Yes, it would.
All new Clarksfield and Arrandales use the same 989 socket.

I already have one small enough to access the DIMM right by the battery. -
How can you overclock the 5830? I can't install the new Catalyst drivers from strags.com and AMD GPU clock tool doesn't work.
-
amd gpu clock tool works with mine.

no issues so far, everything is installing super fast and no heat issues and im looking forward to trying this piece out with some multithread apps. Later tonight for sure. I did a clean install in about 10 minutes, all drivers were installed in no time.
i7-820QM - 4GB 1066MHz - Glossy Screen 1080p - 320gb 7200rpm
Everything is perfect thus far. I'm impressed with the connection speed and efficacy of the 6200N on my school's wireless. My old laptop would constantly drop the connection and wouldn't download at more than 20kB/s usually. I just downloaded an app at 1.0 MB/s which is unheard of on this campus. -

This has probably been asked a million times already but what should I do when I first open the laptop? Should I reinstall windows? How do you get the drivers? Are they all of the drivers that come with the laptop? Any problems associated with this?
-
The gfx chip is a nice upgrade tho and can overclock fairly well. Although the current drivers are holding the performance back a bit.
It does get kind of warm on the bottom and the palm rest but it is considerably cooler and quieter than my bargain-basement Turion laptop that can barely run Aero on the desktop. The hottest item maybe the mechanical HD.
I've ran a couple of virtual machines here and the Heaven Bench and the fan hasn't kicked on. -
The reason why it's so hot on the palm rest is because the CPU is right there.... on the left side, the hard drive(s) are on the right.

I was wondering the same thing about whether 6GB could run in dual channel. Turns out, you can run 2GB + 1GB in Channel 1 and 2GB + 1GB in Channel 2, and that can run in dual channel mode.
You can't have 2GB + 2GB in channel 1 and 1GB + 1GB in channel 2, however, and have that run in dual channel mode (AFAIK - someone correct me if I'm wrong). As long as the memory is in the correct locations, you are fine. -
I got AMD GPU clock tool working.
Hit 550 core and 1075 stable. -
Looks like most people are getting some nice overclocks.

Came home early to make sure no one stole my laptop since it was left outside. Opening now.

I was playing borderlands last night for about 3-4 hours at full settings, it ran so smooth, graphics were outstanding, and at 1080p I thought my eyes were going to start bleeding with the pure pleasure of seeing it. I m glad I bought this laptop, and really would recommend it for those gamers out there that dont really care about battery life. Its a mobile gaming rig, not a laptop (get a netbook if you want more battery life

Odd - I turned off (under the power management setting) the auto-dimming/brightening feature but ever once in a while my screen is flickering from maximum brightness (the setting i have it on by default) to a level or two below that...then it immediately adjusts back to full brightness...has anyone else experienced this? Do you need to turn the auto-dimming feature off in more than one spot???

Mine does that too, only when I'm idling though.

I was wondering if there is a way to do dynamic frequency scaling to extend battery life.
Basically this is the exact opposite to Intel Turbo Boost. When the CPU is not needed, its frequency should be reduce to decrease power consumption.
ASUS has always been providing such software (Power4gear) with their laptop. Does it exist similar one for HP (Envy) ?
Thanks -
did anyone else get some scratches on the bezel? my computer arrived with only a black paper thing on the keyboard and nothing really protecting the screen/bezel. is that how all of your arrived? i'm not sure what i should do, i shouldn't have scratches on the bezel or anything.
also for those with a raid, is there an aeasy way to identify which ssd's I got without breaking the raid? -
I bet the i5 being lower TDP allows for more available juice to the 5830 core. mine wont complete any 3d test above 548mhz. Could just be a higher better yield on your pieve however. anyways... AWESOME -
Have you found any sensors for the memory temp?
Also I'm curious if you have any settings for CCC 3D that make a big difference for the benchmarks? Ran this test in max performance on all except disabled catalyst a.i. I'm not a gamer but want to see what this thing is capable of
Using CCC 9.11 & 8.681 -
Great, used that retarded revo uninstaller to delete files after removing one of those HP media smart programs and it deleted a bunch of unrelated files so now I can't even restore. I have to wait for my 8GB flash drive to be delivered before I'll be able to do a full format and install.
EDIT: It's a good thing I ignored the first line in the uninstalling bloatware guide telling me to create a restore point first. lol -
Is there really a need to separate the raid0 if you have a good backup?

hey all, been considering this laptop for a while, just got to play with it in the store today; quite liked it. one thing though.. it was a 1st gen envy15. where can i find a list of the differences (outside-wise, forget the inside components) between 1st and 2nd gen envy. ie keyboard, palmrest, outside, screen, general feel etc?
i guess the reason is that i can evaluate components online, but the feel/physical part of the laptop is something i have to see/feel for myself
thanks! -
Initial impressions of the 1080p matte screen are good. Decent brightness, and contrast. Good color, not over saturated but not washed out. Definitely needs to be calibrated though.
I'm surprised to hear people say the keyboard feels cheap. It defintely has a light touch but I like it. Feels better the a Macbook circa 2006. -
okay, i got mine: i5 520M/4GB/500 7200RPM/1920x1080 matte.
1. overall design is okay. soild built.
2. the screen looks great. I lowered brightness to half. Found nothing abnormal with the color.
3. keyboard is good. but i found it maybe hard to clean them since each key takes one place.
3. touchpad sucks. At least it takes time to get used to it. When you want to do right click, the cursor easily drifts.
4. the screen could not go further than 100 degree. You can still read the screen. However, sometimes, you will not feel comfortable about this.
5. I put the laptop on my knees, and played video/music for half an hour. Could feel one hot spot beneath the laptop. This could be a problem in hot summer. However, other places stay very cool.
6. fan is always on, can be easily heard under quite enviroment. -
you can set the fans to turn off when not needed in the BIOS. Some people prefer to have a constant fan noise isntead of the sound of fans off and then on and off again.
-
can someone upload the driver for the video card plz?

Just got my Envy, can anybody tell me how to check if the SSDs are G2s?
-
Intel Matrix Storage manager

Yes

awesome, so I did end up with G2's like everyone else.
when you guys did fresh install did you just format the C: drive and leave the recovery partition and HP TOOLS paritions? I assume yes, but figured I'd ask. -
Doesn't seem to be one that I can see in SWsetup but I hate the mysterious titles they give everything...... -
So, the keys above my M and N key don't work. On top of this the bottom of the bezel wasn't even connected to the back of the lid. I got it and kinda press it until it snapped together, but now there's a 1-2mm gap all around between the bezel and the screen. The bottom near the screw holes was also scratched, as well as the bezel. I sent my envy back to HP today as a return... Gotta wait another 3-4 weeks for a new one

I have a question: every time I hibernate or put to sleep the laptop, when I restart it (open the lid), the brightness is set to ~25%, and there is no way to change it. The only solution is to restart the laptop.
Anybody with this problem? With a solution? -
What started me looking at this is it appears my drive is is filling up yet I have not laoded anything lager than some benchmark programs. Was just trying to figure out how big win7 pro is?? The old recovery partition was only 12GB. I'm showuing 40GB of used space and cannot figure out what it all is, not even close to that?? wondering how much is reserved by default for restore points an virtual mem etc. Any ideas?
I have 0 apps, media or data of my own loaded, just win7 pro, 3 futuremark apps and whatever updates MS installed. I am beginning to wonder if running all the benchmarks might be reading garbage files as stored data on the SSD's. -
I just reformatted and installed all the drivers, but I can't tell if BT is disabled or not. I see the icon in the taskbar and I unchecked all the options to not allow connections but I'm still not sure. Can someone provide the folder name of the HP manager that controls wireless and bluetooth? And which HP program controls the volume action showing up on the screen?
Thanks for the help.
I must've not installed the BT driver correctly or had a messed up. I reinstalled with the one provided in sleepy0's link and now I can turn BT off.
