AFAIK the next variation of the 15 is already spec'd on the HP website as the envy 15t 1200 CTO, go to the support and drivers page and you can view the actual service manual for it with all specs and options... No release date officially announced yet.

I wonder how hot this envy 17 is going to get... surely there isn't enough cooling in that thing to keep it running at a comfortable temperature

Also a quick question, any current envy 15 owners thinking about getting the envy 14 when it's released?

Given that it has 7 vents on the bottom, the medically significant question if you plan to have kids is how hot does your lap get?

No I meant for our current 1100-Series Laptops. Will HP be nice enough to provide BIOS Support for 1100 that works with the 1200?

Nope, the E14's GPU is a big of a downgrade in this generation series from the E15.

    Quick question:

Is there anything at a hardware level that could be attributed to BIOS flashing fails?

I just bricked my ENVY for the second flash in a row... and it did it in the exact same manner. Shortly after the "erasing/writing" starts the flasher crashes and the computer freezes. It's happened at basically the exact same spot in the progress bar.

Either way - after bricking my ENVY twice in less than two weeks I'm a little irritated HP can't get it right as far as my machine is concerned! I guess I should stop trying to flash but the BIOS I was on (F.1B?) was giving me higher temps than my previous one (I can't remember which) so I was hoping the newest BIOS would lower them back down to "normal". I feel like knocking a few degrees C off of my operating temps was worth the risk though and don't feel as if I'm out of line for being upset after two bricks in a row!

How big of a downgrade are we talking about here? The gpu was one of the main things that kept me wanting to just get an envy 15. I'm not really much of a gamer (couple of games now and then) and will probably be using this mainly for my school work (a lot of programming and some video editing) and to watch films. I was thinking the envy 14 and the 5650 would be enough to satisfy this but the 5830 and 1080p display on the envy 15 makes me doubtful.

Hey guys, I seem to be experiencing instability in BF2/BC2/JC2 and other games that I've tried playing...at seemingly random times the system will completely freeze with a sound loop, forcing a hard reboot. This has only happened while playing games-sometimes it happens 5 minutes into a round, and sometimes 3 hours in. Is it a driver issue? My temps are great and I don't have the 5830 OC'd...

If your able to try flashing a BIOS a second time then you are not 'bricking' your computer, bricking = dead, nothing happens when you power on, no post screen at all.

I know this... I sent it to HP and they did whatever they do to put a fresh BIOS on there. I tried to flash it from the one they put on there and it bricked it again.

    A 5650 has 400 Pixel Pipelines while the 5830 has 800 Pixel Pipelines. Both uses I believe 128-Bit GDDR3. A 5650 is a slightly lower clocked 5730.

Sorry, your earlier post read like you were able to recover and tried flashing again....

Thanks for posting this reply, now I am definately not going to try and flash the f .26 as I just got mine back from bricking and they loaded the f.24 version for some unknown reason, it's working with just slightly warmer temps than before so I'll live with it....

The person I talked to on the phone said they were probably going to have to take down the flash utility and retool it. It almost sounded like they were still have problems with failed flashes.

I'm also hoping that they treat my ENVY well again... and I don't get it back in a condition comparable to some of the horror stories I've read on here. :(

    @yashasvi

yes you need to get a travel adapter that can step down the voltage from 230V/50Hz(india) to 120V/60Hz (US).

Also the plugs are shaped different so your travel adapter needs to have plugs like this:

I have a peculiar problem with my LAN. I am in university housing where I am not allowed to use a router. So I have to use an ethernet cable. The problem I am having is whenever instead of the ethernet cable I use my iphone tethered for internet (while wife uses the cable for her net) and then when I stop that and try use the ethernet cable it says no network access. At that point when I restart the laptop it gets internet fine. It also happens sometimes if I remove the ethernet cable and not use any internet but then try and connect to LAN but it won't until I restart.

What could be the issue and any solutions if possible?

    Thanks a lot.

Oh boy, I've been dealing with this for a long time. I don't know if it is the ethernet driver that sucks or what (maybe win7 bug). I can't switch from wifi to ethernet without rebooting; or as I've found out, a bit faster, going into network adapters settings, right click the ethernet adapter (Atheros) and disable, then re-enable, it will get an IP then. Very annoying.

I'm rather skeptical about this. (specifically about the discontinuation of the E15; E13 is unnecessary with the advent of E14)

Seriously stop posting this repetitively... you could easily find this info on the net... cost of 4gb ram isn't very hard to find. You could search for your upgrade query... just don't spam.

is 4gb enough for what exactly? You'll have to open it up using the hp envy manual to get to one of the ram slots, the other one is much easier to access.

A good deal depends on what you need... whether you actually need an i7, whether the blu ray is worth the money are things you need specify in your post rather than just putting a bunch of specs up and asking for opinions based on nothing.

I'm not really an expert, only having kept my envy for the 21 day trial period, and returning it so that i cud wait for the refresh.

I would think 8gb maybe better for you since you need the envy for 3d modelling but I don't believe it is necessary. Gaming, movies, photoshop, 4gb is more than enough with an i7, and should be enough for 3d modelling. See how it is when you get it and then decide if you want to get 8gb, I think 4gb should be enough. Just don't go for the 8gb hp upgrade as its cheaper to get it elsewhere. Some places do 4gb sticks for roughly $150 each i think and at HP they charge you $300 for 2*2gb ram sticks, so obviously I would suggest you search online for other sellers. 2gb sticks shouldn't cost too much. Just google it.

You may want to read through a good amount of this thread as there are a lot more people who have had and completely tamed the envy and have a lot more advice and experience.

I agree. The text for the Envy 15 in the link you cite says ATI 5830 or ATI 5730 graphics. The latter has never appeared in the HP configurator, which suggests that a new model is coming. The 640GB HDD option appeared relatively recently as well; not something you'd expect for a machine they had decided to discontinue.

And then there is the fact the the link stating that the 15 is toast leads with "The notorious manufacturer Hewlett-Packard makes a comeback ..." Somehow I doubt they're in bed with HP.

As I just said, I don't own an envy anymore so I am not too sure what was written exactly on the adaptor. I used a slim kensington power adaptor most of the time anyways so I never paid much attention to the fat brick I got from HP. Sorry about that.

yeah i knew about that - i mean, why would they take down the 13 page and not the 15 and add in the 5730 if they were dropping both? its just that there are so many conflicting views on the status of the 15 that i dont know which side to believe.
ill wait till the 19th or 26th to see if they do update the 15 by then anyway. if not then ill just jump on it unless they refresh it with the same build quality that the 14 and 17 have within my trial period. hp is releasing all the pavilions on the 19th as well so i don't see why they wouldnt update the 15 by then too.

I no longer have my Envy 15 but the Service Guide lists:

    120- and 90- W HP Smart Adapter (100-240V)

Yeh this is torture waiting lol, the 15 is really the best all around laptop ion my opinion and once updated with a few things will make it perfect. I mean its light as hell and powerful enough for pretty much anything you could want to do. I mainly want backlit keyboard, so nice at night time or in dark areas plus it looks cool as hell lol, and if they clean up the key board to be like more of the 14/17 and new Pavillion lline which is clean looking as well. E2E isn't a big deal to me if they do it, than great, if not, no biggie. Its the perfect size, the 14 is barely any smaller.

Once thing I'm confused on though, people say the 15 still has plastic hinges. So what does the hinge system on the 14/17 look like/made of??!?

The 15 does not have a plastic hinge. It is a very robust dual (L/R) metal hinge that is just covered by the plastic shroud which is actually part of the screen bezel.

I took my USA-bought Envy 15 w/ USA adaper+plug (60Hz/120V) for two weeks to London (50Hz/240V) using a simple plug adapter (no transformer) and had no issues.

laptop designers have power adapters that can unplug for a reason: all they need to do to localize it is change the cord going from the adapter to the wall plug. The adapter itself can handle pretty much anything and the cord is just a cord.

The problem is caused by Bonjour, an Apple network discovery service. Disable if you don't use any Apple stuff, or switch to delay start and see if that helps.

I'm pretty annoyed that my 4 day old envy has a chip on the top of the lid where the silver coating has come off. Also the SD card slot cover is totally jacked up and pushed into the slot and it doesn't sit correctly when there is no sd card in. These little things are making me lean towards returning it.

you know there are so many people that complain about the envy and its such a good machine, people don't buy a product just to try it, its morally not right. Alsothere is something new always around the corner. Poor envy u can't please everybody.

back on topic, anyone know if you can scroll up and down with the touchpad.
