Bobmitch has the Care Pack from HP where they come to your home for a fix if possible. He had a raised keyboard near the touch pad. Not sure if you have the Care Pack, but even if you don't, its worth asking HP to send someone, not sure if they will though. I know, not the best way to start off, but hopefully the rest of the laptop works perfectly.

Yes I have in home care pack. I'm sending through phone now so I cannot upload photo.
-
Lucky guy.
Yeap, call them up and get them to send you a tech to your home to fix it.
I will be buying the Care Pack myself if my Envy as any sort of fixable defect. I do not want to send her in short of a Dead Pixel and I wonder if they can also change out the display at your home with Care Pack, that would be soo soo worth it.

About to run throttling tests.
-
That is what I'm really leaning towards at the moment....
I had posted in the DV6/7 thread that it is really down to three computers...and they are within $60 of each other (assuming my $500 coupon tranfers over)....between $940.99 and 1020.99 + tax.
All have 1080p screens, 7200 rpm HDD's of some sort, 2630 i7's, and 6 GB's of RAM.
What is funny is that I'm not a heavy PC gamer....so the throttling won't impact me.....EXCEPT.... I would like to finally try Flight Simulator....and I would be PISSED if the one game I wanted to try was really getting cut back. -
ThrottleStop could be an easy solution if that happened, seems to work for all who have tried it
-
Well, thanks to Throttlestop you should be able to play Flight Sim. effortlessly on the Envy 17 3D SB.
P.S. MiRRe89, jinx! Buy me a Coke! lol.
In case you are not familiar with that saying, it means we said the same thing at the same time.
KJ
-
Oh I'm familiar with it alright
We use that in Sweden too and especially when I was younger haha, OH and I would so buy you a Coke if I lived in USA ;D
-
so here is something weird... i went to shove a blu ray movie into the drive to make sure it worked and i could not get the disc to go in... so i pressed the eject button and a disc came out of envy.. it reads factory test disc.. anyone know what that is exactly or why it is in my machine?
-
I'm still amazed that they can't manage to make a single laptop without any bumps or dents. Everybody else does it, but not HP.
-
They must have forgotten to take it out :O Never heard of something like that before.
-
Actually mine don't have any bumps or dents, I think they do manage but maybe not with as many as they should, since all laptops they send out SHOULD be free from those stuff.
-
Played the disc seems to be a low quality 3d disc. All in Chinese dancing etc. Lol
-
lol pathermark me too!
and Killa Joe, MiRRe89 this is very curious to me -- it seems HP should answer the question "should the Envy 17 run Flight Sim yes or no?" only if the answer is "no" should we turn to the throttlestop work-around! -
That is funny...(well...it is actually kinda bad...but still funny)
What software is on it?
Edit....just saw your resposne...
One word:
YouTube -
I will be furious if HP's flagship consumer laptop can't run Fligt Sim...
-
Can you please explain to me cos I don't really now much about Flight sim, is it SUPER demanding or why shouldn't it run fine on the Envy? -
First of all thank for your accurate reply and also previously DVP,
i didn't find the DV7 with HD ( maybe it doesn't exist with french keyboard),
but according from you answer the Envy 7 look perfect for me.
But i don't really like/need 3D so i wonder if the version with no 3D : HP Envy 17-2000ef ( cheaper) got the same the quality & light of the 3D version? -
Apoxxx, yeah, but you know what kills me? Every HP laptop I buy at Costco, usually a dv7.... is built perfectly solid, no defects what so ever! Case is completely sealed, and trackpad is nicely below the top of the case...so why are "premium hand made" laptops with defects, be it minor?
Lol, I'm thinking, maybe they should program a computer to build our Envy to perfection.
KJ
-
panthermark -- if I were you I would try and get an answer from HP on that point! I can't think of a better test case and basis for discussion
-
OMG!!!!!
Imagine auctioning it off on Ebay!!! This is like a colletctor's item, LOL>
KJ
-
I agree! I suggested he auction it on Ebay! Wonder how much some bids will come in, but still, I'd love to see it, and see if HP responds to you putting it up on YouTube! haha.

has anyone here tried installing Linux on their Envy 17? i have the dual hard disk option and with windows in the SSD i made a partition on my 7200 rpm drive in which i allocated a portion to windows and another portion to Centos Linux. After the installing when i restart my computer i get the word 'GRUB' displayed on the screen with a blinking underscore and it wont let me type anything on the screen. i am wondering whether this is a hardware issue--some of the drivers for the linux installation may not even be available for the envy 17. can someone please shed more light on this?
-
MiRRe89 and others interested in dead pixel quality checks -- here is a great litttle tool to help with that inspection!
Dead Pixel Buddy Download - Softpedia -
It would probably end up throttling while manufacturing the Envy 17 and messing something up...
-
Is that to see if there's dead pixels that my eye can't see or am I stupid?
Cos I can't see any dead pixels and I had one on my first HDX and I noticed that one right of the bet, it was red but I tried so many things to get it working again but hell no it was dead
I replaced that HDX luckily I couldn't live with a dead pixel!
And again, can someone explain the Flight Sim thing? Why wouldn't it run on Envy is it like Super demanding? -
its just a way to isolate the various colors to make it easier to spot a dead pixel. for example if you have a pixel stuck red, and you are viewing photo with lots of red in it, then you won't see the stuck pixel. but if you use this tool to throw up a pure white screen ,then you will see the stuck red pixel easily.
Flight sim has apparently been identified as a CPU intensive game that exposes the Envy's tendancy to throttle. we need more data here, but this game appears to be a good real-world test -
Yeah I know. I mean, I don't mind the cosmetic flaws as they are very very minor, but still, they shouldn't be there at all. Almost like it's hand built by unskilled workers.
-
Also track pad not sitting flush. Uhgggg too many things wrong. Back to hp it goes. Sorry guys. But I'm keeping that test disc.
-
Well I can say this, just tested GTA IV without throttlestop and had occasionally lag that made it very unpleasant to play, checked my log file, even tho there wasn't super many drops it still must have been throttling.
So started up ThrottleStop and GTA IV again, less lag but there's still some hard to explain but if I drive a car, if I concentrate my eyes at the car it seems fine but if I focus on the hole picture it's like the rest chop up (hope it's the right word.) Now I have read A LOT about GTA IV lagging on Win7 so throttling and throttlestop might not be the hole deal here, throttlestop sure stopped some of the lag but it's still not pleasant to play, maybe there's an update coming to fix it on win7 maybe not.
Maybe that can be something to have in mind for Flight sim tho since GTA IV is demanding for both CPU/GPU?
And oh, checked the log after playing with TS, it was steady on 2.5GHz so rest of the lag might be cos it's not a friend with Win7. -
Just tested that program for dead pixels, seems my eyes didn't lie to me ^^ Couldn't see any dead pixels trough all the colors in the program, phuuu.
-
I'll ask when I talk to my case manager again.... I'm supposed to get another call in 2 to 3 business (from yesterday).
But I have a feeling my case manager will say something like....."The Envy 17 is an exceptional computer that is made with the highest quaility parts and materials and can play most modern games."
On a side note.......normally...I would be furious that it is taking so long, and that I have to jump through so many hoops to get my recalled computer swapped out.
But....at the rate they are going....I might be able to hold off until Ivy Bridge...or an Envy refresh (track pad?) hits the scene.
-
whoohoo panthermark way to keep the clickpad hopes alive!
MiRRe89 yay! glad your display is "a ok" now I wonder about those games. lol panthermark is probably right, there will be no statement about flight sim or GTA IV. But folks we shouldn't get too hung up on the game thing, really -- the Envy's 6850 is not the strongest GPU on the shelf, so the really GPU-intensive games are not going to play as well on the Envy as they will on a dedicated desktop or full-on gaming laptop in a larger package.
So before we claim that the Envy 17 should play Flight sim -- we need to see if the GPU is up to the task. I'm more interested in a test case where the game is CPU intensive and might cause the Envy to throttle, while the relatively modest 6850 GPU keeps up. -
I haven't played GTA IV myself, but I too heard its really the game itself than the computer. So you should be good. Now you just have to see if the makers of GTA IV have a fix for their game.

OK...
I have spend some appreciable time corresponding with uncleweb on the best uses of Throttlestop on our Envy systems. He recommended that I show you how I have Throttlestop set up in one of three scenarios. All three certainly stop the throttling...each scenario is based on better thermal performance...gives you all ideas on how you might set your systems up. You can find a new thread here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/579857-running-throttlestop-envy-17-sb.html#post7510955
Everyone...there is hope! Uncleweb...thanks again! -
great work Bobmitch! +1 rep
I hope you all will pardon me if I sneak in a break from the throttling discussions, and attempt to keep the "larger SSD" hopes alive: I find it curious that while the SSD choice has disappeared from the Envy 17 ordering page, the Envy 14 is available with a 256GB SSD. curious minds will feed on the possibility that this drive may be coming to the Envy 17, along with that elusive Clickpad update
-
Saw the thread, great work again, and thanks to you and unclewebb. I tried repping you there, but I still have to wait and spread it to others first, lol.

I think GTA IV should run fine, I mean I can play it on my HDX16 on Full HD but like medium on the rest but with lower res I can play it on high on everything else, runs fine, so I think it should run on an Envy if there was a fix for the Win7 issue.
True, I don't blame my baby for not running GTA IV ^^ -
Looks like the 14 already has the "Image Sensing" touchpad.
Also, speaking of Ivy Bridge, anyone know if it'll support 120Hz desktop? I wouldn't expect stereoscopic 3D on Intel, but it'd be nice for the desktop to stay at 120Hz when on the IGP. -
The envy 17 has 120Hz screen don't it?
-
Only the 3D version ships with one.
-
Yea I have that one, and saw 120Hz in some games so I had to just ask to be sure ^^
-
My HP support assistant showed a BIOS update like an hour ago and I installed it, anyone knows what that did? There was no info on any changes or anything so, just out of curiosity if anyone knows
And another update ehm of course I forgot what that was "/
-
Is it version F.08? That is the most recent according to the driver download page.
-
Hit your fn and escape key at the same time...brings up your serial number, model number and bios version. Last one I got was f.08 dated 3/11/2011
-
Funny it's only F.07 dated 2/11/2011.
Wow never knew about that, but it's F.07, 2/11/2011. -
Has anyone downloaded the Synaptics drivers 15.2.7 from Synaptics? Yes, I realize that I have lost the function to turn off my touchpad...but what I gained was great. I can now scroll up and down and side to side. There is a function where you take your thumb and forefinger and start narrow and spread them in a 45 degree angle outward and you expand the screen...or start spread out and bring to the middle of the touchpad to zoom in. It's called Scrybe. Loving this touchpad for what it can do now...
-
This is what it updated, some UEFI?
Attached Files:
-
-
I think those are in Windows update right? I recall seeing them there every time I check what windows wanna update. Do you think all will be loosing the function to turn the touchpad off cos I would love to be able to scroll with it but I need to turn it off some times cos I can at times when typing manage to move the mouse on the touchpad so I need to turn it off at times. But I can already expand my at least my firefox window by using the touchpad by holding to fingers on it and move them out.
Edit, OMG I didn't know it was possible to expand the icons on the desktop with the touchpad too, that was cool
bad thing is I can't find back to how I had them haha
-
Got the touchpad drivers directly from Synaptics
BTW
You can download bios f.08 for the 2090eo here:
