Any boot SSD/HDD had better be a quality unit, unless you want to reinstall your OS from scratch more sooner than later.
After all, you are not using the boot drive for media, are you?
BTW, you should have 60(min)-80GB for your OS.

Not sure you can boot from the 2nd HDD bay though. I'm pretty sure you can't in fact.

Yeah... The more I think about it, the more I'd have to pay.. I was looking at some SSD's... and not nearly all of them out there.. If I'm gonna get something, it's going to have to be worthy of use (Fast, won't crap out, etc).. So, I guess I'll just have to hold off on an SSD for now :/

You got it right, pay once and in the mean time just bite the bullet.
Just reading up in the forums about how many SSD's crap out on people, it makes me think the technology hasn't matured yet.

    ALTHOUGH,,,,
The SLC (single level cell) format is just like RAM flash, v/s the MLC (multi level cell) that so many people have problems with.
SLC SSD's are still quite expensive, comparable to RAM price's, and have the endurance, quality and performance built into them.

Intel held off for 1 year releasing the 520 series to make sure the SandForce 2281V81 controller worked properly, testing costs time and money, it reflects in the final price, and in the fact the series comes with a 5 year warranty!
If I was doing a boot drive, it would be a 80GB Intel 520 SATA III
For game and other media that rely on lots of READS and not so much WRITES,,,,,SATA II is fine for me.

After all, it about whats UNDER the hood, not the paint job.

Does anyone know where to buy the Envy 17 in Singapore? Check around but can't find anywhere yet.

    Appreciate your response a lot.

Thanks for clearing that up! The stability of the Drives was the main thing I'm wanting to be careful of... I don't want something that'll crap out in half a year.. With this in mind, I think I'll save up some cash and Buy a 520 series drive soon. I'll do some more research on my own, but you have really gotten me started off with what to look at. I've always been Intel Bias'd... But there's very valid reasoning behind it. It'd be nice to find out if the Envy17 can boot from a secondary drive.. However, if I'm going to get a 520 series drive that has Sata III (Which Seems likely), I'll be more than willing to switch the drives around.. Is there any guides here on the forums as to getting everything switched around (including the Envy 17 specific Drivers and all that)?

EDIT: One last Question, do I have to buy a cage for the SSD? Or does it just fit in with no problem?

"Is there any guides here on the forums as to getting everything switched around (including the Envy 17 specific Drivers and all that)?"
You bet there is, just gotta look, and read, your best bet is to follow as many links as well.

"do I have to buy a cage for the SSD? Or does it just fit in with no problem?"
If your notebook came with 2x HDD's then you will have 2.
If yours came with 1 HDD, most people will put the SSD in bay 1 with the carriage, and just tape/foam fill the HDD into bay 2, it's a TIGHT fit.
The HDD is fall/bump protected (HP 3D DriveGuard).
You can order a new carriage from HP, it will come with the SATA cable.

Read from the start of the this forum post, it will have all the links and on P.2 the issue with the carriage install, follow all the links.

soo my envy 3010eg arrives yesterday with 2 750gb hdds after few minutes the primary hdd samsung sata2 was replace with an ocz agility 3 sata 3 ssd. after 2 hours of writing recovery dvds i started a fabric recovery to new ssd. (by the way there is an nice option to recover an mini image this contains only windows with drivers and few important system tools) after next 2 hours the install was ready.

the system is now faster than hell and boots up with full load of apps like the adobe creative suite 5.5 3d apps office 2010 etc etc... faster than my desktop workstation win7 x64 etc... ssd ahci sata2 config... big thanks all for great support here - up to date intel rapid storage drivers are running. :D

but wwhat the hell can i do against this fannoise? how are the other envys do you have the same running fan 24/7 in the right corner? the BIOS fan feature is already disabled but it takes no effect?

    any sugestions?

    already have bios version F.05?

take a look at the temps while inside windows and idling. also take a look at the windows power options and whether the switchable graphics feature is enabled.

idle temps should be below 60°C (which makes fans run unnoticeably low) and when stressed around 80°C max.
    check the temps with hwmonitor
    and (gpu) fans with gpuz

@art_one: Look over here: HP Envy 17-3000 / 3010 Sammelthread
    I exchanged the 1st HDD.

Sorry for not looking into this thread. I posted about the sound problem in another thread. So I'm quoting myself:

I don't want to read through 67 pages...is there a solution about the sound drivers?

I also would like to get the proximity sensor to work on Win 7 Pro. I copied the driver from the SWSetup direcory, but that didn't help.

    Thanks in advance.

PS: My fans are audible, also. Right after pressing the power button. They never turn off.

Basically, no. :p I'm still looking for a definitive solution.

Is the software starting properly (where you can choose the sensor level, etc.) ? Are you sure it's not something behind you that is too close to the laptop? It happened to me: the wall behind my desk was too close so I thought the sensor didn't work, whereas in fact it did.

Thank you. I will get used to the not working equalizer then.

The red lights are off. I installed it via the install.bat file from the HPPRX folder. Setup was running, an entry in my start menu was made and I can uninstall it.
The software is working, is accepts to enable the sensor and saves the setting. But the sensor itself seems to be off.

Edit: Restarting Windows did the trick. The sensor is working again...stupid me ;)

Do a clean install of the OS and your SW Folder (don't forget to BU the folder 1st).
If you choose not to do the clean install, use uninstalles to get rid of the bloatware.

If you change your Anti Virus, use the uninstaller, then install your new AV, remnants will cause all sorts of odd and weird problems.

on previous envy 17b 3d series one could do a complete fresh OS install and just install the tridef software, which then would recognize the envy and automatically activate the software.

however, maybe something has changed from previous envy 17 3d series, which this instruction would indicate..

    my radeon card is done......

graphical glitches everywhere. random pixels on desktop flash colors. if i scroll a webpage pixels get stuck and when anything moves on screen, random shapes appear like now when the typing cursor flashes all the text gets glitched in sequence with the cursor.

driver uninstall and install did not fix anything and look like im gonna send in and im gonna invest in extra warranty because these laptops are terrible.

Problem does not happen on intel gpu.

I used to build custom desktop gaming rigs (for myself), and overclock the CPU and video card (back before they were called GPUs). That looks a lot like what I sometimes saw when I clocked the video card too high and it started overheating.

    newest bios version flashed?

if yes, tried amd reference drivers?

overclocked the gpu, or tweaked some hidden options of the gpu using 3rd party tools, or modified the vbios?

if nothing above applies, as mentioned above, check the temperatures, clocks & fans while this image corruption is occuring - gpuz in the sensors section

really looks like overheating (only temps above 100°C would cause this) or maybe some kind of humidity/dirt on the pcb.

btw the gpu is made by AMD - although covered by HP's warranty, since inside its product, its an AMD product that seems to be failing, not HP's.

    I don't think you can use DDR3 1600 in a 16gb configuration. I think you have to use DDR3 1333.

-installed new bios - same issue
-everything stock software and no overclocking/tweaking
-The graphical glitches are happening right now and the card is at 42 deg C..
-I am seriously hoping its not humidity or dirt but it definitely looks like it and if it is then there is something wrong with the laptop's design. It moved off the desk once in the month that Ive owned it.

    This is a gpuz screen:

yeah that really looks bad then..
calling the support is definitely the best you can do now.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...mizing-i7-battery-life-ideas.html#post5571515

first disabling the core parking override and then tweaking some of the other settings, like parking a specified amount of packages or setting the parked performance state to deepest reduces the fan noise very much when just a few cores/threads are needed, like while browsing.

also make sure your vents and heatsinks are clean, which requires you to open the notebook, or at least blow in the vents with compressed air regularily (once a month or two)

Is it even possible to put 16GB into the Envy 17 3xxx? HP's homepage says "8GB max.".
Even though I don't see a reason to have more than 8GB of RAM. It would be interesting in the future.

I got my Envy 2xxx back from HP Repair center, they have replaced Optical Drive. No scratches and stuff. Everything went well except one issue. My keyboard seems like it is not housed properly, it is raised on 2 places quite a bit. Is it something i can do to re-adjust it, so it can properly settled down on its slot.

you can try to open it and bend the corners back, if theyre bended upwards, which is quite likely, as taking the keyboard out of its compartment for the first time sometimes is really very difficult and often results in bended corners.

    Thanks for your suggestion necrophyte.
Are there any directions on how to take out keyboard.

If it is a small imperfection I could live with it, but the dang keyboard seem like is is on springs (on the raise places) kind of bothering.

Another thing I want to mention (it may help someone). I was installing fresh OS on a new Agility 3 SSD for my Envy. And when I come to installing TriDef it just would not install. So I send a support ticket to that company and they replied with a link for software the is specially for Envy 17 3D and install perfectly.

its quite easy on envy 17 1000 & 2000, just remove the battery, open the ram compartment and unscrew the screws with the keyboard symbol at the hole. then lift the keyboard using some very small and thin, but preferably not sharp tools from its compartment, carefully...

for the envy 17 3000 it seems to be a bit different, since its designed differently.

you can find instructions on page 55 here:
    http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c03178060/c03178060.pdf

regarding the tridef software: unfortunately this seems to have changed very much... on previous models you could just install the tridef software on a fresh OS installation from its official website and it would recognize the machine as an envy 17 3d, and activate the license automatically.

I have a problem with the display port.

When I connect my laptop to an external monitor with a VGA cable using the HP adaptator displayport to VGA.
The monitor is being detected but no picture shows up on the external monitor.

So what did I miss ?

Also about the size of SSD.

Does a 64gb is big enough to store the OS and few softwares and games ?

Yup. And, regardless of what HP's docs say, the 1600MHz should work perfectly fine. But the bios may only run it at 1333MHz (aka underclocked). 1600MHz is its rated 'standard' operating frequency, which simply means it should work normally at 1600MHz, not that it HAS to run at 1600MHz. Speaking again from my overclocking experiences, it's never a problem to run something at lower than its rated specs, only when pushing it beyond them do you see issues.

On the other hand, if the bios really won't automatically use 16GB 1600MHz ram at its rated clocks, its probably just a waste of money to buy it, when 1333MHz rated memory is cheaper. (BTW, according to Intel's website, I believe the 17-3000's motherboard chipset [HM65?] is rated to use it at 1600MHz too, so if there really is a limitation, it's something specific to HP's implementation).

Sorry, just to correct myself, it's not even the chipset that determines the memory compatibility- it's the processor. The i7-2670QM (base for the Envy 17-3000's) only lists support for DDR3-1066 / 1333. The i7-2760QM and above list DDR3-1066 / 1333 / 1600 as supported. This is per Intel's website.

Again, that doesn't mean you can't put memory rated for use at higher clocks in there, just don't be surprised when the memory only runs at the max rated spec for your processor.

Did a clean install and everything is fixed with the image corruption. For now.

I do not know the cause of the problem but oh well.

Have you redone the pads/paste on the GPU?.
If so, how did you remove the battery without voiding your warranty.
I saw a post, not sure if it was here at NBF, how to remove the rivets/plugs, without damage, that hold the battery in.
If the post is here, and you know where it is, can you post the link.

I have no idea. I opened the bottom case to see if there is damage but it was very clean and nothing looked wrong so I just reinstalled windows and now the card is working.

In other news though, my audio is now gone. Watch when I fix audio, something else will be broken. fun time.

edit: so how do I get audio working on a new install. I am sure its a software issue so if anyone got a way to fix, ill appreciate it. Neither speakers nor headphone jack is giving sound.

edit2: fixed sound. the drivers for audio in swsetup did NOT work but the drivers from HP's driver web page WORKED. Install the ones from HP's website after opening device manager and uninstalling the IDT driver.

edit3: lolollolololol cracking in left speaker now. Evidence that this is pure software problem with people having this issue. " Watch when I fix audio, something else will be broken." Lol time to fix more things.

edit4: Im not gonna even try to fix this now because I dont use the speakers much but if anyone knows how to fix >>>>> shoot me a reply.

I really like the Envy 17 but the fan noise is beginning to bother me. It was really quiet when I got the machine but now seems to run too hot and I don't do anything that requires the CPU to work.

The CPU seems to idle around 60c. I have the 2760 CPU.
