Since it runs it ocassionally at 30fps when the CPU is at full power then yes, without throttling it would run fine. But then the CPU throttles down and I get 5fps.

So after spending 45 minutes on the phone with hp. Dont really know if i have a solid response for you guys and gals... The gentleman i spoke with was with the exucutive resolutions dept... he stated that

    1. hp was aware of the issues at hand. (duhh)

    2. other companies were having same issues.. (duhh)

    3. that they are currently working on a solution to problem.

    4. no timeframe for update, but kept telling me to look for bios update..

    5. he said that they would eventually have a fix for solution..

    6. also stated that he could not discuss the exact details as it would breach a contract of some sort... whatever that means...

finally after pissing him off which i found interesting.. (disgruntled he sounded) he stated "did you ever think it could be sandy bridge" i dont know if he meant that to throw me off or possibly hint at a intel problem not playing nice with certain bios's in computers....

either which way i did not get a def answer... i asked him (matt) why hp would sell a laptop knowing it was broke... basicially no answer to that...
but he did assure me it was being worked on.. take that for what its worth..

and again he said at end of conversation, "keep checking hp.com/support for a update in firmware/bios.... maybe he slipped a little and maybe it is a intel sb problem?

I did a support chat and the rep basically said the exact same thing. Although I had to explain the issue like three times for them to actually understand it. Waited a while for the rep to speak with her "executive supervisor" (what ever that means) and she confirmed that HP was aware of the issue. She then proceeded to tell me to check hp.com/support frequently for a fix. Typical response...

I just wanted to pop in and state that I must have the most perfect Envy 17 3D released as I've yet to have a single problem to date; thought y'all would like to hear that out there somewhere in my hands the perfect machine does exist!

You can download the new HP CoolSense 2.0 upgate via the 2100 drivers page. Wonder if this stops the throttling issue.

aays06 and mcchea, appreciate you guys checking. I'll stay hopeful now that HP did say a fix is on the way.

Oh, and a very big thanks to Crimsoned!!! ;) I am sure he had a lot to do with this as he was in contact with HP Research & Development Team. :) aays06 what the Executive Rep. told you confirms to us why C rimsoned's insiders are now hush hush.... must be legal policy. Still, they are aware and working on it!

Installed it. Gives you three options...AUTO-ON-OFF

Auto tries to determine whether the machne is stationary or moving. ON is performance mode and off...you can shut off Coolsense. Didn't keep it installed long enough to test with throttling issue...Went back to 1.0.1.4 with new Framework

I don't think so! I have always believed that the throttling is mainly Intel...now vendors are gonna have to fix whatever is wrong...if they can! Time will tell. I emailed Sergio the day that I had my keyboard installed...he said he would look into it...maybe he brought it to the other techs and determined something might be wrong. Some of us have pushed as many buttons as we can with this...Crimsoned, aays06...if this gets fixed...it will be a team effort...Everyone...keep up the pressure and the faith...don't let them sleep on this!

Sounds like HP trying to pass the buck. There is none of this throttling in the Dell laptops that I've seen running the 2630QM so no, they don't all do it. If ThrottleStop can tell the 2630QM in the HP Envy to run at full speed and it does then obviously there is nothing wrong with the CPU.

Sandy Bridge is a proven performer and this problem has nothing to do with Intel.

Time to go check out some more log files. Thanks Bobmitch.

There was a couple of random looking values in the first log files that Bobmitch posted so I asked him if he was running any other monitoring software when logging and he mentioned he was using the Intel Turbo side bar gadget. I asked him to try testing again with this gadget turned off and the results in his second set of RealTemp and ThrottleStop log files look excellent.

During the second set of tests, with the help of ThrottleStop, his CPU was running exactly how a 2630QM should be running. There were no dropouts at all down to 798 MHz like he was constantly seeing during his first log files when not using ThrottleStop.

There are some games that are not CPU dependent that I'm sure can run smoothly even with the CPU throttled down to 798 MHz but there are going to be other games and apps that are not going to run nearly as well. Any application that tries to use the CPU and GPU at the same time will need to be tested.

Any 3DMark benchmark with the CPU throttled vs not throttled might be interesting if anyone is bored and wants to do some further testing.

    Uninstall Coolsense 2.0

Download the old Software Framework first

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...3&product=5069367&sw_lang=&key=null&site=null

...run the installer and remove all of the old Framework. Then run the installer again...this will install the older version...

Then download the Software Framework installer from April

HP Software Framework HP ENVY 17t-2000 CTO 3D Edition Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Install this on top of the older version and you should be good to go

I actually saw a few 97C temperature numbers in the RealTemp log file you posted. Surprisingly, even at that crazy temperature, the CPU was still doing its best to run at 2600 MHz which shows that it was still using lots of turbo boost. You still hadn't reached the Intel designed thermal throttling point.

If you ever reach that point for even a millisecond, RealTemp in the Thermal Status area at the bottom will show the word LOG which indicates that at least one thermal throttling episode was logged on that core. If RealTemp shows OK then that means everything was OK and your CPU was running within the Intel spec. The word HOT indicates that thermal throttling is presently in progress. You will rarely if ever see that because thermal throttling happens so fast that Intel CPUs do a great job of keeping the core temperature right at the thermal throttling temperature without going over even during extreme conditions. All of this information is stored within the CPU so you can run RealTemp after the fact and it will still be able to see if there was any throttling by reading the LOG bit directly from the processor.

Coolsense is part of HP Software framework....

    1. Uninstall Coolsense
    2. Try running the installer for the latter version of software framework (April 2011)...choose UNINSTALL
    3. Run the installer for the original version of software framework from Feb, once you do this...Coolsense should be back in the HP folder
    4. Run the installer for the April version of software framework and everything will get updated

    That should do it

    Hello,

I am looking for the laptop 17" of my dreams!

Since 4 years i used a IBM T60 15 begins to show signs of weakness ...
Working through the Internet so I spend much time on it I did not need power before but since I begin to got a Reflex and Lightroom software is different!
    So I am looking for:
    - A large screen 17 "wide for comfort for work and for films
    - The graphics card is a priori not important because I do not play (or more)
    - No need for blue ray
    - USB 3
    - Sound quality (although I know it's still rather limited)
    - Design

I spotted two laptop that we seem to suit me
    HP Pavilion dv7-6090sf, 17.3 "to 999 €: HD6770M, Core i7 Sandy Bridge, 1 TB, USB 3.0

    for 200 euros or more:
    HP Envy 17-2000ef, 17.3 "Full HD to 1199 €: Core i7 Sandy HD6850M, USB 3.0, 1TB

The difference is on full HD, do you see a big difference with a regular screen? ( specially for web surfing and not only for HD movie)

I can be asked to carry the computer in hot and bright spots, I'm living in Barcelona so I really want to enjoy the terrace with my laptop without feel my hand burning or crash of the laptop
From where my attention brought to the screen quality and the cooling capacity.
And it is why i am scare about the Envy 17" because according to the review it can become warm

Thank you in advance for your advice and I am also open to any proposal on the other computer.

PS : I am french so my english is not so well ,)

    @ Zorro!
If you use your laptop outside I would definitely recommend a 3D display. It's just so much brighter. The 1920 resolution is very useful if you cut movies or work on pictures. For gaming the smaller resolution would be better because full HD takes a lot of GPU power which is not there in a notebook.
Right now I cannot say anything about my Envy how it works when temperatures grow higher than 30°C but we'll see soon ;-)

Today I'm actually considering sending my Envy back to HP, trying to consider if I should or not. After a long discussion with my father about the throttling he thinks I should, feels wrong paying so much money for a product that doesn't deliver what it's suppose to do :(

Maybe that throttling test should also be pushed on the DV6/7 Quad board...being that the Envy and those two computers run the same CPU.

I know people are overclocking their DV6/7's...and I have not heard about any issues.

So far, the only major difference I see was that it looks like HP is replacing TriDef 3D software with their own version of 3D software for movies, photos and games. No changes in video card, etc from the look at the driver downloads

Go with another brand maybe, I really don't know cos I love HP and I don't wanna have another brand but... I don't wanna have throttling either on a laptop I've paid so much for. And it doesn't seem like an idea to replace it with a new envy since that's just gonna have the same issue and maybe more problems then the one I have.

An other thing that confuses me, I was going trough the Swedish HP site and can no longer find my model the 2090. I can't find support for it either like what the hell, not only does the HP site suck at least ours it's super hard to navigate around, now I can't even find my model to get support... Oh my gosh...

EDIT: Found my model after a lot of searching, but no good support contact or anything... urgh omg.

Decisions decisions. My laptop is coming tomorrow. I'm debating on just returning also. They clearly know that a problem exists but will they fix it? They clearly don't want to give a def answer. I got such a good deal on it I would hate to give that up.

MiRRe89, you have have been here such a short time, yet you are already so much involved in our little forum/thread. :) It was great watching you ask your questions and learn so so much. So yeah, it would be dissapointing to see you leave after all that. :(

Anyway, as Bobmitch mentioned you should carefully weigh what you have and what you plan on getting. I think if you really love the Envy, and you are saying it playing your games pretty well....then I'd suggest using unclewebb's Throttlestop to play your GPU/CPU intensive games and applications until, or if ever HP comes up with the BIOS fix. From a couple members recently, HP did say they are working on it! So.... if you can live with Throttlestop and in the chance a fix from HP comes along, I'd suggest to keep it. Ultimately, you have to make the decision.....so good luck, and ask whatever you like if you need more help clarifying the decision. :)

I also got a nice deal on mine, with 10% off which in my eyes was good and free delivery, no cosmetic flaws and no problems besides the throttling which hasn't really affected me in a way I can tell it's there without seeing in a log, but it still bothers me.

Aw that warmed my heart, silly me but it did! I really like it here and I'm so glad I found this forum, you guys are so AWESOME, I've gotten so much help here and so fast responses I couldn't have gotten that anywhere else.

True, I love my Envy SO much, It breaks my heart seeing this problems on her it really does. But I've been thinking all day about doing it or not, I'm gonna keep her, my baby :p

I mean I could never tell I had throttling if I didn't see it in the log, it hasn't really showed in games etc. Of course GTA IV lagged but I read probs about that on Win7, but it might have been throttling, I wanna try it with throttlestop gonna do that today.

And another note, I played Warfare 2 just now for about 40 minutes, I had only ONE drop, it was on a steady 2.0+ rest of the time, might not be a super demanding game but still.

So yea, summarizing. I wanna keep it, I love it and there's no other problems. If I change brand who says I'm not gonna get throttling on that one too, and maybe worse problems and annoying cosmetic flaws.

ThrottleStop will be used when playing, hope it's not gonna burn my laptop haha ^^

Spoke with my case manager yesterday...told her about the 2070NR showing dual 5400rpm drives on the web page (when it was 7200rpms last week), while the PDF file still shows 7200 rpm dual HDD's.

Went out there today...and the webpage has been corrected back to dual 7200 rpm HDD's.

Good news for those still looking.

Yea guess we all have to look at it "besides throttling" a shame but it's the way it is ^^ I was SUPER afraid I was gonna get dead pixels in mine haha I even had a nightmare that I had SEVERAL dead pixels in my screen and since dreams are weird they jumped around on the screen and stuff ^^ Anyways it was cosmetically flawless and besides the throttling no issues, maybe one should just be happy bout that :)

    Hey Zorro

First, you're English is great, so don't worry about it!

Second, I also read many reviews before buying my laptop but now I realize that the reviews I read (which talked about the Envy 17 getting hot), were not talking about the 2nd generation Intel Envys, those reviews (that I read) were of the 1st generation Intel Envys. Many people here have confirmed that the new 2nd generation Envys are much cooler than the 1st generation ones.

Last, you talked about the screen. It sounds like for what you do, the HD screen is really important. But, I've heard that the DV7 now has the HD screen as an option, at least here in America. But, the Envy screen is supposed to be one of the brightest and it also represents RGB color about as well as a laptop screen can, so I doubt the DV7 screen is as good as the Envy screen (especially the Envy 3d).

    Good luck with your choice!

So far I've noticed two things. When screens lifted up or opened right below hp logo on bottom is slight bump out. Also on keyboard near arrow keys slight bump out also. No dead or stuck pixels though

I wonder if you are talking about a warp or a scoop down in the metal...that reminds me of the original Envy 17 3D back in the days, The members in the orginal Envy 17 3D thread found out HP just over tightened the screws in the battery compartment. All we had to do was slightley loosen the screw and the metal was pretty much flush. Hope that is the issue. Not sure about the one next to the arrow key, maybe a photo upload would help.

Above the keyboard where the seam would be at back of computer. And my directional keys has the slight bump out also. But I believe someone said they had hp come in fix that?
