I'll have to keep an eye out during my 21 day eval...I only used the student discount so I saved about $160, compared to not using any discount at all but $350 discount wouldve been way sweeter, but it is less appealing now that the price has gone up $100

I wonder why so many people are concerned about USB 3.0? By the time there are devices you can afford that take advantage of USB3.0, i'm sure you will have a new laptop by then (3-5 years). Even then you would need a super fast SSD internally to be able to handle the speed if you are copying something. You can just use gigabit ethernet and that would saturate your hdd as well unless you are running SSD's on your server or desktop as well. If so, I guess you guys are super rich
.
Interface makers will not jump on USB3 until intel gives it to the mass market by way of chipset anyways. By the time that happens, I think it would be time for a new laptop. -
I'd rather have an Intel USB solution than a 3rd party like NEC anyways, so USB 3.0 doesn't mean as much to me as most people around here.
-
Its funny that you mention that. NEC is actually on the forefront of USB development. They are the ones that come out with the chips first in my experience (worked at a company that considered using their IP). NEC's USB controllers are top notch and can tolerate a wide range of USB devices. I would not be surprised if intel collaborates with NEC to make the controllers together. The only issue is power draw is not good for a laptop with the extra chip onboard.
If I was to buy a USB3.0 pcie controller card, NEC would be on top of my list if price was not a concern. -
hi all, sorry for my english but i'm italian, are undecided whether to buy an ASUS G71GX-RX05 (P8700 CPU + 260M + 6GB RAM) or a HP ENVY 15 (CPU i5 + HD5830 + 4GB RAM), what is the best for GAMING?
-
USB is used for everything. USB 3.0 now exists. When HP mentioned not available for Core i5 ENVY's is confusing and i hate it when this happens to a product i want.
-
I think it's too early to tell. No one has an i5 Envy yet. Give it a week and we should have a good idea.
-
Could you post or PM me a link to the coupon you used. When I reordered today I was told the coupon I had had expired and he was only willing to give me $200 off. If I have a link I can probably get them to credit me the other $100. A penny saver is always welcome
Thanks -
I believe the coupon code is expired, which is why I jumped when a second one became available. These codes expired by usage (1700) rather than by date.
I used www.dealnews.com to monitor specials. -
Re: USB3. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but the Envy 15 maintenance manual published in Sept/09 lists USB3 as a configuration option, as 2xUSB3 + 1 USB2/eSATA combo.
-
wow, I just got off the phone with tech support, trying to confirm switchable graphics, and the guy said Envy 15s have switchable graphics according to his test model. Problem was, his test model didn't have an i5 processor, it was i7. When I told him this was impossible, he hung up on me.
EDIT:
I called back, and the guy had a hard time understanding what HP Envy 15 meant. GREAAATTTT. Tech support fails pretty hard. -
It would be possible for an i7 to have switchable graphics if it was the i7 620M. Maybe he thought you were referring to the Envy 13, which clearly does have switchable graphics.
-
He said his model was a few months old, so it couldn't have been the 620m
-
The 620M was available to HP "a few months ago". Just not available for retail or OEM sale. (i.e.: We could only dream of touching one, but HP had them.)
Please don't be so quick to belittle their tech support department when you're unsure of miscommunication. A lot of times, tech support workers have to dumb themselves down anyway. They're only allowed to help you with certain things, even though they know more.
Bottom line: We won't know what models have which features until people start getting them. The first batch of 2nd-gen Envy 15's were set to ship out yesterday, which means we'll probably know this week. -
I don't like to belittle ppl but HP really does need to get their ducks in a row. They seem completely clueless sometimes. In my case I "HAD" an Envy LE on order then I was told by both a sales person and when I dbl checked that salesperson called TS and came back swearing the LE had not been upgraded to USB 3.0 and convince me to cancel and replace the order for the regular Envy 15. Then yesterday someone here got their LE and surprise surprise it was updated to have USB 3.0. Needless to say it means mine order is going to be delayed even longer now all because they don't know whats what.
-
I'd say given their track record, the tech support department has no idea what they're talking about. One even told me that absolutely no HP Envy 15 models have USB 3.0 ports at the moment. Somebody on this forum already has an Envy 15 with USB 3.0. They obviously don't know what they're talking about.
-
Exactly!!! I was really hoping for them to be a bit more informed. It's not inspiring confidence with them. Sure hope I have no problems with my unit that I can't solve myself
-
With all due respect, this is what happens when people have no patience. The more times you call, the greater the chance to be told something you don't want to hear--so you can go babble about it on an Internet forum.
Just be patient! -
No disrespect taken but when your dealing with an item running this much money, reputable and reliable information is only proper and to be expected. We're not talking about some small gadget here where support isn't such a big issue.
-
"This much money" is a relative term, especially when HP is the largest pc manufacturer in the world.
-
This shouldn't be an issue :/ It should be that the more times you call, the more times the same information is reconfirmed.
-
Considering the Envy is one of their premium lines, it's something they should probably pay more attention to than most other models.
-
Well I checked my account to see if my laptop shipped since I didn't receive an e-mail yet. Nothing shipped yet, I'm getting it shipped to my parents house 2.5 hours away and I was planning on visiting them this weekend and picking it up. I got an e-mail that HP canceled my bing discount. It's expected since I used a coupon, but it still sucks, especially with them releasing a coupon later with a bigger discount.
-
My point exactly, As soon as the question is asked it seems like it would behoove them to say "Oh we're gonna get this question a lot lets get a definitive answer" and research so they can answer informatively
Agreed, its not a "cheap" item for most people so an expectation of quality support isn't that unreasonable. -
Mine is shipping on 1/2....then once my friend receive it he will sent it to Vietnam through airmail for me,kind of a long procedure..
-
Straight question, switchable fully working on i5?
Yes or No? -
I'll tell you when I get it
90% that you can.
Switchable Graphics on i5
Yes --|---------------- No -
90%? How is that? It works?
-
Nobody has one yet, so nobody knows. But it's really freakin' unlikely that it won't switch.
-
Well, no official word from HP, so I can't tell you anything about the switchable graphics with 100% certainty.
The dv4i which has an i5 + ATI 4000 series GPU has switchable graphics, so you can assume that the Envy 15 will have switchable graphics as soon as ATI releases a switchable graphics supported driver for the 5000 series. -
Nobody has received theirs yet?
-
Mine was delayed until 1/30....
-
Ouch...well, the wait is probably worth it for you, as it was it for me...
-
I think it's ridiculous but whatever....
-
Mine was supposed to ship on the 19th but I still haven't received any notification from HP about a delay; expecting it anytime today though. I really hope that they will ship the units out before the 30th because having no laptop for a whole month is quite dreadful, especially at the beginning of the semster
-
Mine was supposed to ship on the 18th, but I got the email at about 5pm EST the next day about the delay.
I know what you mean about not having a laptop, but for me, I haven't had a laptop for this entire school year :O
I had some issues with my Toshiba Qosmio, and ended up with a bunch of money back and no working laptop (they couldn't fix it for beans :[ )
That was back in October, so I'm really hoping my laptop will come soon :O -
Why is it that HP just clear this up like apple does when they release new products?(things like switchable graphics, usb 3.0)
Not hating on HP, I'm an ex-apple user and switching to envy soon
Btw, is there any coupons or will there be any coupons? -
Chill people, the Envy shall come. At least for me the 2 month wait to finally get it, was totally worth it. I fell in love immediately, then hated it, cleaned it, and now I love it again. Totally worth the wait and the bucks.
-
Yes but, any discount codesA?
-
Pretty sure that one's used up.
-
Exactly
There are no valid coupons right now, maybe the person that wanted the coupon may try to talk to a sales agent, but as far as I know *currently there are no valid coupons for the Envy* -
Well, I am not waiting 2 months.
By then, the new Sony Z will be out
-
If mine gets delayed to oblivion I might be forced to pick up something locally since school isn't exactly slowing down. The sony z looks pretty crazy though and im sure verry pricey with what's its running.
-
Wow you sound Tsundere...... You probably don't know what they means either.....
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Tsundere -
Serg lives in France, but ordered it through someone in the US, so the reason for the delay was not HP. Although of course they probably took up a fair proportion of that time.
-
Yes, as Fragilexx says, I had someone to get it to me. In fact HP delivered when they said they would, right on time. Nice day it was...I got to see my Envy via Skype and kist wish for it to arrive...
If HP delays too much your shipment, they can throw in discounts, as some people got the first time. -
That Vaio Z does have me lusting after it. $1900 base price though
-
hmmm...did you just say I am like a woman?
Im a man...and it that case, I think you are referring to my initial thoughts as a bipolarity...well, I hated it due to the crapware, the slow and sluggish performance and the heat. After purging the HDD, it was a different story. -
I am seriously thinking on reselling the Envy and getting the VAIO if my economies allow it, and I get a great deal...that thing has me drooling...the 1080p
Besides the size would be perfect for portability, not so much for 3D modeling...
