I used almost exactly the same settings and I confirm that sound is great (for a laptop).

I had another question: My graphics are trying to switch when I'm on battery.
I say "trying" because I get a message saying : You have to close all applications before beeing able to switch.

Anyone knows if there is a way to force the switch ?

I'm glad I'm joining the crowd here. Hope you guys don't mind another newbie.

Just got my Envy 3D. Only option I added was HP's recovery disk -- what a mistake. Replaced out the default HD with SanDisk Extreme SSD, ran recovery, and it promptly failed. Tried it again, same thing -- sysprep barfs. I'm not sure if they do any QC on these things. Really annoying. So I created the recovery disk myself using the HP's Recovery Manager and that worked fine.

I don't have problems with the touchpad or the responsiveness of the keyboard. Fan noise is a bit loud, but whatever. Coretemp is showing all cores right around 45-49 degrees C (is that the standard people see?) I'm used to laptops running considerably cooler than that.

Backlight on one of my key is dead already (the left bracket key [ ). So I had to call HP and force them to send me another one (they charge the card but refund once they receive my old laptop) so I don't lose any computer time. Only change seems to be that newer HP Envy 3D says they come with 8 cell battery and not 6. Does anybody know if that increases the size of the notebook (that would suck)?

I disagree. I have a second gen Envy and I see no reason to upgrade. The graphics card is weaker, the CPU is the same, and all you're really paying for are the little frills like volume nob and slightly better speakers.

Not only that, you're really missing out if you don't get a blu-ray drive in the envy. I watch bluray movies on mine all the time and the experience is exceptional. I say if you absolutely need a laptop right now go with the second gen and wait for the Ivy bridge envy to really give you a reason to splurge.

I'd say buy whichever laptop makes you happy if you have the money. Don't ever overthink a tech purchase - something better is always 3 months away.

You disagree with what exactly? The person said the GPU is weaker but not significantly. You're just saying don't upgrade from Envy 2nd gen to 3rd gen.

Hi I've got another question about the new envy 17, does it have those wierd arrow keys like the pavillions do? I really don't know why hp would mess with something like arrow keys that have worked fine in their original setup for years! Thanks!

If you mean that both keys are merged into just one normal sized keyhole, then the answer is "yes". If you mean anything else with "weird", then the answer is "dunno".

The last-generation Envy was a bit easier to keep clean, I must say. Smudges will show on this lighter aluminum.

Hate to bring the bad news but the TriDef Update (5.X) will not work with the HP preinstalled version. Yes, it will appear to update but check the About box in the Ignition App when you launch it. It will remain the old version.

HP did this with Cyberlink Products as well which are not just a version behind but many versions.

The new version of TriDef has way more features than simply Ignition.

A bit upset that my "high end" laptop came with such antiquated versions.

    TriDef 3D Installled = 1.06 Latest Retail = 5.01 Upgrade Price = $49.95

    Cyberlink DVD Installed = 10.0x Latest Retail = 12.x Upgrade Price = $39.95

Such a classy move on the part of HP. I guess its time to go hunting for the elusive promo codes so I can upgrade to the latest versions.

Word of advice, if you plan on taking advantage of the 2 year Norton Internet Security then activate the license on your laptop and add it to your Norton Account. Otherwise; if you do clean install BEFORE activating, you won't be able to get it.

After clean install, just look up your license code on Norton's website (they make it a bit of a challenge) and apply it when prompted.

HP does not include full version of Tridef with Envy. They just include Tridef Ignition. And latest version of that is "HP (1.0.6)" -- and that 1.0.6 is HP version only (it doesn't mean it's 5 version back from the current retail version of 5.1) I had a long discussion with their customer service so I got caught up quickly. So if you still need the full TriDef (with 3d media player and such -- which is pretty good btw), you can get the discounted price by going here: TriDef 3D :: TriDef Software :: TriDef 3D for AMD HD3D It's special AMD HD3D version of Tridef for half the price.

speaking of keyboard ........... normally I use my BT keyboard and mouse but when I went home for spring break I used the laptop's keyboard and touchpad. trolololol @ the experience. I was not aware it was that bad. I had to retype so many sentences and touchpad had so many misclicks (my fault on the misclicks, I turned off the palm sense so I can play a game with keyboard+touchpad). BUT we do need a fix for keyboard.

Dont second guess before you get it. There are some issues (Keyboard, Sound) that effect some units. Use it for awhile before you pass judgement - and keep it mind you have 3 weeks to return it (if you are in the US).

I returned mine due to the keyboard thing, but i plan on reordering as soon as a fix is released. Its a great laptop - one of the best pieces of technology i've owned.

I haven't had any of the problems some others are having. So for I'm very pleased with it's performance. I've had my 17 3d for about a month now and no problems. I did need to re-install the Cyberlink DVD blu-ray software the day I received it because of a botched update which got interrupted during the process, but that's about it.
Now that I think about it I do recall experiencing the keyboard issue the other night while typing some emails. I've been using a wireless mouse and keyboard off and on, so it really doesn't bother me all that much, but I did notice having to go back and retype a few times while composing an email.

Anyone know when Envy 17-4xxx with Ivy bridge would come? The Hp Pavillon 17.3 inch screen would come next month with Ivy Bridge. And with NVidea GPU (with Optimus?).

    Hey all,
I just got off the HP with support, but I wanna know if anyone else has had this happen. My touchpad has stopped working(partially). I can still move my cursor and I have all my multi-touch functionality. What I don't have is my "click" functionality; both the left & right buttons depress but nothing happens, and I can't 2-finger click for a right click or 3-finger for a wheel click.
They're sending a box to me, but has this happened to anyone else?

Hi all, Anybody here who succeeding in buying an HP Envy17 with Radiance HD screen in Europe (or more specifically in Britain/Ireland?)???

HP in Britain doesn't have the option of Radiance screen anywhere on their site, only Brightview screen. HP In Holland however do have the option, but it costs 1750 euros!! The American models all come with it standard and cost just $1300. Something seems a little unfair here.

Can anyone give an objective comparison between the Radiance screen and Brightview screen..? Are they different technologies? Is the Radiance screen worth waiting an extra month to get the laptop shipped from the U.S?..
(I do a lot of graphics work, so a quality screen is important).

Thanks for any info, it will be really really appreciated! :)

pop in a windows installation disc and see if buttons work. If not.. hardware issue. Hopefully cable issue and nothing serious.

I bought the 3002ea from HP UK. Its true compared to the US, we are very limited in configurations when it comes to HP, yet still pay the same hefty price. I was toying with the idea of getting one from eBay direct from the US, but you would need to agree with the seller to mark down the value or you will be stung with 20% VAT when it comes here. I just thought it wasn't worth the hassle.

Regarding the screen, I think it is very good. The viewing angles have pleasently surprised me and the screen is very bright. I actually prefer it is not Full HD resolution, as even on a 17 inch screen things can look very small at Full HD resolution (not good if your eyesight is not the best like mine).

The UK version comes with two 750GB hard drives, sold one of them and for the same price bought a Crucial M4 128, best upgrade you can do to this or any other PC.

Hi Giorgixxo, Thanks for the info. I assume the 3002ea model you got was with the standard brightview screen. Its good that you have decent viewing angles and a bright screen. I also don't mind if its only 1600x900, but my biggest complaint is about the colour depth and Adobe gamut. I don't really like 65k colour displays and if it only has a 65% adobe gamut then that's not good. I want it for editing photos.
Yeah, you're right, seems that ordering from the U.S is definitely not a variant if I have to pay an extra 20% tax! However I found a shop in France selling the Radiance screen model for 1500 euros so I might order from them.

I haven't seen any other screen as beautiful as the Radiance display on the HP Envy 17.. I have a lot of friends that style the other HP model screens, and they're nowhere near as clear, bright, or colored as the one on mine... I tried using my netbook again (I have an Acer Chromebook).. Which has a much better keyboard, but the screen hurt to use... It was awful.. I would recommend splurging and getting the Better screen, it has been worth every bit and really set apart this laptop from other 17'' ones I've seen.

Got my Envy today, and so far it is a dream machine!! I cannot believe I have loaded so much of my stuff on here already. Everything is fast, typing is crisp, the track pad is performing wonderfully. The case is in good shape. I am happy after 10 hours.

I know the Envy 17 has an additional mini-PCIe slot for the mSATA drive. But is that slot only for mSATA drives or is it an all-purpose mini-PCIe slot?

I wanted to add in internal USB slot by using this: PM3U ( MiniCard to USB2.0 Adapter) Then I can leave my Logitech Unifying receiver in the notebook all the time without it sticking out anywhere. Has anyone tried this yet?

I know I can use bluetooth too, but even now, selection of bluetooth wireless keyboards and mice/trackballs are very limited.

(on a side note...what the heck. it's only been a week since I've owned my Envy 3D and already backlight on one of my keyboard keys went out, now the mute button works but the light indicator is completely out too -- good thing the replacement laptop is already on its way)

Honestly, the Firmware fixed everything.. That "123" problem isn't that bad as people are making it out to be.. Unless you're constantly spamming all three of those keys at once (while you're at it, start punching your laptop), you won't ever come across it.. The keyboard is magnificent now, not even joking.

if you press 1 2 3 in sequence very fast or press 1 2 and 3 all together it registered an "Enter" between the 2 and the 3.

only applies to the number keys under the f1-f12 - num pad works fine.

How do they counter fraud with a/d coverage? what if you wait 3.75 years and "drop" it to get a new laptop?

not that id ever consider doing that - im just curious.

I actually never had problems with the keyboard at all. I think lot of people complained about the keyboard dropping text, but I've never ran across that problem and I type pretty fast -- although the general mushy-ness of the keyboard slows me down a bit (it's not exactly the best keyboard out there...).

And I only see that weird bug on keys 1 2 and 3. I can't replicate it on other numbers.

It was good for a pretty good laugh around the office...

Hi everyone, I recently bought a HP Envy 17 (3002ea model) and thought I'd sign up to discuss some things. First of all, I'm really happy with the laptop overall, it looks great, performs well and is reasonably priced (even in the UK).

Unfortunately, like some of you, my model also has the dented case just below the left-hand USB port, and I noticed some of you managed to fix the problem. I was hoping someone would be able to post some reasonable advice on how to do this?

In addition, it'd be great if I could get some advice on looking after my laptop. I understand it's a bit of a beginner-level question, but most members here seem to know their stuff and with a premium laptop I'd rather not take chances trying to adapt generic articles on the internet for my laptop. I back up my files regularly, use an anti-virus along with scanning and disk defragmenter regularly. However, in terms of software I was wondering if there's anything else I could do to ensure my laptop is running as efficiently and smoothly as possible? Is there also anything recommended in looking after the screen, case and vents? There is quite a few brands of screen cleaners and wipes, and I'm having trouble discerning between the overpriced ones and those that may do more harm than good. My laptop stays in the sleeve it came with when it's not in use, but I understand dust will eventually clog up the vents. Having done some research, it looks like I'll have to open the laptop up use compressed air to clean the vents, does anyone know where I could find a guide on how to do so?

Thanks to anyone who answers any of the questions.

Ok, that BIOS update was bulls.... I've go the phantom linebreaks, too.
If I hold down "1" and "2" and additionally press "3", then it's a carriage return.
If I hold down (on a German keyboard) "-", "," and "v" and additionally press "x", it is like "Page Down".
And there are definitively more than these combinations since I more often got a phantom carriage return when typing normal sentences quickly.

Can I return to F.05? I didn't have problems at all with that version.

Hey everyone I can officially join this forum now. I just received my HP Envy 17 laptop from HP and I love it. First thing I did when I opened it up was check for any design flaws. I'm glad to say there was none. I installed my new Crucial m4 SSD and it's blazing fast around a 10 second boot time. The screen is absolutely amazing. This is the most I've ever spend on myself and I'm proud of my purchase. The Laptop looks and feels amazing. I love the Backlit Keyboard and the Beats audio button. I'm so excited I just bought 3 games for my new laptop Skyrim, Assassin's Creed Revelations, and Battlefield 3. I'm not a huge gamer but I thought I'd give it a try. I have a couple questions if anyone can help me out please. 1, How do install the new amd CCC 12.2 so that I can have the best experience. 2, I want to put on a screen protector on my screen because I don't want my screen to have any scratches. Were would I order it from Viewguard or Photodon. And should I just get a custom cut one since there isn't a bezel anymore.

it seems the battery in the Envy 17 has been stated to be 6 cell and 8 cell by HP on their web site. When I purchased a few weeks ago, it was 6 cell, now it says 8 on the web site. Does anyone know which it is?
