The UK dell site has been updated, i7 is listed in the description, but no models feature it :S tried to customise one and it didn't give me the option to select an i7, only 2.80ghz/3.06ghz. But yeah, i7 is finally mentioned on the UK site![]()
-
there still seems to be very little info on the 15. everybody is looking at the 13.
-
Yeah I know, I'm from the UK though. Didn't fancy buying from Dell US
Lol, you edited that quick. And I agree, not much Envy 15 coverage yet. -
It is definitely slow compared to better models. But, its still just exponentially better than my old platter. For someone like me who just unloaded some savings on their machine, this made a very affordable alternative.
I am already saving for when the OCZ Agility's come down a little more. I keep telling myself if I can just wait for 6 more months.... I won't regret it.
-
Haha yeah I know the feeling Texas, the kingstons are a hell of a bargain for gb/price ratio though
-
Right.
Read my post and you'll find I said "Kinda like using an SSD for the first time".
I was only comparing the feeling of using something and being accustomed to it
-
How much are the Kingston Vs and what controller do they use? IMO the Samsung 256GB from Dell is the best bang for your buck (if you have the cash though lol) for $480 (plus if you're lucky enough to find a coupon off)...
-
I use the Kingston SSDNow V-series. It uses a newer JMicron controller that doesn't have the stuttering problem anymore, but isn't as fast as some of the Indilinix/Intel drives. Still, much much faster than a platter. For someone's first SSD, it will not disappoint (not to mention, its cheap as heck). Under $300 for the 128GB drive (free shipping right now). I had a % off coupon when I bought mine.
To be honest, I'm waiting for Windows 7 to hit for a few months, and waiting for TRIM support to become more universal/less buggy before I throw anymore money at my SSD situation.
The Samsung's are more expensive than Indilinix drives, but have slower random write speeds. Its only 3x's faster than a 10k platter drive, while Indilinix drives are consistently at least 10x's faster. Also, the Samsung suffers major performance losses as it gets fully written to, making it actually slower than a 10k RPM platter drive. It also lacks TRIM support, instead using the garbage collection system that constantly rewrites to cells which could potentially greatly shorten its lifespan. Samsung drives are rebranded by OCZ as the Summit and Corsair as the P256. I recommend avoiding them and going towards an Indilinix drive like the OCZ Agility until those issues are fixed by Samsung. The 120GB OCZ Agility goes for about $350.
I highly recommend reading this article before buying a SSD. -
I beg to differ
The newer Samsung drives are absolutely fantastic. IOPS may not be as good as the Intel g2's but they are better than the Indilinx drives.
I was on the Samsung sucks bandwagon for a while, but after using an Intel g2, Vertex, and now this PB22-JS3, my opinion has changed. You can read every artical anand or anyone else has written, but until you have them and see for yourself you can't judge - it's impossible.
To me, in real-world usage, the Samsung is every bit as good as the Intel and better than the Vertex. -
Is the samsung also the Corsair P128 and P256? Just rebranded?
-
Yes, the Corsair P series is a re-branded Samsung (PB22-J/PM800).
-
If someone is interested in the DM3. It offers switchable graphics:
"When configured with the AMD Neo and ATI combination, the HP Pavilion dm3 offers PowerXpress, which provides performance graphics when plugged in and switches to shared graphics when unplugged for superb battery life."

Here is the HP Beats site
http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/beats/envy_15.html -
Geez, they are showing all these teaser sites, and no where to even place a pre-order. We do not even have confirmation of what is standard and what isn't. Hurry up HP!
-
If only they offered it in black without the black gloss on there, I'd be much more interested in a model like that.
-
That looks real nice. I would have liked if the put the HP in the middle and the beats logo on the lower left. I think that would have been nicer. Again, I wish there was a configuration page already!
-
$2300 = no thanks.
HP is pricing this thing astronomically
-
Lol more then aw
also black would of been nicer -
Yeah the black makes it look less like a macbook pro wannabe but for that price is better make me breakfast after I fall asleep holding it
-
im going crazy waiting
-
Patience young grasshopper... after all, it is a virtue.
-
I'm so tempted to pull the trigger and buy the studio xps 16...I know I should wait another 2 weeks... is the ENVY release worldwide? Or is end of October for the US only? I'm from the UK btw.
-
Probably us first, but uk not too long after. I think at this point they are really just waiting for windows 7 to launch.
-
If I do get a premium laptop, between XSPS 16, Envy and W860CU, I probably will opt for the Clevo. I like the idea of Envy 15, but its just a touch too niche imo.
-
Never actually owned or handled a clevo before, but from what I hear they're an excellent value for what you get. Still for me that dell warranty sure is tempting. Having a technician come out to your place sure does beat having to ship it. Don't know if HP's got a similar warranty or not, but I'm thinking not.
-
I've never heard of Clevo before, are they a US brand? Basically I'm asking will I get one in the UK?
-
They make barebones, and other brands rename then.
Rock, Sager, AvaDirect, EuroCom, and many others. -
I'll even take it with the floral patter etching, as long as it's in black.
the backlit keyboard thing, for me, works like this; other companies do it for less so on a laptop this expensive, a premium laptop, it's kind of an expected feature, or option at least. -
Found a bit more info off of the hp website.
http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/thinandlight/pdf/envy15_datasheet.pdf
Looks like we just might be getting the slice battery bundled in along with the external optical drive after all. Not to mention a full HD screen standard. -
does look like the slice is included. That is nice.
-
Nice find. Also seems like 6GB of RAM as well
-
so this thing keeps getting more and more kick as time goes on. Maybe we can configure it with some lower end options so we can get it a bit cheaper... still hoping for a black one.
-
Does anyone know if they will be selling them in stores some time around the release date or only online? Im going to be on holiday in the states in a few weeks and I have pretty much decided to buy one (assuming nothing is majorly wrong when the reviews come out)
-
Wouldn't count on having a cheaper price since so far everything seems to indicate that $1799 is pretty set as the starting price.
-
No one else has said anything about the VRAM.
Don't know about you guys but it looks like plane-jane DDR3. If that's the case you can't count me out. -
Well even though HP is charging a lot at least they are including some necessities in the box, and I love their description at the top of the page.
And I thought the chasis was magnesium wrapped in aluminum like the m17x, but it says magnesium wrapped design, so is it an aluminum chasis wrapped in magnesium or just magnesium? -
It's not quite like the m17x from the shots they showed of the chassis build when they first announced them. It's pretty much magnesium with some light layers of aluminum coated on to the exterior. But the main element is magnesium from what I could see.
-
It's carved out of magnesium, coated with aluminum. They've said that in all the hands-on at different sites. I like it.
EDIT: Yes! Comes with battery slice and external drive! Hopefully you can take out the external drive, reduce the starting ram, reduce hard drive size, to reduce the cost. -
I wonder if it's a mislabel. I still have yet to see the same card compared w/ DDR3 and GDDR3, but in theory DDR3 should be near if not equal to GDDR3.
-
What I'm curious about is how it handles the heat. Any heat in the palm rest area and I'm gone. A lot of the HP Pavilion line have palm rest heat issues. That's where most people's hands go to begin with. At least move the heat to the top of the computer.
And I'm hoping for a more subtle design, not some rose carved in. -
im happy the optical drive has 2 usb ports. yea if there are no heat issues then im getting it. the only upgrade i will need will be the SSD. awsome
-
A few websites early on mentioned options for multiple designs when it was announced. I definitely wanted other options too.
-
They're planning on providing a retail presence for the envy's if you listen to his video near the end about the envy 13
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiYz9ZpK4z0 -
the second page of the data sheet says that the extra battery is optional so i guess its not included
-
If I am not mistaken I think that is for an extra standard battery since on the left side of the 2nd page it says "what's in the box: battery slice"
So in conclusion the box only contains the battery slice and no notebook
-
That data sheet looks like a specific retail model number. I suspect it is a model retailing for more than $1799. At $1799 there will probably be fewer options, though potentially the slice could be included as that is included on the 13 model.
-
Not by a long shot!
DDR3 will indeed be 50% slower than GDDR3. -
I dont think that 50% difference, but there will be a drop in performance.
Between DDR2 and GDDR3 the dif is that massive, but DDR3 and GDDR3 shouldnt be that big... -
lol thats all i really wanted anyway
HP Envy 15? i7 meets 4830+15" screen!
