Do this while the machine is COOL! Don't try when hot...you might do more harm than good. Get a can of compressed air...blow out the intake and output vents. You might be getting a build up of dust and other matter and by cleaning these out...you will clear the way...

What are your TEMPS? If you don't have any Temp Monitoring software installed, you may want to go here and download "Core Temp Gadget 2.7". This sits right on your desktop! Report back with your findings.

Link: Core Temp - Add Ons

Of course take "Bobmitch's" recommendation as well!

I am so ENVIES, LOL, but seriously, I am!! So you may be the first with an UNBOXING video. I know there are a bunch of people who have had their 15's shipped with a delivery date of the 22nd. But you may be one of the first to get the 17....

Personally I would get a single multi-function color laserjet printer and get rid of both of those. However, since that wasn't a listed option, turning them off on days you don't plan to use them is the cheapest solution. Even in sleep, electronics use up some juice. Thus, the question is convenience versus cost. I have two laser printers in my house (one color multi-function and the other an older black/white). I leave both on all the time, but turned their sleep mode timers down to the lowest setting (thus they spend most of their time in sleep). I made the choice that convenience was worth it though, but I do eventually plan to decommission the black and white laser.

    It impacts my lazyness. :p

I have a B&W Samsung wireless laser printer and it hasn't been turned completely off (has a sleep mode) for almost a year now.

I stopped using color printers years ago. I rarely ever have the need to print something in color and they're just too costly to maintain; inkjets especially since the cartridges clog up if they sit unused for too long.

Thanks Guys! I think I will just switch them off and turn them on when I need them since they are in close proximity to my computer desk. Just wanted to get some ideas what others are doing and if turning them on and off was more detrimental than just leaving them on.

    Greetings everyone

well i've got some probs with my windows recovery and hope someone can help me out :)

As i experienced some issues with the riad 0 utility (one of the harddisks kept failing sometimes,i was able to fix it trough Intel raid storage by simply clicking on reset to normal on the filed HD ) but it really kept getting disturbing as it caused freezes spikes and programs failure so i decided to disable the raid utility (tbh i really dont need a raid on my system)

So ran a back up and saved stuffs, Created a set of recovery disks and restarded the computer, went through RIAD OROM and reseted the raid to normal (just did whatever exactly as it was written on the user manual), Then put the rec disc and ran the System Recovery option the recovery manager. Everything went good and after the disks installation finnished it reboot my computer, i took the disks and was waiting to system boots through the harddisk to continue the procces ...
BUT it did not :( keeps giving me the "no bootable device -- insert the boot disk and press any key", i tried to boot again through the rec disk and ran the system recovery again, after installation nad reboot ... same prob, tried to find any options for harddisks configuration in the BIOS or RIAD OROM but found nothing, triedto google it and searched around but found nothing, so i'm confused how to make the system boots through the HD to continue recovery progress, if u have any solution it'd be great if u can share :)

    Best Regards

OK...first rule on hand. Make sure that your two drives are RAIDED. In your bios, you have RAID turned ON. Good...now reboot and hit Crtl-I and it should bring up the RAID configuration screen. Make sure that both disks are chosen...choose "Create RAID Array" use both disks...make your stripe size 128 and now reboot. When you reboot, you should see both drives in GREEN. Sounds like one of your drives might be funky if you keep losing the array. Perhaps you should download Intel's latest Storage manager and drivers from here:

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...sion=Windows 7 (64-bit)*&DownloadType=Drivers

    See if that helps...

That's the best unboxing video period. Splendid music and real atmosphere! Those early HP ENVY series 1xxx promotional videos make me want to be physically sick just thinking about the money I wasted on that original release and the over hype of those YouTube videos. Your video triumphs over this and is the real thing. I hope you have many successful years with your new laptop. Well done!

First, Congrats on getting your Envy 3D! It is the most AWESOME Laptop on the market! If you haven't yet, you soon will fall in love with your Envy, it is just that fabulous! Regarding your movie, YES, it will play flawlessly on your Envy, so sit back and enjoy! As per your request, here you go:

    1. Start the Envy and create your Restore / Backup Disc's.
    2. Install your software (MS Office, Games, etc.. etc..).
    3. Download HP Updates, via the HP Support Assistant, a must.
    4. Download the windows updates, EXCLUDING the AMD 6850 update. Make sure you do NOT download that. Find it, uncheck it and hide it. You will need check for updates about 10 times, depending on what MS software you have installed.
4A. While doing 3 or 4 I setup my start menu area the way I like it and setup my desktop using Fences and Object Dock, free download from Stardock.
    5. Add any external devices (keyboard, mouse, UPS, printers, speaker system, etc...).
    6. Run the Heaven 2.5 DX11 GPU Benchmark ( http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1961/Unigine_Heaven_DX11_Benchmark_2.5.html ) to test your screen and GPU.
    7. Run disc cleanup.
    8. Run disc defrag.
** If you have a program like "Tuneup Utilities", run it last to tie off all your loose ends..

By doing it in this order, your not stepping on the toes of things not done yet or interfering with other jobs your running.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!! Good luck and please keep us posted! ;)

Gunny...excellent reply. Only thing I recommend after doing all this is make sure to burn a copy of SWSETUP folder on the hard drive and backup the TriDef folder (In C:\Program Files (x86)\TriDef). The TriDef folder contains your license for the program that plays games in 3D. Also...you can go to TriDef and get the latest version

    TriDef 3D - Downloads

DO NOT uninstall the version on your machine...just install this on top and the license stays current and activated. That should be it.

Gunny...tried to give you a +1 and it keeps telling me to spread the pos around before giving to you. I owe you one for a great job on the post...

Hello, i'm thinking of getting an ENVY 17-2110en with the 3d screen but i've been told there are lots of complaints about overheating. I can't read all the posts in this thread (it's huge!) but from the few i read i see that it does get to high temperatures. Is it really that bad? I will play games on it so what temperatures should i expect? And in general, now that you've owned one for a long time would you still reccomend it to someone? Thanks in advance :)

The Sandy Bridge version of the Envy (yours will be one), do not have heat issues as the first gen did. Gaming will raise your temps to hi 80's to low 90's C. I have been with Envy 17 3D since April and DO recommend the machine. It is decent with gaming and great with multimedia. You have a true quad core processor and more. The 2nd Gen Envy has the HM67 chipset with is SATA III...so you can get a super fast SSD and see it's true potential. Concierge support for Envy is based in Little Rock, Arkansas...and is part of the deal with the machine. Other companies will charge extra for North American tech support...not HP. I am sure others can chime in, like Gunny, to tell you how delighted they are with the Envy. What is the return policy on the machine you are looking at? If it is even 7 days...that should give you plenty of time to decide for yourself...

Thank you for taking time to reply :)
Well a temperature up to low 90's C during heavy gaming i think is not such a big deal or something uncommon. Well i live in Greece so the North American tech support doesn't really matter much to me but i've heard good things about the HP dealership and service here. I will be buying it from an e-shop here and there isn't an option to give it back if you don't like it ( we don't have that at all from what i know) but it comes with 1 year pickup & return and a 30 days DOA (dead on arrival). I was also thinking of the envy 17-3020en but i don't think it worths paying more for a GPU that isn't really different in terms of perfomance from the 6850m. Plus i do think that 2xxx series look better (ok, looks isn't really important but i always thought that the 2xxx series were the best looking laptops in my opinion)

To add on to what "BobMitch" has said, you will truly Love your ENVY! HP has made the Envy the Flagship of their Laptop line. Not only is the build quality 2nd to none (in the PC market), but the Support Service to also better than any other in the PC market and matter a fact, it is probably equal to or better than even Apples Support, and that says a lot! I am a pretty active PC gamer (Skyrim, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc..) and the highest my temps get after hours of playing is the low 80's and that is flutuating, not constant. Just ensure you have great ventilation and do not cover up any of the vents and you will be fine! Simply put, if you choose the Envy, you will not be disappointed! By the way, we pretty much agree with you on the cosmetics between the 2nd and 3rd generations! I love the design on mine!!!

    Thank you :)
The one i'm thinking of buying has these specs:
    ENVY 17-2110en
    Part number: LS594EA
    Intel Core i7 - 2630QM (2.0GHz - Turbo Boost 2.90Ghz, 6MB Cache, DMI 2.0)
    Chipset Intel HM67
    RAM 8192MB (2x4096MB) DDR3, up to 8192MB maximum memory
    HDD 1TB (5400rpm)
AMD Radeon HD 6850M 1GB dedicated memory GDDR5
    17.3" Ultra BrightView Infinity 3D (1600x900)

I am concerned about the screen, the resolution seems to be a bit low (altough it will give me better game perfomance). Also i will replace the hdd in the future and probably go for an ssd when prices drop.

    That must be a mis-print...the Envy 17 / Envy 17 3D only come 1920 x 1080. Both have 1080p screens. Envy 17 3D screen refreshes at 120 Hz

    http://www.notebookshop.com.hr/Default.aspx?pid=3010

Product description from another site...all sites say 1920 x 1080

I prepare a new system setup! How come that the latest drivers of the synaptic touchpad (v.15.2.20) has a file size of 55.43MB and the one from HP Support is v.15.2.4.4 (older) but 91.57MB big!! Are there special files attached that are important or just a crappy compression used (or MUI added??)

The intel processor graphic drivers aren't even mentioned on HP's page

    Update drivers list

You know that problem: You set up your computer and want to install all drivers. So you go to HP page and download them in expectation to get the latest versions. BUT they are not up to date!! If u go to the manufacturer of the products u see much later versions that run more stable and have less problems (graphic, wireless, etc)
So I collected the links to the downloadpages

    Audio:

IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver - only possible from HP page

    Chipset:

Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver - nothing found yet
Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver - only possible from HP page
Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver - here

    Graphics:

AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver - here
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver - not listed on HP page, DL here

    Touchpad

    Synaptics TouchPad Driver - here

    Wifi/LAN

Realtek Local Area Network (LAN) Driver - here (Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2 Driver or 5th row for auto installation)
    Broadcom 2070 Bluetooth - here
    Intel Wireless drivers - here

    Storage:

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology - here
Realtek Card Reader Driver - here (the third one "USB" is the right one)

    optional

    Intel® Turbo Boost Technology Monitor

additional software like coolsense are provided by HP directly and should be up to date when u go on your update page!

For the folks who have the Envy 17/17 3D (3rd Gens), can you check to see which Intel Chipset you have:

    A. HM65 (Hardware RAID, NOT Supported)
    or
    B. HM67 (Hardware RAID, IS Supported)

    And let us know. THANKS!!!

Look for a program group "HP Recovery Manager" Inside there is a program called HP Recovery Media Creation. Follow the Instructions...either DVD or Flash Drive...

Did you try both suggestions? Also, if it persists, you can always do a System Restore back to Factory Default and that will definitely correct the problem!

Based on the fact that nothing is working...I agree with Gunny...may be your only chance of cleaning up whatever "issues" you may have with your installation...

How to enhance my Envy performance when playing Skyrim? I have played Skyrim in high configuration and the fps is <20. Is this laptop that bad in playing games :( ? I have updated bios and vga driver to the latest one

Skyrim is a horribly optimized game. Even my gaming rig struggles to get a decent frame rate in some locations. The game doesn't support multi-core CPUs (limited to 2 threads) and is just overall a resource hog for no reason (textures are very low in resolution, unlike most modern games)

In other words, it's a typical Bethesda game.

In the game config (Startup Menu), I have it set to HIGH. In HP Coolsense, I have it set to PERFORMANCE. I am using the HP June 3rd AMD Driver release (8.820.5.1000) and I usually get FRAP scores of around 25-30, which runs smooth and doesn't hiccup at all.. I believe my display settings is 1280x1024, or something close to that...
