Wow thanks for that input Dzier! When I called HP support for my problem, they had indicated it was something they had never unheard of, and that I would have to send it in for repair or 9get it replaced. Guess I'll go ahead with the case then.

Well.. Honestly, I know for a fact that I've done it before and it's put the random 6 in. When I first saw this problem arise with other people (in this thread)... I tired it myself and it happened... I'm trying it now (Ex. dsasdasdasdasdasdadsasadsdadsadsadsasdadsaddsadsasdadsa) and it's not doing it... Little odd..

Side note: Running the Envy 17 (3xxx NO 3D) with .07

Then we should hope that F.08 will fix that. It's working with F.05 though...
In the meanwhile I'm happy with F.05 which seems not to have any disadvantages.

Nothing has been stated except for the envy 4 and 6. I wonder if the wait is about Windows 8. The pavilions now can be ordered with back lit keyboards and the dv7 has 2 years totalcare warranty like the Envy line, so I wonder. The latest envy line was released December 2011, so perhaps later in the year. It seems a redesign would accompany the ivy bridge update if that happens.

Has anyone tried to remove the battery?
It's attached to a cable. Is there some kind of connector or how is the cable attached to the mainboard?

I know that, but that wasn't my question :D
How do I remove it anyways? Is there a connector at the "other end"?

Support told me it would just void the warranty of the battery. Got that in black and white. I just don't want to abuse the battery while using the laptop 95% of the time as a DTR.

Ah I hear ya, kinda did that with my G60 and I knew better at the time.... -_-

I know for a fact that the removal instructions are in the service manual, its updated for new Intel hardware but still applies as the laptop isn't undergoing physical changes.

Can someone answer me this. What side is the Intel CPU on and what side is the AMD GPU on. I never use the AMD card, so why is it the fan on the right side of the the laptop always on. It's very loud and getting annoying...

GPU fan: left side (keyboard). Turns off when not using the discrete graphics.
CPU fan: right side (num pad).

Some ppl here say that they do not hear the fan. I posted a temperature screenshot (few weeks ago), but noone with "no fan activity" replied to that.

Is anyone having issues with the screen flickering and then it goes dead? I think I'm up to date with my ENVY 173D on the bios side.

It does it randomly. It has gone black with MS Internet Explorer and MS Zune software. I wonder if it is the auto graphic switching. This is a 3 month old laptop and I would believe that HP is making total garbage if this is a hardware issue as I had to already send it back once for a burnt out key and a flaky touchpad. I still think the touchpad is wonky...

    Any similar experiences? Thanks!

Hearing the fan on either my 17 3D or 17 is rare. When it has been loud, it is for a few minutes only. What are you doing, or what had you been doing, when the fan gets loud? For me the few times are when I was doing a gazillion things at once and had way too many apps and open windows running concurrently. The computer itself is still very fast even when bogged down like that, so I have been very impressed that nothing I have done pushed the machine to a point where I can notice a slow down.

I just like browsing the web, watching tv shows online. I also do some Photoshop stuff. My temps are always around 45C or below. I also make sure nothing is blocking the air vents on the back. I just want to make sure that it's the normal sound you'll hear from the fan...

It definetly is the normal sound, I think...unfortunately. Even when idling the CPU fan runs at slowest rpm. At 45° and lower.

I have 2 HP envys, a 17 3D and a 17, and at times they are side by side, and the noise is generally extremely low 99% of the time.

The Envy 17 is no longer available on HP website (configure one, and when you go to put it in cart, it says not available). The 3D is still available. I guess they are running out of the older hardware and gearing up for the
32XX. I wonder what additional hardware they are waiting for if they already have the ivy brirdge processors, or if they are just trying to get rid of as much inventory as they can before putting it out there.

Just venting, because I'm now returning my second Envy 17 3070NR in as many weeks.

The first one suffered from switchable graphics that had a mind of its own. I managed to get it sorted out, but I screwed up a lot of stuff in the process. So, off it went.

The second one had a jammed "Beats Audio" button right out of the box. I possibly could have overlooked that since I still had access to its functionality, which I disabled anyway. I just couldn't get the idea out of my head that a $1,500 laptop should operate flawlessly, especially when brand-new.

However, that problem was rendered moot when the laptop evidently decided that being operative isn't all it's cracked up to be. Only once did pressing the power button do anything more than elicit an amber wink from the wireless button on the keyboard.

Because a member of my household is a project manager at HP and has relayed many stories of their idiosyncratic corporate incompetence, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'm just frustrated.

So I've looked,,,,,did the research,,,,,,,,cant find the answer,,,,,,,maybe someone here will have the quick answer.

The ENVY 17-3200~3299 will have the i7 and only have USB 3.0 (4X).
It will have the HM76 chipset.
So does this setup removes the possibility of booting UBUNTU via USB as 3.0 does not support a USB boot drive, you need a USB 2.0.
    OR.....
Does the Intel HM76 chipset allow you to use a USB boot drive?

I am now sending it back to HP... for the SECOND time. I used the words wonky and lemon to the HP support people. I needed to use stronger language... are they building garbage here? I don't think they're in any risk of making enough money to buy Poland (like Apple). I so wanted to have a better laptop than a Crapbook. I just can't get into the Apple software. I love the OS, but that's about it... and it is slick looking. This bad boy has 3D blu-ray... if it runs... :p

    Dude,,,Chilll........
    And here's why........
If a new notebook, still under factory warranty goes back 3x, HP will replace it with a new one.
So, relax, and hope you have to send it in again, because if you do, and I think you will, you will end up with a new 3200 series ENVY.

I also wanted to know which chip exactly is used by the Envy. Anyone knows?

anyone else having a problem with the Win key getting jammed? I'm not sure if its software or hardware. It's not physically stuck down, it doesnt feel like its getting stuck at all, but from time to time it gets locked on Win for no reason and I have to hit it a few times to get things working again. Its soooo annoying.

I had the same issue - which would only go away when I restarted the computer. I also had an issue with having numbers inserted when typing certain letter key sequences. I had an Envy 17 with F.06 - exchanged it and should be getting my new one on Monday....hopefully without the issue. Rather upsetting these issues occur on an otherwise great computer.

I am hearing august for the 3rd generation i5/i7 for envy 17, but not sure if sources are good. I would have thought HP would plan on a slight redesign/downsize with this but the manual shows the same body style. Perhaps a tad lighter, even if dimensions stay the same.

    From the other Forum:

I hope they wouldn't be asking for preorders for something coming out in August. Next month seems hopeful.

Also, just got my Envy 17 replacement (non-3D). Same typing issue with F.06, reverted to F.05. All that effort/resources for nothing.

    Hello all,

I just ordered an Envy 17t 3000 equipped with a single hybrid hard disk so that I can install an existing hard disk I have in the 2nd bay. I have read that I need to order the hard drive hardware kit (665909-001) to get a mounting tray. Though, does any one have details about adding your own mSATA card in? Is there any special cable or mounting hardware needed for the mSATA card? Also, can you add any SATAII compatible mSATA card or is there a limitation to brand, type, or size for any reason? Finally, does any one have the brand and model of the 128mb mSATA card HP sells to compare specs? Thanks!

Just stay at F.05. I do the same and there are no disadvantages, yet. Perhaps the newer hardware got this issue? Don't know, but one single person here said that he's got a laptop at F.06 without this issue.
Just be happy with the Envy :)

What I can tell you is this:
The 80Gb mSATA II SSD is Intel 310 series.
    Intel® Solid-State Drive 310 Series: Product Specification
The 128Gb mSATA III SSD is Samsung 830 series.
    http://www.samsung.com/us/business/oem-solutions/pdfs/SSD_CompChart-0112_v2.pdf
The Intel has a lower SEQUENTIAL WRITE TIME, but as a boot drive, it will only do RANDOM WRITES, as programs update. The boot drive will not be doing long writes, as in movies or music files, this you will keep off the boot drive, HDD SATA II's are more than adequate for this.
IMO, large sequential write times are not necessary, random writes are needed, and with the frequency of updates, even that's not the priority, fast READS are necessary.

I had the Envy 17-3090NR, the OS and programs were on the mSATA, other ENVY setups used the mSATA as the OS/Program CACHE (same thing the Seagate HiBird does) combined with a HDD for faster boot times.
The 32Gb boot cache, I know nothing about.
All this is set up in the BIOS, it will depend if your BIOS will support the mSATA as a boot drive (has your OS and programs), or as a Boot Cache(OS and programs are on the HDD).
IF, your BIOS does not support the mSATA, you may have to stay with the Hibird, or, get an SSD as the boot drive and use the Hibird as the 2nd HDD in bay 2.
The mSATA plugs directly into the mobo, your notebook may/may not have the hardware dock soldered onto the mobo.

    My set up:
    mSATA as the boot drive,
Bay 1 (750Gb HDD SATA II) was movies/music/p0rn/files/backup etc,
Bay 2 (160GB SSD III) games/CAD/video editing/astronomy programs, stuff that benefits from the SATA III speed.
BTW, you should NOT install any game to the same drive as your OS, software makers even recommend this, read the install instructions.

    IMHO.......
Stick with INTEL, the Intel tool box integrates well, does all the updates for the Intel chip on board, has the TRIM necessary for the SSD, mSATA or not, etc, etc.

The benefit of the INTEL series of SSD's, if you use it as a boot drive, and it needs an update(none sofar, it works very well), you will not have to wipe it and reinstall the OS/programs, the My Digital SSD is a nightmare for this.

IF you chose to change you BIOS to the 3090NR(or equivalent), and you don't brick your notebook, let us know how it works for you.

I got the envy 17 not too long after launch and I am satisfied with the purchase. Problem is the notebook is now shutting down due to overheating when playing games. Anyone experience such a problem? The notebook has no dust blocking the vents.

UPDATE!-- NEVERMIND.. Found the Answer in the forums..
Anyone interested, I got the answer for this:

You might wanna look in the SwSetup\ folder in the C:\ drive (provided you saved it somewhere). Install the Photoshop / Premiere Elements 9 from there, and then check out the following files to get your actual working serials:

    Photoshop : C:\SwSetup\PhotoPIN\AdobePSE9.cva

    Premiere : C:\SwSetup\AdobePE\AdobePremiere9.cva

Open the files with notepad and check the line starting with
