That is the price one pays, unfortunately. I adjust brightness under power in Control panel. Very rarely change it so I leave brightness on power with AMD at 75% and on battery with Intel I keep brightness at 60%. No need to play with it so it doesn't bother me.

In addition...I have programs that I use for business, so I disable the HP hotkeys in bios...I need my F2 key to F10 keys for other functions...

Excellent choice. Should I replace the Intel 320 series...only two will do for me...one was Crucial M3 and the other Kingston HyperX. Both GREAT drives. Enjoy the new found speed

WIN+X keys bring up the Windows Mobility Center which has a brightness slider. Much easier than going into the power settings.

Hey there just came out a new beta driver 12.1 prev for our card. I'm still loading. the full driver will be presented in Jan 2012. Regarding to the news we now can adjust different settings to each game/application without changing the settings manually before playing/working. I hope the HardKey prob is fixed with that as I'm still loading (slow internet = horror!)

I doubt it will address the Function Keys, since that is an HP thing.. I'm still using the HP drivers on my Envy and have NO issues playing any of the new games out there. However, what benefits do the new versions bring over the HP version on HP's Support Web Site? Is there that much of a benefit to them?

Hey guys, I have a 3D question. What benefits will I gain with the 3D version (3D wise that is)? Keep in mind the ONLY 3D movie I believe I have is Avatar (Since it is the Blu-Ray version. I actually have both versions) and I have NO 3D games. So what will it do for me?

    Thanks!

You missed the 33% off coupon that expired on the 11th. I don't see any similar active discount right now, might have to wait awhile for another one.

The standard "instant rebate" right now for the ENVY 15 is $250; which is about $195 less than the 33% off coupon would have been.

It's really odd as everything works fine on the built in wi-fi except when I try to download torrents. BitTorrent, uTorrent and Vuze all freeze the ENVY. No other kind of internet downloading by Wi-fi causes any problems. I will likely discuss this at length until I fix it as it is rather annoying on a high end laptop. Now I will try and buy another wi-fi card on Ebay. The IT malls where I live (SE Asia) don't sell them over the counter. I looked in my bricked ENVY 1011NR for spares but that comes with a Broadcom wi-fi.

Absolutely. If you purchase with two HDD...most likely delivered in RAID 0

What if you purchase with one hard drive? There must be a way to configure it yourself.

Yes there is. Off the top of my head, I cannot tell you...but there is a company that sells the HDD caddies for HP Envy and more. Comes with the SATA cable and all. I know for a fact that it is way earlier in this thread...wish I knew exactly where...but you can do it...

Found it...here is a hard drive caddy that works with Envy and Pavillion

If your original purchase only included 1 HDD, you cannot run a RAID 0 Array (in that configuration). You need to have (at a minimum) 2 matching HDD's (in size and speed) for a RAID 0 Array to function as mandated.

    Per INTEL:
Intel Matrix Storage Technology can also improve the performance of disk intensive retrieval applications such as editing home video. By combining from two to six drives in a RAID 0 configuration, data can be accessed on each drive simultaneously, speeding up response time on data-intensive applications.

The above was Clipped from this link: Intel® Matrix Storage Technology

NOTE: If your looking into adding a 2nd HDD to your Envy, look at Bobmitch's reply ^^above^^...

Interesting, the Italian version I have has a Broadcom wifi as well. Works perfectly everywhere. Guess they took a note when they released the European versions.

If I may ask, what are your notebook's temps when you browse, watch movies, game?

Hey guys, I have a Crucial M4 installed as my primary(C: ) with the included 7200rpm as my secondary(E: ). win7 boots up faster but disk management shows my system drive(D: ) on the 7200rpm drive as well as HP tools. The SSD only has 2 partitions. System reserved and C: drive. Is this correct or is something misplaced?

I am not sure if I understand. Hp tools will be on drive D . Did your envy come with the connection for the two hard drives or did you buy it with two drives. I find it a bit ridiculous that all connections aren't available.

I have 2 printers installed on my Envy; HP Envy 114 E-all-in-one Printer and an HP LaserJet 6P. I obviously use them for different things, but they are used maybe 10 days +/- out of the month. My question is:

    A. Should I leave them turn off until I need them? Not sure how much electric they actually use up.

    OR

    B. Leave them turned on all of the time?

Does it impact the printers to keep turning them on or off? Do they use a lot of electricity if left on? I use compressed air on them for cleaning, which I do about every 6 months..

NOTE: The Envy has a sleep mode, where as the 6P does not. However the 6P takes a while to Boot up (Maybe 2 minutes), because it has 50MB of on board RAM installed (upgraded)..

So, what would you guys do in my situation?

It came with one drive. I purchased the M4 and cable separately. Here is my partition setup.
Disk 0(M4 SSD)- C: drive and System reserved.
    Disk 1(7200rpm HDD)- System(D: ), E:, and HP tools

My question is, shouldn't the System D: be on Disk 0 since that is where I installed Win7.

How often would you suggest that the Envy be cleaned? I know that compressed air is the primary item to use in the cleaning, but how do we got about cleaning these with it? If I blow the air "INTO" the Envy from the exhaust vents, it seems that would only cause problems down the road since all of the debris is being blasted into the Envy. So how are you all doing this?

I ask this, because this is my first laptop. In the past, I would just open the side of my desktop PC and carry it outside and use a can of compressed air on it, cleaning the entire inside of the PC. Big differences with Laptops..

I know I don't need to clean mine yet, but I just want to be ready when the time comes and I want to make sure I am doing it correctly...

    Thanks!!

Did you also purchase the "Drive Caddy" for the new drive, or was that already in the Envy, but not occupied? Do a search for the postings by "BOBMITCH" He posted a short manual on how to fix the issue you are having. OR send him a PM, he is very prompt in replying!

    Good Luck!

I usually disassemble my laptop(s) once a year and use micro vacuum attachments with a shop vac to suck up all the dust. Using canned propellant can just blow it back inside the case as you said. If it's your only choice, blow it into the the fan intake area, not directly at the heatsink fins (blowing it back inside).

I don't have pets, but I've repaired quite a few laptops that have had pet hair completely clogging the heatsink fins. If you have pets a twice a year cleaning might be necessary.

The OS is on Disk 0 and also on disk 1 which is the drive HP used. Since you didn't format the D drive you basically have windows on both disks. If you have no use for it you can format system D partition or even merge it with another partition. However you want it. If I were you I would make recovery disks and get rid of HP tools.

Did the laptop come with the caddy? How much did you pay for the cable and where did you get it?

Thanks for the info. I tried to delete HP tools but it says currently in use. Should I force delete it? How do I merge system D: with Disk 0? Will it make the system better or does it not make a difference?

I got the caddy and cable from newmodeus. $40
Hard Drive Caddy & Cable for HP Envy 17 (also works with SSD) [HP-ENVY-17] - $38.55 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

Not possible to merge them like that. If there is nothing on drive D that you want then go to computer management and delete the partitions then format the drive. Do you have recovery disks? They are not necessary but still good to keep if you ever want to return to stock.

I find that to be expensive for a caddy and cable. When I receive the laptop and there is no caddy I am going to call HP and demand that they send me one. That's like buying a PC case to find out you need to buy the cables.

I know it is pricey and is stupid to purchase their flagship laptop and not get the second caddy and cable. Good luck trying to get it from them. I tried and they don't budge. I know a lot of people have complained so they know about it and are prepared to refuse it. Hopefully you can get some new customer support person that actually does it for you. I find HPs customer service worthless and have found that paying $20 or $40 is less trouble than waiting on hold for 2 hours and arguing with them.

44-45C browsing the web for two hours now battery using Intel graphics... would go up about 10 degrees on separate card. This is series 2xxx so temps are perfect. Perhaps this is a regional based issue (not sure) as my original ENVY with Broadcom wi-fi worked fine. Other laptops I now have come with Broadcom and Atheros wi-fi adapters. This 2xxx series ENVY is the only Intel wi-fi I have. Only used it on SE Asia wifi routers (several) to date with same results.

UPDATE on the Envy 3rd Gen's:

Well, it would appears that the New Envy 15's are now SHIPPING! People who bought one between the 7th - 10th are reporting their units are now shipped with a delivery date of the 22nd! The 17's are all still in production mode. So MAYBE we'll start seeing some reviews this week and definitely some UNBOXING video's and owner reviews by the weekend..

The bottom left side of my Envy 2nd gen (2XXX series) is now becoming uncomfortably hot. To the extent that i could fry an egg on it with relative ease.

I also own a 17 inch Macbook Pro and i have to say the Mac is clearly the more superior laptop with only the 3D feature and the Blu ray player absent.

Can i do anything at all about the heat the Envy is generating? I have a cooling pad but that doesn't seem to help much.
