What's wrong with the wireless card version? The only difference I can see is that the 5300 goes up to 450mbps of bandwidth and the 5100 is up to 300mbps. How easy is it to upgrade a laptop wireless card? Are they the same form factor, etc?

I have replaced one with an exact replacement and it was fairly easy

If it doesn't come with a backlit keyboard now, chances are it never will. The 5300 isn't really major and you can upgrade that yourself easily. I'm sure it will eventually be an option though. The switchable graphics has about 0% chance of happening with the current processors though, since Intel doesn't make integrated graphics on it's chipset any more since it's been moved to the CPU. If they offer a lower priced Envy with Arrandale, then it will have switchable graphics, but that's a fairly big trade in terms of CPU power for only decent boost in battery life. ATI's 40nm GPU is fairly power efficient already.

Hmm it seems that none of these "Envy" laptops have internal drives...fail in my opinion.

Sucks too...they look and sound awesome from what I see on HP's website....

Hey do you guys know the return policy for HP? Do they have restocking charges?

Theoretically, if I order this and decide I dont like it, how much would I lose?

I thought you can return without a restocking fee to HP? That's what the first link above indicates, is it not?

It says they don't accept returns for: "Custom configured orders (i.e. Customer specifications, Custom image, asset tagging, etc)"

Does that mean a custom configured computer?

Actually I did earlier. If you check the HP store page and find the return policy page, you have 21 days to return it for a full refund. They even pay return shipping it seems.

This is in reference to the Distance Selling Regulations (or whatever are the equivalent regulations for your country), in which they typically stipulate that returns can be made within a specified time period for a refund, except in the case of personalised items. There is often some "muddiness" around custom built computers. Technically, each component is not custom built for you, but the combination is. I believe the only way to be sure is to speak to someone from HP. The reason I suggest this is that although there are regulations in place, these are a minimum, and many companies offer levels of service above and beyond these regulations.

I was under the impression that the Envy 15 has a backlit keyboard. On the "demo" flash animation under specs, the second picture, it says "Low luminance LED indicators reduce harsh glare" when mousing over and displaying a picture of the keyboard. That seems to me to state that the keys are backlit with a "soft" glow?

I believe this is referring to indicators for things such as lights to tell you the wireless is on. In fact, if you look at this preview video, they specifically mention the LED lights being dimmed down about 1:10 into the video.

So guys sorry if this has been already discussed but just to clarify you cannot use the Academic HP discount in addition to the Bing 25% off deal correct? I read at another site that you can if you're logged in to your APP account and then go to HP through bing but so far the academic prices aren't showing up. Just wanted to confirm whether this is or is not possible before I pull the trigger.

They have said that Bing will not work with EPP or APP. If you do it and it goes through, you're risking your cashback being canceled if they check. Its up to you, but I wouldn't take the risk.

Does anyone else think they may release a Blu-Ray burner instead of just reader in the future for this thing? I'm starting to think I should have skipped the OD and waited until the Blu-Ray burner version is released.

I bought the HP Beats edition with 575$ Bing cash back!

OMG! I never had a laptop before, this will be my first one!

    I have questions tho..

    1) I didn't purchase a waranty, can I purchase it after I get my laptop?

    2) If there is a 40% black friday coupon this year, will I have enough time to return this (21 days) and get it through 40% off?

Can't wait, I will upload pics, and my thoughts of the beats edition of the HP envy!

Just ordered... and realized I forgot to call and see if I can just get one 250gb hard drive instead of X2 for less money (the website is strategically "bugged" to not allow you to pick the smaller drive for less money).

I can't decide if I should bother. The difference in price would be, what, $50? Does anyone know? This is assuming I could get them to put anything other than the 500gb in the thing... Has anybody successfully done so..?

Ah well. Can't have everything. backlit keys would have been nice, but the Core i7, 4830, and the fact that I didn't give a cent to Apple is worth it. pulled the trigger. Hoping for my cashback notification soon. I DID see the "25% cashback" logo when I first got to the page, but then nothing after my order....

Edit: Bought the "standard means top of the line" model
My upgrades = faster 820QM i7 Proc, 6 cell + 9 cell extended battery, External super multi DVD burner. Anyone know if the supermulti (non Blu-Ray ROM) can do lightscribe? I seem to remember it mentioned somewhere.

What the.. You have to add $800 to get a smaller hard drive, etc? I'm guessing they're doing that so they can justify the excessive minimum specs and $1800 price tag.

It would be nice if you could get one configured similarly to the Dell Studio XPS 16, but with the nice video card, for a little more cost.

They are cramming a 45w CPU ( >=QX9300) in a 1" chassis? The 4830 may have lower power requirements, but unless it is 23w or less, that bothers me.

It will be interesting to see how hot this puppy gets. Even thicker, bigger 15.6" laptops get very hot with 45w CPUs inside.

The GPU will most likely be <23W. The given values for the 40nm HD 56xx and HD 57xx series ranges from 15-25W and has almost triple the shaders as the HD 4830, which is also on a 40nm process. The CPU will also be very power efficient, given that on idle, it consumes around the same or less than the current C2Ds. On the go, heat won't be too much of an issue. TDP is a very poor indicator of actual heat.

I don't think there's any issue with that since they're just going to process the order tonight, not start shipping it or anything. It's still only 10:14pm here on the west coast so the deal should still be live like others have said (but it might run out at midnight since no one has been able to confirm for sure if its today only).

Call 888-999-4747 tomorrow starting at 10AM EST to call in and cancel your first order.

If it only works on the first purchase (does it?) you may not get to do it. I really don't know either way, but it seems like the best bet is to call HP and get them to change the order.

Mine won't even ship until oct 28th, so it's not like you have no time.

Do you think they'll downgrade parts? lol, they'll probably be mad and not want to. I just spent to much.

If it only works on the first purchase, I'd be better off to keep the order than to pay full price. Damn, this sucks. I hope I don't lose the cashback.

I don't know if it only applies to the first order. My friend thought he saw that on the website, but I'm not sure if it's true.

At this point though, we're nearing the deadline, so it may not be good to take the risk. Give them a call tomorrow and maybe call Bing also. Because what if HP changes the order, and it somehow messes up the rebate?

What did you want to downgrade?

I don't really get how placing a new order and canceling the old would make my new Bing order invalid, but maybe they only allow one. I just wanted to save some cash and downgrade from 8GB to 6GB and lose the external Blu-Ray drive. I think I'll place another order right now and call to cancel tomorrow. I don't see how it can't work on my second order.

Bing applies to all orders as long as you go through HP's site by searching on Bing. I've bought an item before using bing, canceled, and reordered and I still received cashback for my last order. The original one got canceled.
