I wish TATA (the maker of cheapest car, TATA NANO in world), will start the laptop business with ultra-low cost, performance laptops![]()
-
wait, where exactly did you find that .pdf? I can't find the link to it on the website you linked to.
EDIT: nevermind, I'm blind... -
Haha no thanks, I think we only need one laptop manufacturer making laptops that burst into flames.

There are always new players entering the notebook field. The most recent is Lenovo. They took IBM's traditional business lines, reworked and tweaked them, then added lower-cost consumer budget notebooks. Unfortunately for the gamer, Lenovo doesn't specialize in high-performance/low-cost gaming notebooks to the extent that Asus does.
In the end it's down to the Envy 14 or the T410. I'm not super spec-centric, but I want a notebook with solid build construction that won't fall apart within two years as I've seen many notebooks do so. I'm leaning toward the Envy 14 for the better build construction, a nice screen, and the keyboard. -
If we are getting 8 hours with the extended slim fit battery, then whats the battery life without it?
1/2 hour?
Sorry just a bit upset as it originally stated 14 hours with the slim fit battery, now it looks like all my expectations for this laptop seem to be going out of the window. But I guess we can only wait and see. -
yeah, I'm gonna say something is off...
I took a look at the specsheet for the Envy 17 that is on that same site.
http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/envy/pdf/envy17_datasheet.pdf
and it is also a "1010NR" model. it also has the i5-450m listed. I tried configuring a 17 with that and it's not even an option. it a;so says there is only one combo heaphone/mic jack, and obviously that's not true.
I swear, it seems like the people with the most conflicting info is HP themselves... -
Finally, HP is being honest with their battery life claims. I prefer a real answer rather than some inflated claim like 10+ hours. Come on guys, no need to be sad; if you guys were expecting 6 hours from a 59 watt hour battery...haha
-
Sucks though. A 15" MBP has what, a ~78 Wh battery getting 7-8 hours of battery life in a very power-efficient OS X?
I really dunno what to think is accurate for the Envy 14, but if it's ~4 hours... bummer.
-
No thanks. I worked with TATA engineering when I was at Chrysler. Zero sense of the bigger picture. Almost got me canned because of their subpar performance and false promises... doesn't matter because I left Chrysler anyways...
-
My dreams and hopes are shattered. I need to change my sig...
I will wait for the ACTUAL base specs when the laptop comes out...
But the battery life is a big let down, that was my main purpose to getting this machine (along with the specs).
I am not buying this laptop till I read enough reviews. If they are bad, I am going with asus ul/jc/vt 30 systems.
This is ridiculous. -
8.25 hours with the slimfit battery? They should have just added an extra half a centimeter and upped the wattage.
I wouln't be so angry about this if they hadn't created such a PR storm about the great battery life, but really HP, it won't help you sell more units if you end up dissapointing the buyers, no matter how hyped they are.
Anyone got a link to another interesting laptop? -
I really think something is off here. there is a lot of wrong information on those spec sheets, both of them. I don't care if they come from HP, I don't trust them.
-
They are not wrong, HP's PR was wrong.
-
QFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also in the market for another NON HP LAPTOP. -
no, they are literally wrong. especially the one for the Envy 17.
Explain who you mean by "HP's PR"?
If you are talking about the youtube videos, then you are wrong. those were not PR people. one was the director of the Envy line, and the other is the lead notebook designer at HP.
Is everyone forgetting the earlier discussion in this thread? most people with the knowledge to calculate such things figured the battery life would be about 5-6 hours on the internal 8cell battery. add a 6 cell slice on to that and I think 8 1/2 hours sounds just about right.
nothing has changed. -
What is QFT?
It seems implausable that an 8 cell battery provides a whole 5.5 hours compated to a 6 cell slice providing just 2.7. I know nothing on the subject, though, so we shall see what happens when reviews start coming in.
Also, two things have changed. The battery life w/o slice has dropped 2 hours, and the battery life w/ slice has dropped 6 hours. -
I feel like this new spec sheet is simply an Envy13 spec sheet that was improperly updated for the Envy14. I say this because it seems to have some of the base specs the Envy13 had (res, headphone jack, and battery life), though it has some of the new specs announced in every video (i5, 5650, mini-display port). Also, the Envy13 no longer figures on the the HP website with all the Envys (14, 15, 17)
In any case, everyone that is becoming all emo because of this random new claimed battery life needs to take a breather, not go /wrists and simply WAIT for the release. I see no reason why this laptop shouldn't get close to the 7 hours claimed battery life (from the videos) with integrated Intel graphics, low brightness screen, BT off, and doing some office work. That's what switchable graphics are all about! -

It's very possible that PR just screwed up this datasheet.
-
Just so long as HP knows that that 720p screen is a deal breaker for most of their prospective buyers. I believe the guy in Engadget(?)'s video claimed that HP got feedback from customers that they like their screen real estate or something to that effect, so if there's no 900p option, they better expect sales to suffer (after all there's the dm4 lol).
-
Yeah, the dm4 is probably what I'll get if the Envy 14 doesn't work out. I'm just a little ticked that I have to wait until June 27th to even see if the Envy 14 will be a good choice... I'm traveling out of the country on July 15th, and I want to get my laptop before then... so it's pretty tight.
-
Another thing confusing on that data sheet is the advertising embargo date. The sheet states August 22nd! I believe I have read in a number of forums they are expected to be available to order on June 27th ????
Other issues:
The datasheet only mentions HDMI - if I remember correcly it has a mini display port connector as well.
No where do they mention the "radiance" display - on the videos with the HP laptop guys they can't shutup about it.
Given the other retailer/distributor oriented info on the bottom right - pallet weigh info, etc this was probably aimed at the CDW and Ingram Micro's of the world.

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
The HP PR is ineffective, at its best. They are to control external communications that are made from HP.
There is no excuse that the youtube guys have for giving us the ''wrong'' specs. There is no excuse that the envy SPECIAL SITE ha contradicting specs.
So yes the PR is at fault here, if they can't brief people for a CLOSED pre-release, at different days through out the ''world'' (only US and Europe). They are incompetent.
Its the bare minimum to expect that the PR job is done. If they are trying to develop this MUSE concept to its line, we have to see that the publicity is a major part, to put the new line in a different level.
Incompetent, pure and simple -
in real usage, the 15" mbp only gets 5-6 hours. just like hp, apple has inflated battery claims
-
isnt it a 6 cell internal, 6 cell slim?
-
I'm pretty sure it's actually 8-cell.
-
I hereby declare the newly release data sheet invalid

You'll note that on the site that links to the spec sheet ( High Performance Laptops w/ Free Audio Software | HP Envy Features) it says
I'd guess that the extended battery, listed on the sheet as an 8 cell, gives ~8 hours and the internal (guessing here) 6(?) cell gives about 6 hours for a total of 14? -
that is the other possibility. The Slice battery is not even monetioned on the new specsheet, so this could very well simply be the internal's battery life.
KEEP HOPE ALIVE!!!!
...no, but seriously, none of this changes my opinion of this mythical beast even one bit. until I hear otherwise from someone with a unit in their hands (hee hee...) this is the end-all, be-all of laptops!!!!11!1111!! -
My guess is internal gives 4.5 - 6 hours, and external 3.5-4.5. (after adjusting for "real world" power use).
At max load a 56wh battery would only get ~2 hours... but no-one expects to use max load on battery. -
I wish they ditched the optical drive to reduce the bulk and added USB 3.0 and a media card reader instead. That would truly be perfect.
-
That must be it, the description sort of sounds like the added slice battery, but the phrase
"slim fit extended battery" could also refer to the rather slim non standard 8 cell battery that comes with the envy 14.
YouTube - HP Envy 14
Most importantly, NO WHERE in that pdf for the SPECIFIC envy 14 1010nr model, was a "slice" battery mentioned. -
whoa that thing says up to 3738MB of video memory? can someone explain that to me?
-
dedicated video ram (1 GB) + system memory (rest)
-
It does have a card reader. USB 3.0 would be awesome, but it has eSATA, which is a decent substitute.
A lot of people still use optical media (most, actually). It's worth it, I believe. -
If they are going to stick with the optical drive, which I understand, they should at least make it a Bluray..
-
they would if they could, but no one makes a slot loading bluray drive small enough to fit in the drive bay right now. I would bet one is released within 6 months, and you could install it yourself if you really really want it.
-
Dunno about that. Apple have been waiting for a slimmed down blu ray drive to squeeze in their macbook pros for over a year and still no dice.
-
there are other factors holding bluray back from macs than just that... but I don't want to get into that now.
-
Ah you're right! The card reader is on the front-right of the machine.
I have a feeling the Envy 13 will get an update at the end of this year, and that will truly fit the bill (slimmer, lighter, usb 3.0, etc.) -
I agree that ditching the optical drive would be nice. Could add a better heatsink/fan combo and maybe include a better GPU (5830 anyone?). Or a bigger battery (12 hours would be sweet). Or an extra HD bay... They should have at least made the 14 upgradable to 2 micro sata drives like they did with the Envy 15 (that was brilliant).
-
if they don't offer the 1600*900 radiance display in the uk it will definitely be a deal-breaker... and an i5-5xx series... if they want to charge me £999 for it at least give me a good upgrade rather than just more ram... stupid HP PR's
-
You can always remove the ODD yourself and bolt another drive in there.
-
apple doesn't like blu-ray. steve jobs said it in one of his presentations. they believe in digital media
-
I'm sure he'd like for everyone to buy digital media off the itunes store
-
Now we know of two different specs for E14 quick-ship models:
The German ENVY 14-1010eg -- date: perhaps end of June
i5-520M
4 GB DDR3 (2 x 2048 MB)
HD+ High-Definition LED HP Radiance Infinity Display 1600 x 900
The US (?) ENVY 14-1010NR -- date: 8/22/2010
i5-450M
6 GB DDR3 (2 DIM) --- EDIT: I wrongly wrote 3 GB before
High Definition HP BrightView Infinity LED Display (1366x768)
... some other differences which could be Errors in the specs
The difference in the two displays are "Radiance 1600x900" compared to "BrightView 1366x768". That should mean that the high brightness of 350 nit will only be achieved by the "Radiance" model.
Compared with the wording in the E17 specs it could mean 200 nit for the "BrightView" display.
People in the USA shouldn't worry. They can always custom config their Eny 14 as they want. In other countries we have to depend on import or the one quick ship configuration HP wants us to buy.
There never was a VGA planed for the E14, but you could buy a HDMI to VGA Converter.
Where did you get the new battery life for the standard battery?
I think the guy in the video said something about 7 hours with standard and 14 hours with "slice".
There could be the possibility that HP plans to release a new "SlimFit Extended-Life" battery with a greater capacity which just fits in the same Slot as the normal standard battery. That could explain the small extension from 7 hours to 8:15 hours.
Using an aditional "slice battery" could also be possible with the new battery. That could push battery life to 8:15 + 7 = 15:15 hours
...
Of course he believes in digital media!
He only gets his share if you buy your media through iTunes and not if you buy your blu-ray at amazon.

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
where have you got the 3g ram? its nowhere
-
I'm new to this forum since the asus ul30jt.
BUT...
this forum has me speculating and bring my hopes up, then releasing new "data" which breaks my heart, then says "the slice batter is not really mentioned in the new data"
I am so confused. I am going to stop following this thread and postings till june 27th. You guys are an emotional rollercoaster and breaking my heart, but keep wanting it back, haha. I just don't know anymore.
Like I said before, I am not going to trust any speculation or "inside theories". I am just going to sit back and wait for a REAl review.
Sorry for acting like a grom or noob, I just don't know what to think of this machine anymore. ha, I suck at this forum. -
i have just contacted HP about the new datasheet info compared to the previous PDF and also what Barry Ferris specified the base configuration to be on the demo videos.... last time i contacted HP about the mistakes on the Envy website they had made they changed them within 24hrs so lets hope they change something of at least email me whats going on so i can report
-
Sorry for that.
I misread the specs. The correct value ist 6 GB.
It's not mentioned because that are the specs for a quick-ship model in which the optional slice battery is not included.
These Ups and Downs are part of the fun while waiting for the release of new hardware
Me I'm just confused enough that I could preorder one as soon as possible just to see what I get, without waiting for a bunch of reviews as I would normally do. (based on a german law I have the option to simply return it within two weeks for a full refund
