before to possibly just exchange... :(

Rma'd one myself recently that froze at original boot up during setup. Blue screens sometimes. It would freeze while using or when screen was black in seemed stuck in standby and just could not wake it up or move trackpad mouse and get any reaction. Just frozen in time with or without picture. Requiring hard reboot. Even rcently had screen freeze and ridiculous constant loud buzzing loud noise came from unit till rebooting. Took a video of this on iPhone. The one thing I do not recall happening is freezing when changing from one graphics card to the other. Maybe once or twice, but generally always when I'm already watching something or if i left it unattended and came back to a blue screen recovery message. Also intermittent and inconsistent. Didn't seem to matter whether I recovered to factory settings with no windows updates or had every windows update, Microsoft security essentials, all the hp support manager updates for video and other drivers and interface controls. Just happened when it happened.

Had another one in family that had none of these problems. Replacement has ticking graphics card when on AMD. Ticks like a police tqzer ONLY on AMD card. Absolutely no noise, except normal cooling fan whir when on intel card. A little louder and faster as graphics load increases. Even with low load like low res hulu or YouTube. The unit with other problems did not have graphics card tick.

Pavillions are a lot nicer than most think. I have the Envy 17 3D and Love it! I got another Pavillion for my son. He was adamant about another Pavillion. First one had the Turion gold processor from AMD. The new dv7t is configured like yours with the 2630M. Great little processor...can't say enough. Right now...HP seems to be offering the best value for the dollar as well. No complaints here. Welcome!

Hi guys, I have been away form the boards for quite a while. Been busy with work and other stuff, but I did enjoy my envy quite a bit. @ Bobmitch, I still haven't replaced my original keyboard ;-).
I actually started to do some gaming (not that I have much time) and the nevy has been flawless, it is getting hot after the bios update though (but no more throtteling).
Since recently I do have one little issue and I have been looking all over the place to find teh solution (unfortunately the search option in this forum is not all that usefull). My HP wireless assitant has been causing error messages. After the system runs for about 5 minutes, I get an error message that the HP Wireless assistant will close sionce it was unable to detect any wireless device!?!?! Anybody ever had that issue?
Oh, and since I have been doing some gaming, I am seriously looking into a cooling pad once more (the extended battery has been serving me well, but my desk surface still get's waaaayyyy to hot (actually lifted the back up a bit more and temps dropped by 2degree Celcius).

I recall I had the same issue, as well as somebody else in here. I believe updating the amd driver (only the driver of the card, by doing a custom install) solved the issue for me. If your is the same problem as mine was, just the reinstall/recocvery won't solve your issue.

Honestly, I disabled HP Wireless Asst the day I got my Envy. I have always found Windows to be a pretty reliable way to connect. Try that...it even connects faster (I mean that I boot up and when windows loads, I am already online). BTW...stay away from this one:

Newegg.com - Targus Lap Chill Mat Model AWE55US

Tried it and it did NOTHING for the Envy. Never seemed to help cool it...so brought it back...

So Im on my second ENVY 17. Both of which have been freezing up randomly. I have used 2 different 6200's and a 6300 yet it still freezes while watching netflix. Havent tested it on the new laptop but the old one would only freeze when not using ethernet.. so wirelessly. 2 laptops deep and still no fix. Has anyone had this much trouble with the freezing?? Its starting to get ridiculous.

what version of the wifi driver are you using?

I think its the 14.0 not the 14.1 that you want. Also, I was using the 13.0 drivers and they worked perfectly

I have 14.1.1.3 dated as 5/1/2011.. I tried the 13.0 driver on my old one (which I still have, havent sent it back yet) and it didnt work.

What is a good driver removal utility and is there a link to the 14.0 or 13.0 drivers?

I used this one AMD Catalyst 11.5b Hotfix driver download from Guru3D.com
Just make sure you do the custom install and deselect the CC control center (you want to keep your hp version of it, since you will loose switchable graphics otherwise). This will update the AMD driver. Solved my problem. Never had a BOD since I did it. (knocking on wood).

For the 14.0, you can get it right of the hp support page under previous versions:
Intel Wireless Drivers, Intel PROSet, and Intel My WiFi for Microsoft Windows 7 HP ENVY 17t-2000 CTO 3D Edition Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

In regards to driver sweepers, I am not an expert, and you don't really need any for the wifi drivers, but I have heard that driver sweeper has served others well:
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper (Setup) download from Guru3D.com

    slotti...

That is absolutely the correct way. The HP CCC maintains switchable graphics AND there are a couple of caviats. I noticed when switching, on the Envy 17 3D...screen refresh rate on AMD card is 120 and Intel is 60, which is normal. Now...after installing...I have to manually set the AMD refresh back to 120, it doesn't do it by itself anymore. Also...brightness keys don't work...BUT...the speed increase in 3Dmark 11 was pretty big with the AMD Cats. Everything else is pretty much normal.

For a work-around and not a fix for the brightness keys: page 485 link i posted up the work around i am using that i played with from fiver5, basically i use ctrl+f2 / ctrl+f3 to increase my brightness, also made a more information link at the end of my post. When i get some free time I'll see if i can get a work around for the 120, maybe a better implementation of the brightness keys too.

On a related note, i just RMA's my first drive from this laptop, I was doing windows updates and got some errors/failed install, finally diagnosed it as thee normal hd dieing in it (my temp folder location / swap was on that drive) - It corrupted a few windows files before it installed them onto my SSD. Fun stuff.

Word to the wise - Call hp support! So much faster and just generally better than using their online support system (IMOP, YMMV). The online support system wanted me to send back my whole laptop because when i ran the quick HD test, my SSD and my conventional drive both came up failed when i put them into slot one. I was going on vacation when they told me that, did the math and figured out it would just maybe make it back to me in time.. and the stories I have heard about the condition it may return in....

So i did some more testing on my own, turns out, it came up failed for my SSD only because the Conventional drive was in slot 2 failing out. Pull it out, SSD is fine, put in another drive into slot 2, SSD is fine again. That is when i called HP Support instead of doing the online thing, Explained the situation, my additional testing, and what I felt the problem really was, and she just took care of it for me =) All is well that ends well i suppose, saved the windows install on the SSD with some trickery, was able to copy all of my files / vms off of my conventional drive with out having to go to the backups on my drobo too. Oh. and a free set of HP factory recovery disks too! ^.^

So I installed the 14.0 driver on both my machines. one running a 6200 and one a 6300... same problem still. the 6300 has had problems connecting and staying connected. the 6200 does too but not as bad. I have to wait until monday to talk to tech support again. What are their options at this point? 2 bad laptops.

Go to the Intel website and download the older drivers. It is not as much an issue with the 6200 and 6300 being bad....they do have issues with certain chipset routers. I have the 6200 running with the 14.0 drivers and an Atheros chipset D-Link DIR-655. No issues at all. All depends. Many on the board have solved the issue with older drivers

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...roducts&ProdId=3200&LineId=1784&FamilyId=1783

Try the 13 series of drivers...a few builds to try. One may work. Tech support may not be much more help

Ive tried the older drivers before using the 14.0's

In all honesty it hasnt worked a single day in 2 months... meaning DOA thats good for a refund or something. I also shouldnt have to baby sit it to make sure it wont screw up for as much as was paid for it...

Does anyone know if the Envy 17 SB supports DDR3 1600 Ram? In my Envy I have the 2820QM CPU that technically supports 1600.

    Hi all !
First post, been reading a lot and finally signed up :)
Got an Envy 17-2090eo a week ago, and after a few days I saw
a small speck of dust behind the display glass. Right in the middle of the screen ofc..

I have searched the forum and found a thread about how to remove the front glass
on the Envy 14, but, is it just as easy on the 17, has anyone done that ?

I don't think this is covered by the warranty, and btw, this is my fourth Envy,
don't want to replace another one again..

So, removing the front panel glass, anyone ?

    Thanks !
