I sent an Email to Barry Ferris with a link to this thread. Slim-to-none chance that he stops by, but you never know.

Also, there appear to be lines on trackpad on the Envy 14 datasheet too:
http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/envy/pdf/envy14_datasheet.pdf
*sigh* -
Interesting on that pdf, because it says resolution will be 1366x768
-
Thats what Im guessing the stock screen res will be.

this laptop is cool and all but in 6 months sandy bridge will be out. I do need a small portable laptop with switcxhable integrated graphics to complement my mammoth m17x desktop replacement and the envy 14 was lookin good but I mean I can wait 6 months for sandy bridge. It's gonna have a very well designed graphics switching platform with integrated graphics 2x more powerful then current without using more power. It's basically gonna be faster and more battery life as the whole architecture will be 32nm.
If you have a decent laptop now my advice is to wait for sandy bridge. If you have crap now and need a computer then pull the trigger. -
Firstly thanks to all the regular posters of this thread I have been following as aguest for ages and have been SO impressed I finally had to join to get my 2 cents in too, haha you pushed me...
>Loving the envy 14 wayy too much now too
Not flaming you or anything but even then once you have waited your six months for "sandy bridge" I'm pretty sure that again there will be something equally more powerful to replace it. >>There is a theory name to this I can't remember it's name.
Has anyone seen a nice sleeve for this laptop yet? I would have imagined that HP etc would surely be producing accesories etc by now...
Literally can't wait for this laptop, no doubt I have hyped it up in my head but it does look pretty special and I can't wait to max it up! > Presuming that the $999 base price doesn't cover the extras do we have estimates on some upgrades? I compared to other HPs but to me the pricing didn't seem difinitive...
thanks for this thread again lol it is my life atm haha
-
well i can wait cause i have an m17x with dual gpu's. I got plenty of performance now I just have crap battery life on the go. I wouldn't wait for the next thing after sandy bridge that would be like over a year wait. Sandy bridge is close tho.
-
Oh. damn. niceeee
haha, fair do's!
I'm not really a fan of IGP that much, though have to say AMD w/ Fusion and INTEL w/Sandy Bridge does look good
though for when it comes into market I think it will be more like 2011.
-
The mobile part of Sandy bridge will not launch in the next 6 months. First they release the desktop parts and see how they run in general. Why does it matter if switchable gfx become 2 times as strong? Play games with 15fps instead of 7fps now? You still need a dedicated gfx card in the end...
-
There's also AMD Fusion...
-
Sandy bridge will probably launch in Q1/2011. How long before a mobile version is released and how long before that mobile version finds its way into a notebook? Could be a year from now. From what I have heard about fusion, it will be directed at netbooks at first.

lol,
just repeated exactly what I said!
Woop for NJ btw
Anyone news on Envy 14? -
Yea it was more a summary than a real thought
.
GO FLYERS! -
Have german stores put the HP envy 14 as available to buy or pre-order? you are able to put in a quantity of units but i can't read german...
-
Its buy already, with up to four weeks of delivery time now...

Bad news, looks like BCB is getting canceled on 30 July 2010
Slashdot Search Story | Microsoft Cancels Bing Cashback Program
Hopefully they release at least one last 25%+ BCB offer for HP laptops before it goes away. Sad day
-
The Envy 17 has an estimated arrival date of July 1st at Komplett.no. The Envy 14 probably won't arrive before August, then, but I hope I'm wrong. The good news is the price. Komplett are going to sell the Envy 17 for 9995 NOK for the base configuration, which equals 1265, or $1515, only 8% more than the US base price of $1399. I'm used to seeing the prices almost double compared to US, so this is great! It should indicate a price of about 7000 NOK for the base Envy 14, which means I should be able to get that 1600x900 radiance screen and an added battery slice for under 10000 NOK, which is my budget. This is officially "Goodbye, Acer 3820TG!"
-
I really do hope the envy14 doesn't come to europe and the rest of the world as late as august... i would be royally p****d off
-
NO BCB? You serious?
-
I found there are currently four webshops listing the Envy 17 in Norway: Søk - Prisguide.no
Most of them estimate delivery in the beginning of July, with the exception of Amentio, who has an unconfirmed date two days in the future. The unconfirmed dates at Amentio are usually not reliable, though. My guess is they won't have it before the start of July either. So if this is any indication of how long it will take to get the Envy 14 over here, I would say around August 10 is realistic, which is acceptable to me, as I won't be needing a laptop much during the summer. I do need it when the new semester starts at the university, which is August 23. This is looking good. Of course, I hope HP will get it here sooner! -
With Bing Cash Back ending by Jul 30, is there anything we can do to get the word out to HP? I'd like to see a final 25 or 30% BCB announced at least at or shortly after the Envy 14's launch. I think one reason that the Envy 15 gen 1 sold so well initially was because of the BCB. It would really behoove HP to press MS significantly, especially as HP is such a large customer of MS - after all, each of those Envy models is being sold with a Windows 7 OS (Unfortunate, in my opinion. I would love to see a Linux or OS-Free Envy option, but alas that will never happen).
-
Don't worry, there will be a $450 off coupon at some point.
-
Thinking they'll give at launch a coupon worth 450$ nearly half the value of the starting pack or 1/3 the value of a model with upgrade is dellusive.
When bcb was new and needed to be hyped of course it was possible, but with bing dying ? I'm doubting it. Won't be more than the usual 5-10% bcb imo. -
Today Cyberport, one of Germany's biggest Online-Stores, published the Envy 14 with availability date of July 1st.
Waiting eagerly for this machine to be available for it will definitely my next Laptop. -
How well will the hp envy 14 handle games? Will it be able to handle RTS games like SC2, league of legends and heroes of newerth at max settings? Will it be able to play the latest MMORPGs and FPSs? I know it isn't out yet but I am hoping some tech savvy person could look at the specs and let me know. I am looking for a portable yet powerful laptop I can take to college in the fall. I mostly will be doing computer programming with java, surfing the web, listening/downloading music, playing streaming videos and gaming whenever I get the chance.
What is the highest graphics card it will offer and will it be directx11 compatible? -
I've been following this thread up ever since l3vi suggested I wait for the Envy 14 in the "What notebook should I buy" section.
Would it be logical to estimate an Envy 14 with the following specifications to cost roughly $1200?
Intel Core i5-520M Processor
4 GB RAM
320 GB 7200rpm HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
1600x900 display -
Norway is the land of grossly overpriced electronics. I was in Lefdal yesterday and came across an Envy 13 with 166 x 768 screen for a laughable price, among other rip offs.
For these new Envy models, the Norway market will see savage premium costs for the add ons or the intial price will be limited to a small number of customers and then the real price kicks in. -
The ENVY14 *should* cut through all those games maxed. It has a DX11 HD5650, a medium-high range mobile card that is quite fast for most of everything. Cutting edge games will get a little rough, so you might have to lower the settings in games like bad company 2 and the upcoming crysis 2, etc.
-
Ah, I thought I saw somewhere that the hp envy could have the HD5830. I could be wrong. I am having trouble deciding between the HP envy 14, hp envy 15, hp envy 17 and the hp dv6tse. The Hp envy 15 looks great on paper but I hear it has a lot of heat issues.
-
yer Envy 15's biggest flaws are the heat issues and battery life (definitely not a mobility platform when running on battery)!
-
Some stores in Sweden announced envy 17 on the 1st of july. Two different models:
Envy 17-1080: 1600 x 900 (Non-Radiance) Radeon HD5850, Core i5-450M, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD±RW for 1470 USD
Envy 17-1085: Full-HD screen (Radiance) Radeon HD5850,Core i7-720QM,6GB RAM,500GB HDD,DVD±RW for 1830 USD
One question: Is all Envy 17 GDDR5? AND does all Envy 17 have backlit keyboard? -
Your thinking of the ENVY 17 that has the HD5850. There was some banter when these were first announced that the HD5850 would be in the ENVY 14 but I think there is enough evidence that they will not fit in the ENVY 14 chasis. If you want a desktop replacement laptop, this would probably be the route you would want to go.
However, if you are looking for a mobility lap, the HD5650 is probably the best there is at the moment in a "small" frame laptop.
Just looking at some results posted at notebookcheck you would probably be looking at Med. Settings for the best performance/graphic quality. Up the resolution and in High detail you will start running into some performance drop. Don't worry about dropping your quality down, even low quality on most games that are released these days still look pretty good (BF:BC2 as an example).
Ideally you want to have a FPS around 30... IIRC, 30 is as high as the average human eye can detect. (As I post this, I have a feeling someone is going to correct this statement.) -
I believe the HD 5850 in the Envy 17 likely uses GDDR3 memory. From what I understand, the HD 5850 mobile can taker either 1024MB of GDDR3 or 512MB of GDDR5 memory. As far as the backlit keyboard goes, yes. The Envy 14 and Envy 17 both have a backlit keyboard that is controlled by a single button on the keyboard.
It would be wonderful if the Envy 14 was able to be equipped with an HD5830... I think that would make it nothing short of amazing, assuming it lives up to all these claims. That being said, it seems the Envy 14 will definitely only have an HD 5670 in it. -
There are numerous source state that envy 17 comes with GDDR5, here is one:
HP Envy 17-1008tx Notebook PC (WY371PA) specifications - HP Home & Home Office products
And I don't think there is an MR HD 5670? The only version of 56xx series is 5650.
Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 -
That's strange, but I definitely could be wrong about an HD 5850 with 1GB of GDDR5.
As far as the 5670 goes, that was a typo on my part, and you're right-- it's definitely the 5650. -
lol... you can always overclock it to make it an "5670"...
-
I've actually heard the mobile 5650 can overclock decently in many laptops. I still don't know if it's big enough to make more than a few FPS difference in most games, though.
-
can somebody remind me what kind of battery life we're looking with say a 6-cell at considering that it's switchable? The HP PDF (which seems to only show max specs for everything) says 8-cell, but anyway...
5-6 hours real world use? i.e., no gaming, wifi on, maybe 60% brightness. Will having a higher-res screen have a negative impact on battery life? -
Sounds good if cyberport sells the radiance 1600* version at 1300€ the 1366* (best for gaming) should hit around 1100€. A 999$ release of an i5 version 1366 becomes more and more obvious.
-
A comparable computer performance-wise would be Acer 3820TG, which has the same graphics card and the same range of processors (approximately). Hendrickson has overclocked the HD5650 in his Acer 3820TG considerably, raising the 3DMark06-score from around 7400 at stock speeds to over 9000 at OC, without much increase in heat. Also check out this video where he's playing BBC2 at max settings (except AA). Very, very playable framerates. That machine has a Core i5-430 and Ati HD5650, overclocked. The base configuration for the Envy is going to be at least as good when it comes to raw specs (i5-450 and up, HD5650).
That said, we can't be sure the Envy will be as overclockable as the 3820TG, considering heat. The cooling system of the 3820TG has proved to be nothing short of amazing, both quiet and effective. Let's hope the Envy will do the cooling job just as well.
For more on the performance of 3820TG in games, check out the owner's lounge. -
With the slice, maybe.
-
Yes the higher resolution will have a bit of an impact on battery life.
21 days to go?

ahh, the joys of waiting for grad school acceptance..
-
i'm going to grad school too! what are u applying for?
-
Master of Public Admin @ CSU Fullerton, Long Beach, and San Jose State. I really want to go to Fullerton tho.
-
Bit worrying to se that the Swedish/Norwegian Envy 17 is just availabe with the radiance screen together with the i7 cpu.
-
How Intel and AMD will make 2011 the year of the laptop
So sandy bridge and amd fusion are expected to give huge boosts to laptop performance...even the article writer stated that if you can wait until 2011 for your laptop upgrade..you should...
So...in that case, what is a good alternative laptop for college this fall until the new 2011 laptops come out? -
We all know that when marketing goes "huge boost" it means 25 to 50% of cpu power. Alas it translates to 5% of gaming power at best with current gpus which arn't cpu limited at all on the icore series, and even on the older SU series. To me it is just a way too far mirage to pass up the envy 14.
-
agreed. 2011 is a long wait and people need laptops NAO
-
damn it... I almost want to wait... again
