Tim, how did it work out with your new fan with double outputs? Removed the plastic cover like you did, without much effect - interested to know if you managed to lower your temperatures, or if the screen ends up blocking the second output.
-
I removed the plastic cover in mine 2100 cto. The fan seems to output more "AIR"when working.
Note that when I disassembled the "HEATSINK". The supose pure copper from CPU do have some "protuberances" like oxidation. Was clear that almost 40% from the heatsink area was not direct in cpu nucleus. I used an ultra fine sandpaper to turn the base like a glass again. Easy to say I'm ~ -10 Celsius less in temperature. when under linux and using the intel card. Barely the temperature are upper 48 Celsius. and under windows ~55, 60 Celsius. Just when using the AMd card overheat to ~72, 75 Celsius.

Re wifi 6200/6300 card for my XG360AV=HP ENVY 17t-2000 CTO 3D Edition Notebook (sandy bridge) (It's a couple of years old so I think it is a second generation 3d machine?)
(I think)
Wifi on my machine has always worked (using the factory fitted 6200 card), but for it takes AGES to connect (45 seconds maybe-often times I have to reset the connection and try again- and is worse than any other laptop I've ever seen) whatever the router I'm connecting to. My Dad has a later Envy 3d-- though I don't know what the chip set is in it, and it always connects "boom" in a few seconds, again whatever the router.
I'm guessing this is a hardware issue, and have been thinking about upgrading the wifi card to the 6300 like various people have done. I've scoured the forum fro the last hour or so: but still have some questions:
1. As of now (September 2012), is the 6300 still the "best" upgrade card to go for, to keep my "options open" for high speed modern routers, as and when I come across them, as well as having the best "bug" profile? (though ironically my home router is a Netgear 300N so only capable of 300Mbps)
2.Anbody got a link to a "how to change the wifi card in these machines" tutorial/ youtube video? I'm not sure how to get to it, and how to know I've connected the aerials in teh "proper order" (if htere is such a thing?)
3. the 6300 expects 3 aerials. So: does that mean I will be leaving one disconnected ? (I presume the laptop only has two aerials in it?)
4. Anyone else found connecting to routers taking an age and having any other solutions ? Themachine works well, has most recent drivers blah blah. otheriwse works very well. Any musings helpfully recieved. Previous posts all seemed to be about wifi cards crashing, rather than the problem I'm trying to solve.
Cheers !

Back in the olden days
when we had larger dies and sink surfaces bigger than an inch square, we used to do this all the time.
We'd take a piece of glass and a piece of 320 or higher wet/dry sandpaper, wet it and do circles with the cpu and sink, then go finer with the paper. After a couple minutes, the sandpaper would need to be rinsed off. The trick is to keep the sink and cpu surface flat and not round the edges.
Now you make me want to tear into my laptop again.
-
Can anyone tell me what options I have, short of a full reinstall, to fix a problem I've created?
I was screwing around trying to do something I won't go into detail on, but short story is my processor got uninstalled. After restarting and the processor being automatically reinstalled, all of the power options for the CPU disappeared... the entire registry entry went missing. The only entry under "processor power management" is the system cooling policy. Now the CPU is "stuck" at 2ghz constantly. -
How about a system restore back to before you screwed it up?
(Start... all programs... accessories... system tools... system restore)
Pick a date before it happened. -
I haven't had system restore enabled on my machines for over 10 years.
I guess I will have to do a repair install (in-place upgrade) unless anyone has another suggestion. -
And after much reading on line I am wondering.. would installing the 6300 result in losing bluetooth functionality ? (which I definatley do want to keep working...)
-
In fact I seem to have answered some of my own questions now:
The laptop only has two arials, and the third would be necessary for full 450 "operation", however the thirde aerial can also be used for diversity : hence giving (potentially) more noise tolerance it would appear at lower bandwidths, as the card "hunts" & switches to the aerial with the best signal- which will vary due to peculiatrities of path from signal to rceiver, which can be different with different physical positions of aerial. It appears fleebay is almost as good as anywhere to pick laptop (internal) wifi aerials, which although of low gain compared to external aerials, for neatness and ease sake may be worth stuffing in the case.
Lastly: which are the most current stable drivers people are using for the 6200 and indeed 6200 cards at the moment ? -
Here's the latest drivers: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...dv7-6xxx-envy-14-2xxx-envy-17-2xxx-intel.html
-
Thanks for reminding me of the drivers page on this forum. I noticed some of my drivers were in need of update (My HP Support assistant never thought to tell me so! Thanks HP). Now my PC seems to run much smoother without the constant worry of CPU maxing out anymore. Only taken a year to get here - but worth the wait! HP ENVY 17 2280NR.
-
thank you colchiro!
that was seriously helpful: as it gave me the heads up there wre updated drivers, since I'd last updated them (12 months or so ago), incl. a BIOS one, etc. The new wifi card driver seems to have sped up connection time dramatically too... so I'm a very happy bunny
don't think I'll be upgrading to the 6300 now, unless I've simply been experiencing "beginners luck"

I need to update some of my drivers too.

URGENT
The service manual say the board for mine envy 17 3d 2100 CTO Part Number is 630793-001 but mine board have the part number 660203-001. didn't find what the difference between both ones.
someone please? know the difference? the guy is waiting to send me the correct board. -
I'd check out this one then: http://www.ebay.com/itm/hp-envy-17-...03-001-tested-Free-Shipping-DHL-/150893396877
-
YES I'm buying from this guy. But what the difference? He can't answer me.
and the one from others are almost U$ 100.
the service manual or the computer part number?
why the changes in PN? Same visually they are identical's.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/hp-envy-17-...863&pid=100015&prg=1006&rk=1&sd=150893396877& and
http://www.ebay.com/itm/150898943199?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
both are same board name, same revision, same code. -
Different cpu or heat sink? I'd hate to install one just to find out I needed the other.
-
No idea. The guy can't find visually differences nor me.
In service manual there is 2 models, one with 3d and no 3d. The one I'm buying is with 3d.
Now i'm really confuse about this.
I send an email to HP and /hp answer to follow the service manual. Now Become more confuse.
Service manual /pn or the old /board /pn?
After restore this computer. I'm to sell it and be far, far away from any hp products.
this brand is a . -
Maybe the non video graphic switch intel/AMD? the Service manual was made for 200 to 2099 models and not the 2100, 2195, 2200 models.
someone here with a second generation below 2099 model confirm this?
The specification from 17-2090NR for example say the Video Graphics Radeon HD 6850M Graphics
Video Memory 1024MB GDDR5 and up to 4083MB and the 17-2195CA and upper Video Graphics Radeon HD 6850M Graphics
Video Memory 1024MB GDDR5.
Maybe this? -
Ho, and one last thing. everyone willing to use the heat sink with the second door model.
don't do it.
the fan is smaller, the copper material is a cheap one and the computer start to overheat more often.
Pictures from the differences soon. -
Hey guys, sorry if this has been asked before but... I have Envy 17 3D i7-2630. Im trying to play World of Warcract on it. Even witht he seetings turned all the way down in the game I cant play for more than 5 minutes without it becoming choppy to the point where its almost frozen. Happens to video and sound. I tried numerous things like closing out all other applications, things like that but to no avail. I even turned downt he frame rate to 50. Anyone have any ideas why or what I can do? Rather disappointing that this laptop cant handle WoW even on low settings.
-
Turn HP Coolsense off.

Hey guys, I need your help!
I got an Envy 2100EO, and I recently bought a Siberia Steelseries v2 headset, but cant get the mic to work.
Seemingly, I have 2x3,5mm jacks, but one of them is for sound, the 2nd one I THOUGHT was a line in, is most likely some combo.
Is it possible to run a fullsize headset with 2 cables (1 mic 1 sound) in this PC or am I screwed? -
I got the same headset. The second jack is for those combo audio/mic cables (the ones that usually come with phones) which sucks for anyone who bought these gaming headsets. You'll going to need to buy on of these: Amazon.com: Headset Buddy
01-PC35-PH35) PC Headset to 3.5mm Smartphone Adapter: Convert Dual 3.5mm to 3.5mm, PC Computer Headset to iPhone, Blackberry, Droid, Palm, Samsung, LG, HTC: Electronics
-
Did you experience any loss in the soundquality when using an adapter?
-
Nope, sound coming in and out is clear. The Siberia V2 is a great headset.
-
Alright, then Ill most likely get one.
I did call HP support in sweden though, they 'confirmed' that this kind of headseat 'should' work.
Bleh, not sure of anything. -
I bought and tried to upgrade to windows 8 pro and due to the incredible fail AMD graphics are I am currently restoring my envy with Acronis back to windows 7
-
Did you run the upgrade assistant first?
I want no part of Windows 8. It'll be the next Windows Millennium (a real stinker). It might be ok on a tablet, but there's no place for it on any of my devices.
I installed it on a virtual machine at work for support reasons (test out website and software), but the interface just stinks using a mouse without a Start button and you shouldn't have to install that hack just to use it. -
yeah I did it by the book. I was stuck with AMD graphics, couldnt switch back to integrated for anything... Installed the graphics drivers 3 different ways as well. I can see the potential and I'd keep it just to learn if it If it was possible to switch between cards. I've been on the windows 8 train since the beginning installing every version so far on spare laptops or in virtual machines of some sort, still havent gotten the graphics right. I guess that's what Acronis is for. -
My experience with previous Windows versions is that you often have to wait some time after RTM for drivers to come out.
I also haven't had much luck with drivers for new Windows versions on oem devices like laptops. Whatever OS it came out is as far as the drivers ever went. I'd be very surprised if HP released Win 8 drivers for the 2XXX series. -
Me too, I got everything working in Windows 8 except the AMD switchable graphics. Before I got the AMD graphics driver correct it was running OK on Intel graphics. Bit no way to switch between and stuck on AMD after those drivers were installed. I need the laptop on road so need the Intel option for battery saving. Overall having Win8 on my ENVY 17 2280NR for three days I thought it sucked raw eggs. Truly an abomination of mixed format interfaces (Metro or whatever its called today and old desktop dialogue boxes) - a waste of my time. Glad to get back to Win 7.
-
It mat be worth to keep an eye on this thread on HP support forums: Windows 8 drivers for HP notebooks with switchable graphics. - HP Support Forum
Some HP laptops already received official drivers for w8. There's also the option of Leshcat drivers, though I've not tried yet. -
The drivers page has been updated with Windows 8 drivers: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...dv7-6xxx-envy-14-2xxx-envy-17-2xxx-intel.html
-
There are no official drivers for the Envy 17 2XXX compatible for the Windows 8 yet. If you look closely the Envy 17 is not listed on the drivers forum under the AMD Graphics section.
-
So, keep an eye on it too....
-
Hi,
I was wondering if you made any progress with the switchable graphics / heating problem in ubuntu ?

Just to let you know that HP is hosting a discussion, on November 28, on their official forums to discuss Windows 8 including updating your existing Windows 7 notebook to Windows 8.
I am sure most of you would be interesting to join the discussion and congratulate them for the amazing work they have done so far, providing with the appropriated support and drivers of their existing models...(sarcasm
)
Twitter chat session will also be available for the same subject on November 13.

hi there ...
i am soory but i am new to these forums >>> i have aquestion ... i get a hp envy 3d 17 from ebay and it came without a glasses , i already have an nvidia p854 glass ...
could it be work on the laptop cause i try to paired it with the laptop but no sucsses ,
my laptop is win7 i7 8GB RAM .
please need ahelp with that ,
best regards -
I suspect there's a LOT of people here with glasses they don't use. You need active glasses that have batteries in them.
I have two pair that I don't use now that I have a 3D TV. (One came with my laptop, the other I bought for $68 on fleaBay.) RealD glasses you get in the movie theatre work with my TV.
-
Somehow, I can PM anyone...the text box is grayed out and there is no way for me to type. Gonna have to give you whatever answer I can right here. Go into Control panel...open the Sound applet. Click on the recording tab. By default, the Integrated Mic Array is default for "recording" When your headphones are plugged in...do they show up? Can you make them default? The whole object that HP had with this setting is that you could run Skype or even play internet games with headphones that didn't need a mic. See if you can enable the mic on your headset this way...
-
I have given up with the switchable graphics on the 2280NR model. The heat is still ridiculous on anything but Intel graphics.
-
Has anyone successfully swapped their optical drive for a third hard drive in their Envy 17?
Trying to find a caddy that would fit. Would a generic 9.5mm slot-in caddy work? -
If you cannot find a caddy, I would recommend using rubber double stick tape.. I have used this for my SSD on my Envy 17-3290nr and it works just as good as the caddy! Just make sure you use tape at both ends and down the middle.. Also make sure it is "Rubber" and not the black electrical style tape.. Should be able to find it at any hardware store..
Good Luck! -
I bought the same thing, works like a charm. I was disappointed when I couldn't just plug in the headphones straight up.
-
Here is the caddy I used to add my second drive:

Thanks for the tips Gunny, Alex!
I already have two drives in the machine though, so I'm looking to replace the DVD with a third hard drive.
Only one I've been able to find mentioning the Envy 17 specifically (although not the 2xxx series) is this one:
SATA 2nd Hard Drive HDD SSD Caddy Adapter For HP Envy 17 17t Series 17-3270nr | eBay
Contacted the seller to figure out if it will fit - hopefully get a reply soon. -
Sorry if this has been aksed before: did anyone try the graphics drivers from leshcatlabs.net ← Keeping it simple with Windows 8 yet? I have an Envy 17-2110eg and I am considering upgrading to Windows 8. But with all the graphic problems (no switchable graphics etc.) I want to be sure everything is working.
-
someone lock this thread until there can be a post saying that we've solved the issue of switchable graphics in win8
-
You're assuming that all of the 3 people that want Windows 8 own Envy's.
