Whoa, this thing is huge and ugly!Even the screenshots on engadget show poor seams, cheap material und poorly fitted touchpad buttons: ASUS ROG G53 at Computex 2010 - Engadget Galleries
This may be a gamer laptop with power and perfect cooling, but this is no match for the Envy 14 in terms of style.

but I don't care about looks.
I care about it working right and being >> 1336x768 and having switchable graphics.
edit: oh and that switchable graphics being geforce 360+ levels or radeon 5650+ levels. -
I don't want to hijack this thread anymore than I already have but ... to answer your question, the only TimelineXs that you are likely to see in the US in the near term with a discrete GPU are the 4820TG and the 5820TG. There may be a 3820TG going to Canada but none to the states. If you can live with integrated alone, there will be a 3820T in the hands of retailers soon. The Timelines have been out for quite awhile and it looks like their battery times are decent. 6-7 on integrated. 7-8 idle and 3-4 with dedicated GPU on. All around the build quality looks ok. Display is average and keyboard is iffy.
The Envy looks like a serious 10 at low draw with the slice. 4-5 under heavy draw with the slice would be my guess. We'll find out in a few weeks.
The JT, with its I5-520UM will likely get 8-10 low draw and 5-6 under stress. ALthough the 310M in the JT is nothing to write home about, you don't seem to need a lot of GPU power. The problem is that we have no idea when we will see these.
The Envy at least has a real release date. The Acers will be in stores soon probably but not the 3820TG until Q3.
Good luck.

Yes, it is real disheartening to see that kind of workmanship for that price. The HDX line, which the Envy sort of replaces, was up to snuff. I have an HDX Dragon 20" that looks and runs as well as the day I got it. No flaws in workmanship.
Sad really. Especially considering that the Envy line is supposed to be a MacBook competitor. -
Does anyone know if asus has given a release date for the G53? I was interested in the G73 before, but deemed it to be overkill, especially with its poor battery life.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
augustish apparently.
-
Dammit. I've been trying to get in contact with AMEX's warranty dept. Long hold time. Waited 30 minutes so far.
-
Well that sucks. I don't think that I can use this netbook for very much longer without going insane. I might just suck it up and pay for a refurb MBP.
-
What time zone is that turtle in?
-
ughh im praying nothing is wrong with this laptop. :/
-
PST. In less than 7 hours, it's 8 days left.
-
From the Envy 17 page (Quoted Kiwi_style):
EDIT: I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that the Envy 14 will have received more attention to such finer details. It's just over a week until launch time. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
wow.
that sounds like a full blown design flaw, not a QC issue.
well damn. hope they did pay more attention to the 14 -
In the least, it's nice to see HP is acknowledging it, assuming Kiwi's story is true for countries other than just NZ. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yup it is.
-
For HP's sake, it would make sense to monitor their other product lines and learn, especially another Envy. Tick Tock... a little over a week, then what? Can we order it online, buy it in stores? Either way I'm holding out for a great coupon deal or Bing Cashback.
-
Same, though if the coupon/BCB promotion is available right on release day, I'm stuck with shipping it to my current address and paying someone to ship it over to my new addy. -
This thread probably isn't the best place to ask... but how do BCB and coupons stack (or do they?)? And is BCB reliable?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
they don't stack.
it's one or the other -
I've never had to do it, but I've heard of people getting PO boxes near where they're moving (assuming you're not moving out of the US)
PS. My rabbit is ahead of your turtle
EDIT: Anyone know if you can ship envy14-sized packages to PO boxes? -
I screwed a transation once because I didn't have cookies enabled. Bing would have fixed the transaction if I got them certain information in a PDF but it wasn't enough to bother with. That's the only problem I've had with it.

@Zeth006 If you live in the states, there are UPS stores that will hold your package until you pick it up, -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah. I'd do BCB with IE. no telling how a mixture of adblock, noscript, and firefox in general would react
-
Awesomeness! Does HP use mostly UPS? I'm guessing FedEx does the same?
EDIT: Anyone know the procedure for having FedEx or UPS hold boxes? Do I need to ask HP and/or UPS/FedEx to ship and hold the boxes at a specific store? I'll have to pick one that's close to my school as I plan to live within a 10-15 minute commute. Wish I knew where I was living already!
EDIT2: Got it: http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/shipping/time/service/value_added/hold_pickup.html
Do I need to enter the customer center's shipping address when I order via HP's website???? -
It looks like something that has to be indicated by the shipper- I'd contact HP
Also- contacting UPS to see if you can have the package sent there with your name on it might not be a bad idea -
@Ademmer or any other german with an Envy preorder:
Can you reconfirm the ETA from your HP.de product tracking page?
Mine shows "nachbestellt ETA:28/06/2010". The Mail I got promises about one to two days shipping. -
Only eight days left!!!!!
Do we really have to wait that long to see what we get for $999. Sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to me.
Anyone here getting the accidental protection warranty?? I think I will, hopefully its not a waste. -
I would call HP first about that and tell them you're shipping to a UPS store for pickup. I'm sure they're dealt with this before. I only knew about the stores, I've never used them.
-
Check if there's a UPS store in the area you're moving to. They offer an actual mailing address instead of a PO box to deliver to. They accept any package deliveries. It shouldn't cost much for a month of service, and save you the hassle.
Regarding BCB, I've only used it a few times, but worked without a problem. Just make sure you have that click through window that pops up where you have to enter your Bing Cashback username and password. Best to use the same username and password at the site you're ordering from too, makes it easier for them to track and resolve any issues.
I am crossing my fingers so hard for 25% BCB I hope they don't fall off.
-
I'd trade the BCB for consistently high quality/well made units, personally...
-
Then buy the MBP. I agree they should be consistently high quality, but BCB has nothing to do with that. It's a third party discount. Not like HP is offering discounts to move crappy builds. BCB is a site wide discount offered by Microsoft. Again, build quality is unknown until people actually get their hands on them.
-
My HP store status sais "nachbestellt" ("reordered") and ETA is 28th of june (at HP store), too. Also, the notification email I got prospected 1-2 days delivery time until the machine arrives at my home, delivered by UPS.
-
Not with that kind of markup and that lack of features...I was just saying that I'd be willing to pay full price for a fully intact Envy 14.
Also, anyone notice that the thread title is HP Envy 14: Availabilty, etc.? -
Gotcha. We all know the release date, we're all talking etc...
-
Yep. That, and I created this thread on March 30th -- when we had some inclination that there was an Envy 14 coming, but we didn't know a thing about it.
-
Warranties are like making a bet with HP.
E.G. I bet you that I will break my computer somehow. If I win you fix it, if you win you get $300.
This also applies to insurance. E.G. "I bet you $xxx a month that IM GOING TO DIE SOON. If I win I get $1,000,000, if you win you get to keep the cash!" -
With an HP laptop, you have the better odds.

This thread, and many like it have been incredibly educational for me. There's been a lot of intense debate, a lot of humor, and a lot of opinions. But overall it's been very good to just read through the pages and pages because it has taught me a lot about the different laptops companies, their business philosophies, and how those play out in their products.
I've been waiting for a new laptop for at least 2 years. I have an old 17" Sony VAIO K series with a Pentium 4. A few years back, I dropped it and it hit my chair perfectly and broke the LCD screen. I didn't feel like paying for a new screen so I just hooked it up to an external monitor and kept running it until its wireless card burned out. Still runs more or less.
I have been waiting for the new Asus N82JV since January, still not sure when they will actually release it stateside. The Official Waiting Thread has been around much longer than this thread, but it's not quite as talkative. Mostly because of the poor screen quality and the lack of an official date. And the questions about Optimus driver issues. There's a bunch of very unhappy folks over there loitering as their hopes die slowly.
If there's one thing I'm really excited about it's the opportunity to learn presented on this forum. Perhaps the most interesting thing I've learned is that Visa Signature cars offer the opportunity to purchase extended warranties.
As far as I can deduce, you can, using a Visa Signature Card, purchase a 3 year warranty on a computer product that cost between $1,201.00 and $2,000.99 for $114.99 or a 4 year warranty for $178.99.
Warranty Manager Service | Visa Signature
Now this kind of information (Along with AMEX warranty options), combined with knowledge of the different laptop brands, their strengths and weaknesses, and a general knowledge of the product lines has helped me better grasp available options.
So even if the Envy 14 is a complete bust, I am better informed and prepared to be able to move on to the next available option. If necessary I'll pop on over to the folks who live in the Toughbook threads to get a more solid feel for which laptops truly are worth investing in. Those fellows seem to be the ones to talk to as far as getting a real feel for the build quality of different brands.
I want to spend the necessary money to get a laptop that will offer solid performance and reliability for the next 3-5 years. And this thread, the people in it, and the folks at NBR have given me excellent tools to be able to make that happen.
The best lesson I've learned? I can sum it up in two sayings: "Cheap is expensive" or "You get what you pay for or you pay for what you get." -
I didn't qualify for a VISA signature. Ended up with AMEX.
-
I cringed a bit when I noticed, but kept silent
-
Well im definitely going to get the accidental warranty for at least two years. Three sounds interesting but i dont know if im going to drop that much cash. Plus in two years, im VERY sure its going to be another notebook that im drooling over
-
If anyone wants to see how the Envy 14 and other new HP models look in the hands of sexy asian models, look no further:
