    Well...mine was free, too. It was a present...woohoo :D

Is it possible to check whether the i7 runs at turbo mode or not? Can I manually set that? Or deactivate the turbo mode at all?

    you cannot set it manually.
you theoretically can deactivate it, however it would involve making some pretty advanced tweaks, and your performance would definitely suffer heavily.
but why would you wanna do that at all???

@necrophyte: Thank you. Then I will just leave it as it is.
I wanted to make the fans stand still...or at least be more quiet. One of the two fans can be made (more) quiet by using the Intel GPU, but the other one is rotating all the time.

Yes,,,FREE,,,HP gave me this, so I guess its a PRESENT as well.
My HDX 18, one of the last ones built, gave me problems from 4 months on after I received it, my HDX 18 was 1 year out of warranty.
My HDX took 2 trips to Houston TX and 4 trips across Canada for repair/servicing.
It was quite a hasstle owning the HDX, it was out of my possession 1/4 of the time I owned it.
I ended up installing the OS 3x from scratch, the technicians in the USA sent it back with more problems and repaird, the technicans in Canada were spot on with their work.
This is HP way of saying "SORRY" for the problems, maybe I was just unlucky with the USA service tecks?, and the notebook in general.

This is an example of the great HP service I have received, (the new notebook).
I've got some grumbling, but REALLY, can I complain????
    +1 for HP Customer Care.

then rather take a look at the settings i already posted several times before regarding core parking and other cpu power management settings, as these are capable of minimizing cpu cycles and unnecessary processor activity, when not needed, which then reduces heat and consequently fan usage.

Thanks again, I've already read about the settings. But as Deihmos, I am not a fan of manually editing my registry. Of course, I can write a short .reg file, but I'm a bit sceptical and waiting for a "tool" to do this work for me :D
So I hoped to have a change changing the turbo mode.
I think we just have to wait for some handy tools like RMClock etc.

these registry modifications simply make some hidden settings inside windows power management options visible, theyre not effective settings by themselves. the effective settings regarding cpu parking etc. are then those you set in the windows power management options through gui, not regystry entries.

Hi guys I've almost finished the reinstallation of my laptop with an SSD but I got a few problems I couldn't solve.

The grapic card is reconize as a 6700M series and not the 7690M XT and proper driver for that one...
The Hp version is not reconize by Windows 7.

Then the proximity detector (no red light), bluetooth are not working, the brightness is at the maximum and I can't reduce it so what drivers do I need for these.

And sorry for my poor English.

    Thanks !

I hope you saved the swsetup folder!
proximity detector (no red light) : proximity sensor software in swsetup folder
bluetooth: first install intel wifi then hp wireless manager then bluetooth driver in swsetup folder..
    brightness = video driver

    - The graphics driver from HPs website worked for me (Win 7 Prof). The graphics card is just a faster clocked 6700, so you probably got the wrong drivers which do not recognize the card.
    - Bluetooth: As for my Envy 17-3000eg the BT drivers from HP are wrong. It's not an Intel adapter. It's from Broadcom. Just download the drivers from the official broadcom homepage. They work just fine.

    Hey guys quick question.

What are the performance of the new Radeon HD 7690M compared with the Radeon HD 6850M found in the second generation Envy 17 2XXX models?
    Slower, faster, about the same?

So, I put in my SSD (Intel 520), copied over, fixed the ssd alignment, and now... My sound when I'm doing things on the laptop makes like a "blip" noise... I'm not 100% sure if it does it while on speakers, but I'm using a nice pair of Sennheisers (HD 515's) and it is a noticeable blip that isn't there when I go back... Any suggestions? Was this problem ever fixed?

Edit: just tried it through my speakers... And the "Blip" is there as well.. It only happens when I do something like plug in an external HDD (even when plugged into the other side of the laptop), refresh a web page (where I first noticed it) and that kind of thing..

Edit2: Restarted my computer and it works fine now... Nevermind...

    lol?!

if it fails while the notebooks still under warranty, youll get a free replacement by hp, if you contact support on this issue and send it in, and if its outside of the warranty, you still can have it replaced by hp, which they will charge. no warranty voiding at all, unless you remove it and put in one hp doesnt support while the notebooks still under warranty.

Double check your warranty. I believe that even though the warranty on the machine is two years (CTO) or more...if you purchased additional warranty...batteries are only warrantied for ONE year.

Spoke too soon... So, my computer continued to do the sound blip whenever I refresh a page and sometimes at random intervals.. It wasn't doingthis at all until I installed my SSD the other day... I'm doing a latency test (well, watching it onthe checker) and I'm seeing a spike every minute or so.. Here's the screenshot of a normal spike... Screenshot by Lightshot Should mention, it spiked up to 2k atone point, but you can see that at the bottom.. Any ideas?

Do the blips match up with the spikes?
Spikes that low should not cause an audio glitch.

I was actually getting this when I first got my Envy 17... But, after doing all the updates, it magically disappeared.. Sure, the keyboard is a little sluggish in comparison to some other laptops, but I don't type TOO Fast for it to be an issue..

Edit: So, my keyboard works perfectly when it's plugged in... Not sluggish at all (and not a single problem with keystrokes).... Once I unplug it, it's a little wonky... This is still a widely known problem isn't it?

Also, the audio blips are seeming to not line up with the latency checker... And.. I heard somewhere online that Intel Rapid storage or whatever has caused this for other people... Do you guys know anything about that? And do I need that program if I have a SSD installed in my laptop (Intel 520 series)

    Hi everyone!

This is my first time here as I've only recently purchased my HP ENVY 17.
I bought it on eBay from a highly rated seller, as 17 inch versions are impossible to find in Australia.

I will not beat around the bush, I am desperate as I think that instead of having a 80gb mSATA SSD + 750gb HDD, I got the version without the SSD.
The seller insists that the SSD is invisible as it is reserved for System and Recovery.

This is what my partition tool shows me:

Now I am not too tech-savvy, but to me it seems that all the partition sizes add up to 698gb which is the 750gb hdd.

So, have I been ripped off?

Again, apologies for my first post being so lame.
Thanks in advance for helping me with this.

From the look of things, the mSATA ssd isn't there... Open it up and look for the mSATA port to make sure though... I didn't get that version, I just went and purchased a SSD aftermarket and stuck it in, so I'm not sure how it will show up..

I have the 160 GB SSD along with the 750 GB HD on a 17 inch Envy 3D installed at the factory in China. The SSD is FAST compared to a traditional HD if you're not used to it. It shows up as a regular HD. I've never heard of that...

I am not trained "didactically" in computers, but the head of the University of Pittsburgh security made me teach two 3 hour lectures as a sophomore more than 15 years ago (when I was only a pharmacy major and just casually "discussing" what I thought computers were capable of). I also made a Carneige Mellon University grad student look like a idiot at Silo when I brought back my 286 PC which was not working well when I was about 10 years old (yes before Best Buy and Circuit City put them out of business). So I have self-taught "non-conventional" PC knowledge... And you should be able to view any drives if you are accessing the administrator functions on any Windows-based PC.

I would put his shrimp on the barbie and get some money back! Good luck!

Hey guys thanks for the prompt reply! So it turns out I'm not crazy and the SSD really isn't there.

Actually I think I was able to find the source of the whole mixup. If you go to HP ENVY 17-3070NR page, and then to system specs, you will get taken to this:

HP Pavilion 17-3070NR Entertainment Notebook PC Product Specifications - HP technical support (Andorra - English)

Which is a HP PAVILLON 17-3070NR spec page!!

So the seller erroneously pasted the specs from there, as HP ENVY 3070NR does not have an SSD at all.
Quite a mess on HP's behalf and incompetence on seller's behalf.

They've offered me a replacement for a 180gb SSD +750 HDD (no mSATA but proper SSD) model. I'll have to pay the price difference but I'd rather have an SSD than some of my money back.

Thanks again for all the help! I will keep you posted on how it all plays out.

On another note, and sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, is there now a working solution for the black screen + blinking caps lock problem? I've had this happen couple of times when the laptop comes out of sleep, even during this brief testing period. I turned the laptop on maybe 3 or 4 times total, and had this happen to me twice. Hard to believe this is a common problem as the laptop otherwise seems to be of very good build quality (tho the keyboard could be a bit more solid I guess)

And now it's time for me to read the whole thread now to avoid asking silly stuff in the future :D

    Hey Guys,

I'm considering buying the envy 17 3d edition and I just read in an online manual that you only able to view 3d videos at the laptops screen. This would be a pity because I was counting on using it with a pc 3d ready projector like this one: http://www.optomaeurope.com/projectordetails.aspx?PTypedb=Business&PC=ML300. You connect it via VGA. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Thanks

evilh: You can play 3D content to a 3D TV or Projector from any PC - if you are not wanting 3D on the laptop screen intself you can save some cash and get the non-3D version.

I do not know what kind of 3D tech that projector uses - make sure you get any glasses that are needed.

Be advised the Envy 17 only has display port(s) and HDMI video outs. You would need to find a(n) DisplayPort to VGA or HDMI to VGA adapter that works (there was a thread discussing these awhile back - search for "Envy 15 3000 VGA")

Ich set everything to "low usage", but it didn't affect the fans in any way. Even if sometimes 7 of the 8 cores were parked.
The left fan (I think there are two of them?!) is able to stand still if i change to the Intel GPU. But the right one (underneath the numpad) is active all the time.

3d on a projector or tv only works over hdmi 1.4, so you need a device with hdmi, not vga.

what setting is "low usage"? there is no such specific setting.
if the cpu fan is constantly running, you probably need to change that inside the bios settings, there is an option to turn of fans when not needed. however, since the cpu is constantly active because of some OS services and some apps, even when idling, it will constantly produce heat, which will make the fan cooling the cpu run all the time. you can only make it run at lower speeds (so it doesnt run that loudly) by setting the power management settings accordingly (eg. allow parking 3/4 cores or even 7/8 threads when not needed, setting the parked performance state to deepest etc.)

With "low settings" I mean parking of most cores etc. from these settings :) I was just too lazy to write down everything.

BIOS settings are correct. My old Tashiba Satellite x200 was quiet when idling and often while doing simple jobs like surfing etc.. And with quiet I mean you didn't hear anything. I would think that a better cooling management would have helped. Or even bigger fans with a lower frequency :|

Does anyone get his Envy 17-3000 quiet?

I'm able to play Mass Effect 3 at 1080p, 60fps with fine detail and everything on this - but the thing is, the back vents (heat sinks) get really really hot after playing for about an hour.

Nothing goes wrong, and there's no overheating, but the back of the base (right by the screen) gets un-touch-ably hot after an hour. The heat however isn't anywhere near the keys, and there's none at all on the palm rests - I just thought it was a good thing to mention.

    Loving my machine though

Get a refund, don't even let the dealer talk you into some other B.S.
If he doesn't know what he's selling, don't deal with him.
    Get your money and run.

Sorry, for the record, I heard somewhere (don't remember where), that the mSATA SSD that came installed was treated not as an actual drive, but more of just being used as swap memory or something along the lines, so I wasn't sure how it would show up..

Possibly you read that the 4-8-16-32 GB SLS ( Single Level Cell v/s multi level cell) mSATA are the ones being used as a drive ram, similar to the Seagate 7200 RPM hibred HDD drives.
It is possible to do this config on the Envy with a HDD in bay 1.
The benefit of this comfig, larger storage and SSD performance for much less.
The drawback, mechanical failure of the HDD.
BUT,,,YIKES,,,,the prices of the SLS mSATA, or even the 2.5" SSD SLS SATA,,,,Santa aint gonna bring me that for Christmases.

BTW, the SLS mSATA/SATA SSD's are much faster SATA II, more along the lines of RAM, and far exceed the build and tolerances of SSD chips.

    Hi,

Is there an option to disable the automatic switch between the Intel and Ati graphic cards when I use the laptop with the charger ?

Also I noticed when I'm watching some videos the brightness is changing automaticaly so it cause a sort of blinking and it's really annoying.

Any ideas where it come from ?

    Thanks !

When it starts up (or any other time) right click on your desktop background, and go to the Switchable Graphics Settings. There should be an option to turn auto switching on/off
