Well, looks like I'll be waiting for BCB to go up again or for a good HP coupon, just wish HP would go ahead and release the US base specs so I can know how much I'm going to spend on upgrades. Really hope I don't have to wait long though, I've been putting off getting a laptop since mid May for the Envy 14. Although after reading the posts about Dolphin and finding some screenshots of F-Zero in HD, I'm pretty excited to get this and use it instead of my Wii/Gamecube. So I guess it isn't all bad news since I'll probably have time to research the processors more/see how it runs on other Envy 14s.
-
Are we sure it will have the 450m base and not the 430m? (I don't know either way, just asking) I'd be happy with a 450m, but not so much a 430m. 430m performs like a 2.7ghx C2Duo, so I'd say the 450m will be like a 2.9ghz C2D, then mayb the 520m would be like a 3.0ghz model. Just guessing.... But wow....only one day left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Is this gonna be available at 12AM Eastern or 12AM Pacific? Ppl keep giving confusing answers.
-
I hope you're right. Cuz I'm planning to go 520 or 540M.
-
Anyone have any suggestions where to pick up a XT drive? Every place I've looked has it on backordered.
=Jason- -
Just guessing lol
but i5 450m standard would probably save me some dough
As for release time I would say midight pacific, as HP is probably a west coast based company (most tech companies are, however I don't know if HP is for fact or not). But remember, nothing is stopping HP from being like 2 or 3 hours off lolololol. -
No one knows. We're just hoping.
-
Less than a day.
I managed to steal someone's wifi here after all
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
the hare returns.
and is already peaking inside the box -
The wait is making my head itch, skin itch, and face become oily and hot. This is too exciting! I've never waited for anything like this before, except for the release of PSP in 2005.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
well the 450m magically appeared on the market recently.
so *shrugs* -
I don't know if that bolded is actually true, but if it was it would be pretty hilarious.
-
ONE day left...just O N E !!!!!!
(This is of course assuming that the ARE releasing it tomorrow midnight). -
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but how is the cooling system in the laptop? Would it be good enough for a few hours of gaming?
-
What about a tray loading blu-ray drive? I really don't like the idea of
slot loading in the first place. Are the two bay specifications incompatible?
Can a tray loading drive be swapped into the Envy 14?
Why would broadband speeds cause people to use their ODDs less?
The two are used for different purposes. ODDs are the primary way
software that you physically buy is read, and is also a convenient way
to create full backups that are never erased. (That's why it's important
that the ODD capacity scale with the HDD capacity, unless you want
a box full of DVDs.)
Yes, you could backup to a another HDD, but I trust the longevity of that
backup less than an optical backup, and since it's a physical HDD, it's not
optimal for a backup kept forever. (Do you want a stack of HDDs with
backups on them.) -
I guess BCB going down to 5-10% isnt really a bad thing for me... Just forces me to wait a lil for the reviews to come in first before pulling the trigger
-
Look at the rise of broadband speeds coinciding with the growing availability of downloadable content. It's becoming increasingly easier to ditch our DVDs via Netflix and other services. More and more content is available for download. Steam these days is extremely popular, and it doesn't help that retail (Read: Excludes online downloads) PC game sales are on a gradual decline. Besides the ever so preponderant DVD as a standard, downloadable content is the other main reason blu-ray has been so sluggish to pick up in terms of adoption rates. It looks as though blu-ray isn't projected to gain the same level of ubiquitousness of its predecessor. Downloadable digital content and cloud computing are the way of the future and will only lead to blu-ray's complete demise in the not so distant future.
As we see more tablets entering the scene in 2011 and beyond, cheaper flash drives and hard disk drives will simply kill off blu-ray. This is not me parroting Steve Jobs' talking points. This is just an inevitable reality.
Sorry, but that's just your own preference. Disk media gets scratched too easily and costs $ just to keep replacing. Even if you use rewritable media, the shelf life of rewriteable disks declines the more media gets written and rewritten onto it. Flash drives and HDDs are dirt cheap and are steadily dropping in price as higher capacity ones go on sale. The rise of the SSD as a replacement to the HDD is inevitable and a trend that is only likely to lead to further price cuts in the hard drive sector. Even though the presence of internet broadband duopolies in America might slow down this trend, it won't be long before the arrival of 4G mobile internet makes the competitive dynamics interesting for home computer internet.
Oh, and I'm still using the same 250gb Maxtor from 2006. If I feel I actually need one, I'll probably pick up a 2TB drive when I go to school. Of course, by the time I graduate, 4TB drives will a fraction of their current price. Damn technology...why you moving so fast?! -
Turtle is getting there...let's see if he lands at the right place and time. If he lands in the wrong area and/or arrives late, that means HP's pushing the date!
-
Soooo when exactly will there be an HP Envy 14 Owners' Thread? I won't be buying until a BCB deal comes out, so I probably won't be offering my input or review vids for a while.
-
Will an hp 3-year warranty be voided by replacing the optical drive with an SSD? If I plan to replace the optical drive in a few months, will buying the warranty be pointless?
-
I don't think they'd be able to even tell if you put the ODD back in.
-
Your being overly dramatic, thats like saying we all have a stack of ide hard drives with old backups on them.
With time newer hard drive technology becomes available which also usually means more space so we transfer our old backups to these newer hard drives.
The other poster was correct in stating that the availability of faster internet connections are making optical drives obsolete. I think the availability and affordability of flash drives are even further hastening their demise.
You might not like it but we're going to be moving on.
Funny thing is i just happened to throw out some old backups that were on dvd-ram disk yesterday. I don't own a drive thats compatible with the format anymore. -
zeth - couldn't agree with you more. I have a blu-ray player at home and even though I still buy physical media, I'm making the push toward digital. I just recently signed up for verizon fios at 15/5mbps speeds so that will make dl and streaming much better.
I don't use cd's anymore, ALL my pc games are on steam except blizzard but there are digital dl options for those..hdd's are so cheap and much faster to copy and back up data. The announcement of the 128gb blu disc was not noteworthy to me. If I got an envy I would love to have two hdd slots over the odd. But its good to have options.
I feel movies are next to go mostly digital, but the gaming (consoles) are keeping physical media relevant as well. -
i wish fios was available here. im stuck with 17/.8 speeds would love a large upload speed for torrents.

Those must be all the possible hardware configurations? Wow...
-
Well, yeah..I don't know, maybe there is a possibility for a stronger GPU upgrade? Dunno..
-
The slot looks like its built into the chassis, no bezel to remove to install a tray-load ODD.
You can usually get a digital copy of a program in addition to an optical media. CD's and DVD's are not more reliable than an HDD, the data on optical media can degrade over the course of time, like in as little as five years, are susceptible to scratches and other environmental affects, not to mention high probability of corrupt data. Plus you can fit over 100 DVD's worth of data on a 500GB drive. I'd rather have a 2.5" external sitting there than a stack of 100 DVD's. Optical media should only be used as a temporary storage solution, not long term. I don't know anyone that uses optical media as their backup solution. I personally use a home server. Cost me $300 for hardware + five 1TB drives I bought over time. Not to mention need for redundancy (backup of a backup) which is managed automatically with Windows Home Server software. -
I highly doubt it. Likely one model per CPU with a 1366x768 screen, then another model for each CPU with the 1600x900 screen. Those are the major components we've confirmed that can be upgraded. Probably some other options in there like quick-ship models or something.
-
Definitely not! These are all supported by HP Live Chat Assistance. Why would you give special/distinguished support for a quick ship model?
-
What would you all do if you were in my position?
I need the laptop in mid July for orientation to load several programs onto. I could possibly stretch the need date to Aug. 10 which is when I move onto campus and just fry my old computer with these programs...
I'm personally not paying for the $999, but I will be paying for any upgrades.
Should I just get it on release day and get the 10% edu discount, plus any coupons hp hopefullyyyy releases? -
if it's anything like the envy 17, which is taking approximately one month to get into the hands of owners, you should receive your envy 14 by early august. if i were you, i would order asap since u apparently need it for school
-
Break out the dremel!
-
Ughhhh BCB at 5% luckily I ordered my Swissgear laptop backpack yesterday with the 25% BCB. Now I just need the laptop to put it in the bag...
-
I'm guess you guys don't feel the same way, but I for one really am glad at the inclusion of an optical drive. Call me oldschool, but I keep a lot of data backed up to DVDs. It's just nice to have the DVD drive on hand and integrated.
-
I could go either way - I'm glad to have it but could do without if it meant they could add a better cooling system and in turn a better video card. I'd love to see a 5850 in there but I doubt it would be a good idea without a major overhaul - the MSI 640 I had sounded like a jet engine and produced massive heat in a 15'' frame : (
-
It's 10%, not 5%, at least if you go to bing.com/cashback and select the HP Direct store.
I like that it's there as well. There's that occasional need for it. Granted you can always use an external if needed. As little as I use my DVD drive though, I would rather the machine get slimmed down a bit more or offer improved cooling with an option for a more powerful GPU. The fact that you can't get a BD in there makes it even less desirable. -
Guys, those are likely for all regions. You've got tx, la, ev, nr, ea, ef...
-
Is this thing coming out tonight when the clock strikes midnight?
-
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
When they released the refresh dv6, dm3, dv5, and dm4 they were up on the website early in the morning of the release date. I don't know about midnight, though.
-
What are some good resellers for this baby in Canada? Am I best off just buying direct from HP, or is it likely to be cheaper (with coupons) somewhere else?
-
Also, you cant use coupons with edu discount i think.
-
Well, the only perk to the Mac is that it runs iTunes w/o bloatware, so for all the hardware flaws you listed and a ridiculous pricetag, it's probobly not worth it.
-
For pre-ordering?
-
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
No there was no pre-ordering. They just appeared on the website on the date they were supposed to be released (19th of June) at around 3AM ET. -
If I remember correctly, they were up around 1:00 a.m. on the release date. The new Envys could be up in less than 24 hours.
Did HP really stop 25% Bing Cash Back the day before the 14 release? Never going to stay ahead of Acer in units sold like that?
Bronsky
-
Considering the E17 build date was two weeks after it was released..I am just going to order tomorrow or whenever it's available with 10% BCB, and hopefully 25% will pop up again in the future and I will order another E14 then return the other one later. I need to test this laptop!
