HP Envy 14, Envy 17 Hands-on: MacBook Pro Wannabes No More
EDIT:
Unrelated, but This picture makes all my worries of the screen blocking the vent vanish.

8 more days~. Im not sure if want to order it or wait for reviews.
-
Whoa, it's a bunny now??? That rabbit better get to the finish line in no time!
By the way, the slice is $75 (referring to other Envy's customizations).
And inside the box when you order one, don't you receive the Envy in a nice HP sleeve?
EDIT: WAIT A MINUTE. YOU'RE NOT ZETH.. THAT TICKERS A LIE!
Nah, it was my mistake. -
Here when ya need me.
-
I assumed it didn't come with a sleeve because the other HPs I've customized had sleeve as an option you had to check (unless you started with the recommended config)
I made a rabbit one to compete with zeth's turtle
hopefully the competition will give one incentive to speed ahead
(mine is the same as his except for time zone -I'm CST, he's three hours behind me)
EDIT: I forgot to ask- Does anyone know the mAh (capacity) of the 14's internal battery and slice? I looked a bit but couldn't find it -
Thank you for being here man.
Heh, I'm PDT.
If you take a look at Envy unboxing videos, you will see every Envy laptop sliding out of a nice HP laptop condom. Yeah thats the sleeve. I guess since it's "premium" they should include it with your purchase. -
On which side is the optical drive ?
I thought it was on the left, so vent would be on the right and burning your hand if you use a mouse...
But then I found this picture in an envy 14 article. http://www.notebooks.com/2010/05/04/hp-envy-14-style-and-power-starting-at-999-video/
http://www.notebooks.com/2010/05/04/hp-envy-14-style-and-power-starting-at-999-video/
Also that thing on the rear of the envy may not be a vent but just a subwoofer... As the front similar vent like holes are the high pitch speakers. -
This?
it's $23.45 after student savings
It's on the left in every picture and video I've seen... except for that one. I'm guessing the image's been flipped
EDIT: I SEE A NUMPAD
grrrr... I hate how many of the other envys have gotten mixed in with the 14's pics -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah it looks like the vent's on the left not the right.
-
It's the 17
it's somewhat visible in that picture, obvious in the full sized one.
There's an off center touchpad and it has a numpad.
Here's an image for comparison. -
False, who uses their laptop at a straight 90 degree angle?
open that bad boy up some more and it becomes an issue. -
It looks like there's enough of a gap for air to pass through. This thread made it sound like the screen would be entirely covering the vent
-
One of the main complaints about the Envy 15 was that you could not push the LCD back very far, no further than about 115 degrees or so. That's okay if you're on a desk but if you're using it on your lap it made it quite difficult to view the screen. Perhaps thats one of their mechanisms to prevent the screen from blocking the vent, preventing us from bending the screen back too far. Either way it stinks.
-
From the voodoo dev hp blog. Kind of weird.
And Imo the back grid is a subwoofer. On the review video in wich the hp dev is all on emphasis on "NEW VENT HOLES SEE LOOK" underneath the laptop he doesn't even show that back grid (or he forgot it). And on nearly every laptop with subwoofer system the sw hole is on the underneath. On the envy 14 underside, in the same vid, I see nothing that looks like an usual subwoofer opening. On the new envy line the tilt of the screen is greater than on the older ones. -
Everybody screams and cries and throws everything out of proportion.
Imagine you got your laptop and theres a small nick at the bottom right (barely noticeable unless you look straight at it). People will take a picture, zoom/put the lens directly on it.
and say "UNACCEPTABLE IM RETURNING THIS". Make it look worse then it is. -
Oh you're talking about that..
I was just referring to this: http://www.notebooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/HP-Envy-15-3.jpg
Its just like a piece of cloth. But my mistake, yes you must buy that sleeve separately. -
Hmm...
I can't find any indication that it comes with a sleeve, nor any indication it comes with an AC adapter/charger (which I know they wouldn't leave out)
I'm looking at the 15's page
Also, I found something that may be useful to people who can figure out what product codes mean: link -
It will include one, guaranteed. And why would they not include the charger?

Has anyone checked out this hp sleeve before: HP 14.5" Notebook Sleeve, link Pattern | HP® Official Store
How's the quality?
Was thinking of using my $25 delay coupon towards it. -
I think those codes are just like the configurable options or something of the sorts. i could be wrong but thats my guess.
-
"We're sorry, the page requested was not found."
EDIT: Googled it, has a nice pattern. About the quality.. idunno. Looks nice. -
Link works fine for me.
-
Which web browser are you using? I use Chrome. I visited one other link from HP.com and it said that my browser is not compatible to view this and blah blah blah.
-
Firefox. You're right, though. It's broken in Chrome. However, if the link is pasted into Chrome, it renders just fine. More bugs yet to be worked out, methinks.
-
Yeah thats what I did to the other link.
Works fine.
-
I was just saying that I couldn't find a list of default included accessories
-
Man o Man. I hope that the screen can bend all the way back, because that would suck to use in the lecture halls.
Also, ENVY 14: ODD on left, vent on right side. But what about the underside? Does anyone have pix of the bottom? Kinda wanna know if there's any vents, cuz the slice battery would just block up everything. -
that's really odd... dragging the link onto the omnibar loads it perfectly
-
There's a video on youtube in which they describe how the vents line up with vents built into the slice.
the only thing I don't like about the bottom vents is that I'll need something like a lapdesk to be able to use it on anything not flat -
Thanks! That's reassuring. I wont be using this on my lap ever, because I have to make babies one day (I've been weary of this ever since I heard about it on the news like 6years ago).
On the other hand, your response attracts me even further to the ENVY's slice battery, now that I know that it won't interfere with airflow. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
*wonders how a notebook on one's lap can stop ya from making babies*
sure it may get kinda hot but damn...I usually have it on my thigh more than my lap (though I sit cross legged a lot) -
Cool! Found a vid that shows the vents, and the man explains that the vent on the back is an exhaust and the side one too. Also, there are vent holes on the bottom. Very typical of HP though, to make small vent holes. But very new of HP to make the side and back vents. I'm still worried about the cooling system on this notebook though, because it does house a 5650 and an i5 or i7 cpu. Hopefully either a Thermaltake Massive23 or a room fan will keep it cool though

so it's got two exhausts.
man. my mouse hand is gonna sweat so bad. -
Women can use the "frying eggs" cliche
The rear grate does appear to be exhaust. watch the last minute of this:

EDIT: dookie11 beat me to it
I forgot to refresh to page before I posted
I was unable to find the video where they talked about the slice having venting, but I'll keep looking. I don't have it in my internet history as I saw it on my ipod touch -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
dun worry about it.
It'd be completely foolish of them not to have vents on the slice somewhere somehow -
Yay!
Found here
The older ones didn't have venting. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
o.
well... -
Ya, I've been looking for the slice vent video. Thanks for your persistence and patience though (even though I did not put a written request for a link). I really appreciate your help though
And yes, I beecha
Woohoo yay HP for finally making a machine to replace my Dv2610us! woohoo -
I didn't find the video, but did you read the quoted text or the article here?
-
Anyone else worried about the quality and consistency of manufacturing of the HP Envy 14 after reading all the review posts of Envy 17 buyers in the owner's lounge?
I'm scared.
-
We've been discussing it for days on end.
-
There is a 21 day no cost return policy. Why would you be scared. HP is giving you a free test of its new notebook.
-
From what we've seen in the Envy 17, this is not exactly reassuring....
-
How did I miss the part about how this laptop has switchable graphics? That's where the 7 hour battery figure comes from in the first intro video, I guess.
It's around the one minute mark. YouTube - HP ENVY 14 and ENVY 17 hands-on
I wonder what this thing will be able to do with the slice on idle. -
edit* some1 beat me to it. Like a whole page ago! lol...
but yea Bronsky is right, there's a 3 WEEK return policy. If something seems wrong, return it. No loss! -
Ah sorry this thread has ballooned since i started reading it so I haven't been keeping up with the discussions. I worry because I pretty much have one chance to "get it right" in terms of the computer I buy. I need my laptop for school, so assuming the laptop doesn't even ship until a month after the order date, if I have to go through the whole return or exchange process, I doubt I'll have the laptop in timeBronsky said: ↑There is a 21 day no cost return policy. Am I the only one who thinks the left and right sides should be reversed, with regards to the ODD and IO?
-
Not sure if this is what you mean, but that 21 day period doesn't start when you place the order online. At the earliest it would start when they ship it out to you.desklamp said: ↑Ah sorry this thread has ballooned since i started reading it so I haven't been keeping up with the discussions. But that makes me think.... should our next topic of conversation be about backorders? Will this be like the Asus G73's were in february, march, and april?? Should we be staying up till midnight to order? -
Not so new, actually. My dv3t has vents in both the back and side, though they are on the same corner of the laptop (back right), not like the Envy 14's centered back exhaust.dookie11 said: ↑Cool!
