Hmm, that power brick looks to be the same size as the one that comes with the Envy 15. Are you comparing against older HP power bricks for other models?
-
Interesting note, while discussing the Envy 14 in this video, Stacy Wolff of HP says, "this slot-load goes all the way up to a Blu-ray."
He must have been confusing it with the 17. -
Well in my case I just started my first day of the 21 days try out and i will be thinking very hard on whether i keep this 15 or exchange it for the new 14 coming out. as of now the current configuration i got is as follows:
1920x1080 anti glare screen, Core i720QM, 8GB DDR3 RAM, USB3.0, 500GB HDD, Blue-Ray - DVD/RW Drive, Secondary 9 Cell Battery, and needless to say the ATI 5830 Video Card. So unless this laptop crashes on me, it will be a hard decision to downgrade to the lower 5650 card. Thats my only concern so far, unless the 5830 could be available as an upgrade option which is unknown so far. Who knows ???. I got 20 more days to go to find out more about the upgrades of the envy 14. -
If they do offer the 5830 in the 14 inch. Damn. That's really impressive. But I don't think it's possible in such a small chassis. With or without it, no other 14 inch notebook competes spec-wise. I can hardly wait till June. I'm still waiting to see if it's true that the 14 comes with a quad-core (even though I won't get one).
-
June 27th.
-
The 5650 is pushing 1600x900 vs a 5830 pushing 1920x1080. I think real game performance at native resolution will be close.
What it really boils down to is if you want a smaller body to carry around or a larger, higher res screen. Of course there's the battery life and integrated ODD too. -

Does it come with the 620m?
-
Take this for what it's worth too, my envy 15 fits inside of a 17" macbook pro incase sleeve
Wonder if the 14" will fit in the 15" sleeve.
I can't believe I'm saying this but the downgraded gpu is a big -1; I wish we knew for sure whether or not the 5830 would be a reality in the 14". -
Not sure where your going with this. What are you trying to say?
-
that its big. i believe he is questioning the portability of the hp envy 14 for those who were hoping for something that is mbp 13-sized.
-
I don't doubt it'll be bigger than most 14" notebooks. It's a 14.5" screen which is the first I've heard of on a notebook. Anyone else know of one so we can get an idea of the possible dimensions? I'm okay with it being a little bigger.
-
It would be amazing if it were. I can't see HP doing that though without just killing off the Envy15 entirely.
-
Guys... take a look at this image of the Envy 14.
Notice in the middle, there's like a square of sorts. What is that? On the front edge in-between the speaker grills, the square. It's not the memory card reader, pretty sure that's on the far right. Is it a button? Button for what?
It's driving me nuts. -
IrD? 10 chars.
-
On the left side of the laptop, Slot Loading Optical Drive, 2 USB, Headphone Jack, Headphone/Mic Jack.
On the right side of laptop, Power input, Ethernet, Kensington Lock, Mini Displayport, HDMI, USB/ESATA.
Looks like the slot in the front could be a Memory Card reader. Sure looks like its the size. -
No, he means the square dead center of the front.
-
Yup. That's it.
What is that? -
I found a picture on Slash gear comparing the 17 inch and 14 inch side to side.
So i Measured the 17 inch in pixels and compared it to the dimesions that are around the net. Then multiplied the mm/pixel with the pixel length of the 14 inch.
Anyway i come out with the width of the Envy 14 to be 356mm This is a very very rough estimate working of a photograph. So dont go blaming me if it is wrong. And chances are that it is wrong but it kind of does make sense seeing as most 14 inch laptops are 340-350mm and since the Envy 14 is a 14.5 inch screen, i think 356mm is alright. -
hhahah what is that?
i remember reading a previous post that there's a battery indicator similar to macbook pros that lights up. i don't think that is it.... -
Ohhh ok my bad .... As the person right above me said, it might be where they put the indicator lights. That's my best guess too.
-
i think its a super battery pack that allows you to get over 9000 hours of battery
-
If envy 14 really came with a 5830 then I think I have found the laptop I have been searching for. If not then.... i'll keep looking
-
to me the 5830 would just be a bonus. If its standard with:
1600x900, 4GB, i5, 5650, and least 2 USB ports and a 7200RPM HDD
Then I'll buy it. I might up to a 5830 if its an option, but that might be the only option I get, unless it has a very nicely priced SSD option.
EDIT: as long at the touch pad is better than the ENVY15 -
When I first used my Envy 15, the touch pad was great. Now that I've reformatted and reinstalled Windows, even after installing the latest drivers, I can't get it to work well anymore. Even a simply task like clicking and holding with the left button, then using a second finger to drag an icon around gets botched (it usually tries to open the program as soon as the second finger goes down). I've tweaked every setting in the control panel with no luck.
Anyway, I wish I could get some sort of confirmation on the base specs. If it does come with a 1600x900 E2E glass display, i3 or i5, HD 5650 (switchable), and at least a 6 cell battery all for $999, I'll be returning my Envy 15. My biggest fear is that the base configuration will only have integrated Intel graphics (despite the various interviews stating otherwise), or the base screen will be crappy, or they'll get you somewhere else. To me, sacrificing the HD 5830 would be well worth the additional battery life and the removal of the shortcut keys. -
That's my biggest concern, hope it's not the same ole touchpad.
Also disheartened that it has the same floral design, but I'll live. I wish they would have used the circles on the dv series or plain styling like the Envy 13. -
For the Canadians out there who are wondering:
Not totally useful I guess but it gives you that hope that this baby will be released in Canada soon after the US. -

I have the same issues and the HP machines have a high failure rate.
- does hp have intl. warranty on the envy series??
- whats the best place to purchase envy laptops from US :- hp online , showrooms, amazon ??? -
I usually think that buying direct is best, as you can get a custom-to-order notebook. As I like to get the highest end components that matter and aren't really user replaceable, I need to CTO because the "prefab" options are typical "Base model" "Base model + 1" and "256gb SSD + 8gb of overpriced RAM fully loaded $4000 monstrosity", where they want you to buy the overpriced SSD, Ram and whatnot to get a better screen, video card, processor etc... thus I need to customize it myself.
-
The problem might be in the latest drivers. Try using the drivers that shipped originally with the notebook. i had the exact same problem with the new drivers.
-
Pretty sure what you mentioned are the base specs. I'm almost positive there is no option for only integrated graphics. I would bet money on it.
-
So the 14 has an 8-cell battery? Interesting. No wonder the Envy 14 is heavier than the Envy 15, has a bigger battery and an OD. It makes more sense now.
And hot damn, 350 nit screen. That's one intense screen.
-
another short video about the Envy 14 and 17 from a Chinese website.
Not sure if it's been posted before, but here you go:
HP Envy 17 and HP Envy 14 - ?? - ???? - ???? -
i wonder how badly paid the workers in china are to keep the price down to like $999 for a company's "premium" product; that, or the corners that HP cut behind the covers. i don't hate hp, but after so many consumer grade machines from them, none of them have been able to satisfy quality over 1.5 years of use. no doubt, i think everyone would say it runs cool and quiet initially, but 6 months down the road, i think we'll be seeing how many ppl are saying the aluminum is burning them too. just advising some caution and don't get sucked into a 'perfect laptop for a steal price'...no such thing...the cost always would have to come somewhere.
-
because E2E screen, that glass weight a lot
-
not sure if this has been posted - but this page has another short video of the envy 14.

I've been lurking the Asus ul30jt topic for MONTHS, finally i signed up and think the Envy 14 will be my next laptop....
anyways, how do you find bing cash back whenthey have those HP offers?
If I can get bing cash back with one of those promotions people claim they have every 3 months, I will more than likely buy this laptop.
How do I find those Bing promotions? -
Never a garuntee.

Hi Guys:
Considering the inflated figures that most manufacturers give estimated battery life, what do you think will be a realistic figure for the Envy 14 w/WIFI, web surfing and office applications? The Envy 14 looks like a very versatile machine. It doesn't appear too heavy or too small. Coming from a VAIO SZ that couldn't even last 1.15 hours using DOSBOX & Firefox, getting around 3 hours would be godsend.
Thanks,
C. -
@claudehl
I'd say with normal usage probably at least 4 hours -
The 1600x900 screen will not be standard, it will be a $100 premium, just like it was on the Envy 13. There's no way it's standard. It will come with a standard 1366x768 screen.
I'm kind of iffy on the GPU, I would say 50/50 on the 5650 being standard. I would sure hope so but...
7200rpm HDD for sure, probably 320gb.
430m CPU standard.
Not bad really. Just hope the backlit/wifi and all that will be standard, which I'm pretty sure they will be. It's the Envy line, so it has to have a minimum standard of features. -
Display latch?
-
Capt'n Corrupt Notebook Evangelist
I agree re: the 1600x900 screen being an upgrade.
The gentleman in the video mentioned that the ATI video card would be standard on the base model. I'm pretty sure the backlit keyboard and wifi (I would be surprised if this wasn't) will be standard as well.
}:^)~ -
Can the envy 14 support 2*1.8 inch drives?
-
That was my original thought but take a look at this:
http://www.hp.com/united-states/personal_again/datasheets/envy14_17_ds.pdf?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
There is no other option for the screen. -
The e2e glass also contributes to the weight.
-
The more I read the more I can't wait for initial reviews!
-
I don't see how the 17 can be considered a replacement for the Envy 15. I do think they should refresh the 15 with at least a backlit keyboard and maybe switchable graphics. Personally i wouldnt mind the extra weight if the laptop had improved battery life, edge to edge glass, and built in optical.
-
Likewise. I'm thinking it's gonna replace my MBP more and more every day. Just wanna see the battery life.
As far as that thing in the front being a lid latch, that makes sense -- but a latch on this kind of machine? Geez, I hope not. -
You'll probably get anywhere from 5-6 hours on light web browsing and using office applications.
And the 1600 by 900 is likely to be standard, I haven't seen any indications of a 1366 by 768 base model. I don't think it exists. Backlit keyboard is definitely standard.
