I've been hearing rumours that the envy 15 line is going to be discontinued? Please tell me this is not true... the 15 was the perfect size for me. I feel like the 14 is too small to game on and watch movies on regularly.

It's the Envy 13 that is being phased out, not the 15. The 13 is supposedly being replaced by the Envy 14.

I'd like to purchase an Envy, mainly for working (Project, programming, etc...)
    - Do you think the HD display has excessive resolutions for working?
    - If I purchase the glossy display (possibly I will buy refurbished), will I able to change the display to a mate one?

    Thank you!

The scuff marks in some cases are usually just from the packaging and wipe off easily. The hinge can be tightened so the screen will close properly if needed by openening the case and tourqing down the screws, one trick to try first is; close the lid, wrap your hand over the hinge area and squeeze the top (screen side) and the bottom together firmly across the full length of the hinge area.

Remember you have 21 days to test out the machine (at no cost to you) so no need to jump the gun and return it right away, see if it meets your needs performance wise first....

15 might not get redesigned. All it will get is a 5730 switchable graphics option and a backlit keyboard. I don't think they can do anything with the case if they still want a 5830 running cool in there.

Also, JJB, if you are really good at complete dismantling your laptop, you can complain and escalate your case to HP's CM and a CM Will most likely get you a new replacement off the factory line. Now the thing is, the replacement might or might not be good with the OC-ing (luckily for me, I got a top grade 5830 in my replacement), but it isn't, just do a complete motherboard swap and send in the current Envy back with the new board. They only check the serial on the back cover to ensure that you are returning your old and damaged unit in return for a new replacement. They will not likely go that deep and check the numbers on the motherboard.

Does anyone know if they'll be adding E2E on the envy 15's as well? Would look kinda nice, and will there be some extra ports like on the 14 and 17?

Probably not. The original reason they didn't give E2E for the Envy 15 was due to the weight. It added like a full 1 lbs. to the laptop, giving it a disadvantaging 6 lbs. The Envy 17 can get it since it wasn't meant to be a portable machine and the Envy 13 and 14 gets it cause it was so light from the start that they can instate the extra lbs. and it will still be light.

Hi, did anyone find a way to enable two finger tap on the touchpad (middle click on a mouse) or triple finger tap for the right click? Somebody recommended scrybe, but I just cannot find the way to enable those, just some drawing shortcuts.

Also is it normal that the bottom of the screen is a little bit separated from the bezel? Like if you move the screen to about 45 degrees and look there, you'll see a metal line and a bit of space. If i push on it, the space gets smaller, and I was actuallyvthinking of gluing that in, or is that a bad idea?

    thanks.

mine has a few most came off, there is one that I can't get but its really small, I don't mind it. This think ways like nothing feels like a frisby. This is the sexiest lappy ever, Also the touchpad is great and the tilt angle is fine, I don't know why people complain about it. Its not that hot it gets warm underneth but it does have alloy casing so its to be expected. I just have to figure out if my screen is really the ultrabright 1080p any ideas.
Also wondering if I should put a extened warranty on this.

Don't know if you're a Costco member, but costco.com currently has a two-year HP laptop service plan with Accidental Damage Protection and LoJack recovery for $99. Must be purchased within 30 days after you buy your laptop. This is a screaming deal.

The warranty is for send-in service, not in-home. But previous posters here have pointed out that HP requires the Envy to be sent back for any non-trivial service anyway.

Hi JJB. Yes, if I understand what you're saying and memory serves me correctly, that's how it looks.

I just lifted up one edge and pulled the key itself off. You'll heard a bunch of clicks as it comes undone, and the metal C or U thing as I called it should be clipped into the removed key. To put it back after twisting it, you just let it dangle from the key, slide in the guides into the actual keyboard slots and then just push down until it clicks back into place.

I got my info from wikipedia, so there's no guarantee that I'm right. It seemed to suggest that the 5850 can be configured to use GDDR3, GDDR5 or DDR3. I had just assumed that ATI may be spinning off the 5830's as 5850's (with the GDDR3 controller) that didn't pass the higher clocked requirements for a 5850.

True. It looks like the mobility 5750/5770 is 1/2 of the 5850 in shader core count. Both can use the GDDR5 memory (again, according to wikipedia). I'd have to see some hardware analysis to see what the real scoop is.

I remember a while back (when DirectX9.0 showed up with Half-Life 2) that people were hailing in a new era where memory bandwidth no longer would dictate the speeds of a GPU. It was all going to be shader power. Since DX9 showed up in 2002, that still hasn't quite come to pass :)

That's as far down as mine goes. If you look along the top edge of the screen, there are 2 long, skinny rubber "feet" attached to the bezel that prevent the screen from closing any more than that. They also protect the screen from keyboard "thunks".

You can tell what type of screen you have by checking the resolution. If it's 1920x1080, and the screen is shiny (ie you can see your reflection in it when the laptop is off), you have the Ultra Brightview display.

You can also probably tell from the receipt :)

it seems to me the lid is closed correctly...the rubber pads on the bezel keep it a couple millimeters away to avoid scratching..

I just ordered one for an HP dv8t I purchased for a friend. Got notice today it has shipped. As soon as it's received and we activate it, I'll report back.

Like I said, it's a screaming deal. No risks, since everything at costco is returnable.

One friend is selling me an Envy 2nd generation but the display is 1366x768. As I said in a post before I want it mainly for working (programming, project management...) and play some times.

Do you think this display is suitable or it's worthy to get the 1900? How could I change this display to a mate/non glossy one?

    Thank you!

I am sure it's real. As a Costco member that has purchased laptops from them in the past, I can say their service is top notch for diagnosing problems with your laptop. They have a direct line to something that is called concierge services that is included with the purchase of a laptop. The line is for having direct communication with a rep to resolve problems with your laptops. Way better than calling the manufacturer directly. Also another reason I think this is legit is because Costco moves a lot of HP laptops. I'm sure they have some kind of business plan worked out.

My whole point of this ramble is to share with you the benefits of purchasing from Costco. It may seem to good too be true, but I'm sure it isn't.

Is the Costco warranty deal a limited thing or is it normally for that price? I'm trying to hold off on an Envy until the 14 and 17 come out and the fate of the 15 is decided.

There is no such thing as resolution too high for coding. Even if the text appears too small to you, windows 7 has a great text size scaler that can make the text as big as you want.

It looks to be normal price. The only catch is that you have to purchase the extended warranty within 30 days of the laptop purchase. I'm not 100% sure if the price will stay like this forever, This is a really awesome deal. If i didn't already have three years of warranty on my laptop, I would be all over this.

Also as a side note. For anyone purchasing electronics, If you use an American Express card, American Express will tack on an additional year of warranty past the manufacturers for free. A service offered to members. That's what I did :D

Just got my envy!! IT LOOKS AWESOME.

    i5-520, 4gb, 5830, 1920x1080 matte

just did a fresh install .... only bad thing was I had to order recovery discs from HP because I don't have a dvd RW drive =/. BUT then I found the usb recovery flash disk utility...

will this still make a recovery disc from the partition if I've already reinstalled Win7?

Does using an AMEX give you an additional year of warranty when purchasing the 2year warranty?

Another question: If the warranty needs to be purchased within 30 days of laptop purchase doesn't that mean if I ordered it on April 6th (but it didn't arrive until May 6th because of delays) I would not qualify for it?

But I wouldn't trust VISA's warranty company provider, it looks like some junk company, I guess if I send computer to them, they will trash out the laptop

AMEX will extend your warranty an additional year from when your original warranty expires. so yes if you purchased a two year, you will be extended to a third year if you use your amex

I don't have a solid answer for you but here is a link directly from the site.
    http://www.costco.com/images/content/misc/PDF/HPLojack_data.pdf
Actually it is not a stupid question. I wondered the same thing and I looked all over the site and nowhere, not even in the pdf link above, did I find any fine print saying laptop must be purchased from costco

To Q1: The Amex warranty extension applies to the product actually purchased. In this case, you are purchasing a warranty, not a computer, so I'm not sure a warranty on a warranty even makes sense.

To Q2: Warrantees are a form of insurance and insurance goverage in general starts the day you take possesion of the item rather than the date you ordered it. For example, when I called HP about returning my Envy 15, they looked up the date FedEx had delivered it and calculated from there. Best to speak w/ HP or Costco about their specific warranty to be sure tho.

Does someone know a date when the envy 15 is going to be refreshed? (3th gen)

There is a envy 15 1200CTO notebook in the driver list and they also mention 5730/5830 drivers. So possibly the 5830 will become an upgrade.
I would like to know a date, because 17" is too big and heavy, 14" is too small (will work with much windows) + no full HD (not that this matters on such a small size)

Wanna buy an envy 15, but waiting for switchable graphics, edge2edge, internal CD/DVD drive. (all the new features of the 14)

Actually you make a very good point PhatCat. I think the best best bet for people wondering about this is to call AMEX directly and inquire about a warranty purchase on top of laptop purchase and what effect it has on the extended warranty from AMEX

at default settings, I'd say yes. I code pretty much all day, but I am connected to an external monitor most of the time. There are workarounds though when using the laptop screen. For example, in eclipse you can increase the editor font size. In google chrome, ctrl+ increases the font, etc. I prefer to do it at the application level, and not windows (some things just don't display correctly when the system font is messed with)

After reviewing the Envy 17 manual I am not very impressed. IMHO it is nothing more than a next gen Pavillion DV8 in Envy clothing. Wedge shaped chassy that appears to be plastic on the bottom 1/3, 1.25" to 1.52" thick, 8.18 lbs. (I assume with the small battery). The biggest concern I have is that the whole cooling system is comprised of 1 fan with heatsinks for the CPU, GPU and system Capacitors, must be pretty large and loud under full load with a Quad core and 5850 running at full load  It's almost like they gave up on competing in the thin and light form factor market which I thought was the whole Idea of the envy and voodoo line.....

I have a curious question. Can the Envy 15 support the upcoming 840QM?

Thanks for the link to the 'lineup' thread, I got my comedy fix for the day! What a joke, I can't believe that so many waste their time speculating on truly unkown answers. I especially like all the people who relied on the info provided by the "HP" sales rep for Best Buy who gave all the updated specs for the envy 14, what a croc, lol. Yep, sales rep and Best Buy, the two most reliable sources for new product information, LMAO. I was an OEM sales rep for 20 years and know firsthand how sketchy new product release info is....
