I wonder if black will be a color option...

no it isn't

Nothing too crazy. My crappy Aspire 5920 can do the trick for about a half hour till it overheats (all of the freaking cooling ports are on the bottom). But with the acer it is pretty much photoshop and nothing else. I would like to have a window or two open while doing my thing. I also have a cad program (AutoCad) that I use but it seems to be less demanding than my photoshop habit.

YouTube - HP's NEW Envy 14 laptop -- A Quick Look
Seems like they put more grooves and 1.5mm of elevation at the bottom for more ventilation. -
If you take the dm4t basic config ($730) and add a 1GB 5470 (+$200) you land at $930.
$70 difference seems to be cheap for better GPU and display. But you don't know yet what you will get exactly for $999 with the Envy14 Basic configuration.
More Differences could be:
CPU: dm4t = i5-430M , Envy14 = ? could be a i3-330M
RAM: dm4t = 3 GB , Envy14 = ? could be 2 GB
HDD: dm4t = 320 GB , Envy 14 = ? could be 250 GB -
You will feel like you've died and went to heaven. My work entails video editing and these specs will handle my work with its base specs. I am adding an I5-540M and 160SSD to increase CPU power and decrease loading time.

Everyone that keeps ing about the price, I will buy your envy 14 for you. Seriously, this is a premium laptop, do you want HP to dole these out for free? I will pay whatever premium they want to charge as long as they deliver the premium laptop they advertise.
-
I'm gonna hold you to that! =)
-
The lack of blu-ray option on the Envy 14 was holding me back, but no longer.
I'm gonna pull the trigger on an envy 14 as soon as it's available.
Going to purchase this to complete the package:
Amazon.com: ASUS USB 2.0 6x Blu-Ray Combo External Optical Drive SBC-06D1S-U…
Hopefully in the future I can swap out the 9.5mm DVDRW slot loading drive for a 9.5mm BLURAY slot loading drive. -
It will blow photoshop away.
-
The real question is, can photoshop handle the Envy 14?
-
Yeshhhh, I can't stop laughing every time i look at your avatar.
it's too much... -
I'm pretty sure that the only resolution being offered is 1600x900.. perhaps we won't have to pay the $100 upgrade?
That means that'll I'll be able to config this beast for only $1050... awesome!!!!! -
This pricing thing is confusing, probably just going to have to wait and see. I just wish it would be here sooner, sucks being stuck with my 8 year old home desktop.
-
I think you are correct and there will be no charge for the 1600 x 900 display.
-
as long as I can get an i5, HD 5650, and a screen higher then 1366x768 for $1000 (with student discount), I'll be getting one asap!
how much do you guys thing the upgrade to i7 will be? is it worth it? -
Upgrade from i5 540m to i7 would be around $100-$150. But upgrade from i5 430m to i7 would be much more at around $250. Unless you really need that ~10% boost in power then I would say just stay at i5. It's more than fast enough for most thing. The i7 also produces more heat, just so you know.
-
I hope they offer the i7 620....
-
I've been researching this pretty much all day for the past 4 days (summer is boring...) and from what I can tell from ACTUAL information (excluding speculation) the 1600x900 screen will be the only option. there has been absolutely no evidence there will be any other resolutions offered. really, the most compelling evidence is the spec sheet posted earlier. all the information from that regarding the Envy 17 turned out to be exactly correct, and until we see any actual evidence to the contrary, there is no reason to believe otherwise.
-
They posted all available screen res options for the other Envys... so it makes sense.
This laptop is seeming more perfect as the days go by -
So I take it that's more pixels than 1366x768 but less than 1920x1080p. Is this a good thing or bad thing? I wear glasses and I plan to use the Envy for multitasking with 3-4 windows open at a time. -
Whether it's a good thing really depends on you. I think it's good in that higher pixel density means more crisp images. But if you don't have good vision then you might find the default text size to be too small. My parents prefer me to set the resolution on my 20" monitor to 1024x768 so that the icons and text appear bigger without them having to fiddle with settings.
If you're multitasking and have good vision (when wearing your glasses) then the higher resolution should suit you well. -
That could be a problem. I run my 15.6" laptop on 1366x768 and I find it to be just fine. 1280x800 on a Macbook Pro 13 which I'm giving away seemed alright too. I'm not sure whether I can handle 1600x900.
I might have to settle for a Lenovo T410.
-
just so people are aware that if you are looking at getting an i7 in this laptop that takes away the switchable graphics functionality meaning u loose a lot of that 7 hrs battery life they speak of (which may be less in real use but with i7 extremely decreased)
-
Surely Giz or Engadget will get a review of the 17 up soon... grr.
-
probably have to wait for an NDA to end. It'll come. and if not from them, SOMEONE will.
-
What's NDA?
-
Is there one in effect with the Envy? Is HP concerned with publicity? -
most companies make supplied reviewers sign an NDA with a certain release date so that they can control the publicity of their products. that's why you often see Engadget and Gizmodo release a review for the same product almost simultaneously. although, It's usually for products that aren't released yet, so who knows, maybe they aren't going to review it.
-
No I7-620M.
@Sgogeta just noticed the typo. -
I wish they would put a i7 640lm that would be really nice, not only for cooling but for battery life (FYI i7 640 2.13Ghz - 2.93Ghz turbo boost 4MB cache 25W vs i5 520m 2.4Ghz - 2.93Ghz turbo boost 3MB cache 35W
-
You mean the 640LM, not the 640M. Battery life and cooling won't be drastically different since TDP doesn't accurately represent power consumption (but more the decreased speed).
-
Quick question:
From checking the intel website, the i7-640LM doesn't have something called an "Embedded Option Available." Does that mean it doesn't have an integrated GPU? Or is that different?
Compare Intel® Products, -
What about the datasheet from the official site? It says the resolution is 1366x768 in the specifications. It doesn't mention 1600x900 anywhere.
High Performance Laptops w/ Free Audio Software | HP Envy Features
http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/envy/pdf/envy14_datasheet.pdf -
Hmm.. that datasheet looks authentic, but some things are completely out of whack. Every other source has said that the resolution will be 1600x900. In addition, the datasheet says that the audio in/out jack is combined. However, in the following press picture from Engadget, there are clearly two separate audio in/out jacks: HP Envy 14 and Envy 17 hands-on - Engadget Galleries
-
Hopefully they just have some mistakes on the data sheet. It is authentic though, its from the official site!
Premium Laptop, Professional Audio Laptop | HP Envy -
Wait, there is no VGA on the Envy 14?! That's kind of ridiculous, I think.
-
The person on the you tube video said the i5 would be included for th $999.00 but based on that posting, it seems there is an option for an i3 which I guess is more likely to be included in $999.00 base price.
He also stated there would be 1600x900 screen (did not mention if it would be included or not)
So I can only assume the base model comes with the lower res screen? I was hoping to get both the i5 and 1600 x 900 for the $999.
I really hope the base model does not have less than 4GB ram either
-
if the above is true, then it looks like the dm4 is a better purchase for me.
-
1366x768 is ok, but I am sure if it's true it will be a deal breaker for some
-
Only if you go quad core.
Intel® Core i7 Mobile Processor - Specifications -
Ok, something else just popped up from that spec. It says:
"Get up to 8 hours and 15 minutes of computing time with an HP ENVY
SlimFit Extended-Life battery.(28a)"
Which is not 14 hours as claimed before.
Considering that I5-450M is rated at 35 watt, it looks reasonable, but that's not why I got interested in the laptop, I was really hoping to get 6-7 hours out of standard battery. -
I'm counting on the $999 base model to have these shortcomings (lower res screen, less ram). Again, compared to the dm4t specs and pricing for similar configurations something is fishy.
HP, you've done it again! -
Wth is up with that data sheet. 720p, 8 hours WITH extended battery? What's going on. HP don't be jerk, please, just don't. If that is truly the battery life on the Envy 14 I will be dissappointed. This isn't looking too good.
-
This looks real, but it seems like it's for non-US market (just my guess). Notice the CPU is i5 450M, which isn't even out yet. And there is a "AD EMBARGO DATE" that said 8/22/2010, which is 2 months after the US release date. A little search on "AD EMBARGO DATE" means that it is the date when retailers can advertise about it.
-
This data sheet doesn't mention a 1366x768 screen. What's a commodity plan?
http://www.hp.com/united-states/personal_again/datasheets/envy14_17_ds.pdf -
the specific model on that spec sheet ( FYI, for those that don't know, every possible variation of each HP laptop is given a specific model number, hence the "Envy 14- 1010NR" part. This could be the base $999 model, could not.) seems pretty nice, actually. if that's the base model, I guess we aren't getting an i3 option.
Personally, I would be fine if this is the base model. the only thing that needs upgrading is the screen (probably $100) and it's I'm good! if this isn't the base model, then it tells us nothing. -
1366x768 is a deal breaker for me too.
