Is quite simple to find it.
Find the board model ( picture from board, both sides, with a good resolution).
Get the Repair manual and look the hardware sheets
I dont know the board exact model from the 3xxx models to search for this.
-
High res is very hard to find however the mobo numbers are:
665934-001 System board equipped with the Intel HM65 chipset and 6770M graphics subsystem for use only on computer models equipped with a 3D display assembly (includes 1 GB of discrete graphics subsystem memory and replacement thermal material)
689999-001 System board equipped with the Intel HM76 chipset and 7850M graphics subsystem for use only on computer models equipped with a 3D display assembly (includes 1 GB of discrete graphics subsystem memory and replacement thermal material)
Which chip am I looking for? -
Yes
I need the motherboard code.
By the way..
I decompile the envy 3000 series bios and they are completely different hardware.
They have this inside their bios at graphics choices.

I DOUBT THIS..
Doing some research I find that the acer ACER_8950G have the same video card from envy 2xxx series without 3d.
Well, the Acer have almost the same electronic design than our devices ( audio card, network card, usb3 are different). Same the internal bios are similar.
Seems this device have the same problem we have. Just the intel being primary and no choice of disable the intel.
Someone know if the ACER_8950G have troubles like the envy with amd catalyst driver? Or if ACER_8950G can bood using full uefi boot?
IF yes, MAYBE is possible to do something..
But about the 3000 series. Forget it.. -
We need find similar notebooks with our graphic cards that have different behaviours. Then we can do something.
Different hardware have different ways of deal with the same thing. We cant use them to do nothing. -
some diferences from ACER to our devices inside the bios at GRAPHIC level.

Hi,
It's been a while since I posted here. I bought a ENVY 2280NR (2D only model) back in 2011 and its run great ever since, being my main work horse every day.
Now I experimented with a new empty main hard disk and installing Win10 tech pre build 9926 to see how that would run, having been using original Win7 since purchase. (Never liked Win8+ so never tried).
Win10 installed effortlessly without any HP drivers using just the Windows ISO file off a USB boot install. Some drivers initially missing downloaded themselves in background such as AMD card driver, Intel graphics card driver etc. After all driver downloads completed I was looked at device manager and had just one unknown device on system - that Win10 didn't solve. It was the hard disk drive guard driver, so I Googled it and downloaded sp48408 from Hp web site, and that issue was cleared as well. So all good so far but I have following key issues I need some help on please as this isn't my expertise and was hoping someone could give me some pointers?
- No subwoofer sound
- No second drive recognized - the other hard disc in second bay is not showing in Win10.
- No way to switch graphics (intel/AMD) or tell which graphics card is being used? Both show on device manager as running OK.
Are the above 3 points because I am missing some HP or graphics drivers? Are the drivers even available?
How can I tell which graphics card is being used? I guess its the Intel as the fan is off and machine not getting hot. How can I switch between them?
Appreciate any help guys as I am learning. Back to the Win7 install disc for now and all is good. -
I've tried searching the thread and haven't found anything regarding Windows 10. I was curious if anyone has tried Windows 10 insider preview on our laptops?
-
@Acidblast and @palatkik.
I installed Windows 10 10074 on a VHD and booted to it.
It needs the original beats audio driver for the sound to work properly.
Not sure about a non recognised other harddisk issue. I only have 1 drive but I suggest to install the Intel drivers in charge of harddisk stuff to see if that helps.
Switchable graphics = The ones that get downloaded from MS work after a few restarts.
There are a few bugs related to the switchable drivers but it works.
Other than that the 3D Drive Guard is missing ... which is normal.
There is a touchpad issue with the LED light constantly on. I suggest people install Windows 10 and report this so MS fixes it. I opened an Insider thread for this and wrote on the Win 10 feedback.
Cant think of anything else right now.
Edit: I have encountered a few bugs on the official WU AMD drivers on 10074 and have made a bug report over on Windows Insider. If someone shares the same issue .. go ahead and post over there.
MS takes good care of bugs.

Yes, agree with all above, what I have done so far is on an empty main hard drive now install build 10074 and found same as my post above. I used the old HP Envy Beats audio driver from my original purchase worked the speakers OK. I also installed latest Intel and AMD drivers from their web sites. Win10 downloads drivers by itself without asking and most things seem to work. So far I cannot see how to enable switchable graphics - but I am still trying. Both graphics drivers say running OK. The LED off light on touchpad issue is also seen here. As for the 2nd drive not showing I understand from search it is because from original HP Envy install as two drives it is set as Dynamic (seen under Computer Management) whereas Win10 seems to want Basic? Not sure about this yet, but guess I need a tool to switch from Dynamic to Basic without loosing the data and this won't affect performance?
With the 2nd Dynamic vs Basic disc to be sorted and the switchable graphics to be understood- hopefully both will be OK as everything else looks good, I will happily upgrade to Win10 RTM from Win7 as soon as I can as it looks pretty good so far in this pre build.

With my limited computer skills, but interest in finding out if my ENVY 2280NR will be able to run Win10 from Win7 I found the following:
I have got the switchable graphics running OK on Win 10 build 10074. Using amd-catalyst-omega-14.12-with-dotnet45-win8.1-64bit download from AMD site along with amd-catalyst-omega-14.12-sb-sata-ahci-win8.1-win7 installed the configure switchable graphics options now let you choose which apps run on the high speed graphics or power saver, unlike earlier version of AMD I run on my Win7 that just lets you turn high power graphics on or off. I tested it with an app (Google Earth) and with GPU-Z I could see the AMD kicked in only when Google Earth ran, otherwise laptop ran off the Intel. For some reason when AMD does kick in, Intel is also shown to be using CPU power by the GPU-Z app as if resources are shared, whereas I thought the laptop would have used one graphics card or the other?
At one stage AMD suggested I install amd-catalyst-14.4-64bit-win8.1-win8-win7-whql-aug.exe as an update to ver 14.12, but when I did this the switchable graphics program display seemed to revert to an earlier type like I have on a Win7 laptop and also I was getting some blank screens of death, so I gave up and went back to 14.12.
The Device Manager says everything is working OK. But as pointed out before I can see the HP on screen display doesn't seem to run after installing the drivers that came with ENVY, and the mouse-pad light is always red with the mouse-pad always on.
A few bugs as well, I think are Win10 related? When I boot up Win10 the screen starts flashing light and dark blue indefinitely? Only fix I have found is to pull power cable and run on battery to get to login screen, then power plug in again and all OK. Second bug is the Win10 Start Menu doesn't seem to come up when clicking on icon or pressing Windows key - making it pretty well useless! Only fix I found for that was to uninstall the AMD drivers - then no more flashing screens or missing start menu. I think I'll give up now until Win10 RTM is out. -
The Get Windows 10 (GWX) icon doesn't appear on my HP Envy taskbar - no clues from Microsoft why, but a fair assessment made here?
http://www.eightforums.com/windows-...le-see-icon-taskbar-reserve-windows-10-a.html -
I've received the get Windows 10 icon and I have already registered to get my free copy
-
Have you tried installing the Win7 Synaptics driver to see if it fixes the problem?
I'm still undecided on whether I want to put Win10 on this laptop or not. Win7 is still perfectly fine for my needs and the only reason I would go to Win10 is for better gaming support for games like GTAV (once all of the related bugs and problems are worked out).
The laptop is running fantastic as is right now with the UnifL 14.12 video drivers. I don't miss fixed switching at all now. With the 2860QM set at 99% in the power settings (disables Turbo) and the 6850M overclocked 700/1200 I can game all day with no heating problems. CS:GO runs perfect at 1920x1080 max settings.
If I can get another 2 years out of this machine I'll be happy. -
Are you able to overclock and use 120hz? If I reset the intel gfx to re-enable 120hz, afterburner doesnt let me change clocks.
-
When win10 comes out, what should the graphics in the bios be set to as far as muxed/muxless/switching etc
-
I've never got the Win10 icon show on my Win7 task bar for upgrade option, but I installed Win10 build 10130 Insider Prev using a new install/hard disc boot ISO from USB and from what I see vs previous Win 10 build now everything seems to work. The switchable graphics works, Win10 automatically downloaded AMD drivers 15.2+ without me asking and they just work - with automatic switching depending on which software is being run (something Win7 didn't do - at least mine didn't - it was on or off for all software). The synaptic s mouse works, as does the on/off light. Sound works using the original Beats / IDT drivers. The device manager shows no driver conflicts and all working.
I am very keen to upgrade now, should I wait for a later build or will this one be good to go? -
Yes, 120Hz and overclocking has always worked for me. The catch is that with the UnifL 14.12 drivers I'm using the .2993 Intel driver from 14.4. That is the only driver that has let me keep 120Hz, any newer drivers only show 60Hz in the options.
-
Does 120hz work with the windows update drivers?
You should stay with this build if you are able to upgrade to the final version in the future without losing settings.. otherwise I would wait for final build. -
Running Build 10159.
Running well .. minimal issues.
2 Drivers missing after install: HP Wireless Key i.e. the silly light on the button (driver available online) HP 3D Drive Guard (driver available online)
IDT needs the Beats driver else it only uses the 2 speakers without the sub.
AMD + Intel MS provided driver works fine. It is obviously dynamic switching as fixed switching doesn't exist anymore. 120Hz is available when you reset the Intel adapter and pick 120Hz.
App profiles are locked as they normally are with AMD drivers. Will unlock it at some point and release via leshcatlabs.net
Note: I have not tried 14.4 (last fixed switching driver) on this build. However on the previous Builds it did not work and I am not expecting it to ever work again.
Current Synaptics driver does not allow 2 Finger Scrolling in all XAML based apps. This includes the Start Menu. This is the biggest issue I currently face.
Chances are that it will be fixed prior to release since scrolling (more or less) worked with the last preview build. -
With build 10130 I found the Wireless light on the key to be working OK.
Additionally I found the Synaptics driver recognized my two finger actions, albeit I am not clear on what XAML apps are referred to above. -
My 2090 3d is still rockin along, with upgraded memory and SSD.
Have there been any more unlocked BIOSes that came out which allow UEFI boot? I'm on 2111 rev 3.5 F.1C right now. -
Not that I know of. Not sure it's even possible. UEFI is rather large compared to a traditional BIOS, so there might not even be room for it in the ROM.
-
Hi VonCrisp,
Do you noticed any problem with heat under Windows 10?
I've not yet done temperature readings, but the laptop seems very hot in comparison with my original HP Windows 7. -
i'm gonna go ahead and take the plunge and install win 10. I want to do a fresh install. How do I keep all the custom Hp software like webcam software and such?
-
Just completed the upgrade to win 10. I haven't don't a fresh install yet. I have noticed that the fans keep going non stop and it's hella annoying. I tried to adjust the fans with HP coolsense but win 10 said it "blocked that app for my protection." Any ideas how to get Coolsense working or make the fans run on low?
-
Haven't had an issues whilst using the 10240 build. Maybe you are creating some kind of situation where the AMD is being taxed more for rendering certain applications?
Which apps do you have open? Also you cannot compare to Win 7 just like that.
You might have had fixed switching drivers on Windows 7.
Windows 10 only works on dynamic switching. If you are comparing dynamic switching drivers from Win 7 with Win 10 then it is another matter.
Fritz was looking into this with Donovan but he doesn't seem active anymore.
Latest BIOS is F1D but it isn't public. -
Voncrisp how do enable dynamic switching in win 10?
-
It is automatically enabled with all new AMD drivers. There has been no more fixed switching since Catalyst 14.4.
My temperature is fine under Windows 10. I am running the WU AMD drivers.
XAML apps are a bit buggy but that is a problem with the AMD drivers.
I have found a way to accelerate the XAML apps and give the more stability. Again this is an issue with the driver acceleration. (or lack thereof)
Will post here once I can confirm that these aren't just placebo findings. -
So that would explain why under win 10 I saw both the AMD CCC and Intel graphics in the system tray at the same time.
How was you fan noise? Mine was going nuts. And my system was slower then molasses. -
My fan was totally fine.
Indeed CCC and the Intel CC both appear at the same time because it is using dynamic switching now. Ie your Intel card is your primary display now.
AMD only gets used if an application needs acceleration.
Not sure about your fan. Maybe coolsense is messing with it. I would remove it.
Better yet I would format and clean install Windows 10.
Windows 7 HP had way too much junk on it.
The speed is fine. XAML apps are a bit buggy but I put it down to the AMD drivers. -
Thank you VonCrisp. I will do a clean install of win 10 and see what happens. I just did the upgrade the first time b/c it was free.
-
I just did the upgrade to Win 10 then I did the clean install of Win 10. Windows is asking me to update my AMD 6850 drivers. Should I let it? or should I download the drivers from AMD?
-
Windows Update drivers are working fine for me! : )
-
thanks VonCrisp. Everything is working smoothly now. The fans are quiet as well
I forgot to mention that my 'mute button' light is always orange (off) but the key still functions. Any suggestions? -
I just noticed that device manager in win 10 shows that it can't find a driver for a device. Here are the hardware details...
Device ACPI\HPQ0004\3&11583659&0
Any ideas? -
Got it thank you.
Anybody upgraded to win10 yet and got switchable graphics to work? -
Already mentioned it on the leshcatlabs forums ; )

Am glad the fan issue is gone with a fresh install! -
Thanks @VonCrisp. Any ideas why my 'mute button' light is always orange (off) but the key still functions?

You are missing a driver but I am not sure which one it is yet.
It might be this one:
HP Quick Launch
sp59927.exe
But I am not 100% certain. -
Problem solved. I installed the original Hp audio driver sp52562. Which coincidentally sounds way better then the windows audio driver.

Good, good!
So once Win 10 is installed from scratch only 3 extra drivers are needed:
Original IDT sound driver.
SP58720 HP Wireless Button Driver.
SP64144 HP 3D DriveGuard
Unless I missed something.
Am not happy with the supplied synaptics driver. XAML apps don't scroll well via 2 finger scrolling. Hopefully they will release a newer version soon. -
I did a clean install before using the pre-releases and I couldn't get the second drive recognized as it was listed as foreign/dynamic. Now using final release full Win10 install of ISO from MediaCreationToolx64 (the Upgrade PC option kept hanging so gave up) from my dynamic D drive onto existing basic Win7 C drive everything installed without a problem in 50 minutes. Entire system apps/data/wallpaper all same as Win7 before and both disks recognized. All the hardware seems to be working as well. Very happy with Win10 on this machine. (I have 2D version - not the 3D).
