Good grief. Why stop at 1366x768. You can make that argument endlessly until we get to 640x480.
1366x768 blows donkey d1ck for most of the people interested in this laptop. Try using two documents side by side at that resolution.

If it's the caliber of hte Envy 13 screen, I liked the Envy 13 better than a Vaio Z. It's marginal though.
-
Do you guys have any idea how well this laptop will perform on Linux?
Does the GPU, for instance, have good drivers in Linux? -
I can only second that.. Once you go to higher resolution screens (given you have the eyesight for it), you wont go back..
I am actually disappointed there is no Full HD option available. It cant be the possible DPI, as the Envy 13 screen shows. -
I haven't seen any Envy's up close, so I'm not sure how the design on the lid is put on. Is it grooved in sorta like knock down on paint dry walls, or all smooth? I wouldn't be too sure how the skins would fit if it had little nooks and crannys on it. If it's a smooth design, then obviously no problem for the skins.
-
I've never seen/felt it either. Because of the laser-etched design, my guess is that when you stick the skin onto it, the sticker would probably sink into those etched holes.yanksno1 said: ↑I haven't seen any Envy's up close, so I'm not sure how the design on the lid is put on. For those of you looking to make a few days pass quickly while you wait for this, I highly recommend going out drinking for a few days, works wonders

Heavy? 5 lbs? The 11.6" M11x weighs 4.5 lbs. My current 15" weighs almost 7.5 lbs. It's quite light for its size, components, and all metal chassis.esumsea said: ↑Man this thing is really heavy for a 14 inch!
About the viewing angles, it is a TN panel, no? That would limit the viewing angles right there.
Does anyone think that the screen will trump the vaio Z's?Click to expand...
The laser etching is probably only a fraction of a millimeter deep and not real wide. The skin is somewhat thick and will easily span the gaps. I'm sure if you pushed down the skin really hard it might show a hint of the laser etch, but I doubt it.Jolly Roger said: ↑I've never seen/felt it either. Except I'm not in a hurry, I still have to sell my M11x and have some other income coming in that I have to wait a week or so for anyways before I can buy it.

For the weight: it is 14.5" which is not the standard 14.1" size, it is slightly larger. Also it is made of metal, which probably contributes towards its weight. So the weight seems fine to me, I'm just worried over the final price...

Funny, I drink all day long, every day, and it doesn't seem to help me pass the time any easier.addyct said: ↑For those of you looking to make a few days pass quickly while you wait for this, I highly recommend going out drinking for a few days, works wonders

They need to at least put the configuration page up so we can play with it!

Yeah, I wish that they would. They should do some sort of pre-order thing as well about a week out.maverickar15 said: ↑They need to at least put the configuration page up so we can play with it!Click to expand...

Yea that'd be my guess too which is a bit unfortunate. I'd bet it'd still be better then the design though, just wish it was smooth for a cleaner look.Jolly Roger said: ↑I've never seen/felt it either. Unless the skin you put on is thinner than plastic food wrap, you probably won't see the indents. They're really really shallowyanksno1 said: ↑Yea that'd be my guess too which is a bit unfortunate. I'm returning my dv6t:se I ordered two days ago for the blu-ray, 520m and the $200 coupon (hopefully they can stop the order in the factory else it's coming my way anyway).

Can't wait to get my hands on one of these.
How long will it take to ship after you place an an order?
I'm hoping for no more than 2 weeks -
I wanna see a review of it.. but I can't find one.
Review of the dv6t, that is.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I mean that being said. His screen somehow looks brighter than my G1's.
...which is kinda confusing but I'll chalk it up to "Dude it's a dell and it's a super WXGA LCD or something."
..god damn I still dunno how we got that computer for 800 bucks last year -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I guess I should play around with his a bit more though 'cause I didn't try that one thing I'm gonna be doing some of on the computer (side by side word or word on one side webpage on the other) or something.

Eh. I'm still following the Envy 14. Similar specs, just a bit smaller. I barely watch blu-ray movies, anyway.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah.
I'm still following the envy14 too. 'cause even though I bought (and am now returning that one dv6t:se) ...hell I'm still torn on just waiting on the envy14. but all the issues with the 17 (case not fitting right) and 15 + 17 (weird high pitched noise and static on the sound) got me a little worried.
doesn't help that I'm impatient. -
Isn't there a method to fix the high pitched sound? Wow, we'll probably see these problems in the 14 also. What a turn off. By the way, what do you mean by the case not fitting right?MagusDraco said: ↑I'm still following the envy14 too. and by big bruhahaha I mean "I don't like this"
but when I looked at the pictures it was more "ehhh...I don't noticed that and one dude said tightening the screws fixed it"
so *shrugs*
and yeah there was a fix for the sound issues. It was something like "turn on listen to mic. Then mute the listening of the mic in the sound panel on win 7" -
I was playing around with the 13 earlier today and I have a question about it.
Is the trackpad suppose to be similar to the MBP's? If so, is it suppose to be a giant click button? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it was the envy17 not the 15 that had the case deforming issue:

Yes it is VERY similar to the Macbooks. Envy 15 owners said that it was terrible though, as Macbook owners loved it. Maybe the refresh fixed it, I don't know for sure.tr1p7s said: ↑I was playing around with the 13 earlier today and I have a question about it.

The new Envy 14 is suppose to be powered by Synaptics and it is most likely that they DID fix the issues with the trackpad.
Whoa that is ugly.MagusDraco said: ↑it was the envy17 not the 15 that had the case deforming issue:

envy 15s had the issue (but they fixed it by unscrewing and lining up and rescrewing it) -
Hmm.. is it me or does the Envy 17 look cheaped up compared to the Envy 15?
-
It's cause it is ... HP is cutting corners to make the Envy 17 (and I bet the Envy 14) as cheap as possible).Jolly Roger said: ↑Hmm.. is it me or does the Envy 17 look cheaped up compared to the Envy 15?Click to expand...

The dumb keyboard flex too. Eh, never mind, I probably won't even mind that as much. Maybe THATS why the price is so low. Eh, I don't know.badtzwang said: ↑It's cause it is ... HP is cutting corners to make the Envy 17 (and I bet the Envy 14) as cheap as possible).Click to expand...

Keyboard flex is overrated on these forums.
-
In any case, it is best to return a laptop you're not happy with. If it bugs you at first, it will most likely make you more irritated later. Also, more returns or exchanges with similar issues, the more likely they are to address it. In most cases, it's a quality and/or process issue that can be fixed fairly readily.
-
I just realized that a backlight keyboard wouldn't matter to me. Because I NEVER look at my keyboard as I memorized all the keys already and am a really great typer. I can thank those 5 years I spent playing MMORPG's as a kid in stead of going outside lol

Well when I was playing with it, it wouldn't click when I clicked the middle of it. I mean, it would make the clicking noise, but no action was performed. However, the click buttons worked fine though. Furthermore, the trackpad failed to turn off when I double clicked the top left. Was this problem fixed? And is it still present in the refreshes and the E17? -
EDIT: Wrong thread
-
So I take it the gaps in the seams is strictly an Envy 17 problem?
-
It was on the envy 15 too but, all you needed to do was tighten screws, I believe it's the same for the Envy 17. Not that big a deal, but still a peeve nonetheless.
-
It is annoying because this is supposed to be HP's best consumer line laptop, but as long as it is easily fixable I'm still getting it.L3vi said: ↑It was on the envy 15 too but, all you needed to do was tighten screws, I believe it's the same for the Envy 17. The only problem is if I can order and get my laptop by 7/10 or not. I'm going overseas in mid-July and again in August. They had to pick release date of 6/27 for Envy 14. -
It's called quality control. I hope they can learn from two mistakes so far and make it a slam bang home run with the Envy 14.

As far as I know ... the Envy laptops do not have a touchpad where you are able to click on ALL parts of the clickpad. The clickable areas are limited towards the bottom of the touchpad. This is where it differs from the Macbook Pros as these are able to click anywhere..tr1p7s said: ↑Well when I was playing with it, it wouldn't click when I clicked the middle of it. From something I've read recently ... Synaptics is coming out with an improved touchpad which should have better drivers and the clickable anywhere functionality. Some people are speculating that the Envy 14 may feature this new touchpad, but I doubt it -

All of this bad news about build quality is really making me nervous about the Envy 14. It doesn't matter if they shave 100 bucks off the starting price, if the laptop doesn't feel premium, I might as well go for an Asus, for 300 dollars less. At this rate I might be in for another year of waiting for a premium PC laptop...

Similar dilemma. I start apartment hunting around July. I'd like to avoid having to ask my family members to ship it to me as that would cost extra money. -
Now's probably the best time to start looking at viable alternatives just in case the E14 turns out to be a flop. I'll be looking over my options.Motoid said: ↑All of this bad news about build quality is really making me nervous about the Envy 14.
