I have had my Envy 17 3D since Friday. Everything working well so far. The only issue I have... HP has a new discount code that would have saved me even more!! DARN! Coupon code NBG3253 saves 33% on envy 15 and 17 and 173D. I saved 15% plus 250 using NBCT8532 which is not good any longer. I would have saved another $350 if this was active a few weeks back because I ordered it pretty loaded. I thought about returning for the money, but mine is working well and was shipped in great shape. There was a gaping hole in the outside box, but nothing wrong inside the inner box.
How long did it take for the keyboard issue to come up?
What does anyone know about the battery?
-
WIsh i had seen eveything on this forum before i bought! I want to do a "restart" and when windows tries to restart, it hangs witht he message on the bottom left, to Press esc ... I can do a power down and then power up fine, it is the restart that hangs. hmmm.
-
Called customer support, fixed in a jiffy. Great experience with concierge service! I should have reset to original settings myself!
Watched a 3D movie too...love this thing!!! -
call HP sales and show new coupon on same configuration envy 17. hp will refund. if they go in loops, say you want to go ahead and process a return and a new order with the new coupon right then. they will refund then if they didnt before.
-
Thanks for advice...they reimbursed difference I paid before (370 from previous total and coupon). I am very happy.

Wow. Just got my replacement Envy 3D-3000 because the first one had keyboard backlight problem (some of the keys won't light up).
This one...battery doesn't charge. Received it out of the box. BIOS don't see the battery. HP Assistant doesn't either. Neither does Windows. I'm on the phone with HP again....
I've gone through 2 Envy 3Ds in two weeks. This isn't the standard failure rate is it??? -
Sounds like a QC problem. I received mine last Friday. The box had a big hole on both sides, but the inside box was fine, and everything seems to be okay. I had a few glitches, called concierge service, and it was taken care of quickly.
I had to reload powerdvd10 because it originally froze, but reloading fixed everything. 3D is great.
WHat do you mean "out of the box". Was it your previous unit back, or did they ship a refurbished? -
congrats and nice machine. if I were you I would spend that 370 on a 4 year accidental warranty from hp. i think its less than 370
-
I got the 3 year plan already when I purchased. I could trade it in for the 4. The service so far has been very good. 4 days is not saying much.
-
Hey guys, just received the Envy 17 I ordered for my father. It looks great, build quality looks pretty good, there's a small nick in the aluminum under the cd drive but it's barely noticeable.
I'm writing because the audio has some serious issues. There's MAJOR buzzing coming from the Bluray drive area of the chassis when playing at any kind of volume. The sound itself sounds really, really solid for a laptop but the resonance is killing it. Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks!
Nathan -
Check the settings of equilizer. Mine buzzed when I turned bass all the way up. Adjust to see if it makes a difference.
-
1st Envy: Took it out of the box and turn it on -- keyboard had backlight problem where some of the keys won't light up. So I had the option of returning it and waiting for a repair that would take up to three weeks (on a new laptop???) or simply returning it and ordering a new one. So I ordered a new one.
2nd Envy: Took it out of the box, plugged it in, and let is boot and start. I setup. Windows does not see the battery. I run the battery test (on both HP assistant and BIOS Battery test) and neither sees the battery. I reset the battery cable. Nothing. Spent 30 minutes with tech support, they give me the same option: return it for a repair (up to three weeks) or return it and order a new one.
Both boxes arrived in perfect condition...not damaged or mishandled.
I go through their Customer Service department politely asking what's going on here. I ask that if I were to order another Envy 3D, either they give me longer than the standard 21 days return policy or give me on-site warranty for free. They say no....????
I've only had Lenovo's. Other than some of the older HP tablets. I've never had to deal with a customer support that's so inept. To make the long story short, I'm in the process of returning both of the Envy 3Ds now. I doubt I'll ever purchase HP again...neither is my company or any of my co-workers. To make the matters worse, I'm having to deal with bunch of co-workers shaking their heads saying, "I told you man...why didn't you just buy a MacBook Pro? After TWO DOA laptops, Apple would've made it right." UGH! So I figured I should just wait this out and wait for the latest ThinkPad W series...or the new wave of Ivy Bridge laptops coming out -- but definitely not HP. I'll probably write an email to their executive staff and just let them know how the process went so maybe they'll improve it for others, but I'm done.

Hi all, just introducing myself. I've been looking for a laptop for a few weeks and reading reviews for them brought me to this site And the Envy threads. Your knowledge, community spirit, and the excellent rep of the Envy 17 persuaded me to take the plunge and I put my cash down for a HP Envy 17-3002ea yesterday. I hope my family understands that I will *not* be leaving the house until I've receive said silver treat, and will be considerably distracted for weeks to come with my shiny new machine.
Anyway, proud to join you. -
Hi,
Does anyone know if it's necessary to restore all the components as their origin before making an exchange of the laptop with the HP support because I changed the RAM and I can't find the one that was deliver with the laptop.
I know it sounds stupid but just in case
Thanks -
This is what I just ordered a few hours ago, I did not know this was not an IPS display , its the 3D version of this better?

Only difference with 3D display:
120hz
brighter. -
thank you melagious , would you recommend the upgrade its $80 more
-
I can hardly believe that the 3D screen can even be brighter than the normal one. It's almost too bright on max. setting
Do you have a comparsion? -
more than anything I care about the 120hz, the hp support its ridiculous they only read scripts and don't give you a straight answer. If you go to their site and compare both it shows the 3d version to be full hd 1080p while the non 3d says N/A, but all other specs are the exact same other than the 3d capability.and under usage it says the 3d to be for business and the non 3d to be for home use, ????
-
Going to be sending ours in to have the resonance fixed. Will keep you guys updated on the service experience. If they can't fix it will likely convince my dad to return it and go with a less sexy but problem free laptop...
Nathan -
Any opinion about that ?
-
Both screens are 1080p, The 3D screen runs at 120hz and is brighter (Brighter because 3d content is usually darker).
Id put everything back the way it was before you return it.
They will use any excuse to screw you over. -
Does anybody know which version of HP Coolsence has the 3 modes like quietest mode. I have the 2.1 version and only have the on/off options. And will that work on the hp envy 17 2012 model. Just to lower the fans there getting pretty loud. I'm just doing web surfing and watching videos.
-
Ended up asking for a replacement, they're allowing us to keep the current computer until the second one arrives.
If the second one exhibits the same issue I will likely return both of them.
The service people were very easy to deal with and easy to understand. So far smoother than my Asus RMA experience.
Nathan -
can you guys refer me to a thread that talks about the advantages of the 3d version ? I'm very new at all this and I don't really care about the 3d but I have heard that the 120Hz makes a big difference as far as the smooth motion and fast action scenes in movies and sports, does the 3d version have worse battery life? does the 120hz only activates when in 3d mode? some hp reps have told me yes only on 3d and others said its always on, this guys are a joke but I do like the envy and that they're easy on returns and exchanges, I had found a thread where people compared the versions but I cant find it anymore I tried Google and the forum search =( . thanks in advance
-
I have had the envy 17 3D for a week today, and going strong. This is my 3rd HP is a row. I had a bad experience with Dell, won't go there again. I had a bad experience with apple and a mac pro, won't go there again. (My IPOD classics crash routinely! Wish they made a touch with the same 160GB!) Toshiba's were okay, nothing bad happening. So far i have had good experiences when I talk with the tech support at HP for the envy. HP even reimbursed me more when the 33% sale went into affect right when my computer arrived. I know others have had issues, but so far my experiences have been good.
-
I'm still interested in a comparison though
-
I'm not an Envy owner anymore (and sending a complain email through their "email the CEO" feature on their website didn't do any good).
But I figured I should follow up on one of the post that you guys might find useful.
I mentioned about turning one of the extra mini-PCI-e slot in the Envy and turning it into an internal USB. I don't have an Envy anymore so I can't test it on an Envy, but I did manage to set it up on my old Thinkpad t410s and it works wonderfully. (Good thing I didn't sell too soon!)
Here is the image:
I ordered the mini-PCI-e to USB part from Taiwan ( http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/PM3U.html). $15 each. They only ship via DHL so the shipping was steep! $18. I just ended up ordering a few so I can sell it on ebay for a bit more to recoup the cost of the card)
Even though mini-PCI-e slot can carry either or both SATA and USB signals, I still don't know if the spare mini-PCI-e slot on Envy does carry both -- it is for their microSATA card after all. I guess I won't know for sure anymore The part that I ordered also converts the native 3.3v of mini-PCI-e to USB's 5v as well.
I'm using it for my Logitech Unifying receiver so I don't have to plug anything into the notebook to use my trackman or the wireless keyboard. I personally find it pretty sweet.
Anyway, this is probably my last post into the Envy forum. I hope you guys enjoy your Envy and you guys have lot less problems than I do! -
When I purchased my Envy 17 I upgraded HP Support Assistant to version: 6.1.12.1 & this automatically installs Cool Sense version: 1.0.1.4 & now have 3 modes.
Just go to start & type: HP Support Assistant
When app opens click the ? upper right hand corner & check for new updates.
or download link: HP Support Assistant HP ENVY 17t-3000 CTO Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) -
So, through a chain of events, my Beats button doesn't work anymore... I don't know why, and if it doesn't work, I honestly could care less.. But, if it's an easy fix, I'm willing to do it... Any ideas? I flashed to the newest Bios (f.06) and have all my drivers updated (well, at least I think I do)
-
Have you updated the OSD (on screen display) drivers? Try a system restore?
-
Uhhh... I don't think I've updated those... Link?
Also, I don't want to do a system restore... Like I said, not the end of the world, but if there's an easy fix, I'll do it. -
Same thing happened to me Beats Button, & fn + esc key wouldn't bring up system information. Someone elese recomended to reinstall HP Quick Launch and it fixed the problem, not even HP Tech could help me, they said to do a system restore!
Anyways go to C:\SWSetup\HPQL and click setup.
I hope this also fixes your problem, good luck. -
I think this is a prior version, not an upgrade.
-
The price difference is not much, and the 3d is pretty cool. -
I guess it is an earlier version of CoolSense, but at least you have the choice of selecting 3 different modes instead of just on/off.
-
Woo! Fixed it perfectly! I remembered uninstalling that, thinking it was pointless
OOPS! But, works now! Thanks! +rep!
-
How does your new hp envy 17 work with the 3 mode. I mean the fan. is it much quieter or what mode do you have it on and does it work well...
-
I tried to install that version and no luck. Does anyone have the download link for Cool Sense version: 1.0.1.4
-
There is no download link that I know of for Cool Sense 1.0.1.4.
When you install HP Support Assistant 6.1.12.1 you automatically get Cool Sense 1.0.1.4.
Just go to start & type: HP Support Assistant in search bar.
When app opens click the ? upper right hand corner & check for new updates or download HP Support Assistant 6.1.12.1 here: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54501-55000/sp54620.exe
Afer the install open HP Support Assistant.
1. click Troubleshoot
2. click Power Thermal and Mechanical
3. click Thermal tab
4. click HP Cool Sense
Now you should have 3 modes.
I'm running at Performance Optimized Mode.
I never really tried any other settings. The only time the fans get a bit loud is when gaming, otherwise the fans don't really bother me. -
Thanks man I got it installed following your guide.
-
I have HP Envy 17 3070NR. When I first got it, I confirmed that Intel Widi worked and connected fine. Haven't checked it in awhile, but just tried to connect now and Intel Widi software is saying laptop is not a supported notebook. Anyone else get this? All I've done is update to the latest BIOS release.
*PROBLEM FIXED* -
I updated and still have 2.1 with 2 settings. I have a 3D model, but wonder why I keep 2.1.
I found this website explainmign 1.0 and 2.0. It looks like 2.1 got simplified, and is intended for certain models. My dv7t has version 1.0. -
Wow. I sent mine back. I figured that it worked, except a burnt out number 7 and a dented USB port. They fixed both and even replaced my touchpad (according to the work order). I used to work for Sony in the Summers and I really wanted to get the refurbs because we ran more tests on those electronics more than the new ones. So, since it was already "used" by me for two weeks, I figured I had the patience for a couple more. I used HP service before. They are good about sending a box and returning it. Never used the onsite option.
I like the look of Apple products, but this thing is a beast compared to the same money spent on a MacBook. I love the solid state drive option. It is blazing and the 3D option is a great thing to have for movies. I am going to project it on a Viewsonic soon. Hopefully I'll have good things to report on Summer Movie Fest with the kids.
-
Eh. It's just that...this is their top-of-the-line product. Burnt-out backlight? That's an easy QC problem. Battery not charging? Probably another easy QC problem. I used to love HP. Honestly...this is a company that Apple strived to be like 15-20 years ago. What happened to them???
I just don't want to buy a MacBook. I love Apple products. But numbers don't make sense to me in my head. MacBook Pros so over-priced for what it is...I just can't bring myself to do it. Other companies like Lenovo and Fujitsu (surprisingly) have incredible service too...better than what I'm used to with Apple anyway. So I can't justify it. Besides, my VMWare Hackintosh image runs circles around a MacBook Pro configuration anyway. (Side note: On the Envy 3D I had, it was getting benchmark scores pretty close to 2010 Unibody MacBook Pros...which isn't bad at all!)
I consider it a blessing in disguise anyway. I've given the HP a good try. It was just enough for me to realize I might even consider the Alienware M17x R3s now. I've seen ones with 3D screens and the GTX 580m (holy mother of a video card...wow...) refurbished on eBay for $1600-1700 or so. Even with the Envy 3D discount, I had to pay tax so it came out to $1450 or so anyway. I'll try that out. I've heard some terrible things about Dell/Alienware's service too though. So fingers crossed. -
Hi there!
I wanted to ask those who live in the USA. I've heard that if you order a laptop from HP via phone, a lady might give you an additional discount on top of online price and maybe even on top of a coupon. To what extent is that true? How much price of ENVY 17 can she drop for me?
Has anyone done that? -
I have heard that, but not sure it really happens? I had a coupon for 33% off, so that did not happen to me.
-
Nothing i do changes the Coolsense 2.1 on my computer with 2 settings. I have never heard any fan noise in the 10 days I have had my Envy 17 3D, so no reason to change, and my computer has never been overly warm, and I use it a lot. Not a gamer on the envy; that is what my Blackberry Playbook is for. My dvt7 has the 3 mode and version 1.0 on it, and that one can be a little noisy.
I wonder how the software determines which version if it detects the correct system and we are getting different versions downloaded. -
Hi all, please please could some kind expert give advice on which model envy to buy - either 2001er (2011er) model or this years 3001er model.
I'm in Europe and there's a big price difference between these models of hp envy 17. This years model is more than 325 dollars more expensive.
seems to me they both have the radiance screen and same fhd res. Gpu cards are pretty equal too.
Has anyone compared these models? Are there any differences in build quality or screen colour accuracy/brightness?
I've read that the 2001er model has wifi issues and some overheating problems.
Cpu is bit different, but that doesn't matter to me. (neither are 3d, but i figure it's not worth buying 3d for lot more money just to get extra 60hz refresh.
Can anyone comment if this years model is actually worth that extra money??
Thanks a lot for any advice!
-
I have a Fujuitsu for work. It is awesome. I have had it for 3 and half years and it is going strong. It is a tablet, so I carry it a lot, and the HD has been bugy a little. Apple is way too much. Since they are worth more than Poland, I can't justify giving them any more money other than iPods/Phones/Pads. I agree with the QC problem. Their factory in China needs a visit. My brother is now doing QC for his company. Of course they're sending him to Norway, Germany, and Switzerland. I just want to meet his new Swiss girlfriend when he gets one.
